2008 Bruichladdich Bere Barley Single Malt Whisky at K&L California – Scotch Whisky News

KL1

A Bere Market

The market went from bull to bear recently, but don’t let that get you down. The new 2008 vintage of Bere Barley from Bruichladdich should help erase all your fears and ease any of your long-term doubts. Bottled in 2017, this nine year old edition is bottled at 100 proof and is made from the old “viking” grain, now grown for Bruichladdich on Islay at the nearby Dunlossit farm. I dug out my original email from Jim McEwan, back when they originally unveiled the Bere Barley project some time ago, made from an ancient strain supposedly brought by Norse invaders when they occupied the Hebrides during the 9th century. Here’s what Jim told me back then:

The Bere is so young and pure, no make-up just as nature intended. Its history, honesty, and the harmony of guys working on a dream which the consumer can experience and wonder just how the seed survived since the 9th century, brought by the Vikings to Scotland. What a living timeline!!!!! It’s incredible and once again it’s Bruichladdich that recognised this is a national treasure and cannot be compared. A miracle in a bottle from a seed that was planted over 1000 years ago.

As you might imagine, Bruichladdich doesn’t want a lot of oak or sherry getting in the way of their superstar barley, so the 2008 edition is light on its feet. The nose is wonderful, full of sweet grains, lush vanilla, and lots of oak spice. The palate is more of the same with notes of ginger and sweet bready notes on the finish. I think growing and milling the Bere strain has been the hardest part of the process for Bruichladdich. They’ve been doing this since 2006 and they’ve only managed five successful harvests over the last decade, meaning there’s not a lot of this whisky in barrel. The first time they tried to mill it, the toughness of the dense grist about broke all their equipment!

2008 Bruichladdich Bere Barley Single Malt Whisky (750ml) ($89.99)

This is probably more for serious Bruichladdich fanboys like myself than those of you looking for the next rare superstar. This isn’t a big, thick, heavy, or mouthcoating whisky. It’s all about the nuances of the grain and how it presents a different profile compared to the standard barley strain used in Scotland. This is one of the few concept projects that I think lives up to the story and I always look forward to another new release.

Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, releases another whisky in his MMM-series. For MMM – short for Mark & Manny’s Malts – Mark again had again had the pleasure of seeking out a special cask. They turned to lesser known Aultmore and found a bourbon cask from 2002 that hit all the right spots for them. It is the first release in their Antarctica Series, where the labels show fantastic photos of the cold continent taken by Belgian photographer Ilse Everaert. Enjoy!

Major Exhibition of Early Scottish Silver to Tour Scotland – Scotch Whisky News

Major Exhibition of Early Scottish Silver to Tour Scotland

Part of the ground-breaking research partnership between The Glenmorangie Company and National Museums Scotland

A major exhibition supported by The Glenmorangie Company and produced by National Museums Scotland will tour Scotland this year – as the two organisations celebrate the renewal of their award-winning archaeological research partnership.

The Glenmorangie Research Partnership was launched in 2008 and over three successive phases has revealed many new insights into the Early People of Scotland. The next phase of research will focus on the formation of the medieval kingdom of Scotland.

The Scotland’s Early Silver exhibition, currently on display at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, includes fascinating objects and shows for the first time how silver, not gold, became the most important precious metal in Scotland over the course of the first millennium AD. Thanks to the support of The Glenmorangie Company, the exhibition will now tour to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis, Banff in Aberdeenshire and Kirkcudbright in Dumfries and Galloway.

The new phase of the partnership, which is now entering its tenth year, will see the research focus move on from the first millennium AD to examine the archaeological evidence from the 9th to 12th centuries which underpins the formation of the nation state of Scotland. This will enable researchers to explore objects and evidence of the period, bringing new knowledge and research techniques to bear on a critical period in Scottish history.

The work will address important questions about how the kingdom of Scotland was created and its connections with the Anglo-Saxon world, Ireland and Scandinavia. The results of the research will be published in a new book and widely disseminated elsewhere. The announcement coincides with the appointment of a new holder of the post of Glenmorangie Research Fellow, working within the Museum’s Department of Scottish History and Archaeology. Dr Adrián Maldonado is a graduate in medieval history from Harvard University, with a PhD in medieval archaeology from the University of Glasgow.

Dr Gordon Rintoul, Director of National Museums Scotland, said: “We are very pleased to continue our innovative, successful and productive partnership with Glenmorangie. We look forward to another significant phase of archaeological research, discovery and public engagement, starting with the tour of Scotland’s Early Silver. The current exhibition and accompanying book are products of the scholarship already supported by The Glenmorangie Research Project.”

Hamish Torrie, Corporate Social Responsibility Director at The Glenmorangie Company, said: “We are very happy to continue our long-standing partnership with National Museums Scotland. The Glenmorangie Research Project, which began in 2008 will now run until 2020, making it one of the most enduring business and cultural partnerships. The success of the project in revealing new insights into the formation of Scotland as a nation will be further strengthened by this next stage. The tour of the very successful Scotland’s Early Silver exhibition will also bring a beautiful and compelling story to a much wider audience and as proud partners we are delighted to support the team at National Museums Scotland in this outreach.”

Alongside the exhibition tour and the new research, the partnership will see the introduction of the Glenmorangie Commission, in which contemporary craftspeople working in silver will be invited to submit designs taking inspiration from the collections from the period 9th to 12th century AD. The winning design will be commissioned for Scotland’s national collections and the final piece will go on display in the National Museum of Scotland’s Art and Design galleries.

Since 2008, the partnership between The Glenmorangie Company and National Museums Scotland has supported National Museums’ academic research and public engagement activities and funded an archaeological research post. The basis for this association is the eighth-century Hilton of Cadboll Stone, on display in the National Museum of Scotland’s Early People gallery. The Hilton of Cadboll stone was discovered on land now owned by The Glenmorangie Company near their Distillery in Ross-shire, and a design on the stone is the inspiration for the brand icon that adorns Glenmorangie’s range of single malt whiskies.

The exhibition, Scotland’s Early Silver, includes the recently unveiled Dairsie Hoard, which dates to the late 3rd century AD and is the earliest known example of hacksilver from anywhere beyond the Roman frontier.

Also on its first full public display is the Gaulcross hoard, discovered in Aberdeenshire in 2013. Since its excavation, research has revealed striking similarities with another find, from Norrie’s Law, in Fife. Both hoards have been re-dated to the 5th–6th centuries AD, several centuries earlier than previously thought, and show for the first time how earlier Roman silver was recycled and repurposed over the centuries.

By the early medieval period, silver was being made into new power symbols, including massive silver neck chains. These striking objects are unique to Scotland and show both the importance of silver and the amount that was available in parts of Scotland – the heaviest is made from almost 3kg of silver.

Scotland’s Early Silver Tour Dates:

National Museum of Scotland, Chambers Street, Edinburgh, until 25 February 2018

Museum nan Eilean, Lews Castle (Stornoway), 3 May – 23 June 2018

The Drinks Retailing Awards are recognised as a stamp of excellence in the Drinks industry, Michael Hanratty added “The competition for this award was very high and we were honoured to be mentioned and shortlisted alongside our category finalists, however to win this award is beyond our wildest imagination.”

The Newcomer of the Year award will now sit proudly next to Off License of the Year 2017 (Scottish Independent Retailing Awards) and a Young Business Commendation for Developing the Young Workforce (North Highland Business Awards 2017) in their Dornoch store. Since opening on June 28th 2016 the team at the Carnegie Whisky Cellars has quickly developed a reputation for excellence customer service and product knowledge. They will now go forward to the Scottish Rural Business Awards on March 22nd in Edinburgh with a great since of pride in being the first Scottish company to achieve this feat.

Michael Added “To open any business is a risk, but to open one where the towns population is under 2000 is a huge risk, I’m over the moon this risk has paid off. Our long term aim is to help develop a centre of excellence in the North Highlands for Scottish whisky and these awards can only add value to that.”

Glenmorangie “Spios” Private Edition Highland Single Malt at K&L California – Scotch Whisky News

Spios

Glenmorangie “Spios” Private Edition Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

The 9th release of the award winning “Private Edition” from Glenmorangie is a true labor of love for their Chief Whisky Creation officer, Dr Bill Lumsden. The good doctor explains that his obsession with rye whiskey (in particular the casks that had previously aged that rare American whiskey) began when famed Whisky & Beer writer Michael Jackson visited the distillery with a sample of the historical American whiskey. It was Bill’s first time diving into one of the America’s great spirits and at the time, sometime in the 90s, Rye whiskey was next to impossible to acquire. It took Dr. Bill a full decade to secure casks that had previously only held whiskey from Kentucky distilled with Rye as the big grain. Into he put the majestic and elegant Glenmo spirit an approximately another decade later released this special whisky. Spios, a Gaelic word meaning spiced, is as pointed with the rye casks as you might expect. Cinnamon, clove, hints of nutmeg and sweet creamy vanilla from the American oak work wonders around the fruity open Glenmo malt. For anyone who appreciates the excellent malts being released in this wonderful line of limited edition whiskies as well as single malt drinkers seeking new and exciting flavor profiles, this is a must buy.

Whisky Wednesday Reviews Glenmorangie Spios – Scotch Whisky News

phil

https://youtu.be/bVLzdnMUOIY

Hello everyone! I’m back! There’s only so long a chest infection can keep me down. This is, as far as I’m aware. the first and only single malt scotch to be matured solely in 100% ex-American Rye casks. As a result of doing this, the flavour profile gives you a combination of sweet vanilla, fudge and toffee that is all mixed in with some light earthy rye spices. Cardamon, cinnamon, rye and light slightly muddy flavours that run through the whisky. This whisky wasn’t designed to be either savory or sweet it’s a good combo of both, subtle and sweet with a good mix of everything, it’s just a good, solid and interesting solid single malt. Cheers!

SAZERAC’S OLD MONTREAL DISTILLERY NOW DISTILLING WHISKY – Canadian Whisky News

Still from ground 1

SAZERAC’S OLD MONTREAL DISTILLERY NOW DISTILLING WHISKY

MONTREAL (Feb. 14, 2018) History was made earlier this year when Canadian whisky was distilled in downtown Montreal for the first time in decades at the Sazerac Company’s Old Montreal Distillery. For more than a year Sazerac has been putting the elements in place, installing grain mills and a 4,000 gallon mash cooker, converting existing equipment and hooking up fermenters.  Recently a key piece, a brand new still, was added to the Distillery located in the downtown Montreal area, adjacent to the Port and Old Montreal. The still is 18 inches in diameter and 37 feet tall and was made at Vendome in Louisville, Ky.

The Old Montreal Distillery has long had the capacity to distill spirits, including Genever gin, but had always wanted to bring back whisky distillation to Montreal.  “With the long standing connection this city has had with distilling premium Canadian whisky, through the headquarters of the legendary Seagram Company and its patriarch Sam Bronfman, it was always a goal of ours to bring whisky distilling back to Montreal,” said Mark Brown, Sazerac Company president and chief executive officer.

Not only does the new still mean Canadian whisky will be made here, it will also allow experiments with new whiskies, something Sazerac is itching to do.  “With over 500,000 Canadian whisky barrels in inventory, we’re anxious to get started experimenting here in Montreal similar to what we do at our other distilleries,” said Drew Mayville, Sazerac’s master blender. The Montreal project holds a special place in Mayville’s heart, a native Canadian now living in Kentucky, who worked for Seagram’s for 22 years, serving as the fourth and last Master Blender under the Seagram dynasty.

Plans are still under wraps for now as to which Canadian whisky or whiskies will be made at the Old Montreal Distillery, and a formal christening of the still will be held later this year.  It is likely tours will be added later this year as well.

The Old Montreal Distillery dates back to 1929.  It currently employs more than 100 people. The addition of the new distilling operation adds a few more full time employees. Caribou Crossing, the world’s first single barrel Canadian whisky, is bottled at the Old Montreal Distillery, along with many other long time favorites.
