Ohishi “‘K&L Exclusive”‘ Single Sherry Cask #1023 Japanese Whisky – Japanese Whisky News

aa-ohishi

Ohishi “‘K&L Exclusive”‘ Single Sherry Cask #1023 Japanese Whisky (750ml) ($74.99)

The Ohishi distillery is located on the banks of the Kuma River, one Japan’s fastest flowing rivers. The distillery was founded in 1872 and produces some of the most exciting whisky coming out of Japan. Ohishi grows at least 30% of the rice that they distill, and the fertile soils and exceptional growing climate make for some of the finest base ingredients available. The strain of rice is called “gohyakumanishi” (meaning “five million stones”), and an organic method of cultivation is utilized that requires the use of koi carp for weed control. The rest of the grain is procured from local farms in Kumamoto prefecture and is of the short grained Mochi variety. The grains are partially malted and then distilled on the traditional Japanese stills before being filled into ex-sherry and brandy casks and aged for a long time time in high-altitude warehouses. This cask brings in a great balanced sherry influence and definitely feels more like Scotch than our single cask from the Fukano Distillery. This cask will likely be the only one we get for a while, considering the recent events in Kumamoto prefecture. Our last cask sold out in a flash, so we can expect this special cask to go very quickly as well.

David Othenin-Girard | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: December 13, 2016

This magic little cask of Ohishi proves again there is just nothing wrong with rice whisky, nothing at all. The nose is wonderfully fresh and keeps you on your feet for a big dose of fresh cut apple, followed by a deep dark Oloroso note, and sweet caramelized citrus. Subtle yet full of life, the whole thing builds and brings you some lovely hints of funk around these very pretty fruit flavors. The palate is pretty weighty, but balance is the key factor. The freshness isn’t lost at all, and some cocoa and barrel spice along with dark vanilla bean and slight earthy warehouse funk take over. It’s so utterly drinkable it will be difficult to put down, if you know what I’m saying. Beware!

Chivas Supports Action Fund

Scotch Whisky Action Fund – learning from experience and planning for the future

Chivas Brothers has been supporting organisations across Scotland aiming to combat alcohol misuse through the Scotch Whisky Action Fund.

Six organisations were awarded grants and among them was the Orkney Alcohol Counselling and Advisory Services (OACAS) who discussed their Pub Watch Rehabilitation Scheme.

Bob MacKenzie, offending prevention and rehabilitation worker with OACAS, said that the problem of ‘pre-loading’ where people consume alcohol before going out in the evening leads to issues for those individuals and pub licensees. His project is targeting local schools and colleges to help change this pattern of behaviour.

The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) set up the £500,000 Scotch Whisky Action Fund in December 2013 to give a total of £100,000 for five years to projects working to reduce harm in Scotland. The fund, which extends the SWA’s commitment to addressing alcohol misuse and promoting responsible drinking, is managed by Foundation Scotland, an independent charity.

An event was held recently at the Trades Hall in Glasgow to share key learning and experiences from organisations benefiting from the fund. The audience, made up of voluntary organisations, members of the Scotch Whisky industry including Chivas Brothers heard from Dame Joan Stringer, chair of the Scotch Whisky Action Fund independent awards panel.

She said:  “It’s important to understand what has been achieved by the projects and the outcomes of their interventions. By sharing those experiences we can learn what works, what doesn’t work and what the key challenges are.”

Summing up the event, Scotch Whisky Association acting chief executive Julie Hesketh-Laird, said: “Today’s speakers showed the passion, effort and hard work behind their projects. And I would like to add that partnership working to tackle alcohol misuse is important to the entire Scotch Whisky industry.”

The Scotch Whisky Action Fund will re-open for applications from January 2017.

Scotch Malt Whisky Society of Canada January 2017 Outturn – Scotch Whsky News

smws-jan-2017

If your New Year resolution is to enjoy more great whisky, then you’ve come to the right place.  Let the January Outturn awaken your senses – new year, new whisky adventures!

CASK No. 41.76  SUNSHINE IN A GLASS

11 years old; 1st fill barrel; 60.4%; Juicy, oak & vanilla

Aromas of lemon sponge cake, lemon sorbet and a light lemon linguine with the palate carrying on the theme; zesty lemon tart and caramelized lemon rice pudding. Water added to the lemon sweetness floral notes with a lip-smacking frozen sherbet cocktail.

CASK No. 36.101  DANGEROUSLY QUAFFABLE

18 years old; refill barrel; 57.9%; Sweet, fruity & mellow

Prosecco, sponge fingers in strawberry jelly, perfume and Mojito aromas. Water made it lightly floral (nasturtium), dusty (hay and sherbet lemons) and summery (Victoria sponge and fruit squash). Light and milky flavours – lemon meringue pie and a fruit smoothie.

CASK No. 26.117  SILKY SMOOTH SUNDOWNER

14 years old; 2nd fill Sauternes hogshead; 56.8%; Light & delicate

This is a ‘whispering dram’.  Listening carefully we ‘heard’ gorse bushes on a cliff side and vanilla & Tonka bean scented candles. Diluted, perfumed hand cream and silky smooth on the palate.  This whisky previously inhabited an ex-bourbon hogshead.

CASK No. G1.12  MOUTH-PUCKERING CITRUS AND PLEASANT SWEETNESS

23 years old; refill hogshead; 60.3%; Juicy, oak & vanilla

Delicate, yet lively, the nose has honey, vanilla, waffles and orange blossom, but mainly fruit (lemon drizzle cake, melon, tangerine, strawberry). The palate balances mouth-puckering citrus (lemon sherbet, lime zest) with crème anglaise and French fancies; dry woody spices to finish.

CASK No. 35.145  LOST IN THE DESSERT

24 years old; 2nd fill hogshead; 57.6%; Old & dignified

Which dessert were in? Apricot tart, lemon curd or spiced apple pie? Vanilla pods sprouted from the icing sugar as we passed dunes of coconut and Turkish delight. On the horizon… an oasis of green apple trees beside a lake of Manuka honey and cream.

CASK No. 42.21  PLOUGHMAN’S ON THE BEACH

9 years old; refill barrel; 59.4%; Lightly peated

Aromas of wet rope on a sandy beach, seaweed and Iberico ham made this a maritime, salty and slightly smoky experience whilst on the palate, a seafood barbecue. Water added smouldering tractor tires and a ploughman’s platter on the beach.

CASK No. 29.179  TARRY ROPES ON A WOODEN BOAT

16 years old; refill barrel; 51.6%; Peated

The nose is suffused with smoke, tar, seaweed and lemon squeezed scallops – plus toffee popcorn and Parma violets. The deeply satisfying palate has lavender, liquorice, wood embers, ash and tarry ropes on a wooden boat. Aromatic, invigorating and full of personality.

Buffalo Trace Distillery Donation Helps Raise $215,000 – American Whiskey News

Buffalo Trace Distillery Donation Helps Raise $215,000

for Emeril Lagasse Foundation

Over a Quarter of a Million Dollars Raised through Buffalo Trace Donations Since 2013

FRANKFORT, FRANKLIN COUNTY, KY (Dec. 13, 2016) For the past twelve years, the Emeril Lagasse Foundation has held a fundraising weekend which raises money for children’s charities nationwide. In 2013 Buffalo Trace Distillery joined the fundraising weekend as a sponsor of the foundation’s Friday night Festivities, Boudin, Bourbon & Beer. For the past three years Buffalo Trace Distillery has donated a live auction package to Emeril’s signature event, the Carnivale du Vin wine auction, and has helped raise over a quarter of a million in funds.

In November of 2016 Buffalo Trace’s auction lot helped raise a whopping $215,000; $150,000 of that will specifically be assigned to Emeril’s culinary garden and teaching program.

This year’s prize package from Buffalo Trace Distillery included more than 30 highly sought after whiskies from the National Historic Landmark Distillery, including the elusive Pappy Van Winkle Rye and a very rare bottling from Buffalo Trace’s 5 Millionth Barrel, distilled in 1981. Also included in the prize pack was a trip for four to Buffalo Trace, including first class airline tickets, overnight accommodations and many other extras. This year’s winner, Noah McMahon, is excited about his upcoming trip, stating “This is a dream come true for me and my friends as we are huge fans of all of the Buffalo Trace brands. The trip to Kentucky will be once-in-a-lifetime and something we will never forget!” McMahon will be scheduling his trip to Kentucky soon.

The Emeril Lagasse Foundation was founded in 2002 by Chef Emeril Lagasse and his wife Alden and has granted more than $7.5 million to children’s charities to support culinary, nutrition and arts programs. Lagasse’s Fund a Need program, of which part of McMahon’s

donation will go towards, is a program that fully integrates both gardening and cooking elements into school curriculums.
