Benromach sprinkles a little Christmas magic with social media advent calendar – Scotch Whisky News

Benromach (3)

Benromach whisky lovers can look forward to a little Christmas magic this year as the Forres distillery gets ready to launch its own online advent calendar as it counts down to the big day.

With weekly opportunities to win prizes ranging from a bottle of the flagship Benromach 10 Years Old to a limited edition Benromach 20th Anniversary Bottling, worth £299, there’ll be an extra gift under the tree for a lucky few.

Packed with fun facts, helpful tips including opening times for tours over the festive season and insights into how Benromach is handcrafted; the countdown starts on 1st December across Instagram, Facebook and Twitter with the #BenromachChristmasMagic.

Keith Cruickshank, Distillery Manager, explains: “We wanted to give something back to our loyal social media followers this Christmas who have supported us throughout the year and shared their Benromach moments. I am looking forward to spreading a little Christmas magic and sending out some early Christmas presents during our weekly competitions.

“The countdown is the final celebration in what has been an incredible 20th anniversary year for us all, celebrating two decades since the Urquhart family reopened Benromach Distillery in 1998.

“This year, we’ve hosted a record number of visitors, received 5-Star visitor attraction status from VisitScotland, released our first ever cask in aid of charitable causes and hosted the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival opening gala dinner to name just a few highlights. I’ve even learned how many reindeer would have to stand on top of each other to reach the height of our iconic 90 foot high chimney!”

To be in with a chance of winning a prize and to enjoy the Benromach countdown to Christmas, please follow us on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter (@Benromach) and use #BenromachChristmasMagic.

100% of Proceeds to the Calgary Interfaith Foodbank!

Shelter Point Distillery Manager Jacob Wiebe will be crossing the Rockies to join us for a Shelter Point Cask Release party on Wednesday December 12, 6PM. The cost is $25, with 100% of the proceeds going to the Calgary Interfaith Foodbank. You will receive a keepsake Glencairn glass and have the opportunity to sample 5 different Shelter Point whiskies including our 2 new KWM exclusive single casks.

  1. Shelter Point Rye KWM Cask – 59.6% – 9 Year – Our first ever KWM exclusive single cask of 100% rye whisky was selected by our team at Shelter Point Distillery on Vancouver Island, but it was distilled in Calgary at Alberta Distillers… Distilled in 2009 the whisky has been bottled after 9 years at 59.6%. 240 total bottles! – Andrew’s Tasting Note: “Nose: maple syrup, peanut brittle, cloves just plucked from a honey baked ham and treacle tarts; oily with loads of spice; there was a hint of dill at first but it quickly vanished; dark fruits, licorice root and fig jam; oh and glazed pork belly (seriously). Palate: big, oily, syrupy and spicy; decadent Demerara and brown sugars before bacon infused dark chocolate and crisp spices: fennel, cloves and licorice root; more cloves plucked from a honey baked ham and sweet and sour pork; silky vanilla with dates and figs are late to the party. Finish: insanely long, oily, coating and decadent with more dark fruits and soft spices; a touch of glazed pork belly. Comment: wow… this was a serendipitous discovery on visiting Shelter point with Evan and Curt in September; if it doesn’t sell out before Christmas I’ll be shocked!” – $120
  2. Shelter Point Single Malt KWM Cask – 59% –  6 Year – Our first ever KWM exclusive single cask of Canadian single malt whisky is from our friends at Shelter Point Distillery on Vancouver Island. Distilled in May 2012, Cask No. 206 was selected by the KWM team and bottled in October of this year at 6 years of age. Only 162 total bottles. – Andrew’s Tasting Note: “Nose: honeyed and fruity with juicy malt; a soft earthy minerality makes way for Jujubes and warm apple-cinnamon pie; fall grasses and faint sea breeze; orange and subtle cloves. Palate: round, juicy, fruity and warming; chewy malt, barley sugars and loads of candied citrus; the warm apple-cinnamon pie fresh from the oven is still there as are the Jujubes and honey tones; the body is smooth and creamy with soft spices; a touch of savoury maritime notes. Finish: warm, coating, decadent and fruity; the finish is long and smooth. Comment: this 6 year old Canadian single malt is lovely; it is fruity and round with some lovely layers and oils; it is a sure sign of the even greater things still to come from Shelter Point!” – $116

Introducing: Octomore 9.1 & 9.3

More of the World’s peatiest malts!

We are receiving a small quantity each of the Octomore 9.1 and 9.3 on Wednesday next week, and based on pre-orders, we don’t expect them to last long!

  1. Octomore 9.1 – 59% – 5 Year – 156ppm – Matured in American Oak – 100% Scottish Barley – Distiller’s Tasting Note: “Character: Refined, sleek, confident in its youth. Older than its years. Aroma: Smoke and oak, intense sweetness from the cask, vanilla, cinder toffee. The smoke is thick, velvety and vegetal, peat and earthy. Taste: Soft on the palate- no aggression, nutty, fudge, nougat, delicate coconut and rose petal floral. Finish: Long peat finish, hints of treacle, warm sand/salt.” – $140
  2. Octomore 9.3 – 62.9% – 5 Year – 133ppm – Matured in Predominantly Refill Barrels – 100% Islay Barley, Irene’s Field on Octomore Farm – Distiller’s Tasting Note: “Character: Wild, Ileach, if this whisky could speak it would only speak in Gaelic. Atlantic coast raised. Out on the edge, the sense of place is strong. Aroma: Malted barley, Horlicks, the smell of the mash going into the mashtun. Heather wildfire, black tea, golden syrup, lemon sponge. Taste: Golden syrup in the tin, smoked tea, wort, malted barley, pear, peach melba. Sea spray, heather flowers. Finish: Smoke, toasted oak, rye bread, salt, ozone.” – $160

Introducing: Two Brewers Yukon Single Malt Batches 12 & 13

So limited they weren’t supposed to leave the Yukon!

We weren’t expecting any new releases from Two Brewers this year, and then they practically sold out of everything else they had in Alberta. So a few cases each of Batches 12 & 13 of the Two Brewers Yukon Single Malt, which were only going to be sold in the Yukon, were shipped south to Alberta. They are in very small quantities and won’t last long!

  1. Two Brewers Yukon Single Malt Batch 12 – 43% – Peated Style – Distiller’s Description: “Significant Munich malt mash used to build the body behind the peat. 60% liquid saw new wood. Bairds heavily peated malt is what we use, the specs give 25-50 ppm phenols.  Any peat added to a blend is from our 100% peat stock; releases 3, 7 & 12 are 24%, 37% & 57% respectively. Rel.12 has a much fuller base malt, so the peat perception still doesn’t come across strongly, but definitely builds on the palate. Not certain how much phenol losses are in the distillations, but also a consideration is losses in the barrel; much like yeast apparently, the barrel sucks up some of that concentration.” – Distiller’s Description & Tasting Note: “An unhurried nose, presents a complex peated medey, medicinal and smudgey, backed by the weighty base malt. A gentle, sweet and clean entry preludes a mid-palate burst of character. Caramel covered stone fruit in a swirl of smoky carbon, balanced, long and lingering.” – $100
  2. Two Brewers Yukon Single Malt Batch 13 – 43% – Classic Style – Distiller’s Description:“Numerous specialty grains used in the blend, and a significant portion was more finely distilled than typical. (fine distillation =  utilizing the plates, which we have only 4 in our column, but makes significant variations in the run) For the product, the finer distillation increases the abv of the product (~70% for our coarse, ~82% for a fine), resulting in general a whisky with higher tone congeners, and overall a lighter bodied effect. Distiller’s Tasting Note: “The vibrant nose is a dusting of nutmeg over nuts and dried apricot. The light bodied entry moves easily to an indulgant mid-palate of silky nougat, sugared dried fruit and cracked black pepper. Sweetened granola grains join at the finish, all lingering for extended contemplation.” – $100

EXPLOSIVE NEW SMOKEHEAD SHERRY BOMB – Christmas Shopping – Scotch Whisky News

2 SherryBomb_PackShot_TinBottle[5][1][1]

EXPLOSIVE NEW SMOKEHEAD SHERRY BOMB

Smokehead Sherry Bomb is a heavily peated Islay single malt that has been boldly blasted by sherry casks. It follows hot on the heels of Smokehead High Voltage, which was unveiled in April. Priced at £64.99, Smokehead fans will enjoy a full-bodied, 48% abv peaty whisky that’s heavily influenced by Oloroso Sherry casks to create a smoky, spicy and rich flavour.

Media Release;

UNLEASHING THE NEW LOUDER AND BOLDER SMOKEHEAD ISLAY SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY

Ian Macleod unveils the new look for Smokehead, the distiller has also revealed an intense new expression which is not for the faint hearted: Smokehead High Voltage.

Commenting on the new expression and bold new look, Iain Weir, Brand Director for Smokehead said: “Smokehead has always challenged the traditional whisky world with its unconventional look and attitude, appealing to the younger and adventurous whisky drinker. We’ve turned up the volume right across the brand. It’s not for everyone, but that’s ok”.

“And if Smokehead is an assault on your senses, then High Voltage is an all-out attack. Louder, bolder and more intense than getting put in a headlock from an angry roadie.”

The iconic skull logo now plays a much more dominant role on the label and striking gift tin. It takes on a more evocative and free-spirited style, with a rush of smoke blowing through the head to create an element of defiance.

One thing that hasn’t changed though is its bold and award-winning taste which still takes you on a fiery rollercoaster of peat, smoke and spice with a little delicate sweetness thrown in.

Smokehead is a premium whisky, as independent, strong and single minded as the people who drink it.

‘Smokehead’ and ‘Smokehead High Voltage’ are both available through specialists and multiples worldwide. Smokehead RRP £38.99 and High Voltage RRP £54.99.

 TASTING NOTES:

‘Smokehead’ (43% ABV)

  • The First Impression: The aroma of something powerful and fiery awaiting you. Thick, heavy woodsmoke. Rich, earthy peat. Extremes of spice and sweetness. Fresh lemon, zesty ginger, rich plum jam.
  • The Full-on Flavour: An explosion of breathtaking peppery, peaty heat, soothed by honeyed sweetness, before the smoke comes to the fore again.
  • The Finale: Exotic spices and a curious citrus tang of mandarin, both lulling you into a false sense of calm as the peat roars back to hit your senses again.

‘SmokeHead High Voltage’ (58% ABV)

  • The First Impression: Breathe it in and feel the rush of spirit hit the senses and the nose prickle. Intense peat and smoke, maritime air, porridge oats, clean vanilla and toffee.
  • The Full-on Flavour: A burn of hot spirit and the mouth fills with smoke, feeling almost thick with oiliness before softening and becoming creamier, with nutty, briny and citrus notes.
  • The Finale: The mouth is almost in shock, numb and tingling. A sweetness mixes nicely with the slowly fading smoke, leaving a salty tang.

BEAM SUNTORY DONATES $100,000 TO OPERATION HOMEFRONT’S HOLIDAY MEALS FOR MILITARY

A 10-year partnership, contributions top $3.5 million, with over 90,000 military families served

Chicago – November 15, 2018 –Beam Suntory, a world leader in premium spirits, has donated $100,000 to Operation Homefront, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to build strong, stable and secure military families. The funds will support Operation Homefront’s Holiday Meals for Military (HMFM) program, an annual initiative which began one year into Beam Suntory’s partnership with the nonprofit.

The HMFM program was inspired by a chance encounter in a supermarket on Thanksgiving Day 2009 in Utica, N.Y., near Fort Drum.  A Beam Suntory employee noticed that a young soldier shopping with his wife and infant was struggling to pay for his family’s groceries. The employee covered the cost, and eventually laid the foundation for what has become national program helping thousands of military families each year.

“To think that this all started with a random act of kindness is incredible, and we have been humbled to be a part of this program’s continued growth,” said Beam Suntory Chairman and CEO Matt Shattock. “Beam Suntory is committed to giving back to our communities, none more so than our brave service members and their families, and our decade-long partnership with Operation Homefront supports that important work.”

Beam Suntory’s contribution brings the company’s total support of cash and in-kind services to more than $3.5 million since 2008. The funds support the Holiday Meals for Military program, which will provide more than 7,600 family meals across the country this holiday season.

“We are very proud to have been able to partner with Beam Suntory for the past ten years to serve America’s military families and deliver our highly regarded Holiday Meals for Military program,” said Brig. Gen. (ret.) John I. Pray Jr., President and CEO of Operation Homefront.  “Together we have made the holidays brighter for over 90,000 military families and helped them have the opportunity to thrive in the communities they have worked so hard to protect.”

Over the years, Beam Suntory employees have volunteered thousands of hours to support military families in need. Operation Homefront will serve a holiday meal to its 400,000th military family member in December.

KNOCK THEIR SOCKS OFF WITH MEMBERSHIP TO THE WORLD’S LEADING WHISKY CLUB

Slippers, socks and cardigans just won’t cut it. Sending a loved one on an endless journey of discovery with 26,000 fellow whisky fans will.

SMWS_Christmas_Web_003521_zpsbi4lt2s1

Unforgettable whisky moments are shared ones, which is why membership to The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) is a Christmas gift any whisky fan – whether newly interested or hardcore adventurer – will be overjoyed to receive.

Only members of the SMWS can access its constant supply of one-off single cask, single malt whiskies, drawn straight from the barrel and bottled at natural strength (undiluted) – whisky flavours at their most wide-ranging and intriguing.

Annual membership and renewal is £65, but the SMWS offers a range of options for new members up to and including its Pioneer Welcome Pack at £130. It’s the perfect Christmas gift, coming with a beautiful presentation box containing three 10cl sample bottles of Society whisky to get started, a £15 e-voucher, entertaining SMWS journal and a club lapel badge to start wearing with pride.

Being a member of SMWS not only offers members access to the SMWS’s revered single cask whiskies, exclusive tasting events, venues and unparalleled expertise; it means they belong to a Society with like-minded individuals from all around the world.

Meeting 26,000 fellow whisky fans is just the beginning of a journey of endless discovery that comes with joining the world’s most colourful whisky club.

Warm welcome

The SMWS is always welcoming, treating members new and old with the same warmth and respect as you would good friends. At member-only events you can discover intriguing malts with fellow whisky admirers. The SMWS is firmly of the belief that its unique malts are best appreciated when shared with friends.

One-off drams

Every individual cask of whisky matures in its own way, and if the name on the Society’s label seems unusual, it’s because the whisky is too. The SMWS bottles from a single cask when its Tasting Panel decides the whisky is ready, and each cask provides a finite number of bottles for members to buy.

Once they’re sold-out, they are gone forever, flavours never to be repeated. If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind malt experience, the SMWS is the right place for you.

Venues and partner bars

In the UK, the SMWS has its spiritual home at The Vaults in Leith, Edinburgh as well as Members’ Rooms at 28 Queen Street in the city centre. In London, the SMWS has a members-only venue at 19 Greville Street and recently opened a new pop-up at 78 Northcote Road, Clapham, where guests can experience a range of single cask whiskies and other spirits as well as a selection of fantastic food.

SMWS partner bars are every bit as extraordinary as the Society’s malts. With nearly 100 worldwide locations, they’re the perfect place to share a dram of one-off single malt Scotch whisky.

Membership benefits

The core annual membership of the Society costs £65 and provides whisky lovers with benefits including discounted dram prices at SMWS partner bars; free subscription to Unfiltered, its award-winning members’ magazine; and savings on postage and packaging of bottles.

BUFFALO TRACE DISTILLERY RELEASES 1993 VINTAGE O.F.C. BOURBON WHISKEY – American Whiskey News

OFC_1993_Bottle_Canister_HiRes

BUFFALO TRACE DISTILLERY RELEASES 1993 VINTAGE O.F.C. BOURBON WHISKEY

FRANKFORT, Franklin County, Ky (Nov 20, 2018) – The year was 1993, and while “The X Files” debuted on national television and “Jurassic Park” broke box office records, Buffalo Trace Distillery quietly distilled and then laid away some of its bourbon to slumber, undisturbed, for 25 years, to be exact.

Now that bourbon has been bottled, and the result is the next offering of the O.F.C. Vintage Bourbon, set to release in December.   Although limited, there are more bottles available of this 1993 vintage than the previous O.F.C. Vintage dated releases from 1985, 1989, and 1990.

Like its predecessors, the 1993 Vintage will arrive in a wooden display box containing a provenance card.  Inside the wooden box lies a crystal bottle with real copper lettering in-laid in the bottle with a hand applied paper label. The label on the back of the bottle notes the milestones for the year 1993. The provenance card contains the same information found on the back label.

The O. F. C. vintage-dated bourbons has a name derived from this National Historic Landmark’s original moniker – the O.F.C. Distillery – renowned for producing top class whiskey during its tenure.

Tasting notes for this 25-year-old bourbon describe it as having a nose of dark cherry, honey, and smoked oak.  On the palate, notes of caramel, toasted vanilla, and cocoa are found.  For the finish, coffee, maple syrup and oak linger.

“It’s hard to believe that the same year this bourbon was made, in 1993, the world wide web was just becoming a ‘thing,’ and introduced to the public domain,” said  Harlen Wheatley, master distiller.  “Now when you think of how far everything has come, from a technology standpoint to bourbon’s popularity again, it’s mind blowing.  What’s really amazing is how solid this bourbon is, and how the taste and integrity have held up. It’s a real tribute to Elmer and Gary Gayheart and the rest of the team at the Distillery for this vintage to have this consistency and taste this good after aging for 25 years.”

This 1993 Vintage is actually the third release of the O.F.C. Vintage whiskey, but the second offered for sale. In the fall of 2016 Buffalo Trace Distillery released three vintage-dated bourbons, exclusively to non-profit organizations at no charge to raise money for their causes. Those bottles, from 1980, 1982, and 1983 were auctioned at charity last spring, and raised nearly $1.2 million for a variety of causes such as cancer services, cystic fibrosis, leukemia and lymphoma, children’s rights, autism, military veterans, animal protection, arts foundations, and many more.

Suggested retail pricing for this collectable and very limited 1993 O.F.C. Vintage Bourbon is $2,500.  More information about the O.F.C. line can be found at https://ofcvintages.com.
