Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 331: Lagavulin 20 Year Old Fèis Ile 2020 – Scotch Whisky News

Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 331: Lagavulin 20 Year Old Fèis Ile 2020

Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky vlogger, got hold of the Lagavulin for Feis Ile 2020. Because of the corona crisis no Islay Malt & Music Festival this year, but luckily a special release for Feis Ile 2020 was released. This Lagavulin, which matured no less than 20 years, took about two days to sell out. With only 6.000 bottles, that surprised Mark a bit. It matured on a combination of refill hogsheads and both oloroso and PX sherry casks. It’s a very inviting amber with thick legs.

Bowmore® and Aston Martin Unveil First Collaboration – Scotch Whisky News

Bowmore® and Aston Martin unveil first collaboration

1964 provides inspiration to showcase craftsmanship and innovation to unite Black Bowmore and the Aston Martin DB5

6 August 2020, Islay, UK –  Bowmore® Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky and Aston Martin have unveiled their first collaborative creation; Black Bowmore DB5 1964.  A striking concept which brings together an iconic whisky and a legendary car in a bottle of equal parts, featuring exceptional single malt and a genuine Aston Martin DB5 piston.

With only 25 bottles for sale, this exceptionally rare Black Bowmore DB5 1964 is a celebration of time; a definitive moment in history for both Bowmore and Aston Martin. It is also a celebration of shared values and passions; showcasing great innovation and invention.

A beautifully inspiring masterpiece; this unique, handcrafted vessel houses an equally exceptional single malt, Black Bowmore. Inspired by the past, but truly breath-taking in today’s world.  The significance of 1964 is paramount.  This represents a truly defining era of evolution for both Bowmore and Aston Martin.

For Bowmore, 1964 is arguably one of the most significant points in the distillery’s 240-year history. The arrival of a new boiler saw the distillery enter the modern age of distilling as coal fires made way for steam in heating the stills. It was the first distillation from this new boiler that produced the spirit which was to become the iconic Black Bowmore; a sublimely rich and decadent single malt, reflected in awe-inspiring deep darkness.

First distilled on 5 November 1964, over the years Black Bowmore has become one of the rarest and most sought-after single malt whiskies ever created. This latest release represents only the sixth bottling of this exquisite single malt. Since 1993, only around six thousand bottles of Black Bowmore have been made available, thus adding to the desirability of this iconic whisky.

David Turner, Distillery Manager at Bowmore commented “1964 represents a significant date in the modern history of the distillery. Not only a key moment in how we distilled our spirit, but perhaps even more significant as this very spirit went onto create Black Bowmore. These defining moments are fundamental to the history of Bowmore. This collaboration with Aston Martin has allowed us to once again showcase this iconic single malt in the most incredible way.”

For Aston Martin, this was the era of their most iconic car. Launched in 1963 to considerable acclaim, the Aston Martin DB5 is now widely regarded as ‘the most famous car in the world’, not least by virtue of its links to the world’s most celebrated secret agent in 1964.

On its debut the DB5 represented a subtle but important evolution over its immediate predecessor, the DB4 Series 5, not least by virtue of an increase in engine capacity to 4.0-litres. This of course made the DB5 that much more of a sporting saloon which, combined with its exceptional styling, helped it to become one of the most desirable and admired sports cars of its generation. Sir David Brown, the then owner of Aston Martin Lagonda and the man who gave his initials to the ‘DB’ lineage, said of the car: “I believe it is the essential character of the DB5, and its ability to perform perfectly in all conditions, that makes this car so intensely satisfying to own.” It is this relentless pursuit of power with purpose that still helps to define the appeal of Aston Martin today.

Marek Reichman, Executive Vice President and Chief Creative Officer of Aston Martin Lagonda, said: “This exciting new association with Bowmore gives us the perfect opportunity to celebrate a vital part of our star-studded history by combining the unrivalled appeal of the iconic DB5 with the cultured flavours of this world-renowned single malt.”

In keeping with a commitment to true craftsmanship, the Black Bowmore DB5 bottle itself is handcrafted by Glasstorm, a bespoke contemporary glass studio, based in North East Scotland. With over 50 years of glass design, sculpting and creative expertise, each bottle took up to one week to be complete, reflecting the continued thread of attention to detail and skill which defines this collaboration.

Black Bowmore DB5 1964 is presented in a handmade presentation box; itself a work of art.  Inspired by the distillery’s coastal home, the deep blue colour and wave embossing evoke a true sense of place. Created from the finest string-grain calfskin, featuring a custom solid brass latch and hinges, plated with nickel, reflective of the DB5.

The partners are set to unveil a series of collaborative projects and products over the coming months and years, ranging from exceptional experiences to design-led product initiatives with the goal of offering fans of the brands, across a broad spectrum, the opportunities to connect with the partnership.

As world class luxury brands Bowmore and Aston Martin urge consumers never to drink and drive. Drink Smart® messaging will be integrated into all brand activations around the partnership; while the dedicated Drink Smart® platform ensures communication with legal-purchase age adults about making informed, responsible choices.

About Bowmore:

Founded in 1779, Bowmore® is the oldest distillery on Islay, one of the Scottish isles which make up the region known as the ‘Islands’ in the lexicon of Whisky.  The other regions are the Highlands, Speyside and the Lowlands.  Islay malts are famous for their characteristic smokiness and Bowmore® is no exception; the malt is carefully smoked in a peat-fired kiln, using skills honed over two centuries to craft a perfectly balanced Single Malt.

Time is savoured at Bowmore® and the distillery’s adherence to traditional production methods helps to shape the character of its Single Malts. Today, it prides itself as one of the rare distilleries which still produces its own floor malted barley, hand-turned by a traditional wooden malt shovel and hand drawn machinery.  Water for the whiskies is specially drawn from the Laggan River, with its rich peaty overtones – the same Islay peat that fires the malt-drying kiln.

Bowmore® Distillery’s close proximity to the sea is also vital in determining the final character of its spirit. The legendary Bowmore® No. 1 Vaults is where most of the whiskies spend their long lives resting quietly in the cool, dark, damp cellars below sea level, oblivious to the waves thrashing the vault’s sea-facing wall.

They mature in oak casks, previously used for bourbon, sherry or claret, gradually developing rich and mellow flavours until the expertise of our whisky makers deems them ready for bottling.  It is this combination of peat, barley, sea breeze, water, wood, people and tradition that together create the perfectly balanced warm and smoky character of Bowmore® Single Malt Scotch Whiskies. Through peerless maturation expertise and sense of timing, Bowmore® is “Time, Savoured®” – a rich reward for those that appreciate the value of time and an exquisite whisky coveted the world over.

LOCH LOMOND WHISKIES LAUNCH EUROPEAN TOUR UK SWING RANGE – Scotch Whisky News

LOCH LOMOND WHISKIES LAUNCH EUROPEAN TOUR UK SWING RANGE

The Official Spirit of the European Tour UK Swing, Loch Lomond Whiskies, has launched a range of five Exclusive Single Cask Scotch Whiskies to mark the 2020 series.

The Exclusive Casks have been bottled to celebrate the five venues that will host the six-week long European Tour UK Swing, following suspension of the regular season.

Each of the five casks have been finished in a different style of oak cask, with two heavily peated. Specially chosen by Master Blender Michael Henry, each expression expertly showcases Loch Lomond’s unique straight neck stills and the versatility of the distillery.

Loch Lomond Whiskies agreed the partnership with The European Tour earlier this year, meaning that the innovative and exciting range of Single Malt Scotch Whiskies are “The Spirit of the Tour”.

The Betfred British Masters Exclusive Single Cask, marking the event held at Close House, has been finished in Limousin oak, leaving the whisky tasting fresh and slightly tangy, finishing with gentle spice.

The Hero Open Exclusive Single Cask, which celebrates the event held at Forest of Arden, has been finished in a Sauternes wine cask, giving it a malty and honey-sweet flavour.

The English Championship Exclusive Single Cask, marking the event held at Hanbury Manor, has been finished in a Rum barrel, giving the liquid a syrupy sweetness with hints of lemon zest and pineapple, finishing with ginger and cinnamon.

The Wales Open and Celtic Classic Exclusive Single Cask, which honours the events taking place at the Celtic Manor, have been matured in an Oloroso cask, offering a rich, smoky peat before making way to maple syrup, orange peel and sweet clove to finish.

Finally, The UK Championship Exclusive Single Cask, which pays tribute to the final event held at The Belfry, has matured in a Tawny Port cask and showcases a fiery peaty flavour before welcoming hints of salted caramel, spiced apples and vanilla.

With each cask being unique, the number of bottles differs per cask, however over 1,700 bottles will be available across the range in the UK and Europe and will be priced around £90 per bottle. The range will be available to pre-order online from 22nd July.

Throughout the duration of the UK Swing , Loch Lomond Whiskies will be carrying out several activities to ensure that fans can get involved and “be there in spirit”. Professional golfer, Richie Ramsay, three time European Tour winner, will be joining the team as a Loch Lomond Whiskies Ambassador for the duration of the UK Swing, delivering behind-the-scenes videos that will show fans what life looks like on tour, available across Loch Lomond Whiskies’ social media channels.

Fans will also be given a glimpse of life in the golfing world, with Brand Ambassador Iona Stephen. Her “Discover the Spirit Within” series will see Iona meeting key people in the industry, and will look at how golf is adapting to new regulations in a post-COVID world.

“Pick the Pin” allows fans to select the pin location on a selected hole on one day at each event. The concept aims to encourage the fans to “be there in spirit”, given that the event will be played behind closed doors. In addition to these activities, Loch Lomond Whiskies will be giving some lucky fans the chance to win the new exclusive casks.

As an Official Partner of the European Tour UK Swing, Loch Lomond Whiskies will also support the launch of the new ‘Golf for Good’ initiative which will underpin all European Tour events in 2020 by making a positive impact in the communities where the European Tour plays – and the wider world of golf – rewarding heroes of the pandemic such as front line workers, and promoting the many health benefits that golf offers to everyone.

John Grieveson, chief marketing officer at Loch Lomond Whiskies, said: “We are very proud to be the Spirit of the Tour, supporting the European Tour with its new initiative. As one of the most internationally recognised golf events in the world, we’re looking forward to sharing our range of Single Malts, dedicated to each event venue in the Tour, with golf and whisky fans alike.”

Michael Henry, Master Blender added: “It’s been an absolute pleasure choosing the five casks for the European Tour range, carefully selecting individual casks that showcase the underlying distillery profile even when finished in a different style of cask.”

The Loch Lomond Whiskies European Tour Range will be available to purchase at www.lochlomondwhiskies.com

Whisky Wednesday Reviews Wild Turkey Longbranch – American Whiskey News

https://youtu.be/f5t0rwH0pNA

Alright, alright, alright. Let’s get a few things straight here, Wild Turkey make incredible whisky, literally some of the best in the world. Then celebrities get involved, for once it hasn’t been a bad outcome.

Refined with Texas Mesquite Wood, sourced from McCoughnahey’s home state, the Kentucky and Texas link is in a harmony of sorts. Whether the ‘refined’ elements is a type of charcoal filtration? Or perhaps some heavily charred barrel influence is yet to be confirmed, however, the overall flavour is heavy with minty rye spice and ripe juicy peaches. It’s not expensive, it’s going to be readily available for a while, I don’t see why this different style of Wild Turkey shouldn’t be for you. It isn’t classic, but that’s not a bad thing. Cheers!

JACK DANIEL’S RELEASES LIMITED EDITION ERIC CHURCH SINGLE BARREL TENNESSEE WHISKEY – American Whiskey News

JACK DANIEL’S RELEASES LIMITED EDITION ERIC CHURCH

SINGLE BARREL TENNESSEE WHISKEY

Special Edition Whiskey Honors Long-time Friendship with Country Music Superstar

LYNCHBURG, Tenn. (July 29, 2020) – The Jack Daniel Distillery today released a special limited-edition Eric Church Single Barrel Tennessee Whiskey in celebration of its long-time friendship with the country music superstar.

The whiskey is from barrels personally selected by Church and will feature the artist’s name on the specially designed black and gold embossed label.

“Our drive and passion at Jack Daniel’s for crafting the best possible whiskey we can is matched by Eric’s artistry and drive to put out the best music he can,” said Mary Beth O’Mara, Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Senior Brand Manager. “Eric is the real deal, and shares our love of community, independence, spirit and pride in what we do. It’s a special friendship and one we’re proud to celebrate with this whiskey.”

“My love for Jack Daniel’s is for the whiskey but it’s also about a can-do, small town attitude, where community, loyalty and hard work are the qualities the crafters of this American icon hang their hats,” said Eric Church. “I’m honored to have my own special release of Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel. Whether we raise a glass at a table with a handful of our friends or from a stage with thousands, let’s raise our glass high. Cause that’s where it belongs.”

Master Distiller Jeff Arnett assisted Church in the selection of barrels from the top floor of a warehouse on Coy Hill at the distillery. Each barrel offers a significant depth of aroma ranging from sweet vanilla and caramel to toasted and charred oak. The whiskey flavor offers the signature sweet notes of a Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel upon entry but quickly gives way to a complex, full and heavyweight mid-palate, according to Arnett.

“This special whiskey is reflective of Eric himself – bold, rich in character, forward and something that can be enjoyed by those with a taste for a well-rounded whiskey and a unique and memorable sipping experience,” he added.

The Jack Daniel’s Eric Church Single Barrel Tennessee Whiskey, available in a 750ml size and at 94 proof, will hit shelves at the beginning of August across the US.

About Eric Church

The three-time Country Music Association and seven-time Academy of Country Music Award winner released his most recent critically acclaimed and Grammy nominated album, Desperate Man, atop the Billboard Country Albums chart in late 2018. The album, featuring his most recent No. 1 hit “Some Of It,” also debuted at No. 5 on the all-genre Billboard 200. Church returned to the road in 2019 for his chart-topping Double Down Tour, with back-to-back nights of two unique shows sans-opening act giving fans 6+ hours of his iconic music in each city. The tour also featured a massive stop at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, where Church broke the venue’s concert attendance record with 56,521 fans just two weeks before awing the same stadium’s audience with a 30-minute, solo acoustic CMA Fest set featuring a medley of 17 hits. “Stick That In Your Country Song,” released on June 25, is the lead single off a forthcoming project born from a sequestered session in rural North Carolina where he wrote and recorded a song per day for nearly a month.
