A Rare Discount and a Limited-Production Kavalan Single Cask Expression – Taiwanese Whisky News

A Rare Discount and a Limited-Production Single Cask Expression
Kavalan “Solist” Sherry Cask #S081223016A Cask Strength Single Barrel Taiwanese Single Malt Whisky (Elsewhere $210) ($159.99)

NOTE: In accordance with local directives, our walk-in retail locations are currently closed. We have curbside pickup and low cost (often free) delivery options available in ZIP codes where we can ship lawfully, including anywhere in California. We can also include any new or existing will call orders in your delivery batch. Choose local delivery at checkout to learn if you qualify.

Having earned World Whisky of the Year and World’s Best Single Malt Whisky honors, Kavalan has quickly taken its place in the pantheon of the world’s top whiskies. When a spirit reaches such an esteemed status, you don’t expect discounted pricing, but that’s precisely what we have in this rare “Solist” release. Regularly priced at $210, we are offering this “Sherry Cask” exclusive for only $159.99. This is the kind of price that will have collectors taking immediate notice. As we’ve come to expect, this release is big and powerful, while also offering Kavalan’s trademark understated complexity. Elite, collectible whiskies of this caliber always come at a significant premium, so finding this one for just $160 is a rare treat, and one that is not going to last for long. If you are a long-time fan of Kavalan (as we are), then this is a bottling you won’t want to miss. As for those who might be new Kavalan or Taiwanese whisky as a whole, you won’t find a better introduction. As with previous Kavalan offers, we expect this to sell out in a flash, so this is not one to sleep on.

Kavalan “Solist” Sherry Cask #S081223016A Cask Strength Single Barrel Taiwanese Single Malt Whisky (750ml) (Elsewhere $210) ($159.99) —This product is expected to arrive for shipment or pickup by July 29, 2020.

Another cask of Kavalan lost in a warehouse only to be uncovered nearly five years after it was bottled. Last time we found a Solist sherry from years ago sitting in the importer’s warehouse it sold out in no time at the regular price of $210. Now, it’s a new world and a new price. We don’t expect future offerings to be discounted and had we had the chance to purchase this at full price, we certainly would have. For whatever reason, we’re now able to sell this cask for a significant discount. A little gift from the booze fairy. As with all Kavalan sherry, this whisky is a bruiser, with a big powerful nose of dark molasses, cherry compote and cured meat. The palate is surprisingly soft and unusually open, but there’s still plenty of richness and power even though it doesn’t have the tannic grip of some other barrels. The heat is also not as present as some other barrels we’ve had. Bold, rich and round, it’s no wonder Kavalan has become one of the world’s leading distillers of single malt. Their prowess is on full display here. Only 234 bottles available. **DISCLAIMER: As with all “Solist” line Kavalan bottlings for the US market, the labels do not contain the word “Solist,” due to trademark reasons.

Hello Single Barrel Bourbon Fans! – American Whiskey News

This bottle is 5 years old and has wonderful aromas of caramel corn, funnel cake and citrus zest. There is a great rick-house note and allspice as well. The palate is round and rich with caramel corn, brown butter and grilled stone fruits. Black peppercorn and candied citrus finishes this beauty off.

To get the barrel moving we are offering this up to you for $54.99, in mid-August it will go up to its regular price of $59.99.

D&M Wine and Spirits Store Pick Smooth Ambler Old Scout Single Barrel 2020

In what feels like ages ago, but was in fact only back in February, we had the opportunity to stand close to, chat, and taste with Smooth Ambler’s John Little. We have long championed the idea that when it comes to American Bourbon place matters– though the palate may matter more. Old School Willett, Michter’s, and Smooth Ambler Old Scout– these are places that did not initially distill the spirit, though through their selection process have an extraordinarily high deliciousness output.

Back to our meeting with John. He had his core lineup of their own spirit, The Contradiction (blend of purchased and produced) and important for our writing today, a series of Old Scout Single Barrels. The Old Scout program has long been a favorite of Bourbon lovers, and we were so very happy to get a chance to potentially pick another barrel. Let us first say that many of them were quite good, some were excellent, but there was one that stood above for us. The barrel we selected was a 5 year old from Indiana that just so happened to be distilled on October 17th– the owner’s of D&M Mike and Karen’s Anniversary. So, with the option to add a cheeky name to the label, we dubbed this the M&K’s Anniversary Old Scout. After a corporate induced delay, a topsy turvy global pandemic, and a period of closing our doors, we are ever so happy to bring you our Smooth Ambler Old Scout Single Barrel!

Whisky Wednesday Reviews Wild Turkey 101 – American Whisky News

https://youtu.be/Ztuxrf0AiwM

Our latest trip to Kentucky sees us cross the path of a classic, a must try and a must have for all Bourbon drinkers. Honestly, as far as value for money goes, can you do better than this? In any category of whisky? Solid age, higher ABV, readily available, so affordable, great neat, ice, cocktails. It can’t be beaten, it won’t be beaten. It is a foundation product of pure class and quality from a brand that oozes with myths and legends. Some of you may think the score is a little generous, but I stand by it, proudly. Wild Turkey 101. Cheers!

The Kurasyohi distillery is located in Tottori prefecture, Japan, manufacturing whisky, gin, plum liqueur, and so on. Surrounded by countryside, the region has an abundance of fresh water, generously supplied by snowfall on Mt. Daisen (大山). The subtropical climate is partly influenced by its proximity to the Sea of Japan. Temperatures reach around 35℃ in summer and drop to below 0℃ in winter. This variation greatly accelerates the aging of whisky.

The Whisky Lounge Update – Whisky News

What’s New?…
And just in case you missed it!

Greetings from Whisky Lounge Lock-Down HQ!

We hope you are enjoyed that incredible July (!) we all had and managing some time off – safely obviously…

The Covid situation seems so fluid at the moment and it makes it very challenging for all of us. We are – at all times – trying to bring a little light entertainment and drinks education into your life with our Desert Island Drams every Wednesday (live on Facebook at 9pm), and our virtual tastings and taste at home packs, with £5 of every pack sold going to charities supporting hard-hit hospitality workers.

So what have we in-store for you this week? Well read on my friends, read on…

NEW SCOTTISH DISTILLERIES PACK & TASTING
OK, so the name is not that snappy, but it is what it is!

Regardless, we are extremely excited about this one. Similarly to the English single malt tasting from a couple of months ago, we have managed to assemble six of the finest and most exciting ‘new’ Scottish distilleries for one exclusive tasting.

New distilleries have been popping up all over the world and it is possible, with this global ‘trend’, that those being built and established in Scotland are being over-looked. We aim to right that ‘wrong’ with this event…

The tasting on the 14th August will see key personnel from each distillery come together, under the Whisky Lounge banner, to talk about their distillery and the liquid you will be tasting. There will also be the opportunity for you to ask questions of the presenters throughout.

Not able to make the ‘live’ tasting? No problem, you can watch it anytime after it has taken place on our Facebook page…

The list of distilleries and bottlings on tasting;

Daftmill (Lowland)                        Winter 2007 Release
Kilchoman (Islay)                          Machir Bay
Kingsbarns (Lowland)                  Dream to Dram
Lindores Abbey (Lowland)          Aqua Vitae
Strathearn (Highland)                   Batch #001
Wolfburn (Highland)                     Langskip

This is an incredible opportunity to taste both ‘works in progress’ and mature spirit from these trail-blazing distillers.

Once again, we will be giving £5 for each pack sold to The Drinks Trust, to help those in the drinks and hospitality industries in need during this time.

There are only 90 of these packs, and places on the Zoom tasting, available. So hit ‘BUY’ below to secure your pack and place!

Just to note that these packs do take a little while to get together, so please be patient. You will receive it before the tasting, but do not expect it within days of ordering it. Thanks!

USA WHISKEY PACK AND TASTING

Well, why not?

This one is for those amongst you who have a hankering for whiskies originating from across the pond, or those who would like to discover them. We don’t often get the opportunity to taste American whiskies together, but here is one for you now!

The Whiskey, Bourbon and Rye pack will contain 5 whiskies and, in the accompanying tasting on the 21st August, Eddie Ludlow, founder of The Whisky Lounge, will take you through the ins and outs of US whiskies.

Eddie will even show you how to make one of his favourite Bourbon-based cocktails, the classic ‘Old Fashioned’, with a few drops of bitters included in the tasting pack for you. Get your rocks glasses and ice at the ready!

The whiskies on tasting…

Westward Single Malt Whiskey 45%
Four Roses Bourbon 40%
Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon 45%
Four Roses Single Barrel 50%
James E Pepper Rye 46%

This should be a little light-hearted and a lot of FUN!

A Razor-Sharp Price on Arran “The Bothy” Quarter Cask—A World Whisky Award Winner – Scotch Whisky News

A Tantalizing Scotch from the Isle of Arran at an Unbeatable Price
Arran “The Bothy” Quarter Cask Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) (Elsewhere $100) ($79.99)
“The Bothy is a must-buy for anyone who loves a malt-forward whisky.”
— Andrew Whiteley, K&L NorCal Spirits Buyer

NOTE: Our walk-in retail locations are currently closed. We have curbside pickup and low cost (often free) delivery options available in ZIP codes where we can ship lawfully, including anywhere in California. We can also include any new or existing will call orders in your delivery batch. Choose local delivery at checkout to learn if you qualify.

Raised in a combination of ex-bourbon barrels for seven years and the finest American oak quarter casks for an additional two years, the Arran “The Bothy” is among the purest expressions of malt we’ve encountered in a long time. As our NorCal spirits buyer, Andrew Whiteley, writes: “The malt is so crystal clear that it’s like walking through a barley field after a fresh rain.” The use of quarter barrels, a fairly uncommon practice, allows for greater contact between the whisky and oak, and a faster, more intense maturation. The result is an ethereal single malt that will delight the connoisseur and casual drinker alike.Priced elsewhere at $100, we secured a special discount that allows us to offer it at a very affordable $79.99—the lowest price in the market. Bottled at cask strength, it is a potent dram, but as with all of the single malts from Arran, it shows remarkable balance and poise. If you’re a fan of malt-driven single whiskies, you will do well by adding “The Bothy” to your collection.

Arran “The Bothy” Quarter Cask Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) (Elsewhere $100) ($79.99)

Independently owned since its inception in 1995, the folks at Arran have been quietly making some of the very best island distilled whisky in Scotland for 25 years. Their water source is 100% rainwater coming from Loch Na Davie high above the distillery. The clean water combined with 100% concerto malt and a careful distillation is the essence of Arran – it’s fresh, barley forward and shows flavors heavy with citrus, stone fruit, and vanilla pudding. They never color or chill filter any of their whiskies choosing instead to retain all of the natural beauty they worked so hard to capture. The first fill bourbon casks of The Bothy are further enhanced by a 2 year finishing in quarter cask made of American oak. The smaller casks would have been typical of the whiskies being transported to and from the island in the 18th and 19th centuries as they are much easier to move around. Today, Arran has brought this tradition back to the island.

Andrew Whiteley | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 15, 2020

The glorious combination of pure, clean, unadulterated Concerto malt and first fill bourbon is unmistakable. The malt is so crystal clear that it’s like walking through a barley field after a fresh rain. It’s bright, sweet and cereal driven. Fresh baked bread intermingles with the sweeter pastries at the shop—marzipan, apple turnover, baklava and custard tarts. A finish in quarter casks brings out a touch more woody notes. Fresh cedar sawdust, vanilla, and a gentle pull of tannin on the finish livens the whole drinking experience up. It’s a light and bright malt at cask strength—a wonderfully mellow 53.2%. If you do choose to add water you’ll unlock more stone fruit notes and a rounder and very supple mouth feel. One of Scotland’s hidden gems, the independent Arran distillery has quietly produced some of the very best malts since its opening in 1995. The Bothy is a must-buy for anyone who loves a malt-forward whisky.

David Othenin-Girard | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: August 01, 2020

The Arran is a really excellent distillery and each release seems to get better and better. This 3rd batch of the Bothy is the best we’ve had and so we snagged a bit of the old stock before the new importer took over. Here we’ve got the use of new American oak quarter casks, which if not done with restraint could be a problem in my view. Luckily Arran is extremely careful and knows that each batch must be just right in order to keep building their reputation. The color is deep gold. The nose is full of fresh oak, but in a really lively and not obtrusive way. It’s got some citrus peel—tangerines and Seville—plus plenty of vanilla and a bit of coconut. On the palate the wood takes a back seat, thankfully, and lets the malt come through, offering up some nice caramel candy, toasted cereal and hints of mocha. With water we really start to open up, bringing some fresh spices and sweet herbs on the nose. These play nicely with the continued orange peel notes and a bit more sweetness now. On the palate it’s more viscous now and loses its roasted quality in favor of more fruit and spice. A totally delicious example of how to properly use new oak in single malt production.

WHISKY SHOW 2020 UPDATE – Whisky News

WHISKY SHOW 2020 UPDATE

The past few months have been a hugely daunting time in the world and our team at The Whisky Exchange have been fighting to make the 12th year of our beloved Whisky Show happen in a safe and pleasant environment. From relentlessly researching PPE to cutting back certain aspects of the show to create the most secure environment possible, we have exhausted all avenues in bringing together the show safely for 2020.

Unfortunately, we have come to a point where we can no longer continue with the physical show and must confirm the cancellation of Whisky Show 2020, which was due to take place at Old Billingsgate, London, 2-4 October. This was not a decision we took lightly and we would like to extend our sincerest apologies to you all. While we are unable to meet in person this year, we are delighted to be launching Virtual Whisky Show. Get ready for a week-long whisky extravaganza featuring everything you love about Whisky Show.

All tickets purchased, including those for masterclasses and Johnnie Walker blending classes, will be fully refunded to the original card used for payment. Our team are beginning to process refunds which should be received within five working days, along with a confirmation email. Please be aware that this can sometimes take longer depending on your card provider. If you have not received a refund from us within ten working days, then please contact us at office@whiskyshow.com.

We can’t wait to see you all back at Old Billingsgate in 2021, but in the meantime we’ll see you online!

JAMESON IRISH WHISKEY CONNECTS WITH INTERNATIONAL RAP STAR BAS TO SUPPORT EMERGING ARTISTS – Irish Whiskey News

JAMESON IRISH WHISKEY CONNECTS WITH INTERNATIONAL RAP STAR BAS TO SUPPORT EMERGING ARTISTS

Jameson, the world’s bestselling Irish whiskey[1], is rekindling its collaboration with international rap artist Bas to mentor two emerging artists to create new tracks virtually during COVID-19.

Jameson Irish Whiskey has connected the Dreamville rapper with two young musicians from Ireland and the U.S as part of its new campaign – Jameson Connects: The Stay Inn. Together, Jameson and Bas offered the artists a unique mentorship opportunity to help take their careers to the next level.

The #JamesonConnectsBas project was launched in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This spring, Bas had planned to run a series of youth music workshops in Sudan, the country of his heritage, as a way of using his experience and expertise to inspire the next generation of musical talent and to give back to the community and culture that he loves.  Unfortunately, the workshops were postponed because of the COVID-19 crisis. Instead, Bas began working with Jameson to see how he could connect with people through this period and the concept of a digital mentorship programme was born.

Bas handpicked the artists, each with a very different sound and background, based purely on their creativity, potential and originality. In recent weeks he connected with Say 3, a US-based music producer and a regular fixture on the Atlanta club scene and Sierra Leonean-Irish art-soul artist, Loah. Through a series of online workshops, the artists worked in collaboration with Bas to produce a new track.

Commenting on the project, Bas, who is famously the protégé of J Cole, explains: “Throughout my career I have been lucky enough to find myself with amazing mentors, and this is something I have always been truly thankful for. I never underestimate the impact that this has had on my journey as an artist, and I believe it is essential to open up your experiences and share your successes with other aspiring artists so that they can learn from them, and are given the same opportunities.”

Brendan Buckley, International Marketing Director at Irish Distillers, adds: “As the global leader in Irish whiskey, Jameson prides itself on bringing people and communities together. Jameson Connects: The Stay Inn is an extension of this, celebrating the diversity and talents of our whiskey fans. We are delighted to be partnering with Bas once again and look forward to following the musical journey of each of the artists.”

The project forms the next phase of the Jameson Connects: The Stay Inn platform, designed to keep spirits high as the world stays in by bringing drinks recipes, pub quizzes, merchandise giveaways and virtual gigs to Jameson fans around the world.

Fans can tune into videos from the creative process on Jameson Whiskey’s YouTube channel
