Loch Lomond Whiskies Announced as Official Whisky at 2017 Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open

Premium Whisky brand joins Ladies Scottish Open history

Dundonald, 5 July, 2017 – The Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open is proud to announce Loch Lomond Whiskies, a premium highland scotch whisky crafted in the heart of Scotland, as the official whisky sponsor of the Championship at Dundonald Links from 27th – 30th July.

Founded in 1814, Loch Lomond whiskies has a history steeped in tradition with their selection of whiskies distilled and matured in the shadow of Scotland’s majestic Ben Lomond. With a penchant for innovation and quality, Loch Lomond Whiskies is the perfect fit for this year’s Championship with the world’s top female players including Lydia Ko, Ariya Jutanugarn, Charley Hull and Scotland’s Catriona Matthew, heading to Dundonald Links to compete in the ground-breaking tournament.

For the first time in Scottish Open history, this year’s Championship is co-sanctioned between the Ladies European Tour and the LPGA and will have the highest prize fund on the LET outside the Majors with the 156-strong player field contesting for US$1.5m. Another milestone for the Championship sees the Ladies compete at the same venue as the Men’s Scottish Open with Dundonald Links playing host to both events over a three-week period.

Speaking about the announcement, Scott Dickson, Loch Lomond Whiskies, said, “We’re delighted to be part of our third Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open and feature in the events’ history in this ground-breaking year.  At Loch Lomond Whiskies we pride ourselves on quality and believe that partnering with a world-class event will be a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase our brand to a knowledgeable audience with players and fans coming to watch from around the world.”

Loch Lomond Whiskies will be available to sample in the Championship village throughout the tournament days as well as being available to purchase over the weekend.

Taking place the week before the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Kingsbarns in 2017, the Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open will kick off a superb two weeks of links golf in Scotland. The back-to-back stretch of events echoes the successful strategy employed by the Men’s Scottish Open taking place the week before The Open – an approach proven to be a competitive advantage for those players competing in both Championships. The Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open is also a key element of Scotland’s commitments to the staging of The 2019 Solheim Cup at Gleneagles.

Watch the Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open LIVE on Sky Sports on Thursday/Friday from 14:00-17:00 and Saturday/Sunday from 15:00-18:00.

Old Potrero Single Malt 18th Century Style Whiskey at K&L California – American Whiskey News

The fascinating spirit represents Anchor Brewing Company’s attempt to re-create the original whiskey of America. This release was distilled in a small copper pot still at Anchor’s distillery on San Francisco’s Potrero Hill, from a mash of 100% rye malt. Rye was the grain of choice for America’s first distillers, and using a mash of 100% rye malt produces a uniquely American whiskey. Aging in handmade oak barrels–lightly toasted in the traditional manner–imparts a wonderfully subtle flavor to this 18th-century-style American whiskey. (In the 18th century, barrels were made by heating the staves over a fire of oak chips, allowing them to be bent and formed into a barrel shape. During this process, the inside of the barrel would become toasted–but not charred.) For aging, Anchor chose several uncharred oak barrels–both new and used–to achieve the balanced complexity that complements this whiskey’s unique heritage.

Chivas Regal Exclusive lebua Blend – Scotch Whisky News

lebua

Chivas Regal Exclusive lebua Blend

A Chivas Regal Exclusive Lebua Blend enjoyed a spectacular unveiling at the launch of the world’s highest outdoor whisky bar – Alfresco 64 – A Chivas Bar, at The Dome at Lebua in March.

Only 96 bottles of the Chivas Regal Exclusive Lebua Blend have been produced, with each bottle individually numbered. The launch celebrates the fifth anniversary of the partnership between Chivas Regal and the luxury hotel and resorts group, however this is the first time the brand has blended a whisky exclusively for Lebua.

The blend is exclusively available at the Chivas Bar, located in the stunning setting of the 63rd floor of the State Tower and Tower Club at Lebua in Bangkok.

About the blend

Created by Director of Blending, Sandy Hyslop, and his expert blending team, and introduced by Chivas Regal Blender Kevin Balmforth and Chivas Regal Custodian Master Blender Colin Scott in Thailand, the blend is composed of the finest whisky distilled in 1985 or earlier and laid down in a selection of casks including American Oak.

Following maturation in these casks for many years, they were then individually nosed and only the best were selected for this bespoke blend. After expertly marrying the chosen whiskies, the resulting blend was then left to rest in a first fill Sherry butt of exceptional quality. Over the following nine years, the blend developed its unique rich and smooth character with an undeniable intense flavour: a whisky of superlative quality, with rich fruity notes intermingled with a fantastic sherry character.

The Dalmore 40 Year Old

This 40 year old began its life at The Dalmore distillery in American white oak ex-bourbon casks before being transferred to 30 year old Matusalem sherry butts. After 7 years in these rare casks, the liquid was given its final flourish in first-fill American white oak bourbon casks.

Colombian coffee mingles with sultanas, dates and marmalade on the nose. The palate reveals gingerbread, molasses, maple syrup and honey-dipped brioche. The finish has blood orange, Bramley apples, liquorice and coconut.

Wathen’s Private Barrel “K&L Exclusive” Single Barrel Straight Kentucky Bourbon – American Whiskey News

wathans

Wathen’s Private Barrel “K&L Exclusive” Single Barrel Straight Kentucky Bourbon (750ml) ($39.99)

This exceptional single cask from the Medley Family is on another level. The Medleys are Kentucky legends and some of the few NDPs (Non-distiller producers) who actually get to dictate how their distilling partners produce the whiskey that they contract. That means truly taking over a distillery and produces bourbon to their exact specification. The result is a portfolio of whiskies with unique character at exceptional prices. This single cask was selected with Sam Medley and is easily one of the “smoothest” whiskies in the store. I don’t love to use that term because it’s essentially meaningless in real terms, but what I mean here is that there isn’t a sharp edge anywhere in this bottle. Round, supple, rich and comforting without being cloying or overtly sweet – this is a real drinkers whiskey. Notable are the aromatics of spiced honey, deep exotic mahogany, baked vanilla beans and subtle candied citrus. The palate is creme brulee over pepper and spice. The finish is easy and long without a hint of heat. This one was Sam’s favorite of the day and it was without a doubt ours as well. A superlative cask by any measure.

David Othenin-Girard | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 04, 2017

This wonderful cask of Wathen’s is definitely one of those sleeper whiskies. When we get a barrel of Weller, Eagle Rare or even Buffalo Trace people jump out of their seats to get one of the 200+ bottles. But Wathen’s hasn’t got the name recognition for the non-nerds and so it usually goes out on a real slow simmer. People slowly decided to try a bottle and then three or four weeks later they show up praying that we still have it. Objectively though, this cask bests every single Buffalo Trace single barrel we’ve received in the last 2-3 years. That’s kind of the beauty of the Wathen’s/Medley brand is that they can offer something that’s superlatively good and nobody seems to notice. While they won’t share the age statements here I’m happy to guess that this is at least 10+ years old. A big nose of vanilla bean, cacao nibs, maple syrup and barrel spice. Exotic woods and freshly varnished antique furniture meld perfectly with the candied fruit and savory spice. It feels totally mature. It’s RICH! Palate coating and forwardly sweet on the front. Then meanders toward and long spicy dry finish. Awesome texture and length here. This will likely be most peoples new favorite for the very short time that we get to enjoy it.

Invergordon 40 year old, 1977 Sovereign Scotch Whiskey at The Whisky Barrel – Scotch Whisky News

invergordod-40-year-old-1977-sovereign-feature-copy

Invergordon 40 year old, 1977 Sovereign Scotch Whisky

Invergordon Distillery is a bit of a ‘cat among the pigeons’ in the whisky world. Based towards northern Scotland it is somewhat out of place, due to being located among among the malt whiskey counterparts and so far from the belt of Scotland’s grain distilleries across central and southern Scotland. But being the grain outlier distillery has done no harm. In fact, Invergordon grain whiskey is highly regarded. And among the Independent whiskey bottling companies of Scotland, Invergordon single grain scotch whiskey is a reliable friend. Hunter Laing & Co. are one of a number of the ‘indies’ who cottoned on to this a long while ago and a handful of heavy vintage, single cask whiskies from Invergordon under their The Sovereign range. This latest release bottled in February 2017 is no different.
