Single Cask Nation Releases Batch #5, Full of Incredible Expressions from Impex Beverages – Scotch Whisky News

Single Cask Nation Releases Batch 5, Its Biggest Yet!

Impex1

We’re incredibly excited about releasing the fifth, and so far the largest, batch of Single Cask Nation!  Having scoured legendary warehouses for the choicest of casks, full of amazing aqua vitae, we found incredible variety of flavor you’re going to love. In a couple of cases, we chose two different casks from the same distillery.  We bottled these expressions to show the wide varieties of flavor you can find from a single distillery. We’re not saying that you should buy one of each to compare, but we’re also not not saying that.

 Impex2

Ledaig 13yo – 57.1%

Color: Reflective copper
Nose: Sea spray over pebbles on the beach, delicate coal smoke and pine tar, warm oatmeal with apple and cinnamon, fruit cake fresh from the oven with raisins and boozy cherries
Palate: Pleasantly oily with dried figs, dates, raisin bread, vanilla ice cream sprinkled with sea salt, and returning coal smoke

Finish: Long and memorable, redolent of dark chocolate with almonds and sea salt, then returning fruit cake

Ledaig 15yo – 55.7%

Color: Sauvignon Blanc
Nose: Initially restrained, but notes of crispy pork chops in a white pepper vodka sauce, copper pennies, and fresh rain on potting soil all greet you upon first sniff. After the first sip notes of onion crisps and worn leather are present, supported by a rich malty backbone
Palate: Big and meaty with a very present note of French onion soup, to be sure, but notes of Mexican stone ground chocolate and espresso beans come to the fore. Sweet BBQ beef jerky and a slight yet pleasant floral freshness toward the finish
Finish: Lasting notes of salted licorice and smoked salt on honeydew melon

 Impex3

Clynelish 9yo – 58.1%

Color: Reflective Straw
Nose: Freshly opened box of Jujyfruits, banana LaffyTaffy, Cheerios, freshly laid malt floor, lemon curd, ground pepper, easy to nose with zero alcohol burn, bright, creamy, inviting, fruit Roll ups, hints of sandalwood
Palate: Oily and mouthcoating, bright and engaging, warm cereal notes, candied green apples, ground pepper, candy lips, hints of charred wood around the edges, white tea and fresh honeycomb, ripe tangerine slices
Finish: The texture last for days while the fresh fruits under a dusting of pepper strike a delicious balance

Clynelish 23yo – 52.4%

Color: Burnished Brass
Nose: Stewed fruits at first blush complimented by cinnamon buns and crushed Luxardo Maraschino cherries. Pipe tobacco in the distance, but the dark fruits keep coming to the fore. Add to this guava paste with a dark chocolate dusting
Palate: The mouthfeel is so waxy it’s almost chewy. Sweetened wheat germ and muesli loaded with black currants, dark chocolate nibs, and fresh pomegranate seeds. As flavors build, notes of used books and hot dry attics become apparent. The pipe tobacco note returns as well
Finish: Long and now peppery with hints of warm dates and prunes.

 Impex4

Glenburgie 20yo – 58.9%

Color: Olive oil

Nose: Warm and malty with aromas of cardamon and Crème Brûlée, caramel and cigar wrappers, lemon pinwheels, tinned pears, and spiced vanilla, then hints of fruit cake and toasted hazelnuts

Palate: Wonderfully viscous with pronounced malt, spun sugar, cinnamon buns, graham crackers, then hints of browning pineapple and apple butter

Finish: Sassafras leaves and cold coffee with dark chocolate nibs

On the label: Moderate to long with continuing malt presence, powdered ginger, a hint of cinnamon and grilled pineapple towards the end.

 Impex5

Cameronbridge 26yo – 53.3%

Color: Fresh engine oil
Nose: Cooked stone fruits, spiced cured meats, baked avocado with red pepper flakes, fresh party balloons, pickled walnuts, dusty bookshelves, hints of smoked cumin, fresh deck of playing cards
Palate: Mouth puckering sherry dryness with more pickled walnuts, roasted red fruits, and warm cinnamon with hints of distant struck match. The mouthfeel is dense and waxy with additional rich sherry oak notes (without being too woody), crushed and cooked walnuts, and a concentrated sherry reduction
Finish: Long and rich with warm oak, soft black pepper, and a lingering red fruit juiciness

A Cult Whiskey is Born: New Woodinville K&L Exclusive Casks – American Whiskey News

kl_logo_trans

New Favorites from One of the Most Exciting Whiskey Projects in the US

After their inaugural launch into the California market last summer, Woodinville has quickly grown into one of our most sought-after whiskey brands. Attractively priced and expertly crafted, they are true standouts in a crowded category. We’ve received in two more casks of these amazing whiskies and expect them to fly out the door just as their predecessors did. The buzz around this heavenly pair reached a feverish pitch after they earned Whiskey of the Year and Rye of the Year titles from The American Distilling Institute. Founded back in 2010, Woodinville’s mission was a simple one: to craft authentic grain-to-glass whiskies. Partnering with third-generation farmers for their grains and employing the prodigious talents of the late Maker’s Mark master distiller David Pickerell, founders Brett and Orlin hit upon the perfect recipe for success. No corners are cut at Woodinville and it shines through in their truly transcendent bottlings. With all of this high praise, one might expect to pay well into the $100s. Remarkably, both sell for under $70! The team at Woodinville have truly done a bang-up job crafting must-have whiskies at more-than-reasonable prices. Be sure to lock your bottles in now as they are destined to sell in a flash.

Woodinville “K&L Exclusive” Single Cask #1307 Cask Strength Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml) ($69.99)

The first single casks of Woodinville bourbon to be available outside of Washington are finally here at K&L! While the launch of Woodinville’s core bourbon and rye into the California market last summer was a huge hit, we had people begging us for cask strength bottlings. Fortunately, the folks in Washington were happy to oblige. We secured the first two of only four casks being released to California this year. They’re a doozy. Clocking in at 123.14 proof, cask #1307 is boisterous. It’s loaded with cherries, chocolates, citrus, and cinnamon. The palate is enormous. The sweet and peppery spice explodes and takes over. On a second sip the sweetness of chocolate and toffee comes back and hangs around on the finish. If you’ve enjoyed the regular bourbon release, this is a super limited must-have that will blow it out of the water.

Here’s a great summer sipping bourbon. The nose is redolent with scents of fresh orange and lemon zest. Then aromas emerge of herbal cough drops, polished oak, and old leather. The palate presents luscious caramel apple and more herbaceousness. The bright citrus notes remain present through the ride, keeping the whiskey fresh, bright, and lip-puckering.

Jeffrey Jones | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 17, 2019

I have liked the Woodinville products since K&L first bought them for the store. This single cask of bourbon showcases this excellent spirit. There are beautiful aromatics that are full, complex and pretty. In the mouth it is complex, round and soft, a full bodied bourbon with a touch of spice. A great bourbon from the state of Washington.

Jackson Lee | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 12, 2019

This was a fantastic surprise coming from a craft distillery in Washington. With full sized barrels and grain to glass production, you can taste that no shortcuts were made. The nose elicits notes of roasted coffee with raspberry syrup and a hint of fennel while the palate is silky, smooth, and has a sweet corn note, which plays with a cinnamon flavor very well. The finish is long with anise and brown sugar leading you out. A fun and different bourbon whiskey from what’s making it out of Kentucky.

KL2

Woodinville “K&L Exclusive” Single Cask #1320 Cask Strength Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml) ($69.99)

Cask #1320 sports a rippin’ 122.52 proof and intense chocolate and varnish and dried citrus aromas. The wood is really the star here. The back of the palate is caked in sweet cocoa and vanilla cream. It lasts for minutes on end and holds the proof perfectly. A real beauty.

Neal Fischer | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 09, 2019

This single barrel is leaner and more punchy than the other one we got for K&L. There’s still a nice citrus touch here, but gone is the rich caramel lusciousness. This barrel (1320), is much brighter and more austere. The nose offers bold snappy spice with dusty peppercorns, cinnamon powder, and cayenne laid thickly on polished oak. The palate feels even spicier with an excellent bite, yet more nuanced herbal elements offer balance including a cooling fresh mint note. The only richness comes in the form of vanilla bean and butter in the mid palate before the spice and oak tannins return with vigor for a long and tongue-tingling finish.

Scotch Tasting

Thursday August 8th. 2019

Mossburn with Brian Johnson

4;30 P.M. OR 6:00 P.M.

We will have Brian Johnson in from Mossburn Distillers and bottlers. This is a fairly new brand but they have been laying down barrels, and also have three new distilleries. One of which is on the Isle of Sky. Brian Johnson will lead us through their line up of single malts. There are also two regional malts that are vatted; all single malts. One is from Speyside, and the other is Islands and they work the wood on these two. They receive a second maturation which we will talk about at the tasting.

We will have the list of whisky and pricing next week. This will be a very nice tasting so mark your calendar
