Sullivans Cove ~ American Oak – Including Our *Oldest Release To Date* – Tasmanian Whisky News

SCW1

Available now are two different casks of our American Oak expression: one 12 year old and one Old & Rare 18 year old  – the oldest whisky ever released by Sullivans Cove.

American Oak is our most awarded style, the first Australian whisky to receive Liquid Gold Status in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible and the only Australian whisky to ever be awarded “Best Single Cask Single Malt” at the World Whiskies Awards. Aged in 200L American oak ex-bourbon barrels, every small bottling reflects the unique characteristics of each individual cask.

Our American Oak bottlings are generally aged between 10-12 years and are a brilliant showcase of Tasmanian barley, with notes of bright grain and fruit as well as soft oak, vanilla and caramel.

But on rare occasions, our skilled distillers also identify a cask with the specific characteristics that lend to extended maturation. These Old & Rare casks are aged for a minimum of 16 years, and express incredible texture and complexity as well as surprising freshness given their age.

Today’s release gives you the opportunity to try either or both of these iconic Australian whiskies.

“A really textural and warming drop, this whisky is still fresh and bright, with all the warmth of a bakery on a winter’s morning.”

Wolfburn Laydown New release – Small Batch 375

The first quarter of 2019 has shot past in a flash – and as always it has been a hugely busy time at the distillery. Our third apprentice, Max, started in January – perfect timing, as we’ve been dispatching bottles to every corner of the world ever since he joined.

Morven has now overtaken Northland as our biggest selling expression – and it’s just scored a Double Gold Medal in the FiftyBest competition! Langskip – which has proved hugely popular since its launch in September – came close behind with a Gold Medal of its own.

In the immediate future you’ll see our third small-batch release, Batch 375, hit the shelves. More on that here. Looking ahead to May, Wolfburn is one of eight distilleries taking part in the inaugural Highland Whisky Festival. Commencing on Friday 10th May, visitors to Wolfburn will be able to buy a bottle specially created for the Festival.

Further ahead, readers in the Caithness area this August can expect another special release for the Mey Highland Games. And there’ll be the fifth release in the Kylver collectors’ series shortly afterwards too.

In the meantime, allow us sign off with these wise words: “Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whisky is barely enough!”

Whisky Tasting Diploma Launched by Edinburgh Whisky Academy – Scotch Whisky News

20190305_EWA_023_zpsqtcfsyrh

Whisky Tasting Diploma Launched by Edinburgh Whisky Academy

Whisky enthusiasts, brand ambassadors, whisky and hospitality professionals and sommeliers are set to benefit from the Edinburgh Whisky Academy’s latest course – a Diploma in the Art of Tasting Whisky.

Fully accredited by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA), the one-day course will offer candidates the chance to learn about the human olfactory system, flavour development and the influence of oak in the whisky-making process. Odour recognition tests will challenge them to recognise different smells and each participant will be taught a variety of different assessment techniques to boost their flavour recognition and flavour description skills. They will learn about the role of wood in the development of whisky flavour, including the different reactions that take place during maturation.  Candidates will also test a variety of differently-aged spirits and whiskies before moving on to learn about flavour manipulation.

The Diploma is the third whisky course to be launched by the Edinburgh Whisky Academy, which has provided training for some of Scotland’s top distillers and hospitality providers, including Ian Macleod Distillers, Chivas Brothers, Edrington, Montpeliers, and Whyte & Mackay.

The business was founded by Managing Director, Kirsty McKerrow, who worked as the Swedish brand ambassador for Glenmorangie and Ardbeg, among other whisky labels. Her family is steeped in whisky heritage; her forefathers starting Mackinlay’s whisky in 1815.  She established the Edinburgh Whisky Academy in 2015 to fill what, she felt, was a vital gap in the Scotch Whisky education market.

Managing Director, Kirsty McKerrow said; “When I started out as a brand ambassador, despite growing up surrounding by whisky heritage, I would have loved to have access to the more in-depth information that we now provide on our courses, which I know would have greatly helped me in my work.  Whisky is an incredibly complex spirit, with legions of fans across the globe, who have a desire to learn more about the whisky-making craft. This latest course will help whisky professionals and those involved in the hospitality industry to gain the knowledge that can help them deliver a richer whisky experience for their customers, and also offers enthusiasts the chance to delve deep into their favourite topic.”

Other courses offered by the Edinburgh Whisky Academy include the Introduction to Whisky Certificate, an online course aimed at whisky industry professionals, retailers, distributors, tour guides, hospitality staff and enthusiasts who perhaps can’t visit Scotland.  The Academy’s Diploma in Single Malt Whisky is the only one of its kind and offers a fully SQA-accredited qualification for brand ambassadors, spirits retailers, whisky and hospitality professionals, whisky writers and bloggers and distillery guides.

The first Diploma in the Art of Tasting Whisky takes place on 3 April at Arniston House, Midlothian and includes a formal assessment that candidates must pass in order to achieve their SQA certificate.  A further four courses are currently scheduled for 2019. Course costs are £480 per person, including VAT.

Mature Scotch Closeouts: Glenturret 30 & 34, Speyside (Glenfarclas) 40 & 41 at K&L California – Scotch Whisky News

KL-emailheader

Once in a blue moon, we are approached by one of our Scotch suppliers with a deal that’s simply too good to pass up. This is one of those occasions. Looking to move some inventory, Alexander Murray presented us with this quartet of mature whiskys at prices we simply couldn’t believe. As an independent bottler, Alexander Murray is well known for serving up some of the best values in the whisky biz, but this set takes things to another level entirely. We love opportunities such as this, as it enables us to offer some truly special whiskys to a much broader audience. We urge you to scroll below for the full details on these remarkable drams, as each possesses a personality and character that’s all its own. These are exactly the kind of whiskys that collectors search for far and wide. As you might expect, quantities are exceptionally limited and demand will be high, so you definitely don’t want to sit on your hands for this one.

1986 Glenturret 30 Year Old “Alexander Murray” Cask Strength Small Batch Single Malt Whisky (750ml) (Elsewhere $230) ($149.99)

After years of absolutely nobody ever asking about Glenturret, it’s suddenly become a place of serious intrigue. We hadn’t seen a good cask of Turret since 2015, but this year we received a massive sherry bomb from Old Particular, which was easily one of the best values we bottled all year. Then we get word their owners, the Edrington Group, are looking to sell the distillery after years in the shadows of their other two properties, Macallan and Highland Park. The spiritual home of the Famous Grouse blend, Glenturret is not Scotland’s most luxurious, but it does boast one of the oldest histories of distillation in Scotland. They claim that illicit distillation was occurring on the site in Crief as far back as 1717. The distillery buildings are hidden below the road and guarded by a large copper grouse. The small distillery boasts only 2 stills and produces less than 350 thousand liters of spirit a year. Compare that to the more than 8 million being made at Macallan and you can see why Edrington felt they wouldn’t miss the little guy. Ultimately, the Highland distillery produces a very solid spirit and when we can offer old cask strength Turret for a great price, we’ll always say yes. This small batch is drawn from three refill hogsheads and bottled at cask strength without chill filtration or coloring of any kind.

KL2

1984 Glenturret 34 Year Old “Alexander Murray” Cask Strength Small Batch Single Malt Whisky (750ml) (Elsewhere $250) ($179.99)

The underappreciated Glenturret Distillery isn’t on most single malt drinkers’ radar, but their position as one of the component whiskies to the popular Famous Grouse blend means they don’t have to be. They haven’t marketed any distillery bottlings in the States and the demand for the blend has meant very little makes it out to the independent bottlers. But our friends at Alexander Murray have had good success with bottling large volumes of malt for big box retailers and that’s allowed them access to some exceptional stocks at very reasonable prices. As they become more comfortable with bottling products at cask strength and marketing them to specialty retailers like K&L, we find more and more exceptional products that we can work with. This wonderful 34-year-old single malt is a perfect example. Originally priced to sell upwards of $300, the final bits of this need to move out of the warehouse so they’ve offered us an exceptional deal for the whole lot. While this one doesn’t have the power or intensity of the 30 year, it shows more complexity and tons of nuance. It’s very rare that we see even mediocre single malt at cask strength of this age for anywhere close to these prices, but almost unheard of from a relatively rare distillery like Turret. If this is the kind of product we continue to see from Alexander Murray, you can expect to see a lot more of it on the shelf in the future.

1972 Speyside (Glenfarclas) 40 Year Old “Alexander Murray” Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) (Elsewhere $700) ($474.99)

There has been wild speculation about where these outrageous 40-year-old single malts from Alexander Murray have come from. While many have speculated that these are from Glen Grant or Glenlivet, one little taste will tell a different story. And indeed, the supplier has confirmed, that while they are legally prohibited from revealing the source of this special whisky, it is from what some consider to be the FINEST Speyside whisky distillery in Scotland. That special, independently-owned plant on the road between Ballindaloch and Aberlour is a darling of many. Famous for big bold sherry, their single vintage family casks have become extremely expensive. So we were very surprised to hear that our friends at Alexander Murray had secured some older stocks, which they bottled way back in 2012-13. They’ve been trickling out to the market as people catch wind of their provenance and that they were well worth the extremely high prices that were originally asked. Some of the softest, roundest malt we’ve ever seen, there’s little opportunity to explore malt this old at anywhere close to this price. The only serious complaint is that it was bottled at 40%, which is a sacrifice we can live with, considering distillery bottlings from this vintage can cost several thousand dollars. It might not be the big, powerful sherry bomb that some aficionados expect, but it is easily the best 40-year-old malt $500 can buy.

Octomore 10 Dialogos at The Whisky Shop – Scotch Whisky News

Octomore 10 Dialogos

This third limited edition 10-year-old from the Octomore range was distilled at Bruichladdich in 2008 using 100% Scottish grown Optic barley. Matured in a selection of bourbon, cognac, port and virgin oak casks, it has been bottled at 56.8% abv and is super-heavily peated at 167ppm. Only 12,000 bottles have been filled as part of the Dialogos series from the Islay distillery.

On the nose there is a rich chocolate and tobacco note, followed by vanilla custard and blueberries. The palate is warming and spicy with tobacco, old leather, icing sugar and a wonderfully earthy peat smoke. The finish brings more oak and coconut to balance the peat, with a touch of vanilla re-emerging.
