Distillery Focus: Glenfiddich at Hard To Find Whisky – Scotch Whisky News

Located in Dufftown in Speyside, Glenfiddich produces the world’s most popular single malt whisky. William Grant and his nine children built the distillery in 1886 with the aid of a single stone mason. Now run by the fifth generation of the Grant family, the distillery has grown to become one of the largest in Scotland. In 1963, Glenfiddich launched their first single malt, effectively creating the modern single malt whisky category at a time when blends accounted for nearly 100% of Scotch whisky production. Glenfiddich’s character is traditionally light, delicate, and approachable with flavours of citrus, apple, and pear. Older whiskies often feature a higher proportion of ex-Sherry casks, adding weight, fruit, and complexity.

Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 323: Sazerac Rye – American Whiskey News

Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 323: Sazerac Rye

Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky vlogger, tries a rye whiskey. Sazerac has a lot of meanings. It is the name of a big spirits company, the name of America’s First cocktail and, most interesting for us, the name of a straight rye whiskey. Supposedly, the name comes from a French importer of cognacs, Sazerac du Forge et Fils. In New Orleans, in the famous French Quarter, there is still a Sazerac Coffee House. The company Sazerac owns, among others, the Buffalo Trace distillery, where this rye whiskey is produced today.

GLEN LUSS DISTILLERY ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS – Scotch Whisky News

GLEN LUSS DISTILLERY ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS

Glen Luss Distillery is excited to announce the appointment of Gary Deans and Brian Woods as Non-Executive Directors, effective from the 1st July 2020.

Gary Deans, a former KPMG partner brings over 35 years of experience advising privately held businesses and his work at Glen Luss will focus on raising finance and the business’s growth strategy. Deans, who established Strathblair Associates in 2016, works with a number of growing businesses and is a Director of HALO Kilmarnock, Indinature and social enterprise Freedom Bakery. He was also appointed Chairman of Falkirk Football Club in December 2019.

Deans said: “I am delighted to be joining the team. This is an exciting and unique opportunity and I am looking forward to helping establish Glen Luss Distillery as a premium brand.

Brian Woods brings significant drinks industry experience to the team. He recently founded Alexander David & Co, a vehicle to advise businesses on their route to market, marketing, fundraising, brand development and export markets. He is also a Director of Cane & Grain International, an independent bottler of single casks of Scotch whisky and rum. Prior roles include founder & CEO at Crucial Brands Holdings, where he developed a global spirits portfolio, as well as positions at Paragon Vintners, Angostura, Maxxium UK & Beam Suntory (After Shock) and at Diageo (Smirnoff).

Commenting on his appointment Woods stated: “I’m thrilled to be working with such talented entrepreneurs as Trystan, Patrick and Dan. Their concept of creating an Experimental Craft Distillery on the banks of Loch Lomond is both disruptive and compelling. I am excited to play a part in developing their proposition and seeing it come to life.”

Glen Luss Distillery, which plans to open in May 2021, will be the first craft brewery and distillery on the shores of Loch Lomond and the first within the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. The craft brewery and distillery will host visitor experiences and produce a range of experimental premium drinks, including a single malt Scotch whisky, locally sourced botanical infused gin, aged and new make rums, small batch vodka and a collection of craft beers.

NOTES

Glen Luss Distillery has been founded by Trystan Powell, Patrick Colquhoun and Daniel Lewis, graduates of the University of Strathclyde MBA. They bring together over forty years of combined industry and business experience to this project across operations management, customer experience and sales.

Luss is a picturesque village in the heart of the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, in the Highlands of Scotland. Luss is the historic home of the Clan Colquhoun and the Glen Luss range will take inspiration from the history of the area and the heritage of the clan. Glen Luss itself rises to the west of the village of Luss and is surrounded by six bens, most of which are over 600m high. These are Beinn Eich, Beinn Lochain, Cruach-Ant-Sithein and Beinn Mhanaich. The Glen is one of the sources of freshwater flowing into Loch Lomond. Loch Lomond itself is the largest body of freshwater (by surface area) in the UK.

Founded in 1892 by William Grant, Balvenie is located next to the giant Glenfiddich distillery on the outskirts of Dufftown in Speyside. Crafted by Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE, The Balvenie is one of the most famous and highly regarded Scotch single malt whiskies. Whisky Wednesday Reviews Oban Distiller’s Edition – Scotch Whisky News

A small coastal town that’s known the world around for it’s one distillery. But, outside of the famous 14YO, Oban have a few tricks up their sleeves, sherry influenced tricks that provide a wonderfully fruity, almost exotic flavour to whisky that is known for being more a salty, west coast sister to Clynelish. Oban Distiller’s Edition: a surprise, indeed.

Diageo take stride towards climate change goal with first carbon neutral distillery – American Whiskey News

Diageo take stride towards climate change goal with first carbon neutral distillery

Our new Kentucky whiskey distillery producing Bulleit is expected to be one of the largest carbon neutral distilleries in North America

We have announced that our new Kentucky whiskey distillery, which will distill Bulleit, is expected to be carbon neutral – one of the largest in North America, and a first for Diageo. Reinforcing our global commitment to reducing our carbon emissions and addressing climate change, the site will be powered by 100% renewable electricity, with a capacity to produce up to 10 million proof gallons per year.

The new distillery, which is currently under construction in Lebanon, Kentucky, reflects Diageo’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions and moves us closer to our goal of sourcing 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. Employing electrode boilers, the site will utilize a mix of renewable electricity sources to power a 72,000 square-foot distillery, dry house, and warehousing facilities. As previously announced “The Diageo Lebanon Distillery” will have the capability to distill a variety of bourbon and American whiskey brands. Bulleit will be the first and lead brand produced at the new distillery – supplementing existing production at The Bulleit Distilling Co. in Shelbyville, Kentucky. This move will further strengthen the brand’s commitment to a more sustainable future.

““As a company we know that our long-term sustainable growth depends on reducing our reliance on fossil fuels that contribute to climate change,” said Perry Jones, President, North America Supply for Diageo. “This groundbreaking undertaking to electrify our operations and then power them with renewable electricity will result in one of the largest carbon neutral distilleries in North America. This is a significant step to strengthen our commitment to minimizing our carbon emissions and will result in an important reduction of Diageo’s environmental impact on a global level.””

To achieve carbon neutrality at the site, we plan to incorporate a variety of features that will avoid annual carbon emissions by more than 117,000 metric tons. This is the equivalent of taking more than 25,000 cars off the road for an entire year. These features include, but are not limited to:

  • Electrification of operations
  • Energy efficiency embedded into the facility design
  • Sourcing renewable energy
  • Water savings design
  • Zero waste to landfill

Committed to decarbonization with approved science-based targets, Diageo is part of a pioneering group of organizations that are championing a green recovery and supporting the Sustainable Development Goals, through membership of the United Nations Global Compact, We Mean Business Coalition and other key global advocacy organizations. As a signatory to RE100, Diageo aims to source 100% of our electricity from renewable sources by 2030. In addition, Diageo has signed onto the global Race to Zero campaign, a commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. We recently joined over 150 multinationals to reaffirm our commitment to Science Based Targets and urge governments around the world to align their COVID-19 recovery efforts with the latest climate science.

““For Bulleit, our passion for sustainability began when we built the Bulleit Distilling Co. in Shelbyville, where we focus on reducing carbon emissions, water conservation and waste management during production. Then, when we opened our Visitor Experience there, we chose to implement practices like eliminating single use plastics from our bar and sourcing locally-grown organic cocktail garnishes from our onsite garden,” said Sophie Kelly, SVP Whiskies, Diageo NA. “Our commitment to the environment evolves with the Lebanon distillery, where no fossil fuels will be consumed for the production of Bulleit. This allows us to really begin to double down on our ambition to reinvent category standards.””
