A lens on our cask journey by Steve McCurry

“I loved the scale of this place. The warehouse was huge and so great to photograph. It reminded me of the closing scene of the film Raiders of the Lost Ark where the ark is stored in a huge warehouse and lost forever.”
– Steve McCurry

Legendary photographer Steve McCurry has built his reputation on his unique ability to create intense narratives told through a single frame. His work has covered conflicts, vanishing cultures, ancient traditions and contemporary culture alike – with a powerful emphasis on the human element that made his iconic image of the Afghan Girl so powerful and in turn so celebrated.

We invited him to apply this trademark storytelling to the journey of our exceptional oak casks and the extraordinary lengths we go to in delivering the quality, natural colour and distinctive flavours of our timeless spirit.

Capturing the strong sense of place, the environment and the human stories that contribute to the journey of our casks, McCurry has cast his unique lens on the world of The Macallan and our commitment to the mastery of wood and spirit. Follow us on Instagram to see the series unfold >>>

Re-discovering cask 4063

Our commitment to laying down our spirit in only the highest quality casks has contributed to The Macallan’s unique and unrivalled flavour profile for decades.

One single cask story in our archive is that of cask 4063; an Oloroso Sherry Butt that was laid to rest in The Macallan warehouses in March 1980.

Selected by our Master Whisky Maker over two decades later for all of the flavours he likes in a whisky – spicy wood, citrus and dark chocolate – this single cask was bottled and released as a 21 years old whisky in late 2001. With a natural cask strength of 59.3% ABV and a particularly dark tint for The Macallan, this cask was reserved to be enjoyed in its own right.
