GORDON & MACPHAIL REVEALS UNIQUE SINGLE MALTS FOR CHRISTMAS – Scotch Whisky News

GORDON & MACPHAIL REVEALS UNIQUE SINGLE MALTS FOR CHRISTMAS

Single malt whisky creator Gordon & MacPhail has unveiled a duo of special bottlings from its iconic Connoisseurs Choice range for Christmas gifting.

The Connoisseurs Choice 1999 from Old Pulteney Distillery is joined by a Connoisseurs Choice 2004 from Glenlivet in a celebration of the Speyside and Highland regions.

The Connoisseurs Choice range, which marked its 50th anniversary last year, has featured more than 2,000 bottlings with releases from almost 100 distilleries from all over Scotland.

Stephen Rankin, Director of Prestige at Gordon & MacPhail said: “These Connoisseurs Choice releases are exceptional one-offs from some of Scotland’s most admired distilleries and are the perfect gift for whisky fans looking to explore and try unique, never-to-be-repeated expressions that are unavailable anywhere else.

“Passion for single malt Scotch whisky has been at the heart of our family business for four generations, with each sprit hand-selected from distilleries and matched with our casks before being patiently monitored throughout the maturation process, bottled only when it is ready.

“This careful process has resulted in a huge variety of vintages, finishes, flavours and strengths, creating something for every palate.”

Each whisky bottled by Gordon & MacPhail is the result of close relationships built over decades with distilleries, resulting in a collection of rare whiskies created by unique experience.

Gordon & MacPhail 1999 from Old Pulteney Distillery [RRP £141]

Located in the far north of the Scottish Highlands, Old Pulteney Distillery was established in 1826 in the historic Caithness fishing port of Wick. Known as a ‘maritime malt’, the liquid, distilled in close proximity to the coast, has an edge of salt to its otherwise sweet and malty style.

The Gordon & MacPhail 1999 from Old Pulteney Distillery is a warm and rich 19-year-old whisky laid down on 26 October 1999 in cask no.1457, a refill Sherry butt. Spending its whole life in the hand-selected cask, the liquid has taken on the spiced fruit aromas reminiscent of the festive season.

Just 554 bottles are available for purchase from selected specialist whisky retailers internationally.

Gordon & MacPhail 2004 from Glenlivet Distillery [RRP £101]

Glenlivet is one of the Gordon & MacPhail’s longest standing relationships, dating back to the 1930s when Glenlivet was one of only three operational distilleries in Scotland.

Only 162 bottles are available of this 14-year-old whisky from what has grown to become one of Speyside’s most sought-after distilleries. Following selection, the spirit was matched with refill bourbon barrel no.800670 and laid down on 10 November 2004.

A 14 year maturation in an ex-bourbon cask has left the whisky with fresh, wooded and sweet aromas combined with delicate floral notes from the distillation.

Laphroaig 30 Year “Limited Edition” Old Islay Single Malt Whisky at K&L California – Scotch Whisky News

Laphroaig 30 Year “Limited Edition” Old Islay Single Malt Whisky (750ml) $899.99 View

From the distillery: “In 2016, Laphroaig 30 Year Old was launched and in 2017 the 27 Year Old Double Matured Laphroaig continues this series. The entire range is presented in white wooden boxes with hand carved images of the distillery inside. To make this exquisite liquid, mature Laphroaig previously aged in refill hogsheads was transferred into first-fill ex-bourbon barrels and refill quarter casks. Patiently aged in Laphroaig’s famous Warehouse No. 1, these casks were then hand selected for a final maturation. This rare whisky features a touch of Laphroaig’s trademark peat smoke tempered by lime and sea salt. Each and every sip will be well worth the wait.”

The Story of the Spaniard at Tyndrum Whisky – Scotch Whisky News

Full, soft and sumptuous on the palate with flavours of citrus peel and pears poached in red wine and spices. Craig’s release of the year so far, this is stunning. To hear that it has a reasonable price tag makes it even better!

Official Tasting Notes:
Full, soft and sumptuous on the palate with flavours of citrus peel and pears poached in red wine and spices.
The finish is long, with hints of rich vanilla panna cotta, ripe berries and cherries.

This FIRST release – 48% of the whiskies have been aged in ex-sherry casks.

Inspired by an eponymously named bespoke whisky we recently created for a bar in New York City called The Spaniard, Compass Box decided to explore this style further to create a malt whisky blend with its core whiskies aged in Spanish Sherry and Spanish red wine casks. The result is this amazing whisky. The recipe can be viewed in images. From Compass Box.

Johnnie Walker Master Blender Dr Jim Beveridge receives an OBE for services to Scotch

Johnnie Walker Master Blender Dr Jim Beveridge receives an OBE for services to Scotch

Johnnie Walker Master Blender, Dr Jim Beveridge, has been awarded an OBE by Her Majesty The Queen for his outstanding service to the Scotch whisky industry.

Dr Beveridge was presented with his OBE medal by Her Majesty during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle, in recognition of his remarkable career spanning almost four decades with Diageo.

During his career Dr Beveridge has established himself as one of the most highly respected figures in the industry, renowned for his skill and dedication to quality, as well as his considered and unassuming manner.

The accolade comes as Johnnie Walker, the world’s most popular Scotch whisky, prepares to celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2020. Dr Beveridge is only the sixth person in two centuries of the company’s history to have held the position of Master Blender, the first being founder John Walker himself.

Commenting on the receiving the award Dr Beveridge dedicated it to his colleagues across the Scotch whisky industry. He said: “It was a wonderful experience to receive this award from Her Majesty the Queen and it is an honour that I am delighted to receive on behalf of all the people I have worked with in Scotch whisky over the past four decades.

“Scotch truly is a team effort at every step from grain to glass and it is a privilege to work in such a special industry. I dedicate this award to all the women and men in our distilleries, coppersmiths, cooperage, warehouses and bottling halls across Scotland who are all responsible for making Johnnie Walker.”

Congratulating Dr Beveridge on receiving his award, Diageo Chief Executive Ivan Menezes, said: “This is a very special day for Jim and his family and I am delighted to congratulate them on behalf of everyone at Diageo.

“Jim is renowned in the Scotch industry for his dedication to the craft of whisky-making and for the incredible whiskies he creates for Johnnie Walker, but he is also known as an exceptional colleague and friend to the people he works with. This is worthy recognition of an extraordinary career spanning four decades.”

Johnnie Walker Global Brand Director John Williams added his tribute: “Everyone in the Johnnie Walker family is delighted to see Jim receive this recognition for the remarkable contribution he’s made to Johnnie Walker and to Scotch whisky.

“Jim has not just been the guardian of almost two centuries of Johnnie Walker heritage, he has also been a restless pioneer, always learning and always seeking new frontiers of flavour in Scotch whisky.”

Johnnie Walker is at the heart of a £150 million investment programme in Scotch whisky tourism by Diageo, including creating a global flagship visitor attraction in Edinburgh and transforming the company’s 12 distillery visitor experiences around Scotland.

Barbara Smith appointed as General Manager of the Johnnie Walker visitor experience in Edinburgh – Scotch Whisky News

Barbara Smith appointed as General Manager of the Johnnie Walker visitor experience in Edinburgh

One of the UK’s most respected culture, leisure and tourism business leaders has been appointed to run the new global flagship visitor attraction for Johnnie Walker, the world’s leading Scotch whisky.

Barbara Smith will join Diageo as General Manager of the new Johnnie Walker Princes Street visitor experience in Edinburgh and will also be responsible for running the 14 distillery brand homes in Scotland, leaving her current post as Chief Executive of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland.

The Johnnie Walker Princes Street attraction is the focal point of Diageo’s £150 million investment in Scotch whisky tourism, which includes the transformation of the visitor experiences at the distilleries around Scotland.

Ms Smith has over 30 years leadership experience running some of the UK’s foremost leisure and tourist attractions, including Edinburgh Castle, Chester Zoo and Edinburgh Zoo, building a strong reputation for developing major visitor destinations.

Announcing the appointment Cristina Diezhandino, Diageo Global Scotch Whisky Director, said“We are absolutely delighted to have recruited a leader of Barbara’s quality to run our whisky visitor experiences in Scotland.

“She has an exceptional record of leadership at some of the UK’s most successful attractions and we are thrilled to have someone of such capability, experience and vision joining us. We look forward to working with Barbara to deliver our ambition of creating the world’s leading whisky destinations.”

Barbara Smith said: “I am incredibly excited to join Diageo and Johnnie Walker at a time when they are making such a major investment in the future of Scotch whisky tourism, both in Edinburgh with the Johnnie Walker Princes Street flagship and in distilleries around Scotland. I look forward enormously to playing a leading role in delivering this transformational programme.

“I would like to thank my colleagues at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland. It is a wonderful organisation and it has been a true privilege to lead them over the last few years. I wish everyone there the very best for the future.”

As well as creating the Johnnie Walker Princes Street global flagship Diageo’s whisky tourism investment will transform four distilleries – Glenkinchie, Cardhu, Caol Ila and Clynelish – that will be linked to the Edinburgh venue, representing the ‘four corners of Scotland’ and the regional flavour variations crucial to the art of making whisky.  Together these sites will create a unique Johnnie Walker tour of Scotland, encouraging visitors to the capital city to also travel to the country’s extraordinary rural communities.

Diageo is also investing over £35 million to restore the iconic lost distilleries of Brora in the Highlands and Port Ellen on Islay, which will take the number of distillery visitor experiences in Scotland to 14.
