This is a specially selected exclusive release to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of The Whisky Barrel. 150 numbered bottles. This golden whisky has a complex nose with notes of milk choclate, forest berries and green moss. The palate is smooth and creamy with toffee, blackcurrants and spice. The finish is long, with a distinctive pepperiness. John Bald established Carsebridge Malt Distillery in 1798 on the edge of Alloa. By the 1820s it was producing both malt and grain whiskey but during the 1850s was converted to a grain distillery following installation of a Coffey continuous still. Two Coffey still were operational by 1886 and a third was installed around 1966. By the mid 1960s this was one of the largest working distilleries in Scotland. Carsebridge closed in 1983 and most of its buildings were demolished in 1992 and thereby is a lost Lowland grain distillery.

ONE OF THE WORLD’S GREATEST WHISKIES SETS NEW RECORD AT AUCTION – Scotch Whisky News

Bowmore Bouquet 2

ONE OF THE WORLD’S GREATEST WHISKIES SETS NEW RECORD AT AUCTION

One of the world’s most coveted and highly regarded whiskies, the Bowmore 1966 Samaroli Bouquet has been bought for a record-breaking £51,611 in an online auction held by Perth based Whisky Auctioneer (www.whiskyauctioneer.com).

After receiving over 50 bids from across the globe, the winning bid came from Hong Kong and sets a new world record for this legendary bottle. It exceeds the previous mark of £4,200, which it achieved in 2014, according to research from rare whisky analysts Rare Whisky 101, marking over a 280% annual increase.

Regarded by many as one of the best, if not the best, whiskies ever bottled, the Bowmore 1966 Samaroli Bouquet is the creation of two whisky legends – Islay’s Bowmore distillery and celebrated Italian bottler, the late Silvano Samaroli. First bottled in 1984 with only 720 bottles produced, the whisky is currently ranked in the top spot on Whiskybase.com’s top 1000 whiskies of all time, just ahead of Samaroli’s renowned Laphroaig 1967.

The bottle was one of over 3,880 bottles being auctioned off by Whisky Auctioneer this past month, securing a total of more than £1.2million. Other notable sales include the:

  • Bowmore 1964 Black Bowmore 42 Year Old – £22,222
  • Macallan 1946 52 Year Old – £14,500

The Macallan and the Black Bowmore joined the Bouquet in breaking records.  According to Rare Whisky 101, the Black Bowmore most recently sold for £20,000, and the Macallan 1946 for £13,200 in June 2018.

Sean McGlone, director at Whisky Auctioneer, said: “It’s widely known that the Bowmore 1966 Samaroli Bouquet has legendary status within the whisky industry. We knew that there would be strong interest in its listing and that it would likely break the previous records, but it has exceeded all our expectations by fetching over £50,000. It goes to show how committed people are to collecting and investing in rare vintage whisky, something we are seeing a huge increase in.

“At Whisky Auctioneer, we strive to attract some of the very best collections that can be sold worldwide. At least three world records were broken in this recent auction and that helps to reinforce our reputation as an esteemed whisky auctioneer for both buyers and sellers globally. As interest in the sector continues to grow, we are committed to our service to make it as easy as possible for whisky collectors to trade.”

Andy Simpson, co-founder of Rare Whisky 101, said: “With more buyers than ever in the market for the best whiskies, the value of highly regarded single malts is increasing at a rapid rate, with prices being dictated by this consumer demand. Investors, collectors and connoisseurs are becoming increasingly aware of whisky’s rapidly growing popularity around the world, particularly for the rarest and most coveted single malts. The Bowmore 1966 Samaroli Bouquet, which is held in such high regard by connoisseurs, is particularly rare and collectible. This certainly contributed to the interest it drew and the wide range of bids that came in during the sale.”

The incredible new records achieved at this auction are testament to the growing interest in rare whisky, with Whisky Auctioneer noting a 36% rise in the number of online auction users in the last year alone.

Thanks to the ease of access and variety of exciting auctions available, online auctioneers can see records broken by offering a wide catalogue of exclusive whiskies to a global audience. Simplifying the process of buying and selling whisky internationally, Whisky Auctioneer continues to reach a global audience of more than fifty countries, illustrating the growing worldwide appeal of rare whisky.

The Macallan Unveils Immersive Distillery Experience

The Distillery Experience

In June 2018, The Macallan unveiled its iconic and unprecedented new distillery and visitor experience, after 6 years and $186 million in the making. Solidifying its position as the luxury single malt, the brand also needed to spread mass awareness about its opening to drive interest and traffic to this whisky mecca as a true destination.

To do this, The Macallan created a global campaign bringing the new distillery experience to consumers and stakeholders around the world through an array of engaging experiences and custom content. From the doors of the new distillery and inside the stunning new visitor experience, an interactive virtual experience will allow consumers anywhere in the world – at an event, on their mobile phones, on our social media pages, or in a retail store – to explore the new distillery as if they were really there, and choose their own path to learn more about the history and heritage of The Macallan and its unrivaled whisky making process. From Hong Kong to Mexico City to NYC and beyond, the installations and VR technology will bring the distillery to the world.

Here in the US, an event series highlighting the brand’s foundations and future will take place for one week in July – with a private media & influencer event in NYC followed by a consumer-facing activation at Grand Central Station.

In addition to whisky tastings, also featuring the brand new Edition No. 4 expression, and brand education moments, the events will feature an immersive “Cube” installation that brings the new distillery to life within a large, interactive booth structure. The 15x15x15 “Cube” offers an unprecedented opportunity to experience the distillery like never before. An in-person guide will take guests through a 4D multi-sensorial, immersive experience features 360 degree panoramic content of the new distillery projected on large scale walls of the booth.

Grand Central Activation

To celebrate the launch of The Macallan’s new distillery and bring a taste of Speyside to New York, we will transform Vanderbilt Hall into an immersive and sensational experience where guests will be transported to the distillery. Our interactive cube will take guests on a virtual journey through the distillery and Easter Elchies Estate to learn about the distillery building architecture, our collectable expressions and untold stories from our estate. As part of the experience, guests will enjoy samples of The Macallan with bites of Scottish fare.

The Macallan’s new distillery activation will take place at the following dates and times:

  • Date(s): Wednesday, July 25, Thursday, July 26 and Friday, July 27 (half day only) – Friday, July 27 is National Scotch Day
  • Time: 11:30 AM to 7:30 PM (12:00 PM to 3:30 PM on Friday)

Inver House Distillers reports steady sales as focus continues on global brand growth – Scotch Whisky News

Martin Leonard appointed as Director of Inver House Distillers.

Inver House Distillers reports steady sales as focus continues on global brand growth

Inver House Distillers Ltd, the Scotch whisky subsidiary of global drinks business International Beverage Holdings Ltd, has reported steady sales for the year to September 2017 and an ongoing focus on the future of its brands.

The results reflect the Airdrie-based Company’s continued investment in stock for future sales (up 3% from last year) and support for the global growth of its award-winning premium spirits portfolio – with a solid performance in core markets for single malt Scotch whisky brands Old Pulteney, Speyburn, anCnoc and Balblair, plus the premium blended Scotch Hankey Bannister.

A long term investment plan behind the Company’s super premium Scottish gin Caorunn delivered a particularly strong performance in the results, with sales value growing by 34% in 2017 (47% growth in the UK market and 46% in the vital travel retail channel).

The Company also continues to invest in its distilleries, most notably a £3 million green initiative at Balmenach Distillery, the home of Caorunn Gin, to install a new anaerobic digestion system to significantly reduce the site’s carbon footprint.

The financial results in summary:

  • Turnover at £62.7 million, was at a similar level to the prior period.
  • Gross profit margins were slightly down on the prior period at 36.6%, core brands making up a larger % of the sales.
  • Other operating expenses increased as more monies were invested behind promoting the brands.
  • Operating Profit at 12.2% reflects investment behind brands reducing profits in current year.
  • Profit before tax at 11.5% down on the prior year percentage of 14.1%.
  • Caorunn Gin sales continue to grow at double digit level.
  • Continued investment in stocks for future brand growth – up 3% to £118m.

Martin Leonard, Inver House Distillers’ Managing Director commented:

‘These results are as we expected and show that the business is in a strong position and delivering on our long term strategy to build on our highly successful brands in global markets. We are also committed to investment programmes at our distilleries, to ensure they are in good shape to deliver increased demand for stock in the future, where possible using the latest green technology and processes to protect the environment surrounding each site.

‘In terms of our brands, Caorunn is a very good example of our strategy in action. A 47% growth figure in the UK market demonstrates how our production, sales and marketing skills and long term approach can build a brand to become one of the UK’s best sellers in what is an extremely competitive sector. We are investing heavily in supporting our brand portfolio to compete in the global market, with a recent relaunch for Speyburn in the UK and US, and further brand projects planned in the near future. Our spirits also continue to be recognised with ‘best in class’ medals at some of the world’s top drinks industry competitions, and they continue to grow despite difficult trading conditions and general uncertainty in the marketplace’.

About International Beverage Holdings

International Beverage Holdings Limited is one of the industry’s most dynamic global drinks businesses. Established in 2006 as the international arm of ThaiBev, it specialises in developing distinctive, premium local brands for global growth, with a portfolio that is led by a range of high quality Scotch whiskies and includes some of the fastest growing and most prestigious beers, spirits and whiskies on the market today. These high quality brands are enjoyed by consumers in over 85 global markets and include Chang Beer, Mekhong, Old Pulteney Single Malt Scotch Whisky, Hankey Bannister blended whisky and Caorunn Gin.

Focus brands

Old Pulteney is one of the world’s finest and most distinctive single malt Scotch whiskies. Known as ‘The Maritime Malt’, it is crafted in the windswept coastal town of Wick, home to the Pulteney Distillery which is one of the most northerly on the Scottish mainland. The distillery was established in 1826 in the heart of ‘Pulteneytown’, the town created to house fishermen during Wick’s famous herring boom which once drew a fleet of over 1000 boats and 7000 workers to this remote and rugged harbour. Old Pulteney is the embodiment of this place, its people and its remarkable history. The skilled Pulteney Distillery team continues to craft whisky using the most traditional and time-honoured techniques that most others have long abandoned. This includes the uniquely shaped Pulteney stills, which are reflected in the design of the Old Pulteney bottle on shelves today.

Speyburn is home to a multitude of award-winning and single malt Scotch whiskies; the result of an outstanding natural environment and an insistence on using a combination of the most traditional methods of production with innovative approaches. Established in 1897, by John Hopkins, Speyburn currently has three core expressions – Bradan Orach, Speyburn 10 Years Old and the newly released Speyburn 15 Years Old. Speyburn has been awarded for its quality products and ambition, winning Distillery of the Year 2017 at the New York International Spirits Competition (NYISC), as well as a host of gold medals from some of the world’s most prestigious wines and spirits competitions.

Balblair distillery is one of the oldest working distilleries in the Scottish Highlands. Established in 1790, the distillery building and its warehouses sit on the original site to this day. Balblair whiskies are released as vintage expressions, only when they have reached their exact point of ‘optimum maturation’, the peak of perfection.

anCnoc is produced at Knockdhu Distillery – established in 1894 and one of the smallest and most enchanting in the Scottish Highlands. It is renowned the world over by malt enthusiasts for bringing a contemporary twist to the traditions of fine malt whisky, producing a single malt that is accessible and versatile for all occasions. anCnoc Cutter has been ranked in the Liquid Gold category of Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2016 with a score of 96.5 adding to anCnoc’s portfolio of award-winning expressions. Whiskies in this category are deemed by Jim Murray as “superstar whiskies that give us all a reason to live.” The anCnoc 18 year old was also awarded the title of Best Highland Single Malt in the 13-20 year old category at the World Whisky Awards 2016.

Caorunn is a super-premium, small batch distilled gin from the Scottish Highlands, launched by International Beverage Holdings in 2009. With its roots in Celtic culture and heritage, Caorunn is a slow paced, small batch distilled gin made in a unique copper berry chamber at the Balmenach Distillery in Speyside. Five unique Celtic botanicals give Caorunn a subtlety and complexity that make it more than just a gin. This extra dimension means it can be mixed and enjoyed in a whole host of exciting ways, from classic and contemporary cocktails to the simplicity of our perfect-serve G&T with fresh red apple.

Auchentoshan Three Wood Single Malt at K&L California – Scotch Whisky News

KL 3wood

Auchentoshan Three Wood Single Malt Whisky (750ml) ($56.99)

94 points Wine Enthusiast: “The name of this whisky is a nod to how its matured in three different casks: American Bourbon, Spanish oloroso and Pedro Ximénez Sherry. Its robust, with a deep amber hue and rich caramel scent. The flavor profile shows toffee, campfire smoke and a mouthwatering butterscotch note on the exhale. It almost reads like a peated Bourbon. (KN)” (12/2015)

K&L Notes: A favorite of the employees at Auchentoshan and many at K&L, the Three Wood is deep amber in color, nutty, rich and aromatic on the nose. It’s extremely full on the palate, sweet sherry flavors complement the high tones and fruity nature of the spirit. The finish is long and warm. Aged in Bourbon, Oloroso Sherry, and Pedro Ximenez casks the Three Wood is the perfect combination.

Jeffrey Jones | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 30, 2018

This is a wonderful single malt for those looking for an easy drinker. The the nose is light and pretty with a hint of bees wax. In the mouth it is light and delicate with the sherry aging adding juicy notes. What makes this single so nice is that all of the flavor aspects are balanced and harmonious. There is a delicious finish.

Andrew Whiteley | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 25, 2018

Filled in 3 different barrel types, this dram showcases American Bourbon casks, Spanish Olorosso butts, and unctuous Pedro Ximenez casks. This cask regimen does several things. The bourbon highlights the inherent fruity, vanilla cake, and creme brulee character of the spirit. The Olorosso adds gobs of cocoa, nuttiness, and toffee. And of course, the PX dials up a beautiful sweetness, intensity, and raisined fruits. While this triple casks regime adds layers of complexity, body, and richness, it also belies the notion that Lowland whisky is light and simple. At just $56.99 this is a shameless sherry dram for every day enjoyment. While the lowlands does have some highly coveted bottles, it’s this kind of easy enjoy-ability that makes it such a special place for whisky.

Will Blakely | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 22, 2018

The Three Wood beautifully showcases the movement away from age statements and toward creative cask finishes. On the nose, it immediately offers enticing aromas of dried fruit, orange peel, caramelized sugar and ample spice. On the palate, it tastes full and complex despite its three distillations. Vanilla and dry sherry dominate at first but give way to soft tones of toffee and raisins. Typical of lowland malts, the finish brings a lingering nutty sweetness, but with a hint of charred wood. Altogether, it makes for an endlessly enjoyable dram that satisfies most any palate. I highly recommend this bottle for fans of bourbon or Irish whisky trying to break into Scottish single malts. It’s also a great pick for scotch drinkers looking for something new in a sherry-focused style.
