Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 221: Oban 21 Year Old 1996 Diageo Special Release 2018

Mark Dermul, Belgian whiskyblogger, tries one of Diageo’s Special Releases 2018. Someone whispered into his ear that the Oban 21 ‘does not deliver’. That’s a pity. But allow him to try it for himself. Lo and behold: it is a sniper. It starts somewhat closed, almost sneaky, but given enough time, this one is actually a grand malt!

JACK DANIEL’S LAUNCHES LIMITED-EDITION TENNESSEE TASTERS’ SELECTION – American Whiskey News

JACK DANIEL’S LAUNCHES LIMITED-EDITION TENNESSEE TASTERS’ SELECTION

New experimental whiskeys will be available at the Jack Daniel Distillery and select stores across Tennessee

LYNCHBURG, Tenn. (Oct. 18, 2018) – With more than 150 years of whiskey-making craftsmanship, the Jack Daniel Distillery is launching its Tennessee Tasters’ Selection – a line of limited-release, experimental whiskeys, each carefully chosen by Jack Daniel’s Master Tasters to deliver unique and diverse experiences.

The line will be sold exclusively at the Jack Daniel Distillery and select stores throughout Tennessee. Each release is expected to be approximately 24,000 bottles followed with another limited release every few months.

“This collection exemplifies our whiskey-making in a new way in that each whiskey will undergo its own process for unique flavors chosen by our esteemed Master Tasters,” said Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller Jeff Arnett. “We plan on releasing several of these new products each year as we continue to tap the expertise of the Master Tasters who make our Tennessee Whiskey every day.”

The first three whiskeys released in the series are:

  • High Angel’s Share Barrels – whiskey barreled in January 2013 which offered an unusually low yield, presenting a unique and deep concentration of flavors with a dark color at 107-proof. Selected by Assistant Master Distiller and Master Taster Chris Fletcher. Available early-October.
  • Smoked Hickory Finish – a fully matured whiskey finished with charred hickory staves for a smoky flavor at 100-proof, just in time for the 30th annual Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational BBQ which is held in Lynchburg on Oct. 27. Selected by Master Taster Marsha Hale and available late-October.
  • Reunion Barrel – a 90-proof whiskey finished in wine barrels. These barrels were first used to age Jack Daniel’s, then used for a Tennessee-produced wine, and returned to the Jack Daniel Distillery to finish this specific release. Selected by Master Distiller and Master Taster Jeff Arnett. Available early 2019.

“With this launch, we’re continuing to live by Mr. Jack’s motto that ‘Every day we make it, we’ll make it the best we can’,” continued Arnett. “This time, we’re taking the ‘we’ in that statement to the next level. Jack Daniel’s Master Tasters are an integral part of the quality whiskey we produce every day, and now we’re enabling them to share their expertise with the world by sharing some of their personal favorite, previously unreleased expressions.”

While each whiskey offers a unique taste, color and proof, they will all be sold in 375-ml bottles at a price of $39.99 and available in limited quantity at the Jack Daniel Distillery and select stores across Tennessee. The bottles reflect sample bottles used daily by Jack Daniel’s Master Tasters and will include a customized label, distillery name embossment on the front, and “Taster Sampler Bottle” mark on the back of the glass structure.

The Whisky Shop Exclusive

This limited edition single barrel bourbon from Maker’s Mark is one of the first of its kind and an exclusive to The Whisky Shop. Taking inspiration from the process used to create Maker’s 46, this Kentucky bourbon is crafted from a barrel made from a bespoke selection of different wooden staves, chosen by a team from The Whisky Shop.

The final stave selection used five French oak staves cooked at high temperature in a convection oven, three French oak staves seared in an infra-red oven, and two more of the same but with ridges cut into the surface.

The nose is cooling, with oak shavings and spearmint emerging with toffee and linseed oil. The palate is sweet and dry, with oak wood lingering on into the spicy finish.

BENROMACH DISTILLERY ADDS WOOD FINISH TO CONTRAST RANGE – Scotch Whisky News

Wood Chateau Cissac Bordeaux 2010 bottle & box

BENROMACH DISTILLERY ADDS WOOD FINISH TO CONTRAST RANGE

Single malt finished in Château Cissac casks

The Benromach Distillery Company Ltd. has unveiled the latest addition to its Wood Finish portfolio with the launch of the limited-edition Benromach Château Cissac Bordeaux Wood Finish 2010.

The single malt Scotch whisky balances Benromach’s signature Speyside smokiness with rich red wine undertones.

Benromach Château Cissac Bordeaux Wood Finish 2010 is matured in First Fill Bourbon barrels in the distillery’s traditional dunnage warehouses in Forres, Speyside. This expression is then finished for just over two years in Château Cissac wine casks, hand-selected from the illustrious French wine region of Haut-Médoc near Bordeaux.

Dark gold in colour, the influence of the wine casks is immediately apparent on the nose. On tasting, the initial pepper is followed by sweet vanilla, creamy milk chocolates, hints of red wine tannins and peat smoke. Deeper hints of bonre embers are complemented by Brazil nuts and gorgeous cocoa flavours.

Keith Cruickshank, Benromach Distillery manager, said: “Our latest Wood Finish is a welcome addition to our ‘Contrasts’ range of single malt Scotch whiskies.

“All our Wood Finishes, including our Château Cissac Bordeaux Wood Finish 2009 which we launched last year, have been really well received by whisky lovers around the world.

“I’m confident that Benromach Château Cissac Bordeaux Wood Finish 2010, with its unique and appealing characteristics, will be appreciated by new and existing Benromach enthusiasts. At our distillery in Forres, we’ve always been unafraid to innovate, and we hope those who enjoy our flagship Benromach 10 Years Old will enjoy exploring our different finishes.”

A limited release of 7,789 bottles will be made available for sale through specialist whisky retailers with a recommended retail price of £47.75 in the UK. Prices may vary in international markets because of duty and import taxes.

For more information on Benromach please visit www.benromach.com.

Notes

Tasting notes

Pour a good dram into a glass, noticing the dark gold colour, swirl it around and take some little sniffs to enjoy the aroma without water. The fabulous influence of the Château Cissac casks will be immediately apparent, with melon notes, red apples, delicate and zesty orange peel and dark chocolate. There’s also an underlying floral note and a delightful charred oak edge; the Benromach signature.

Now take a sip and enjoy the taste without water. It’s slightly peppery on the palate with sweet vanilla, creamy milk chocolate and there’s even refreshing lemon and limeade flavours with a nod and a wink towards the effervescent. Satisfying hints of red wine tannins emerge, complementing a lingering peat smoke.

Now add some water, swirl it around and savour the aroma with water. There are hints of pressed green apple and pear… and delicate oak aromas develop, complemented by the lingering peppermint.

Take a good sip and roll it around your mouth enjoying the taste with water. At first, you’ll sense some spiciness and cracked black pepper. A slight bitterness develops, with grapefruit and orange peel. Now you may detect deeper hints of bonfire embers, complemented by Brazil nuts and gorgeous cocoa flavours.

Benromach Distillery

Originally built in 1898, Benromach Distillery was brought back to life when the Urquhart family realised a lifelong dream to own a distillery and purchased it in 1993. The distillery was extensively re-equipped over a five-year period before it was officially opened by His Royal Highness The Duke of Rothesay in 1998.

In reopening Benromach Distillery, the Urquhart family wanted to create a single malt whisky that has a classic Speyside character: beautifully balanced with a light touch of smoke.

Benromach Distillery is located on the outskirts of the ancient market town of Forres. A five-star visitor centre is open to the public throughout the year for tours and tastings. Benromach Distillery is a member of the world-famous Malt Whisky Trail.

Springbank Quarterly – November Newsletter – Scotch Whisky News

Springbank Society

Springbank Quarterly- November Newsletter

For the members of our Springbank Society,

Summer is certainly behind us now as autumn has heralded its arrival with a combination of a chilly breeze and series of storms over the past few weeks. Consequences have included the relatively trivial (Springbank Towers are absolutely freezing) to the more serious (the high rainfall has caused a landslide on the A83, closing the road and leading to a diversion of 58 miles).  It could be a long, cold winter… guess we will have to enjoy a few drams to warm ourselves up.

In this Quarterly Newsletter we shall discuss some Distillery news, bring you exciting new bottling announcements and update you on our Sales Team’s upcoming trips and events.

And for UK based Society members, we are going to point you in the direction of a recent TV programme focusing on Kintyre – information on that can be found towards the end of this email.

Distillery News

The production year started afresh in August and it’s full steam ahead here in Campbeltown.  This year production will increase to 400,000 litres between both Springbank and Mitchell’s Glengyle distilleries. Five years ago, annual production was 125,000 litres in total so output has increased significantly over this period. Kilkerran will be produced at Glengyle distillery for 3 months this year, so the future is looking very exciting for our sister distillery. The malt barns are back in operation too and the distillery staff have been malting local barley for the last few weeks.

The distillery shop is beginning to look like it has always been there. The new warehouse being built between Springbank and Glengyle now has foundations and a cement floor in place. This is a long term project and we will provide updates to members as the construction continues. This monster racked warehouse will be a sibling to the other 2 racked warehouses we have, warehouses 6 and 15. We’re looking to forward to learning the number of this warehouse, safe in the knowledge that it can’t be any more confusing than the current situation where there are 8 warehouses in total but the numbered warehouses go up to 15.

Since we are discussing Distillery news, now seems like a good time to announce the release of 2 upcoming bottlings; 1 from Springbank and 1 from Glengyle.

Springbank 9 YO Local Barley 57.7%

The much anticipated 4th annual release of Local Barley from Springbank Distillery. A 9yo whisky at 57.7%, this offering is the penultimate release in our series of 5 annual Local Barley bottlings.

Kilkerran 8 YO Cask Strength 56.5%

Also coming soon: the newest edition of Kilkerran 8yo cask strength. This 56.5% abv release comes from our sister distillery, Mitchell’s Glengyle, the home of Kilkerran Single Malt.

You will all receive a Newsflash email to announce the launch date very soon to give you a chance to get your hands on a bottle or two. Also included in this Newsflash email will be a request for you all to not post any product details on social media as this counteracts the effect of members getting to know about launches in advance. Thank you for your cooperation.

The Next Society Bottle

Although the next Society exclusive release is not scheduled for release until February/March of 2019, we thought we would let you all know about the changes we will be implementing then. We have been aware that our existing methods of ordering and paying for bottles has become antiquated, slow and, due to the Society’s increasing membership, difficult to manage on our end so we have decided to make a change.

If you are a member of the Cadenhead Club run by our friends at Wm Cadenhead’s you will know that they recently entered the 21st century by allowing members to pay online for Club bottles and we are delighted to say we are following in their footsteps – thanks to feedback from members we have decided to adopt an online ordering and payment system in the interest of fairness and practicality. Long time members will be aware that occasionally we have to make changes to the way the Society is run due to its growing size and this is one of those situations.

Further details will be released nearer the time.
