A Can’t-Miss 30 Year Old Bunnahabhain – A K&L Exclusive – Scotch Whisky News

An Exclusive Bunna Cask Collectors Won’t Want to Miss
1988 Bunnahabhain 30 Year Old “Old Particular” K&L Exclusive Single Refill Hogshead Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) ($349.99)

Clocking in at an impressively powerful 57.3% abv, the Bunnahabhain 30 Year Old “Old Particular” is not for the faint of heart. Built on a grand scale, but also with the nuance for which this Islay distillery is known, it is a remarkable single malt that delivers on a multitude of levels. Offering a beguiling blend of candied fruits, subtle smoke, beeswax, mocha, and oak spice, it is every bit as compelling as one might expect from a 30-year-old rendition from this historic distillery. A survey of the market will reveal that similar expressions will set one back over $800, but here we have this blockbuster for only $349.99—once again proving the best Scotch values are found at K&L. Longtime collectors of Bunna won’t want to miss this thoroughly compelling expression as it reveals a classic profile but amplified and expanded. Simply put, this is Bunnahabhain at its very best.

Also of note is the Springbank 22 Year Old “Sovereign Wax Top.” Springbank is always an instant sell-out and this cask is already moving at an impressive clip. This is a stupendous expression, offering everything we look for in a classic Springbank. $400 is a steal for a bottling this universally celebrated and rare. Collectors with this 22 Year Old will count themselves lucky.

1988 Bunnahabhain 30 Year Old “Old Particular” K&L Exclusive Single Refill Hogshead Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) ($349.99)

Bunnahabhain has been doing its thing since 1881 with just a short shutdown in the early 1980s. The massive distillery was built at a time of booming confidence in the Scotch industry and everything about it reflects that, from the enormous sprawling distillery to the massive stills. Historically destined for blends such as Cutty Sark and Famous Grouse, it’s in the modern booming era of Scotch that Bunnahabhain has really come into its own as a single malt. Known today for its unpeated malt on an island famous for peated spirit, Bunna at 30 years old is a rarity and something something truly to behold. Last year we offered a 30 year old Bunna that clocked in at a modest 44% ABV, this year we have secured a refill hogshead cask of the same age that retained its proof and is as massive as the distillery itself – 57.3% ABV. That extra oomph translates into a combination of age and power that is virtually never available; especially for $350 bucks. Consider the 25 year old distillery bottling averages over $800 and the value here becomes abundantly clear. Just 140 bottles came out of this cask and they won’t last long.

We’ve worked with several old barrels of Bunnahabhain over the last few years. We’ve seen a wide variety of offerings from 23-30 years old. But these last two years we’ve been given access to two of the most special Bunnah’s we’ve ever sold, both distilled in 1988 and complete opposites in style. So if you have last year’s incredible refill sherry butt at 44.5% and you’re wondering why you’d buy another bottle from the same vintage, rest assured that this one is on the complete other end of the spectrum. What last year’s cask had in poise and ease of consumption, this one has in power and complexity. And it’s true, age is just a number, but there’s no doubt that the Laings have been stashing their best casks to be released at the BIG 30! I often don’t recommend drinking old whisky like this with too much water, but the proof is seemingly daunting and I think this whisky swims astonishingly well. Without water expect it to be rather shut down on the nose. Hints of malt, herbs, roots, salt, gravel and wisps of smoke. On the palate you can tell that behind the baffling nose is so much tension and complexity it’s brimming with power. Now proof this down under 50% and you’ll open up a completely unparalleled experience. The unique ability of Bunnah to seem of Islay without any peat is clear. Salted lemon peel, oolong, hints of camphor/creosote, gentian, lemongrass and the tiniest bit of ozone. The palate is ultra linear and long. Grassier than the nose and cleaner. A bit of earthiness and the bold citrus and salt that I loved on the nose. Powerful, tense, unrelenting and wild. Not as simple and forward as last year’s, but arguably a more exciting malt for those who love the true essence of Bunnahabhain. Don’t forget the water or you’ll end up a bit disappointed.

Andrew Whiteley | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: November 21, 2019

This whisky is stunningly complex. While we had a 30 year old Bunna last year that was dark with sherry, this impressive cask is all about the character of the malt itself. It is a perfect example of why Bunnahabhain is such a well regarded distillery. The malt itself feels drizzled in honey. A slight cream provides richness. There is a dizzying array of fruit that ranges from tropical pineapple to honeycrisp apples. It’s basically a breakfast bowl of yogurt, granola, and fresh fruits, but with an enormous wallop of power. Under the obvious notes on the nose is a gentle sea brine and herbal quality both of which provide lift and freshness. The body is full, but not heavy. And the finish lights up your tastebuds with the prickliness of high proof and the sweetness of creme brulee. A masterpiece malt not to be missed by any serious whisky drinker or collector.

This 30 year old single malt is alive and packed full of drinking pleasure. In the nose there are savory and malt notes. In the mouth it is light bodied but is mouth coating with delicate savory flavors. With a splash of water the nose opens up and provides savory and bees wax aromas. In the mouth it becomes softer and more delicate. This excellent single malt offers finesse and shows what Bunnahbahain distillery is capable of producing.

Jackson Lee | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: November 15, 2019

This dram had a certain je ne sais quoi about it. Everything from the nose to the finish blew me away. Pretty and elegant on the nose with a delicate hint of smoke with red summer berries and canned mandarin oranges. The palate was equally as impressive, with more of a sweet tangerine flesh note with light oak tones and chocolate malt; it felt like sunshine in my mouth. The finish didn’t disappoint, as the sun started to set it left me with a flavor that reminded me of one of my favorite candies- peach gummy rings. This is an absolute dream of a Scotch, no water necessary, and with tariffs going up, I’d definitely pick this bottle up for future consumption.

Springbank 22 Year Old “Sovereign Wax Top” K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Campbeltown Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) ($399.99)

We had an exceptional cask of Springbank last year that sold out after almost no effort on our part. We only received 78 bottles from that cask because it had supposedly been split with another market. As it turns out, we might have found the rest of that cask. The supplier is unable to confirm if this is the rest of the cask that we didn’t get last year or if in fact it is a sister cask. Again we’ve only been allocated a tiny amount (108 bottles) and the proof is slightly lower by one tenth of one percent. If it is indeed the same juice, it certainly is not the same bottle. Last year’s came in the Hunter Laing Old & Rare packaging while this year’s is bottled under the Sovereign line with a handsome wax top to indicate it’s of a different caliber than most Sovereign bottlings. Regardless of the cagey back story, this stupendous example of Scotland’s most (read ONLY) old-style distillery is a true wonder. The distillery releases a 21-year-old at 46% which easily fetches $400, but never achieves quite what these single casks can deliver. There’s no question that these old Springers are expensive, but in context their quality, scarcity, and the enormous amount of care and energy that go into producing this whisky means that it should be considered by all who care to be the very most valuable commodity in the whisky drinking world. We certainly think it’s worth every penny we’re charging and maybe much more.

David Othenin-Girard | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: November 20, 2019

I was absolutely obsessed with the magical 22 year old Springbank we sold last year. That special cask only turned out 78 bottles and I was under the impression that the rest had gone to Europe. Now I’m not so sure. When Hunter Laing said they had another 108 bottles of 22 year old Springbank, they couldn’t confirm that it wasn’t the exact same. Upon tasting it there’s almost no doubt that this is either the same cask or a sister cask of very similar quality. It’s a pretty weird thing to have happen, especially when Scotland is being tight lipped about it, but I’m not complaining or questioning it for one second. I think I called last years whisky, “a living legend in our midst.” It sounds like hyperbole, but this is truly one of the finest modern Springbanks I’ve ever tasted. Very much in the old style (although it begins rather restrained) it’s packed with layer upon layer of complex flavor. Light peat, camphor, new Jordans, expensive non-scented candles. On the palate surprising big Campbeltown peat. Big smoke, tons of tension. But with just a little tiny smidge of water, the nose explodes from the glass. Soot, cigars, lemons, leather, creosote, fresh tennis balls, quince jam, chamomile, coriander, thujone, more and more keeps coming out. On the palate it’s now pure Highland peat—smoked lemons, menthol, citrus oil, green tea, hints of candied stone fruits, grains of paradise and an almost numbing feeling that brings me back to absinthe. The finish is long and lingering, the menthol note keeps coming back with every breath in. This one is emotional. Satisfying to the soul. Exhausting. I’m winded. We keep pointing back at Springbank, there’s just nothing like it. The difference between modern whisky and real whisky, the answer is right here.

JACK DANIEL’S BRINGING HOLIDAY CHEER TO FRIENDS WITH SPECIAL BARREL TREES WHILE HELPING OUR MILITARY FAMILIES – American Whiskey News

JACK DANIEL’S BRINGING HOLIDAY CHEER TO FRIENDS WITH SPECIAL BARREL TREES WHILE HELPING OUR MILITARY FAMILIES

Top Barrel of Each Tree to be Auctioned Off with Proceeds Going to the Distillery’s “Operation Ride Home” Program

LYNCHBURG, Tenn. (November 7, 2019) – The Jack Daniel Distillery will be bringing holiday cheer and sharing a special Lynchburg tradition this year with the building of five whiskey barrel trees around the country.

The distillery’s holiday tradition began in 2011 with the first 26-foot tall tree made from 140 American white oak whiskey barrels being built in Lynchburg, TN, home of Jack Daniel’s.  That tree will once again go up and replicas will be built in Chicago, IL, Dallas, TX, Milwaukee, WI, and Nashville, TN.

As part of its “Operation Ride Home” program, the famed distillery and partner, the Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA), will auction off the top barrel of each tree with proceeds going to assist junior-enlisted service members and families travel from their place of military service to back home for the holidays. Since the program began, 7,232 junior-enlisted service members and those with families have made the trip home to see loved ones over the holidays because of Operation Ride Home. Men and women from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard have been assisted with travel to all 50 states.

“At Jack Daniel’s, we like to say that good cheer is our number one export to the world,” said Master Distiller Jeff Arnett. “The barrel tree in Lynchburg has a special way of bringing people together, just like Operation Ride Home, and we hope friends either living in or visiting these locations will stop by and join us as we celebrate this most special holiday season. After all, it’s not what’s under the tree that’s important, but who’s around it.”

Jack Daniel’s only uses new charred oak barrels to make its whiskey and they are never filled a second time. The barrels that will be used to build all the trees were earlier entrusted to mature the famed Tennessee Whiskey and will now be bringing another special holiday ‘spirit’ to many of their friends around the country.

BOTTLE YOUR OWN 40-YEAR-OLD WHISKY AT ABERFELDY DISTILLERY – Scotch Whisky News

BOTTLE YOUR OWN 40-YEAR-OLD WHISKY AT ABERFELDY DISTILLERY

Hamilton, Bermuda, 18th November 2019 – ABERFELDY has today announced the release of its most distinguished Golden Dram – ABERFELDY 40 Years Old – available only from the distillery itself as a hand-bottled exclusive.

For more than 120 years ABERFELDY has been crafting some of Scotland’s most beguiling single malt whiskies, with the single cask being its ultimate expression. ABERFELDY 40 Years Old is the distillery’s oldest whisky yet and will be released in three single cask editions.

To uncover a parcel of whisky of this age with such distinct personality and excellence is indeed, a rare find. Resting in oak since the whisky was distilled back in the late 70’s, ABERFELDY’S Malt Master, Stephanie Macleod delved in to the distillery’s reserves and uncovered three separate single casks, all with remarkable qualities. Very few casks of this age survive the maturation process with enough vivacity left in them to make a truly great whisky, often having lost over 50% of the cask’s contents to evaporation.

“To find one cask at this venerable age, is extraordinary but to find three, is exceptional” says Stephanie Macleod, Aberfeldy’s Malt Master, adding: “just think of the four decades of history these casks have slumbered through.”

Filled on 22nd August 1978, all three casks are American Oak, ex-Bourbon Hogsheads. The first to be released is cask #5029, the second in the line-up will be cask #5030, with cask #5031 being the final in this collection, to be bottled as ABERFELDY 40 Years Old.*

Offering an ultra-premium, hands-on experience, purchasers will be given the opportunity to fill their own bottle, by hand, directly from the cask, in the distillery’s historic warehouses.

Stephanie comments: “The single cask is something that we at ABERFELDY bottle rarely – to have the honour of filling your very own bottle of our oldest and most exclusive whisky yet, is a truly special opportunity. The golden hallmarks of the distillery are evident; beautifully-balanced, elegant and well-mannered with peerless texture, perfectly expressed by these 40-year-old bottlings.”

On sale for £2,500 a bottle, ABERFELDY 40 Years Old will be exclusively available from the Aberfeldy Distillery, both on-site and via its new online shop: www.aberfeldy-40-whisky.com.

Notes:

*Malt Master, Stephanie Macleod’s tasting notes:

2nd release:

Cask #5030 47.3% ABV, 134 bottles

“Lemon curd on buttered toast, delicately balanced with notes of thyme and rosemary and a creamy caramel finish. Full bodied and endlessly smooth on the palate.”

3rd release:

Cask #5031 46.1% ABV, 97 bottles

“Charming citrus scented crème brûlée, fresh peaches and soft oak. On a palate a smooth and complex finish awaits.”

Laphroaig® 25 Year Old Whisky Celebrates the Life of Bessie Williamson – Scotch Whisky News

Laphroaig® 25 Year Old Whisky Celebrates the Life of Bessie Williamson

Laphroaig® recently released a super-premium 25-year-old whisky, which celebrates the life of Bessie Williamson, an icon of Laphroaig® and the first female distillery manager to own and run a Scotch whisky distillery in the 20th century.

This unique and exclusive bottle, called The Bessie Williamson Story™, is a tribute to Bessie and her work at Laphroaig, along with her warm, rich and unmistakably-Islay character.

Williamson was born in Glasgow in 1910 to John Williamson, a gunner in France with the Royal Garrison Artillery and Agnes Whyte. She attended the University of Glasgow from 1927, intending to become a teacher, graduating in 1932.

After graduating in 1932, Bessie accepted a summer job at Laphroaig distillery intending to stay only a few months. She worked directly with then owner Ian Hunter, eventually taking on responsibility for US distribution. By World War II, she had become the full-time distillery manager and the most senior woman in the Scotch industry.

Bessie was an early proponent of single malt scotches who played a pivotal role in positioning Laphroaig, and by extension other Islay malts, for the American market. The Scotch Whisk(e)y Association named Williamson as its American spokesperson from 1961 to 1964 and she toured the US representing Islay whisky to buyers and distributors.

The Bessie Williamson Story™ is presented in a beautifully crafted book that details Bessie’s story in depth, and includes tasting notes and a message from John Campbell, Distillery Manager.

Laphroaig is a globally recognised whisky thanks to Bessie,” John said. “It is well documented that Bessie was universally loved and respected by her colleagues at Laphroaig and the people of Islay. It is this aspect that we celebrate with this whisky, remembering her as a true icon of Laphroaig.

Laphroaig 25 Year Old The Bessie Williamson Story is available exclusively in Global Travel Retail.

ABOUT LAPHROAIG®
Laphroaig (La-‘froyg) literally means “the beautiful hollow by the broad bay.” Born from the streams and blue peat smoke of Islay, Laphroaig is a Single Malt Scotch Whisky with a distinct taste and story in every bottle. The secret to Laphroaig is that it benefits from the happy circumstances of where it is produced—next to ocean water and on land that gives Laphroaig a unique peaty taste. It is one of only a few distilleries that still uses traditional malting floors and dries and infuses its own malt with the thick blue smoke from old peat-fired kilns. It’s also the only Single Malt Scotch Whisky to bear a Royal Warrant bestowed by HRH Prince Charles.

Isle of Arran Distillers announce new Distillery Manager for Lochranza Distillery – Scotch Whisky News

Isle of Arran Distillers announce new Distillery Manager for Lochranza Distillery

Isle of Arran Distillers Ltd has appointed David Livingstone as the new Distillery Manager at their Lochranza Distillery, with James MacTaggart moving to take on the role of Director of Production & Operations for both Lochranza and Lagg Distilleries.

Following a lengthy recruitment process, Livingstone, who is originally from Islay, will be swapping whisky islands and bringing his experience across to Arran this month.

He has previously worked at Laphroaig Distillery, working his way up to Assistant Manager at the renowned organisation, and has more recently been involved in setting up the production process systems and assisting with the design at Islay’s newest distillery, Ardnahoe, which opened earlier this year.

His involvement in the process gives him the hands-on experience required to oversee day-to-day operations at the Lochranza Distillery, which produces approximately 600,000 litres a year, as well as a full grasp of all the necessary regulations that are required in modern whisky production.

The appointment comes towards the end of a busy year for the island distillers as they opened Lagg Distillery, their second site on the island producing peated spirit, and launched a new look and packaging re-brand across their core range of Arran Single Malts.

New Distillery Manager, Livingstone, said: “It’s an especially exciting time to take on this role at such a remarkable whisky company and I’m very proud to be given the opportunity to look after the future of these great spirits.

“Our range of Arran Single Malts are loved across the world, and my main priority is to ensure that the quality is preserved going forward.

“Being from the islands myself, I recognise how important distilleries are to island communities and that’s something I’ve always been passionate about. The Isle of Arran Distillers is proud to continue to operate as an independently owned distillery that has the local people at its core.”

James MacTaggart, who has been Master Distiller at Isle of Arran Distillers since 2007, will take on a new role as Director of Production & Operations, overseeing both the Lochranza and Lagg Distillery sites.

MacTaggart said: “As the company continues to grow and develop, it’s necessary that we have the best whisky people around us. We’re delighted to have David on board for the next part of our journey and know that we can learn plenty from his wealth of knowledge and experience.

“I’m thoroughly looking forward to my new role as Director of Production & Operations and the opportunity to ensure the excellence of our Arran Single Malts is maintained, while introducing people to our new distillery at Lagg and eventually the whisky we’ll produce there.”

BONHAMS SETS NEW WORLD AUCTION RECORD FOR A WHISKY CASK – Scotch Whisky News

BONHAMS SETS NEW WORLD AUCTION RECORD FOR A WHISKY CASK

Hong Kong – An exceedingly rare 30 year whisky sherry hogshead cask from the famed Macallan Distillery achieved HK$4,464,000/ US$572,000, setting a new world auction record for a whisky cask at Bonhams sale of Fine and Rare Wine and Whisky on 15 November. Estimated at HK$3,600,000 – 4,600,000, this is one of the oldest editions of Macallan whisky cask currently available in the market.

Distilled in May 1989 and never since been moved from the distillery, this cask with perfect provenance can be stored at Macallan for as long as the buyer wishes, or yielded into a total of 261 bottles by an independent bottler.

Daniel Lam, Bonhams’ Director of Wine & Spirits, Asia, explains: ‘Not only has this 30 year-old cask set the new world auction record for a whisky cask, but it is also the most expensive per bottle cask ever sold at auction, and is expected to produce 261 bottles valued at HK$17,103/ US$2,200 per bottle.’

This marks the second whisky world auction record set by Bonhams in 2019. Only three months ago, Hanyu Ichiro’s Full Card Series established a new record for a Japanese whisky collection for HK$7,192,000 (US$917,000), selling to an Asian female collector.
