Hebridean Businesses Collaborate for Remote Tastings – Scotch Whisky News

Hebridean Businesses Collaborate for Remote Tastings

A company which sources ‘wild water’ from the Isle of Lewis for whisky drinkers to enjoy with their dram is uniting remote island communities in a digital collaboration with a small whisky shop in the Outer Hebrides, a well-known Scottish distiller and a whisky expert.

James McIntosh, the founder of wild water brand Larkfire, is launching an online ‘Whisky & Wild’ tastings series together with whisky expert Matt Chambers and Jura single malt whisky, produced on the island of Jura nestled off the West Coast of Scotland.

Larkfire is sending free tasting packs of its wild water and samples of 12, 18 and 21-year-old Jura single malt whisky to islanders with the aim of keeping spirits high while businesses and communities are on lockdown and tourism is on hold.

Whisky blogger and awards judge Matt Chambers will be hosting the live whisky tastings on Instagram, encouraging islanders to connect and communicate during lockdown.

James McIntosh, whose Larkfire business already supports local initiatives through a partnership which donates a percentage of sales to The Stornoway Trust, hopes that the new digital initiative will support communities.

He said: “We’re keen to support communities and businesses on the islands and were mulling over what we could do to help, just to raise spirits a little.

“We heard about Stornoway start-up business, the Island Spirit Whisky shop, having to postpone its opening because of the current situation, and it gave us the idea of doing something virtually.  We contacted owner Iain Faller and he’s put us in contact with other businesses.

“What sounds like the start of a joke about a bar – a wild water for whisky, a whisky shop and a distiller start working together – is happening, ironically, because there are no bars open.

“We are launching the first ‘Whisky & Wild’ tasting on 1 May, inviting islanders to join a free online session hosted by Matt.  We hope to unite many people in raising a glass during lockdown, supporting each other and promoting local businesses across the islands and beyond.”

Kirsteen Beeston, Head of International Malts at Whyte and Mackay which owns the Jura brand, said: “We are delighted to support this creative initiative of bringing together fellow Scottish island communities.”

Larkfire – a natural ‘wild water’ that brings out the full flavour of whisky – is stocked by prestigious venues including Boisdale Group sites in Mayfair, Belgravia, Canary Wharf and Bishopsgate. Soho Whisky Club also uses Larkfire for its tasting events, and Islington restaurant Frederick’s offers Larkfire alongside its range of world whiskies.  It was named Best Premium Drink at the World Beverage Innovation Awards.

Sazerac Company Donates N95 Masks to Healthcare Industry to Help with Covid-19 Pandemic

America’s Largest Producer of Distilled Spirits Donates Nearly 15,000 Respirator Masks

in Wake of Ongoing Need

LOUISVILLE, KY (April 27, 2020) – The Sazerac Company, the largest producer of distilled spirits in North America, is donating 14,800 N95 respirator masks to the healthcare industry in various markets across the country.

In addition to the donation of N95 masks, Sazerac is supplying all of its team members with cloth face covers for personal protection.  Team members working at all of Sazerac’s production facilities will receive face covers for each shift they work as the company produces hand sanitizer for some of the world’s largest organizations in healthcare, government, military, retail, distribution, airline, pharmacy, and banking industries.

“Unfortunately N95 respirator masks remain scarce, so we are happy to be able to supply these to the healthcare industry in the fight against this pandemic,” said Matt Maimone, Sazerac’s chief operating officer.

Maimone adds, “We know the demand for hand sanitizer on an industrial scale is still great. To date, we’ve produced nearly 2,000,000 liters of hand sanitizer across our sites in North America and are continuing to source more ingredients to produce more every day.  Our workforce has risen to the occasion to help meet this demand, and we appreciate their willingness to step up.”

The initial run of sanitizer started in Kentucky at its Buffalo Trace Distillery in Franklin County, and Sazerac continues to increase production at The Glenmore Distillery in Owensboro and across its other locations.

In addition to providing face covers to team members, all Sazerac plants have taken additional steps to operate in a safe and responsible manner and are following all CDC guidelines including rigorous cleaning, observing six feet social distancing, mandating its team members to stay home if not feeling well, and implementing protective screens where appropriate.

The Definitive Guide to Canadian Distilleries – Canadian Whisky News

The Definitive Guide to Canadian Distilleries

It’s nearly 4 weeks since Blair and I launched our new book into the strangest world any author could imagine. No book tour, no signings, no nothing as everyone sits at home in isolation. So, word of our coast-to-coast guide to Canada’s distilleries is very slow in reaching armchair travellers. Too bad. They might otherwise enjoy passing their stir-crazed days reading the book’s distillery profiles and charting new adventures on its regional maps.

We are thankful for our friends on social media who are helping us get the word out. We’ve hosted some virtual tastings and met online with book and whisky clubs. We’d love to join you on your podcast, YouTube channel or Zoom meeting.

And, if a copy of the book has found its way to you, we’d be very grateful if you could post a photo of it along with a few notes on social media and let the world know about it. Include your favourite spirit and tag us @davindek and we’ll publish a selection of your photos online and in our next newsletter.

Cheers!

Chicago’s Hometown Spirits Company Donates Hand Sanitizer During Covid-19

Chicago’s Hometown Spirits Company Donates Hand Sanitizer During Covid-19

April 16, 2020 (CHICAGO) – Chicago-based Beam Suntory donated 2,000 gallons of its hand sanitizer to support local medical professionals, first responders and health facilities combatting COVID-19 in Illinois. Beam Suntory will continue to work closely with public officials to understand the most urgent needs and supply this critical product as available.

“Everyone at Beam Suntory is grateful to all those working so tirelessly on the front lines to protect our communities, and we’re proud to support their efforts,” said Albert Baladi, President and CEO at Beam Suntory. “Chicago thrives when neighbors support neighbors, and that’s helped inspire our team to rapidly repurpose part of our operations to produce hand sanitizer so that we can help meet the urgent needs of our city.”

Beam Suntory has also donated hand sanitizer to first responders, medical professionals, and other essential service providers in Kentucky. The company has adapted the pilot plant within its Global Innovation Center in Clermont, Kentucky into a space that safely and efficiently meets the stringent demands of producing FDA-approved hand sanitizer.

“In an unprecedented public health emergency, it’s critical that our community comes together to create a united front. When Beam Suntory reached out to my office about shifting their production to hand sanitizer, I was glad to connect its team with local hospitals and first responders,” said U.S. Senator Dick Durbin. “I’m grateful that organizations like Beam Suntory are adapting during this time of crisis to support our community and Chicagoans battling coronavirus on the front lines.”

“COVID-19 has absolutely disrupted our lives in Chicago; however; I am appreciative of the local philanthropic and business community, like Beam Suntory, via their donation of hand sanitizer to be used by first responders and medical personal on the front lines of treatment to our infected citizens.  I continue to encourage all to give as much as you can to those right now that need it the most,” said U.S. Representative Danny K. Davis.

“Beam Suntory’s actions support countless Chicagoans working day and night to fight this disease and demonstrate the vitally important role Chicago businesses play in our City’s response to this crisis and our future recovery,” said Mayor Lori Lightfoot. “I am grateful for our hometown company’s partnership during this difficult time, and look forward to Beam Suntory and its employees continuing to thrive in Chicago for years to come.”

In addition to hand sanitizer production, Beam Suntory has donated $1 million to the United States Bartenders Guild (USBG) and the Restaurant Workers Community Foundation in partnership with Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits. These organizations provide critical support for the bar and restaurant community by providing financial aid and other resources for workers who are most impacted by COVID-19. The company’s Maker’s Mark brand has also partnered with the LEE Initiative to expand its restaurant worker relief program to cities including Chicago.

Beam Suntory’s hand sanitizer donation is just the most recent example of the company’s commitment to Chicago. The company is partnering with City Colleges of Chicago to develop beverage management concentrations at the Washburne Culinary & Hospitality Institute. Classes are expected to begin this fall. Beam Suntory also partnered with the Friends of the Chicago River to improve conditions in local forest preserves and along the Chicago River, including near Beam Suntory’s global headquarters at the Mart.

Shop Old Particular at Milroys of Soho – Scotch Whisky News

The Old Particular Collection

Here at Milroys we have always loved the rare, unusual and special one off cask. Douglas Laing delivers that on multiple levels by finding the those dark corners in warehouses across Scotland where those whisky gems hide. Here are some of those gems from the Old Particular range, reviewed by our very own Soho whisky bar team.

Eddy on Inchgower 21

“Oh this Inchgower 21 is like an old friend visiting, bringing with it so many memories? I remember the first time we had this in the bar, it got a lots of attention, no wonder ! It’s sweet, gentle and elegant full of Speyside character is all what you want in a old and well matured dram. I once had a gentleman that kept refusing samples of different whiskies based on colour and label, so after the 3rd refusal I decided to give him a taste of this, but blinding the label and its colour. He was overwhelmed as he described it as of honey and ice cream. He a bought a bottle on the spot. For me this is one of those distilleries that you don’t get your hands on easily, Douglas Laing should be thanked for such a pleasure.”

Katie on Caol Ila 14

This 14 year old unpeated – yes, unpeated Caol Ila! – makes for a treat for Caol Ila fans, or those looking for a gentle Islay sip. This has all the gentle earthy and ozone notes of usual Caol Ila without any smoke, resulting in a deliciously umami and elegant character. Vanilla, lemon zest, black tea and ginger are some of many exotic notes to be found here. Now, if only we were drinking it on an Islay beach.

Jason on Jura 12

This Jura was left to mature in an ex-refill bourbon barrel. Subtle hints of dried fruit, citrus, vanilla, with spice on the back end which has only been enhanced by sherried fruitiness, and just a hint of smoke like a spent memory of childhood camp fires.

Some tend to pass it by because of it’s pale straw colour, well, I see that as challenge. Grabbing the bottle and putting it right in front of the them so they can get a good look at it, their face changing, eyes brows coming down and chin boss going up in the usual expression of ‘I’m not sure about this one’, by this time I already have a glass in my hand ready to pour a small taste. They try it. I win.

In this line of work you come across a lot of Independent bottling’s that make you wonder why the distillery doesn’t follow suit. Douglas Laing just get it right. A lot.

Frankie on Braeval 18

Braeval Distillery, also known as Braes of Glenlivet, one of the highest distillery in Scotland – (355m above sea level). I guess not many people heard of this distillery as most of their spirit distilled goes for blending primarily into Chivas Blends, and you may see some independent bottlers bottled as single cask sometimes. I still remembered the first time when I tried this dram, It reminded me one of my fall road trip in Japan. I was taking a break at a tea house, enjoying some spiced biscuits and buttery jam toast in the mountain forest with the lovely woody dry leaves smell surrounding me.
