Nose: Starts off with some rich oak notes that are dominant but balanced, followed by toasted marshmallows and dried fruit pudding, as well as cherries, marzipan and a hint of peat

Palate: Begins initially fruity with citrus notes and orange peel, after this: vanilla, butterscotch, honeycomb and digestive biscuits can all be tasted and enjoyed

Finish: Here we are at the finish with a velvet and smoothness that coats the finish with lemon meringue, to conclude, there’s an oiliness and a saltiness that you’d expect from a Campbeltown dram.

NEW RANGE OF TAILORED MEMBERSHIP PACKAGES FOR WHISKY CLUB WITH ADDED EXTRAS MAKE A DRAM FINE CHRISTMAS GIFT

The gift of membership of The Scotch Malt Whisky Society can now be tailored with optional extras such as bottles, a taster pack of drams and tasting tickets to suit the whisky fan in your life

If you’re looking for a Christmas present with a difference for the adventurous whisky fan, The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (www.smws.com/) has launched a new range of membership packages (www.smws.com/whisky-club-membership), which can be tailored with optional extras.

The Society is the world’s leading whisky club with a community of more than 26,000 malt-loving members around the world. The club, which was started by a group of friends in Edinburgh in 1983, specialises in single cask whisky and takes a unique approach to whisky by celebrating the flavours in the bottle through 12 unique flavour profiles.

New range of membership packages

The core annual membership of the Society costs £65 and provides whisky lovers with an array of benefits including: exclusive access to Society whiskies and other spirits; entry to the Society’s Members’ Rooms in Edinburgh and London; members’ rates for SMWS tasting events; discounted dram prices at SMWS partner bars; free subscription to Unfiltered, its award-winning members’ magazine; and savings on postage and packaging.

In time for Christmas, the Society has introduced a range of new membership packages (www.smws.com/whisky-club-membership), which allow buyers to build on the core annual membership (£65) with tailored optional extras to suit the preferences of the whisky lover in their life.

The new membership packages are:

  • Pioneer (£130): the most popular option – core annual membership PLUS a beautiful welcome pack containing three 10cl sample bottles, a £15 e-voucher, SMWS journal and club lapel badge
  • Champion (£110): core annual membership PLUS a specially selected bottle of the moment
  • Explorer (£90): core annual membership PLUS a Taster Pack containing five 25ml samples of Society whiskies from its 12 flavour profiles
  • High Flyer (£80) core annual membership PLUS a three-dram tasting flight for one person at the Society’s Kaleidoscope bars in London or Edinburgh
  • Sharer (£125): core annual membership PLUS two tasting vouchers (each worth £35) redeemable at any of the Society’s partner bars and events around the UK, and its Kaleidoscope bars in London and Edinburgh

The gift that keeps on giving

The Society releases around 20 new whiskies each month. Christmas is the perfect time to become a member as the Society releases one of its biggest-ever selections of bottles, with around 100 new bottles being released during November and December. This includes bottles with festive flavours and names such as ‘Curl up by the fire’ and ‘Hot apple and cinnamon sponge’.

Each whisky released by the Society is drawn from a single cask, which may only produce as few as 100 bottles, making each bottle a limited edition. Rather than reveal the name of the distillery where the whisky is from, The Society describes its bottles through the lens of flavour.

It releases its bottles through 12 unique flavour profiles with names such as Spicy & Dry and Old & Dignified; each bottle comes with a fun and evocative name, such as ‘Killer bee rum punch’ and ‘Hansel and Gretel at the Savoy’, and colourful Tasting Notes (‘gentle, sweet with a hint of spice like sticky rhubarb and ginger crumble or gooey vanilla cherry pie’) which detail the flavours.

In addition to its award-winning single malts, the Society now bottles an expanded range of other spirits such as gin, rum, cognac and bourbon through its new Single Cask Spirits range (www.smws.com/spirits). In December, this includes an Armagnac called ‘Amareng Amaretti’ and a bourbon called ‘A powerful concoction’.

Try before you buy

There are Scotch Malt Whisky Society Kaleidoscope bars situated in both Edinburgh and London, where guests can experience the range of whiskies and other spirits as well as a selection of fantastic food.

Visiting the bars is a great way to experience the Society for the first time and will provide the opportunity to learn about its history and its whiskies from the knowledgeable staff.

Kai Ivalo, Spirits Director at the Society, said: “It’s been an incredibly exciting year for the Society, with some of the most amazingly diverse whiskies and other spirits we’ve ever released. From our core single malts and our grain whiskies to our new selection of gin, rum, cognac and bourbon in our Single Cask Spirits range, there’s never been a better time to join the Society.”

The Whisky Ecxhange “Lost whisky distilleries of Scotland: our picks” – Scotch Whisky News

Lost whisky distilleries of Scotland: our picks

While there are hundreds of lost distilleries dotting the countryside north of the border, it’s rare to find whisky from any that closed before the 1980s. And if you do, it’s often more a collector’s item than something you’d open and drink. Here are some of the most popular closed distilleries whose whiskies you can still get your hands on:

Port Ellen

TWE1

The Port Ellen warehouses: pretty much all that remains of the distillery today

The biggest name in the world of lost distillers. It closed in 1983 without much fanfare, its buildings demolished or repurposed as part of the large maltings that now fills the site. However, it has exploded in popularity over the past 10 years. Much of Port Ellen’s spirit from the last few years of its life seems to have been filled into inactive casks, allowing it to mature slowly over decades, revealing sides to its character that were only hinted at while the distillery was still in production. Plans are in place to rebuild the distillery, with new buildings joining the few that remain from before its closure. It should be up and running by 2020.

Find whiskies from Port Ellen >

Brora

TWE2

Brora distillery a few years ago. It was fairly intact then, and Diageo have been sprucing it up in the intervening years

More of a cult distillery than Port Ellen, Brora closed at the same time as part of the mass closures of 1983. It was the original Clynelish, closed when the current distillery opened in the late 1960s. A few years later it was renamed Brora – after the town it sits on the edge of – and reopened to make smoky whisky. The levels of smoke dropped over the years until it closed for good. As with Port Ellen, long maturation in less active casks has created excellent whiskies, combining Clynelish’s classic waxy character with smoky farmyard notes. It is also being rebuilt, although as most of the distillery is still in place, the project looks to be less challenging than Port Ellen. We will hopefully be able to try new Brora by the early 2030s.

Rosebank

TWE3

Rosebank back in 1980. While these two buildings remain (and are visible on Google Streetview), most of the rest of the distillery was converted to flats and offices

The third distillery which will shortly be reopened. Closed in 1993 as part of a later market downturn than Brora or Port Ellen, Rosebank’s loss was more mourned at the time, thanks to a reputation for producing incredible Lowland whisky. Unfortunately, lack of room to expand and lack of easy transport links for tourists combined with mounting maintenance costs meant it was selected for closure ahead of fellow Lowlander Glenkinchie. While there hasn’t been as much of a frenzy for its whiskies as there has for Port Ellen and Brora, the increasingly rare releases from both previous owner Diageo and independents are increasingly getting attention. Ian Macleod, owner of Glengoyne and Tamdhu, has now acquired the name and the original site, and will be rebuilding the distillery, with an opening date of 2019 planned. Much of the original distillery was turned into offices and flats, so we’re intrigued to see what happens.

Littlemill

TWE4

First partially demolished and then burnt to the ground, nothing remains of Littlemill today. All that remains is apartments on a newly laid road: Littlemill Place

A history-laden site, with alleged roots going back to the 1750s, making it maybe Scotland’s oldest distillery. Unfortunately, the 1990s’ downturn led to its closure in 1992 and by 2004 it had not only been deliberately demolished but also ravaged by fire, leaving very little of it left. For years after there were unremarkable (and occasionally awful) releases of whisky from the distillery, but since 2010 that has changed. Stocks of great, well-aged whisky has appeared and the distillery’s reputation has been revived. Owner Loch Lomond Group releases occasional official bottlings, and independents still have some stock – it’s definitely a whisky to seek out, but stick to more recent releases.

Find whiskies from Littlemill >

Imperial

TWE5

Imperial as it once was and Dalmunach, which now occupies the site

A distillery which opened and closed several times during its life, Imperial finally shut its doors for good in 1998. Known for producing a light and floral style of whisky in the heart of Speyside, surrounded by more heavyweight distilleries, it didn’t pick up the same sort of following as Brora, Port Ellen and Rosebank, despite the whiskies having some similarities to the latter. In 2013, despite a booming whisky market and rumours that it might be reopened, owner Chivas Brothers demolished Imperial and built ultra-modern Dalmunach distillery on the site. Bottles of Imperial are still being released and are incredibly reasonably priced for whisky from a closed distillery – a great place to start your exploration of lost distillers.

Glenlivet 11 Year Old Cask #900552

For the latest instalment of The Whisky Barrel 10th Anniversary series, earlier this year we selected a first fill sherry hogshead from Signatory warehouses in the Scottish Highlands. During the 1850s the Edinburgh firm of Andrew Usher produced the first vatting of malt whiskey from a single distillery using a number of different vintages of Glenlivet whiskey. Following expansion in 2010 this distillery is now equipped with fourteen stills making it one of the largest malt whiskey distilleries in Scotland. The range includes Glenlivet Founders Reserve and Nadurra.

Swiss hotel confirms £7,700 per-dram bottle of rare Macallan 1878 was distilled in the 1970s – Scotch Whisky News

The-bottle-of-Macallan-18781-1920x2848

One of the world’s most expensive drams turns out to be fake!

Swiss hotel confirms £7,700 per-dram bottle of rare Macallan 1878 was distilled in the 1970s

One of the world’s only known bottles of Macallan 1878 still in circulation has been officially exposed as a fake following an investigation by Rare Whisky 101 working in partnership with Sandro Bernasconi, Waldhaus Am See Hotel Manager and Bar Manager at Devils Place.

The Waldhaus Hotel Am See in St Moritz hit the headlines earlier this summer after a Chinese customer paid 9,999 Swiss Francs (c£7,700) for a glass of the rare Scotch whisky, thought to be the most ever paid for a poured dram of liquid gold. Were the bottle genuine, it would have carried a bar-value of around 300,000 Swiss Francs (£230,000).

Following a series of investigative and forensic tests carried out by RW101, the whisky has been shown to date back no further than 1970, deeming it almost worthless as a collector’s item. Sandro Bernasconi from the Hotel has flown to Asia in the last week to refund the paying customer in full.

One of the world’s leading authorities on rare whisky, RW101 was called in by the hotel owner following publicity surrounding the sale of the dram. The eye-watering price paid for a drop of this seemingly rare vintage caused a stir among a number of experts within the whisky industry who have questioned its authenticity and asked for clarity on what exactly the bottle contains.

A sample of the Macallan 1878 was subsequently collected by the team at RW101, and flown back to the UK for a series of forensic tests and analysis to determine, as best as modern science allows, the precise composition of the liquid. Firstly, and most critically, the liquid was subjected to carbon dating at the University of Oxford to verify the year of distillation.

The conclusion from Rare Whisky 101’s investigation is that the whisky is a modern fake. Results from University of Oxford’s Research Laboratory for Archaeology and The History of Art suggested a 95% probability that the liquid was created between 1970 and 1972. Subsequent laboratory tests carried out by Tatlock and Thomson (providers of scientific services to the wine and spirits industry) showed the sprit was most likely a blended scotch comprised of 60% Malt and 40% Grain.

Ken Grier from The Macallan brand owner, Edrington, commented: “As the leading brand in the fast growing secondary market for rare whiskies, with an estimated 30% share by value, we take this very seriously. We praise the work that our partners, RW101, are doing to bring awareness of any fraud to light. We would urge consumers to buy from reputable sources at all times.”

RW101 co-founder David Robertson commented: “The Waldhaus team have done exactly the right thing by trying to authenticate this whisky. Over the past year, we have been invited by numerous bottle owners and auction houses to assess suspicious bottles. Indeed, we’ve noticed an increasing number of old, rare archive or antique bottles coming to market at auction, and it’s difficult to know how prevalent this problem is. We would implore that others in the market do what they can to identify any rogue bottles. The more intelligence we can provide, the greater the chance we have to defeat the fakers and fraudsters who seek to dupe the unsuspecting rare whisky consumer. We’re also working closely with The Macallan brand owner, Edrington, as they start to take a leadership position on fake whisky.

“As with any purchase, we would recommend that each buyer does their research, assesses the bottle and its packaging presentation, and where they can afford to do so, send some of the liquid for technical evaluation and/or carbon dating. If you do have a pre-1900’s bottle we suggest it’s worth extracting a sample to prove if it is genuine or not (most likely not). Even if the bottle has been opened, if you can prove the whisky was distilled pre 1900, then you have some very valuable whisky to enjoy!”

Sandro Bernasconi, Waldhaus Am See Hotel Manager and Bar Manager at Devils Place said: “When it comes to selling our customers some of the world’s rarest and oldest whiskies, we felt it was our duty to ensure that our stock is 100% authentic and the real deal. That’s why we called in RW101. The result has been a big shock to the system, and we are delighted to have repaid our customer in full as a gesture of goodwill.”

About Rare Whisky 101
Andy Simpson and David Robertson launched Rare Whisky 101 in 2014 with the aim of offering a whisky valuation service, brokerage and consultancy for whisky connoisseurs, collectors and investors. In the last 12 months, RW101 have brokered around 20,000 rare whisky bottles around the globe in addition to trading in aged casks from iconic distilleries such as The Macallan, Ardbeg, Bowmore, Springbank, Mortlach, Talisker, Caol Ila, Lagavulin and Highland Park.
