Best Blended Malt under 12 Year Old – Scottish Whisky Awards 2019

Introducing Compass Box Myths & Legends at The Whisky Shop – Scotch Whisky News

Introducing Compass Box Myths & Legends

Designed to challenge the ‘myths and legends’ that are often perceived as the rules of Scotch whisky, discover three new fantastic expressions from the famed blender Compass Box. Available to pre-order from The Whisky Shop. Scroll down to learn more about each expression in the new Myths and Legends series.

Compass Box Myths & Legends I

The first of the trio has been produced with two parcels of Highland single malt whisky, each from Balblair distillery, but with markedly different flavour profiles. The Whiskymakers believe that the marriage of the parcels in this single malt affords a new understanding of what the distillery can produce. Crafted with 15-year-old, 16-year-old and 22-year-old whisky, this first release is bottled at 46% abv and limited to just 4,394 bottles worldwide.

Compass Box Myths & Legends II

This release is produced with whiskies of different ages, all distilled at Glen Elgin distillery in Speyside. The Whiskymakers set out to showcase the influence not of region, but of process decisions at the distillery, the effects of maturation, and the choices made in the balance of the final blend. Crafted with whisky ranging from 16 to 23 years old, this second release is bottled at 46% abv and limited to just 4,446 bottles worldwide.

Compass Box Myths & Legends III

The final entry of the series has been produced with the same parcels of Glen Elgin malt whisky as Myths & Legends II, with the addition of liquid from Highland Park and Caol Ila. The Whiskymakers set out to dispel the belief that famous single malts shouldn’t be blended. Crafted with whisky ranging from 15 to 23 years old, this third release is bottled at 46% abv and limited to just 4,564 bottles worldwide.

Scotch Whisky Industry comes together for one-off auction in aid of leading Scottish charity – Scotch Whisky News

Scotch Whisky Industry comes together for one-off auction in aid of leading Scottish charity

A unique collection of extremely rare Scotch Whiskies will go under the hammer later this month as the Scotch Whisky industry joins forces to raise money for Beatson Cancer Charity.

The Scotch Whisky Industry Charity Auction for Beatson Cancer Charity will feature over 100 rare and prestigious whiskies from Scotland’s finest distilleries with an estimated auction hammer price value of over £110,000. Interest in the auction is expected to be high due to the rarity of the bottles on offer.

Inspiration for the auction came from the former Edrington Chief Executive Ian Curle, who benefitted first-hand from the skill and dedication of the clinicians at The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre, an internationally renowned institution.

The online auction will run from 13th-23rd September on Whisky Auctioneer, which is waiving its seller fee and donating its buyer commission to the charity.

Commenting on the auction, Ian Curle, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for the Scotch Whisky Industry to come together and raise a lot of money for a world-leading cancer centre. The whiskies donated demonstrate the true spirit of one of Scotland’s best-known industries.”

Iain McClune, Whisky Auctioneer Founder, said: “We are excited by the prospect of working in partnership with the Scotch Whisky industry to not only provide support and a platform to raise money for such an important cause, but also to raise awareness of Beatson Cancer Charity’s incredible work.”

Martin Cawley, Beatson Cancer Charity CEO, said: “Without the wonderful generosity of our supporters, Beatson Cancer Charity could not continue to support the thousands of patients and families facing cancer every year. The money raised from this auction will allow us to invest in a better future for cancer patients and their families.”

Karen Betts, Chief Executive of the Scotch Whisky Association, added: “The Scotch Whisky industry is very proud to be supporting the Beatson Cancer Charity auction and to help raise awareness about the incredible work they do in support of cancer patients across Scotland and their families.  I wish the auction, with its range of amazing whiskies, every success for The Beatson.”

Kavalan Solist Sherry Cask – Our Fastest-Selling Luxury Whisky Now Back In Stock – Taiwan Whisky News

One of the Hottest Names in Collectible Whisky Returns
2008 Kavalan “Solist – K&L Exclusive” Sherry Cask Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Taiwanese Whisky ($209.99)
“Little in the world compares to this…”—David Othenin-Girard, K&L SoCal Spirits Buyer

Now that Kavalan is a household name among whisky aficionados after garnering World Whisky of the Year and World’s Best Single Malt Whisky honors, their bottlings are disappearing from the market at an astonishing rate. Early last year, we had the incredibly rare opportunity to offer a single barrel of the Kavalan “Solist” Sherry Cask, which easily became one of our fastest-selling whiskies of 2018. In November, our minds were blown by the stupendous luck at gaining access to a second cask long after our first offer sold out. So now we don’t even know what to make of the fact that, once more, we recently stumbled across another miniscule stash of this collector’s dream. The third time’s a charm, as they say. Then again, so were the first two.

This particular cask was distilled in 2008 and bottled in 2013, after which it rested comfortably (and discreetly hidden or “lost”) in the distributor’s warehouse until we scored a sample. We were offered first crack at the remaining supply, and there was no question about what to do. This cask shows a rounder and slightly more decadent profile than its previous two sister casks while still maintaining that characteristic chewy density and weight for which the brand is known. Collectors the world over are going to great lengths (and expense) to get their hands on Kavalan’s single cask whiskies, and this one is available nowhere else. Whether you secured some of this stunning juice on the last two go-rounds or you just missed the train, this is an opportunity that must be seized.

2008 Kavalan “Solist – K&L Exclusive” Sherry Cask Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Taiwanese Whisky (750ml) ($209.99)

The spectacular Kavalan Sherry Cask “Solist” has become harder and harder to get. The importer used to bring samples by once or twice a year and we’d get to pick one and pray it showed up, but now they’ve got a number of other flavors they’re focusing on and the incredibly delicious Sherry Cask, their most highly regarded regular release, has become extremely limited. That’s why we were absolutely flabbergasted to find that an entire cask of Solist Sherry (Solist is the international name for the cask strength single barrels and the name does not appear on the label) had been sitting in the importer’s warehouse for several years. We got our hands on a sample and fell in love. This wild cask of Kavalan was distilled way back in 2008 and bottled almost five years ago. It’s been waiting in the wings while our single barrels have come and gone. We’re not sure if this cask was partially sold into other markets, but we bought all 40 cases left. While that might seem like a lot, we typically get 80+ out of a sherry butt. Due to the incredible scarcity and allocated nature of this product, we don’t expect it to last very long. The style here is sweeter and rounder than some of the hardcore tannic versions we’ve had in the past. Deep fruit compote, bold exotic spices and roasted hazelnuts coupled with a rich chewy texture that’s become the hallmark of this exceptional bottling.
