Basil Hayden: A Special 10-Year Edition of a Classic Kentucky Bourbon – American Whisky News

KL1

Extra Age on a Classic, Bestselling Bourbon
Basil Hayden’s 10 Year Old Kentucky Bourbon ($54.99)
“The perfect whiskey for fans of the old style Basil.” —Andrew Whiteley, K&L NorCal Spirits Buyer

If you are a fan of Basil Hayden, or even more broadly of high-rye whiskeys, then you simply have to try this spectacular 10-Year edition. Possessing all the hallmark characteristics of their standard bottling, but with even more woodsy spice and power, it’s a jaw-dropper that charms from one sip to the next. Brimming with flavors of caramel, crème brûlée, baking chocolate, and spearmint, it displays unmistakable refinement. Holding the center, of course, is Basil Hayden’s rye spice. The release holds its own against the classic bottlings from Old Grand Dad and serves as a delightful reminder of the celebrated Bourbons of a bygone era. Age-statement whiskeys are increasingly difficult to find under the $100 mark, so having this one for under $55 is a boon. Pick up a few bottles, as you’ll find yourself coming back to this 10 Year Old again and again.

Basil Hayden’s 10 Year Old Kentucky Bourbon (750ml) ($54.99)

The Basil Hayden 10-Year is the same high-rye bourbon Hayden fans know and love but aged longer for a softer, smoother experience. The deep rye grain is balanced perfectly with the mellow vanillas and sweet oak aromas. Basil’s trademark spice is always there keeping things honest. At 80 proof, it’s easy enough for anyone to appreciate. When you want to turn it up a bit, but not scare anyone off, the Basil 10-Year is a great choice.

Andrew Whiteley | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 27, 2019

Basil Hayden has long been one of the most popular bourbons at K&L. The standard BH, long bottled at 8 years old, has presumably is now bottled in the 6-8 year range since it lost its age statement in 2014. Fortunately for fans of the woodier profile that comes with age, Beam has brought back a number for the front of the bottle in this 10-year-old release. Still bottled at 80 proof and showing off the signature spicy finish of the high rye mashbill, BH10 is the perfect whiskey for fans of the old style Basil. Richer in caramel, vanilla, mocha, and with a touch of fresh mint, the 10-Year is a huge step up from the excellent, but sometimes thin, regular bottling. The extra time in barrel provides the backbone that is characteristic of the higher proof in a bottling like Old Grand Dad.

Neal Fischer | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 18, 2019

This is a high-rye Bourbon that doesn’t necessarily drink like one. It’s got big, smooth caramel running throughout, accented by baking spice. Notes of stewed apples mix with buttermilk creaminess and a bright cherry accent. This is a very smooth Bourbon with a long, earthy finish.

Jeffrey Jones | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 17, 2019

Bourbon comes in many different styles, from rich and heavy to light and delicate. This Basil 10 is a classy example of the light and delicate style. The nose is pretty with a subtle aromas. In the mouth it is juicy and elegant, light and balanced with a subtle vanilla finish. This is a first-class bourbon that should please any whiskey drinker.

Whisky Wednesday Reviews Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel, Barrel Proof – 64.1% – American Whiskey News

PHIL

https://youtu.be/spNqszGLm2w

Jack! A name I love, a name a lot of people seem to ignore…not sure why in all honesty. The importance of this brand is forthright into the development of demand, advertising, celebrity and society based around whisky and how we know it today, not to say that Scottish and Irish distillers aren’t as important, of course. I’ve been waiting to buy this for ages and on a jet-lagged return from Kentucky to Manchester, I saw it for £37 with shipping, which is just insane! Cheers

IRISH DISTILLERS UNVEILS NEW ‘JAMESON TRIPLE TRIPLE’ – Irish Whiskey News

Jameson Triple Triple

IRISH DISTILLERS UNVEILS NEW ‘JAMESON TRIPLE TRIPLE’

– A new triple cask, triple distilled Jameson Irish Whiskey exclusive to Global Travel Retail –

Jameson Irish Whiskey, which is produced by Irish Distillers in Midleton Distillery, has announced an exciting addition to its family of Irish whiskeys; Jameson Triple Triple. Available exclusively in global travel retail from July, the new offering is a fresh take on the signature smoothness of Jameson that has been elevated through triple cask maturation – ideal for the adventurous whiskey drinker.

Made in Midleton Distillery, County Cork, Jameson Triple Triple has been triple distilled and blended from a combination of ex-bourbon and sherry casks with the addition of hand-selected casks that have been seasoned with fortified wine from Malaga. The Malaga cask contribution adds notes of citrus, orchard fruits and spice resulting in a whiskey that has a subtle sweetness and an extra drop of smoothness. Jameson Triple Triple is bottled at 40% ABV and available in 1L format globally at the RRP of €32.

Billy Leighton, Master Blender at Midleton Distillery, commented: “At Jameson, we’ve known that good things come in threes ever since John Jameson set up his distillery on Bow Street in Dublin and introduced the world to triple-distilled Jameson Irish Whiskey. Jameson Triple Triple is no exception to this rule. Our single pot still and single grain Irish whiskeys have been further enhanced through triple cask maturation to create an exciting new taste experience.”

Brendan Buckley, International Marketing Director at Irish Distillers, added: “Jameson’s approachability has been key to its success around the world, and with its extra smooth yet subtly sweet character, we expect Jameson Triple Triple to further propel the brand forward in the global travel retail sphere.”

Notes:

Tasting notes by Billy Leighton, Master Blender at the Midleton Distillery:

Nose: Initial fruit notes of sweet pear that develop into zesty citrus peel with some dark fruits in the background. The American oak adds a rich wood spice contribution along with sweet notes of vanilla, chocolate and toasted oak. Hints of cinnamon and clove delicately work in balance with the sweet Malaga wine cask influence.

Taste: Luscious, with sweet orchard fruits and light hints of blackcurrants, plums and raisins. The spices slowly build adding depth with hints of clove and black pepper, layered over the oak tannins adding dark chocolate and liquorice.

Finish: Lingering, with the spices slowly fading to reveal the fruits and oak.

Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Small Batch Bottled in Bond Straight Kentucky Bourbon – American Whiskey News

1120322x

Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Small Batch Bottled in Bond Straight Kentucky Bourbon (750ml)

If you wondered when you saw ‘50%,’ this is indeed bottled in bond whiskey, with all the requirements that go with it. The nose is just this side of hot and brings parched corn, sawn maple wood, spicy hard candy, and dry spearmint leaf. Bright and spicy on the tongue; more candy and honey, and hints of teaberry and licorice that develop into the finish. A better package of flavor and price than the earlier Taylor releases; quite enjoyable. (LB, Spring 2013)

$39.99

K&L Notes

The Colonel E.H.Taylor Bourbon is named for one of the founding fathers of the modern bourbon industry. Edmund Haynes Taylor, an honorary “Kentucky Colonel,” was a descendant of two presidents (Madison & Taylor) and one of Kentucky’s last surviving Bourbon Aristocrats. The Colonel purchased the famous Old Fire Copper (O.F.C.) Distillery at the close of the Civil War. There he introduced scientific method to the production of bourbon, modernized equipment and set standards of production that became ubiquitous for quality bourbon production for the next century. He sold this distillery to George T. Stagg and it would eventually become known as Buffalo Trace. Taylor was a crusader for higher quality standards across the industry and ultimately help pass the 1897 Bottled in Bond Act. No single person can claim as much responsibility for the quality of modern bourbon whiskey as this man. This wonderful Bottled in Bond Small Batch Bourbon, named in his honor, has been extremely hard to get since its release in 2013. It’s won countless gold medals in competitions around the world and a rare 5 star review from renowned spirits reviewer F. Paul Pacult. Some of our competitors feel comfortable charging upwards of $80 for this same bottle due to scarcity. In a world where getting a bottle of Elmer T. Lee, George T. Stagg, or Blanton’s has become next to impossible, finding a bottle of Taylor for $40 is a coup. E.H. Taylor is right at home in the company of luminaries like these.
