GLENMORANGIE’S NINTH PRIVATE EDITION INSPIRED BY AMERICAN RYE WHISKEY – Scotch Whisky News

GLENMORANGIE’S NINTH PRIVATE EDITION INSPIRED BY AMERICAN RYE WHISKEY

Glenmorangie’s first single malt whisky fully matured in American ex-rye whiskey casks is today revealed as the ninth release in the Highland Distillery’s acclaimed Private Edition series.

Glenmorangie Spìos, the Private Edition for 2018, exhibits a sophistication and subtle spice inspired by American rye whiskey. With its savoury and full-bodied character, Glenmorangie Spìos (Scots Gaelic for ‘spice’ and pronounced ‘spee-oss’) recalls the glittering heyday of American rye when production levels of rye whiskey were at an all-time high, it was hugely popular and considered highly desirable. Indeed, classic cocktails such as the Manhattan, Old Fashioned and Sazerac all used rye as their base alcohol when they were first created, over time, the spirit fell from favour and slipped into obscurity, where it would remain for years to come.

When travelling in the U.S. in the late 1990s, Glenmorangie’s Director of Distilling, Whisky Creation & Whisky Stocks, Dr Bill Lumsden, sought out some of the few remaining rye distilleries, intrigued by the whiskey’s history.  He found its characteristics of cinnamon and clove so captivating, that he decided to experiment with American ex-rye whiskey casks. Aware that a spirit of Glenmorangie’s renowned smoothness could invite rye’s subtleties to shine through in a way that many others would not, he was determined to one day bring a hint of American rye whiskey’s character to the Distillery’s renowned spirit.

To make Glenmorangie Spìos, Dr Bill sourced the finest first-fill casks from American whiskey’s heartland of Kentucky.  And long before the rye resurgence of today began, he arranged for these hand-selected oak casks to be shipped across the world, to the Glenmorangie Distillery.

Dr Bill comments: “I have always loved American rye whiskey’s spicy character, and I believed our smooth house style would perfectly complement the nuances of ex-rye casks. The result is Glenmorangie Spìos – a full-bodied, savoury single malt which brings to mind American rye whiskey’s golden age. Its fresh, herbal nose hints at cherry, clove and scents of green grass. The rye’s spice bursts on to the palate, as toffee, clove and cinnamon mingle with buttery vanilla, before a sweet and lingering finish – a single malt whisky which is unmistakeably Glenmorangie, yet exquisitely different.”

Bottled at 46% ABV, and non-chill filtered for extra body and texture, Glenmorangie Spìos will be available from www.Clos19.com and specialist whisky shops worldwide priced at £79 from 30th January.

NOTES:

Tasting Notes:

Colour: Straw gold

Taste: Spicy texture, lots of toffee, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, and sweet, buttery vanilla.

Finish: Rich, sweet and lingering, with more fudge, toffee, brazil nut and tangy citrus.

About Dr Bill Lumsden:

He recently added to his plaudits by winning the International Whisky Competition’s award for Master Distiller of the Year 2016 and 2017.  He was further honoured with the title of Master Distiller/Blender of the Year, at Whisky Magazine’s Icons of Whisky 2016 awards.

Campbeltown Malts Festival 2018 – Scotch Whisky News

Springbank Society

We are pleased to begin announcing details of the Campbeltown Malts Festival 2018.

Below you will find all relevant information regarding the events and tastings that are being provided during the festival by Springbank, Glengyle and Cadenhead’s. Also, throughout the weeks and months ahead, you will be provided with regular updates as we move closer to the festival and more information is available.

As you may already know, the festival will take place from Tuesday 22nd – Friday 25th May. Wednesday onwards being dedicated, as usual, to the celebration of the whiskies produced here in Campbeltown.

Last year proved to be our most successful Malts Festival ever and, since you shouldn’t try to fix something that isn’t broken, we’ll be following a very similar formula in 2018.

However, to reflect each of our companies’ significance, we feel it is important to emphasize that in 2018 the Cadenhead’s/Kilkerran event on the Friday is just as much fun as the Springbank one the day before.

With that in mind the Glengyle and Cadenhead celebrations on Friday 25th May are going to be bigger than ever. Not only is the Cadenhead Masterclass that is traditionally held on the Thursday moving to the Friday but also this year’s Kilkerran Festival Bottle will be exclusively available on Friday 25th May.

To emphasize, there won’t be a main Cadenhead’s or Kilkerran masterclass on the Thursday as both will now take place on the Friday. Similarly, there will be an exclusive bottling of Kilkerran only available on the Friday, not on the Thursday.

Before we move on to the main part of this email there is one more thing to tell you. We have decided to adopt a new way for you to order tickets for the tastings and masterclasses. We will be using a website called Eventbritehttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/

How to Order Tickets

Over the last few years it has become obvious to us that we cannot continue using the same old methods when it comes to the purchasing of tickets for the Campbeltown Malts Festival. The Festival has become so popular that many more people are attending it than ever before. This meant that we had to rethink things.

As mentioned above, we are going to be using Eventbrite and, when the time comes, that is where you will be able to buy tickets from.

Tickets will be available on Eventbrite from: Thursday 15th February at 2pm GMT (UK time).

You can register on Eventbrite now to save time entering your details when you order your tickets but you don’t have to should you not wish to. You will still be able to order tickets even if you do not register in advance, though it might save you time to do so. Details of the Festival will be displayed on Eventbrite prior to the ticket launch, including descriptions of each tasting – which can also be seen below.

It will be a maximum of 2 tickets per person for each tasting and, please note (and this is important!), that some tastings do overlap in time so it might not be possible to do all of them.

Tickets for the Cadenhead Club Members Tasting, The Springbank Society Tasting and the Distillery Dinner (on the evening of Wednesday 23rd) will not available on Eventbrite. How to acquire tickets for these events can be found later in this email. This also applies to any event that is only bookable on the day.

Once again we will be hosting an exclusive dinner at the distillery on the eve of our Open Day. This year, guests will be treated to dinner in the surroundings of our wonderful Malt Barns. This will take place on Wednesday 23rd May 2017 at 7pm.

On arrival to Springbank Distillery, you will be greeted with a champagne reception in our marquee which will also feature a range of locally sourced canapés.

Following this, you will sample a selection of whiskies, hand drawn from the cask by a member of our senior production team.

You will then be led to your table to enjoy a four course meal with a specially selected wine to accompany each course. To end your unique experience, each attendee will be presented with their own exclusive 70cl hand drawn bottle, chosen by public vote from the casks sampled earlier in the evening.

There will be a set menu so please advise us of any dietary requirements you have when booking. Also, please note that the meal will take place on the middle malt floor so guests will have to climb stairs to get to their table.

1995 Bowmore 22YO K&L Exclusive “Sovereign” Single Barrel Cask Strength – Scotch Whisky News

bowmoresss111111of1

1995 Bowmore 22 Year Old K&L Exclusive “Sovereign” Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1330633 $139.99

We’re going back to the Bowmore well again this winter, albeit with an older cask (22 years instead of 20) for an ever better price ($139 instead of $149)!! Aged in a refill hogshead cask and bottled at full proof with no chill-filtration, this is yet another must-have Islay malt for peat fans who like a bit of richness with their smoke. What stands out immediately about this 22 year old Bowmore is the creamy texture and the sweetness of the malt. The initial palate sensations are sweet vanilla and soft, supple oak, before the phenolics kick in and couple with the salty brine, emblematic of a whisky clearly aged by the sea. The finish brings forward notes of ash and campfire smoke, smoldering embers intermixing with what’s left of the sweet malt character. With supplies of rare Islay casks dwindling on the wholesale market currently, we’re thrilled with the pricing and we hope you are as well. This Bowmore 22 year is representative of everything our direct purchasing program strives to achieve.

The Whisky Barrel “New Whisky Blog Series – Indy Scotch Whisky – Scotch Whisky News

New Whisky Blog Series – Indy Scotch Whisky

Independent Scotch Whisky. The whisky industry’s worst kept, non secret. Big brands and distillery marketing dominate the whisky world. But one of the best and most interesting aspects of the Scotch Whisky industry, are the wonderful array of independent bottlers.

Here at The Whisky Barrel we are passionate in supporting the Indy Whisky scene. For more than 10 years we have been stocking and selling the wares of Scotland’s most renowned and established bottling companies, such as Gordon & MacPhail , Hunter Laing, Signatory VintageWemyss MaltsMorrison and MacKayCadenheads and more. Even more recently, we have started working with new lines such as North Star SpiritsCreative Whisky Co. Indy Scotch Whisky can offer a journey of discovery to enjoy a range of whisky characters or flavour profiles that offer something entirely different.  So, in this series of blogs we will take a closer look at gems that are Indy Scotch Whisky (#IndyScotchWhisky).

Independent Bottlings (IB) of whisky offers the enthusiast something far beyond the official distillery releases. Most notably, variety and a very keen price. With multiple new releases through the year, IB whiskies are often bottled from distilleries whose whisky rarely sees single malt status. They offer single casks, rare releases and experimental casks. But most of all they are some of Scotland’s finest scotch whisky.

The indy bottlers are free from the limitations and drive for absolute consistency of their core products that the distilleries need to adhere to. They give the customer access to a wider range of whiskies, styles and characters. And best of all, they tend to be excellent value. The warehouses of some of the indy bottlers are simply an Alladin’s Whisky Cave. Big hitters such MacallanHighland ParkSpringbank and Blair Athol. Lost Distilleries such as LittlemillImperialRosebank and Dumbarton. And unsung heroes such as CraigellachieClynelish and Ben Nevis.

But don’t be fooled by any misinformation that Indy Whisky is just bad casks cast aside by the distilleries. The wood policy of the likes of Morrison and MacKay is second to none. Gordon & MacPhail source new make spirit and nurture it themselves. Signatory Vintage run their operations alongside the fantastic Edradour Distillery. Each Indy bottler has its own exceptional pedigree in the whisky industry and serve only to release the best scotch whisky they can. We love them all.

Indy Scotch Whisky – Part 1.1 – Morrison & MacKay

This year we are taking a closer look at some of our Indy whisky bottlers. We’ll be starting with the wonderful Morrison & MacKay Ltd and their new venture with Aberargie Distillery. Keep an eye out next week for Parts 1.1 and 1.2 when we delve into the warehouses and distillery.

Wolfburn Whisky: Five Years Old January 25th! – Scotch Whisky News

Shane Fraser and Iain Kerr with Cask No.1_low_res

Wolfburn Whisky: Five Years Old January 25th!

Wolfburn Distillery is today celebrating its fifth anniversary – its first cask was filled on
25th January 2013.  Since that date the distillery has been in near constant production, and in the ensuring five years it has laid down almost 1.5 million bulk litres of spirit.

‘It continues to be an amazing adventure,’ says Shane Fraser, distillery manager. ‘For the first three years or so we only produced spirit and laid down casks. Then two years ago we installed our bottling plant and began selling whisky for the first time. The reaction has been unbelievable – our whisky is now distributed in 27 countries all around the world, it’s won multiple gold medal awards, and sales are miles higher than we anticipated. The five years since filling the first cask have simply flown past.’

Wolfburn’s Highland whisky has garnered an immediate reputation for excellence.  The distillery’s Northland expression is the only newly released single malt whisky to have won gold medals in four consecutive international competitions, and the successive Aurora and Morven expressions have attracted equally glowing reviews. Simultaneously, Wolfburn’s limited release whiskies have become the target of collectors globally, with a bottle of the inaugural release recently selling at auction in the US for over $1000.

‘At the end of the day, it’s lovely to be making a product that so many people enjoy,’ states Shane. ‘Not much in life is as good as a dram of fine single malt whisky, and I’m very, very proud of the whisky that Wolfburn is producing – it really is world class.’

ABOUT WOLFBURN:

The original Wolfburn Distillery was founded just to the west of Thurso by William Smith in 1821.  In its day it was one of the largest distilleries in Scotland, producing, according to HMRC records, 28,056 “gallons of proof spirit” in a single year.  Taking its name from the stream that provided the water – the Wolf Burn – the distillery operated until around 1870.  The reasons for its closure are lost in time, but by 1877 the newly produced Ordnance Survey maps showed it being in ruins.

In 2011 plans were laid to resurrect the old distillery. Construction began in 2012 and in January 2013 the new Wolfburn Distillery commenced production, thereby becoming the most northerly distillery on the Scottish mainland.  Situated 300m from the site of the original distillery, the new Wolfburn operates in much the same way as the old: craftsmen use traditional methods to produce fine spirit, which is laid down in best quality oak casks to await the day when it is bottled as single malt scotch whisky.  Wolfburn’s single malt scotch whiskies are now available in 27 countries globally.

WORLD’S LARGEST COLLECTION OF RARE CORTI WHISKY UP FOR AUCTION – Scotch Whisky News

CORTI

WORLD’S LARGEST COLLECTION OF RARE CORTI WHISKY UP FOR AUCTION

The world’s largest known selection of rare and collectable Corti Brothers whiskies will go under the hammer in an online auction currently being held by Perth based Whisky Auctioneer (www.whiskyauctioneer.com).

The selection of 26 bottles, 21 of which are unique, has been built up by a UK based whisky enthusiast. The bottles, which are being sold individually, are expected to sell for an estimated total of £50,000.

The Corti collection of whiskies, which are known as the ‘Duthie for Corti’ as they were bottled by Aberdeen based R.W. Duthie Co, were all selected and imported to the United States by The Corti Brothers for bottling, throughout the 1980s.

Often an overlooked name within the whisky industry, the Corti Brothers have played a significant role in the history of independently bottled Scotch whisky. The food and wine specialists took advantage of a downturn in the industry in the 1980s and secured a range of casks from some of the industry’s most iconic distilleries, including Clynelish, Jura and Macallan.

The collection of bottles for auction is the most comprehensive set of Corti Brothers bottlings ever assembled in one sale. Amongst the lots on offer are a bottle of Highland Park 1963, which is the only bottled example of Highland Park from this vintage.

Also available is a Jura 1966, Springbank 1958, Bowmore 1964 and arguably the most sought after of all, a very rare 1965 Clynelish (one of only a handful of whiskies to score 98 on www.whiskyfun.com). This particular vintage occupies a special place in the history of Scotch whisky, having been distilled at the old distillery, renamed first to Clynelish B when the new one was built, and then later to Brora – an iconic name within the secondary market.

The average price of each individual bottle is anticipated to be in the region of £2000.00

Sean McGlone, Directior at Whisky Auctioneer, said: “These bottlings represent an important turning point in the recent history of Scotch whisky and are one of the most highly prized series in terms of quality and variety. No one has ever sold such a large collection of Duthie for Corti bottles, so this is a one-off.  We are already seeing a great deal of interest in the collection from some of our regular customers across the world and we anticipate demand for the bottles to be high.”

The sale is a coup for Perthshire firm Whisky Auctioneer which specialises in auctioning fine, old, rare and collectable whisky. The auctioneer recently sold a rare 30 year old bottle of second edition Black Bowmore single malt whisky for a world record £11,900.

The auction is live and will close on Monday 5 February.

For more information on the auction or to register to participate please visit www.whiskyauctioneer.com
