NEW PACKAGING FOR JAMESON CASKMATES SERIES – Irish Whiskey News

NEW PACKAGING FOR JAMESON CASKMATES SERIES

Irish Distillers, makers of some of the world’s most enjoyed whiskeys, has unveiled a packaging revamp for its Jameson Caskmates Series.

The new look includes key updates on both expressions in the Caskmates range – Jameson Stout Edition and Jameson IPA Edition – in response to consumer research in key markets, including US, UK, South Africa and Ireland, which highlighted a desire for a simplified product proposition.

In line with these findings, a new ‘Caskmates Series’ family name will announce the range on the neck and back label. The main label will now feature a stronger focus on the varietal edition and a clear descriptor of ‘Whiskey Finished in Craft Beer Barrels’ to celebrate the liquid within. The back label also highlights the ‘Caskmates Series’ craft beer partner, Eight D Brewing, whose beers are used to season the casks before being filled with Jameson. Irish Distillers acquired Eight D Brewing in 2018 to secure a long-term supply of craft beer following the runaway global success of the Caskmates Series.   Almost 1 million 9 litre cases have been sold since the range was launched in 2015.

Commenting on the packaging revisions, David Quinn, Head of Whiskey Science at Midleton Distillery, explains: “The Caskmates Series was born of innovation – a creative experiment that tapped into the growing appetite for Irish whiskey and love of craft beer. It has been a hugely successful range for us, recording phenomenal growth since its launch in 2015 with global sales standing at almost 1 million 9 litre cases since launch. While the Caskmates Series has introduced new consumers to Jameson and excited existing Jameson fans, our research showed a need to simplify the product proposition. We are confident that this new streamlined look will play a role in ensuring continued growth for these exciting expressions.”

The new look Jameson Stout Edition and Jameson IPA Edition, both bottled at 40% ABV, will be shipped to the US from January 2020 and the rest of the world from March 2020. It will be available through retailers at the RRP of 120 index to Jameson Original as well as through leading bars and restaurants.

The Jameson Caskmates story began when Dave Quinn, Master of Whiskey Science in Midleton Distillery, met a local craft brewer in a local bar in Cork, Ireland. Dave agreed to loan the brewery some Jameson casks to discover their influence on his Irish stout. When the stout-seasoned barrels were returned to Midleton Distillery, Dave re-filled them with Jameson Irish whiskey, an experimental finishing process from which Jameson Stout Edition was born. Jameson IPA Edition was the second expression to be added to the range and is a triple-distilled Irish whiskey finished in IPA-seasoned barrels. Local craft brewery Eight D Brewing, from Mitchelstown Co. Cork is now the official partner for this product.

Since its launch, the Jameson Caskmates Series has satisfied the appetite for innovative and authentic tastes among whiskey enthusiasts, Jameson drinkers and craft beer fans in over 40 markets worldwide.

Notes

Jameson Caskmates Stout Edition Tasting Notes, by Brian Nation, Master Distiller in Midleton Distillery

Nose: An initial aroma of freshly cut hay is complemented by a crisp orchard fruit character – green apples and pears, with a twist of lime zest. Mild pot still spices appear, deepening from green tea to hazelnut and milk chocolate.

Taste: The initial sweet mouth coating typical of the Irish pot still inclusion is quickly complemented by the subtle touch of hops and cocoa beans from the beer cask finish.

Finish: Long and sweet with milk chocolate and butterscotch.

Jameson Caskmates IPA Edition Tasting Notes, by Brian Nation, Master Distiller in Midleton Distillery

Nose: Floral, herbal hops, grapefruit citrus notes with subtle orchard fruits, complimented by wood shavings and a little nuttiness.

Taste: Hops and light citrus with sweet herbal notes and delicate spicy tones.

Finish: The lingering fresh fruit and hops give way to grains of barley and a signature smooth finish.

Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 286: The Vikings 11 Year Old 2007 for MMM – Scotch Whisky News

Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 286: The Vikings 11 Year Old 2007 for MMM

Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky vlogger, presents his own newest release. We have arrived at the fourth and final release in MMM’s – Mark & Manny’s Malt – Tribe Series. Tradition dictated that Mark and Manny search for a smoky whisky and this year is no exception, but contrary to what you might expect they did not go for an Islay or Island whisky. No, they discovered this extraordinary cask… in the Highlands.  They are very happy that they can conclude their Tribe Series with such a lovely single cask. It was a year that will be hard to trump, but the hunt for new casks for their fifth year has already started.

AIOI UNIBIO RESTARTS DISTILLATION ON THE 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF THEIR FIRST DISTILLATION IN 1949 – Japanese Whisky News

A Japanese brewing and distilling company, AIOI UNIBIO (Aichi, Japan)

has re-started its distillation of whisky in 2019 on the 70th anniversary of their first whisky distillation in 1949.

AIOI UNIBIO once distilled their own whisky since 1949 and had many varieties of their own whisky brands in the 1950s, but stopped distillation after they experienced 2 historical natural disasters in the form of big typhoons. The 1st one was called Tess in 1953, and the 2nd one was Vera and happened in 1959 in which thousands of people were killed in Japan.

Due to the damage in their distilleries, they stopped whisky distillation for a long time, looking for the chance to restart the whisky-making in the future.

Finally, they have re-started distillation and filled an oak cask this year. The first oak cask is a very old one they last used in the 1950s.

To take advantage of their characteristics, the master brewer of Sake (Japanese rice wine) takes responsibility for the whisky fermentation process. Their original pot stills were developed with their own know-how through trial and error.

When they will have 150th company anniversary in 2022, they will release their first single malt whisky.

As the first step of this project, they released their original blended whisky “HINOTORI”, meaning ‘pheonix’ as a symbol of their whisky revival, with support from BBC SPIRITS in 2019.

Four Roses Small Batch Select Straight Bourbon Whiskey at K&L California – American Whisky News

Just named Third Best Whiskey in the World for 2019 by Whiskey Advocate!
Four Roses Small Batch Select Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml) ($54.99)

For the first time in almost a decade, Four Roses has added a new bourbon to their core lineup. This is a must for your holiday bar, while supplies last. Unless you’ve decided to rearrange your life and run an ongoing stakeout at your favorite retailer, finding Bourbon this good hasn’t been possible in quite a while.

Four Roses Small Batch Select Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml) ($54.99)

93 points Whisky Advocate: “The limited-edition releases from Four Roses are always top-notch, but this bourbona permanently available addition to the lineupproves itself every bit the equal of its rarer brethren. Made with the distillerys F yeast strain, among others, it has a perfumed nose, with orange blossom, cedar chest, berries, spearmint, tobacco leaves, sassafras, licorice, and layers of earthy spice. The palate is consistent and deep, with flavors of cherry Coke, cough syrup, orange oil, leathery dark fruit, black pepper, chili flakes, and chocolate, shifting into a minty finish replete with pepper, cinnamon, dark chocolate, cooked berries, and roasted walnuts. Full, rich, and utterly satisfying.”

K&L Notes: The Small Batch Select is a 104 proof bottling that is made from the following recipes: OBSV, OBSK, OBSF, OESV, OESK, OESF. It’s a blend of 6 and 7 year old bourbons and is a worthy addition. It’s loaded with spiciness and a bit of sweet fruit on the nose and morphs into vanilla, cigar box, and stone fruits on the palate. It finishes long and clean with a touch of fresh mint lifting it and begging you to sip again.

Alex Schroeder | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: November 27, 2019

Four Roses combined six of their popular mash bills to create a whiskey that is greater than the sum of the parts, as indicated by its Whiskey Advocate recognition as Third Best Whiskey in the World. Supremely sippable at 104 proof, but packing a punch of flavor nonetheless. A perfect combination of baking spice, creamy pear and apricot richness, rye spice and a touch of mint. At this price, it’s the perfect sipping/mixing/nosing bourbon to keep at the home bar, and it’s a permanent fixture at the distillery, so supply should be no problem on this one.

Andrew Whiteley | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: November 27, 2019

We’ve been quietly cranking through this incredible Four Roses offering since it launched earlier this year. It’s become a staple on the bar of nearly ever staff member in our Redwood City store and with good reason. Now with the major accolades bestowed upon it by Whiskey Advocate, I’m guessing it will be on nearly every whiskey lover’s bar by the end of the year. It is perfect holiday drinking. Loaded with insane amounts of cinnamon it would sit next to any dessert splendidly at Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner. Cigar box and cherry fruit notes blend together in a hedonistic concoction worthy of any bourbon lovers adoration. The oak vanillins carry sweetness to every corner of your mouth. The finish hints at the fresh mint and other herbal notes found in Four Roses F yeast strain. It goes on and on and then keep on going thanks to the 104 proof which is absolutely the best decision Four Roses could have made for a blend of this caliber. Huzzah to Brent Elliot – Master Distiller since 2015 and the Master Mind behind this great new offering.
