From the Lab to Loch Fyne: Glenfiddich Experimental Series – Scotch Whisky News

From the Lab to Loch Fyne

Glenfiddich Experimental Series

Working in the lab late one night, Glenfiddich Malt Master, Brian Kinsman, flipped the switch that brought two new whiskies to life. Far from creating Frankenstein’s monster, the result was Glenfiddich IPA Experiment and Project XX (that’s “Project Twenty” to you and me).

IPA Experiment is the first Single Malt Whisky to be finished in India Pale Ale craft beer casks, while Project XX is the fruit of twenty whisky experts from around the globe selecting their favourite Glenfiddich cask, which Kinsman then married together in a small batch vatting. Both these ground-breaking whiskies are now available to order at Loch Fyne.

Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 142: Braunstein Danica Peated Whisky

Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, tries a peated Danish whisky. During his visit to the Braunstein Distillery in Koge (near Copenhagen), the owner offered him a free miniature of the peated version of this Danish single malt. They actually import barley that is peated at the famous Port Ellen maltings. It turns out to be one of the best NAS-whiskies Mark has tried in a very long time.

Longmorn 30 Year Old 1985 vintage Speyside single malt Scotch whisky. Single cask refill hogshead bottled May 2016 by Hunter Laing & Co. for the Old & Rare Platinum Selection. 157 numbered bottles. A golden whisky with a rich nose of vanilla ice cream, honey, milk chocolate and butter shortbread. The palate is smooth and buttery with notes of vanilla custard, sultanas and citrus peel. The finish is long, lingering and slightly dry with a hint of oak and nuts. Longmorn Distillery was established in 1893 just north of Fogwat and beside the Strathspey Railway which whisked its deep and sumptuous whisky south to the scotch blenders. Longmorn Distillery is a Speyside malt whisky distillery and is now equipped with eight stills. Although Longmorn Distillery does not have a visitor centre it often participates in the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival when a few lucky visitors can tour the distillery.

ARDBEG TWENTY ONE LAUNCHES TO CELEBRATE DISTILLERY’S MOST PERILOUS DAYS – Scotch Whisky News

ardbeg-twenty-one_lr

ARDBEG TWENTY ONE LAUNCHES TO CELEBRATE DISTILLERY’S MOST PERILOUS DAYS

Ardbeg has announced that its latest Limited Edition whisky is a 21 year old single malt, distilled at one of the most turbulent times in Ardbeg’s history. A testament to the dedication of those who fought through the Distillery’s darkest days to keep its untamed spirit alive, Ardbeg Twenty One will be released exclusively to Ardbeg’s loyal following, the Ardbeg Committee, in recognition of their vital role in safeguarding the Distillery’s future.

Ardbeg’s precarious past – and its enduring hold on the future – are celebrated in the rare, Limited Edition Ardbeg Twenty One. This golden expression began life on Ardbeg’s remote Scottish island home in the mid-1990s.  Its whitewashed walls were faded and crumbling, and distilling at Ardbeg had dwindled to almost nothing. A small group, including the young Mickey Heads (now our esteemed Distillery Manager), set aside a small number of casks for Ardbeg’s future – including some containing whisky distilled during those perilous days when the Distillery’s future was still uncertain.

Today, Ardbeg’s future is in safe hands: the Ardbeg Committee, formed to prevent the Distillery’s doors ever closing again, is 120,000-strong, with members in more than 130 countries.  Mickey Heads, who is the Chairman of the Ardbeg Committee, said: “Ardbeg Twenty One is a shining example of Ardbeg’s enduring spirit.  I’m so pleased we can share it with our members.  The Committee have invested much in ensuring the future of the Distillery and it’s only right that they should share the rewards of its turbulent past too.”

Dr Bill Lumsden, Director of Distilling, Whisky Creation & Whisky Stocks at Ardbeg, said: “I selected the casks for this sumptuous, golden whisky as they combine the distinctive, peppery smokiness of Ardbeg’s award-winning malt with soothing, buttery qualities.  Born from adversity, Ardbeg Twenty One is the perfect dram to celebrate the resilience of Ardbeg and The Ardbeg Committee’s enduring loyalty.”

Ardbeg Twenty One is non chill-filtered and bottled at 46% ABV. It is priced at £310 and goes on sale to committee members on 21st September 2016.

www.ardbeg.com

NOTES:

Tasting Notes:

Ardbeg Twenty One is non chill-filtered and bottled at 46% ABV. This pale gold whisky contains aromas of tarry smoke, Ardbeg ice-cream and black pepper, with herbal top notes.  Its peppery, fizzy mouthfeel gives way to tastes of liquorice, charcoal, peppermint and vanilla with a dash of spice, leading to a long, soothing finish of coal tar, aniseed and smoky butter.

Ardbeg:

Ardbeg prides itself on being The Ultimate Islay Malt Whisky.  Established in 1815, Ardbeg is revered by connoisseurs around the world as the peatiest, smokiest and most complex of all the Islay malts.  Despite its smokiness, Ardbeg is renowned for its delicious sweetness, a phenomenon that has affectionately become known as ‘the peaty paradox’.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Ardbeg suffered from an uncertain future.  Following a long closure period in the 1980s, Ardbeg was acquired by Allied Distillers Ltd in 1989.  Back then, the Distillery was in a dilapidated state with only a small amount of whisky distilled, mainly for blending.  In 1996 Ardbeg’s doors were closed – it seemed for good.  Thankfully, Heads and a few others believed Ardbeg would rise again and they set aside a small number of casks to protect the future of the Distillery.  But it was not until the brand was purchased by The Glenmorangie Company in 1997 that the Distillery was saved from extinction.  Since then, the Distillery has risen like a phoenix and today Ardbeg is well established as a niche, cult malt, with a passionate following.

Ardbeg Committee:

The legacy of the whisky was safeguarded in 2000 by the formation of the Ardbeg Committee.  The Committee is made up of thousands of Ardbeg followers worldwide who are keen to ensure that “the doors of Ardbeg never close again”.  Today there are 120,000 members of the Ardbeg Committee in more than 130 countries.  Committee members are regularly consulted on new bottlings and expressions and are offered exclusive Committee bottlings.  Members also receive invitations to special gatherings, tastings and events.  The Committee is free to join at www.ardbeg.com

About Ardbeg’s Awards:

Ardbeg is the world’s most highly awarded smoky single malt whisky.  Since 2008, Ardbeg has won more than 50 gold and double gold medals in key whisky competitions.  Ardbeg was voted ‘Scotch Whisky of the Year’ three years in a row by Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible.  It was also awarded ‘World’s Best Single Malt’ and ‘Best Islay Single Malt’ at the World Whiskies Awards 2013.  At the 2014 awards, Michael Heads of Ardbeg was voted ‘Distillery Manager of the Year’.  The following year, Ardbeg’s expressions took the top three spots in Whisky Advocate magazine’s review of the best single malt Scotch whiskies under US$100.  Meanwhile, both Ardbeg Corryvreckan and Ardbeg Uigeadail have been awarded gold medals at the 2016 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

The Glenmorangie Company:

The Company is one of the most renowned and innovative distillers and marketers of Scotch whisky brands worldwide and is part of Moët Hennessy, the wine and spirits division of Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton.  Headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland, the Company produces Glenmorangie Single Highland Malt whisky and Ardbeg Single Islay Malt whisky.

Responsible Drinking:

Ardbeg and The Glenmorangie Company advocate responsible drinking and suggest that drinkers savour Ardbeg whiskies in moderation and in line with recommended daily guidelines for alcohol consumption.

K&L California Whisk(e)y News – September 2016 – Whisky News

aa-kl1

We’re moving deep into whisky season now that September is here! I hope you’re all in the mood for whisky drinkin’ because we’re going to have plenty of whisky coming your way over the next few months. Take a look at what just came in:

NEW FAULTLINE SINGLE MALT

It’s been a while since we bottled a cask of single malt whisky under our exclusive Faultline label, but in conjunction with our friends at Seven Grand in LA, we decided to co-purchase a barrel of Caol Ila and do a little co-branding. Keeping true with our tradition, we brought in another local artist to do the label. Linh Do, who posts her incredible whisky-related artwork on Instagram as “whiskyanorach,” created this maritime-inspired image for our Islay delight. Rum barrel-aged Caol Ila definitely reminds one of the sea! The nose is an explosion of both freshly-cut and burnt peat, mixed with a little sea breeze. The rum influence comes later on the palate as a subtle sweet highlight to a classically Caol Ila profile of creamy fruit and bright smoke. The finish flutters with a flurry of fresh baking spices before morphing back into a phenolic frenzy. Nothing about this whisky feels overtly powerful or brash despite the 58% ABV. Everything about this Faultline Caol Ila moves as gently as the wind and waves upon a mellow, rum-soaked sea. Only 261 bottles were tapped from this barrel and a large portion of those went to Seven Grand’s back bar. Available for a limited time only!

A PAIR OF NEW WHISKY ARRIVALS FROM JAPAN

aa-kl3

The great Japanese whisky awakening has left the country’s most prominent distillers scrambling to find the supply to satisfy today’s demand. Nikka’s first two single malt offerings in the U.S., a 15 year old Yoichi and a 12 year Miyagikyo, were discontinued last year after the company realized its stocks were not sufficient enough to satiate the public’s thirst. Rather than move away from single malts entirely, Nikka went back to the drawing board and crafted two generic single malt offerings, simply called Yoichi and Miyagikyo, allowing for more flexibility seeing there would be no minimum age requirement to struggle against. While skeptics may see the move as a step backward in terms of quality, I can promise you that true Japanese whisky fans will be thrilled by both of these whiskies. They’re fantastic in that: 1) they’re both delicious, and 2) textbook Japanese in every way. The grace and beauty of these new distillery editions showcases not only Nikka’s tremendous blending skills, but also the inherent character of these whiskies. They have an elegance that we just don’t see from Scotland. I bought one of each immediately after tasting. My notes are as follows:

Nikka “Yoichi” Japanese Single Malt Whisky $79.99

Nikka’s latest release from Yoichi distillery no longer carries an age statement, but it does bring a classically Japanese whisky profile back to the market. All the delicacy, grace, and subtle complexity is alive and well in this release, buried deeply into a whisper of malt for those who take the time to let it be heard. The first sip is almost ghostly, but it’s the second and third return that yield the slightest hint of peat smoke, the creamiest of malts, and the lovely roundness of sweet stonefruit. This is textbook Japanese whisky: a flavor reserved so as not to overwhelm potential food pairings like sushi or other delicate offerings, yet a wonderful depth of flavor done with the slightest of hands. Yoichi is located on Japan’s Hokkaido island where such food pairings are prevalent. It’s definitely a single malt with a sense of place. The gentle smell and flavor of the sea linger long on the finish.

Nikka “Miyagikyo” Japanese Single Malt Whisky $79.99

Nikka’s Miyagikyo distillery is back on the market with a fantastic new offering that doesn’t disclose the age, but has no problem disclosing serious flavor. The sherry integration of the whisky is utterly marvelous. It’s clearly marked by classic notes of fudge, fruitcake, and toffee, but all three profiles are so harmonious and fluid that it’s difficult to hold on to them for more than a second. Nikka’s whiskies are always delicate and feminine in style, and this malt is no different. The beauty is what stuns you, rather than the power or the concentration. The finish is a wonderful symphony of toasted almonds, cherry, and Oloroso richness. The new Miyagikyo should captivate an entirely new following for Nikka’s second distillery.

AMARO BILARO

As the amaro renaissance continues to heat up, we’re now seeing some local California players enter the market with fantastic results. Amaro Bilaro is made in Sebastopol from a locally-distilled grape base and thirteen different herbs and botanicals by a husband and wife team based in Sonoma. Some of those herbs are grown right in their own backyard, while others like gentian are sourced. The result is a strikingly savory amaro that definitely brings more of the bitter than the sweet side of the spirit. Myrrh, bitter orange, cinnamon, and as well as mint and rosemary combine into a fantastic harmony that’s all California, while remaining Italian at heart. For those looking for a drier, more cocktail friendly amaro, this one’s for you! Amaro Bilaro $44.99

OLD POTRERO RETURNS!

aa-kl5

Now that’s it almost Fall, we’re getting our Fall allocations of the rare American whiskies you love to love! Our favorite San Francisco rye whiskey is back in ample supply, so take advantage of our full shelves while they’re still full!

Old Potrero Single Malt 18th Century Style Whiskey $69.99

Francisco’s Potrero Hill, from a mash of 100% rye malt. Rye was the grain of choice for America’s first distillers, and using a mash of 100% rye malt produces a uniquely American whiskey. Aging in handmade oak barrels–lightly toasted in the traditional manner–imparts a wonderfully subtle flavor to this 18th-century-style American whiskey. (In the 18th century, barrels were made by heating the staves over a fire of oak chips, allowing them to be bent and formed into a barrel shape. During this process, the inside of the barrel would become toasted–but not charred.) For aging, Anchor chose several uncharred oak barrels–both new and used–to achieve the balanced complexity that complements this whiskey’s unique heritage.

Old Potrero Single Malt Straight Rye Whiskey $69.99

The new release of Anchor’s highly sought-after straight rye. Bottled at slightly higher proof this year, but, as usual, this whiskey was aged for 3.5 years in new charred oak barrels. Very limited.

That’s it for today! Stay tuned, however, as we’ve got plenty more coming! David Driscoll K&L Spirits Buyer daviddriscoll@klwines.com 650.556.2736 http://spiritsjournal.klwines.com

Caperdonich 21 Year Old 1994 vintage Speyside single malt Scotch whiskey. Single cask refill hogshead bottled April 2016 by Hunter Laing & Co. for the Old & Rare Platinum Collection. 200  numbered bottles. Caperdonich Distillery was founded in 1897 and its two stills were fired up a year later. Caperdonich Distillery was situated beside the North of Scotland Railway in the north west corner of Rothes in Scotland’s Speyside whisky region and was established at a time when whisky sales were on the up and up. But Caperdonich Distillery opened just as whisky sales crashed and subsequent wars and prohibition inhibited its recovery. And having closed in 1902 it remained mothballed until 1965 when the stills were fired up once again. It closed once more in 2002, and now that we have finally come to appreciate the complexity and depth of Caperdonich malt whisky …… demolished in 2011. Caperdonich whisky was intended primarily for blended scotch but a small volume has been released by independent bottles as Caperdonich single malt whisky. Malt Messenger Bulletin – Fall 2016 Tasting Schedule, Whisky Advent 2016 & More

I hope you all had a wonderful summer! I’m just back from a little break, and it was wonderful. I am feeling rejuvenated and refreshed which is good, because there is a lot coming down the pipe and a lot to do. We have a very full fall tasting schedule, some exciting new exclusives and single casks. There is also our Kensington Wine Market 2016 Whisky Advent Calendar… lots to do and lots to discuss, so lets get to it.

We have had a flurry of orders for the 2016 Whisky Advent Calendar over the last week as our early bird deadline approached. It was Thursday, but in case you missed it we’ve decided to extend it until midnight Sunday. So you have just under 36 hours left, to get in your request and save $35 on the 2016 edition. It is full of all new whiskies, none of the bottlings have been featured in the previous two editions, and there’s a very special Scotch Malt Whisky Society bottling this year. You won’t want to miss out. Order before the end of September 18 and save $35 off the $400+GST retail price.

Our Fall 2016 Kensington Wine Market Tasting Schedule has been live for a few weeks! We have lots of exciting new wine, beer, whisky and other spirit tastings. Our Fall Single Malt Festival has sold out, but there are 7 days of whisky Master Classes in November to check out, and also a release party for our exciting new Glenfarclas 25 Year Cask Strength, bottled to mark our 25th Anniversary next year!

Some cool new whiskies came in over the summer, like our Alberta exclusive Shelter Point Inaugural Run Single Malt. It has been a big hit and flying off the shelves. So has the Inaugural release of Wolfburn Single Malt, from the northernmost mainland distillery in Scotland. Most impressive is the new Glengoyne 25 Year, a stunning new sherried single malt from the Highland distillery just north of Glasgow. At $410, it is very well priced for its quality when compared to some other famous 25 year olds on the market. And the staff all love it!

Lots to look forward to in the months ahead as well, including the Glenmorangie Milsean, the distillery’s 2016 Private Collection release. We have an open bottle at the shop if you want to give it a try before placing an order. It is due in store in October. 2016 KWM Whisky Advent Calendar

Early bird deadline extended until Sunday, September 18!

For the 3rd year in a row, Kensington Wine Market is producing its own Whisky Advent Calendar. 2014 and 2015’s editions were a huge hit, and sold out well before the start of Advent. Save $35 by pre-ordering your calendar before September 18.

We are really excited about our 2016 KWM Whisky Advent Calendar. For the third straight year we have designed and built our own exclusive Whisky Advent Calendar, featuring a custom logo Glencairn glass, 24 50ml whiskies and a 100ml Christmas Day bottling from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (The Society). The Society is the world’s largest whisky club, and bottles whiskies exclusively for its members. This year’s Calendar has a single cask from the Society that has been selected and bottled exclusively for the Calendar and Canadian Society members (750ml bottles will be made available to Society members in January!). In collaboration with the Society’s Canadian branch, we were even given the opportunity to name the whisky… Since Society whiskies are exclusively available to Society members, this is an opportunity for non-members to get their hands on a Society whisky. Recipients of the KWM Whisky Advent Calendar will be the first people to sample this exciting new whisky!

The Kensington Wine Market Whisky Advent Calendar is more than just a product for us, it is a way for us to share and connect with other whisky lovers in Calgary, Alberta and across Canada. Details on the whiskies released and their distillery will be posted on the KWM Blog each day. Recipients of the Calendar are encouraged to share their thoughts with us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The KWM Whisky Advent Calendar also comes with a 10% discount card, good for any of the whiskies in the Calendar (excepting the Society whisky), subject to availability.

Save $35 by ordering before September 18. A $150 deposit will be taken per calendar requested starting on August 1st. The balance will be charged when the calendar is ready for pickup!

Originally this first ever release of single malt whisky from a new Canadian distillery was not supposed to come to Alberta or the rest of Canada at all! But we weren’t prepared to let that be the final word, especially after sampling it. So we begged and pleaded and the distillery agreed to give us exclusivity on the whisky in Alberta!

Shelter Point Inaugural Run Single Malt – 46% – American Oak – Andrew’s Tasting Note:

“Nose: fresh, floral and fruity, honey and loads of malt; very doughy, dried orange cubes, very sugary and baked apples with cinnamon. Palate: thick, honeyed and malty with prominent licorice and loads of sugars including white, brown sugar and darker Demerara; still floral and vegetal with crisp toasty oak. Finish: long, coating and malty with touches of spice, oak, white fruit, sugars and spice. Comment: if this is a hint of things to come, then Shelter Point is on the right track, young but balanced and complex.” – $80

Introducing The Wolfburn Single Malt First Release

The first ever whisky release from the new northern-most distillery in Scotland, is coming first to the Kensington Wine Market!

Kensington Wine Market is thrilled to be the first store in Canada to launch the new Wolfburn single malt. It has been bottled at 46% after just three years in Ex-Bourbon and Ex-Sherry quarter casks which previously held Islay whiskies. The early reviews are pretty good, considering the spirit is still young, just 3 years old. $85

In May of 2011 a team went in search of the long lost distillery of Wolfburn, which closed for ever some 150 years ago. Nothing of the original distillery survived except the cold clean water they used to produce their spirit. The following year, again in May, work began to rebuild what would supplant Old Pulteney as the northernmost mainland distillery. Construction was completed with impressive speed in just 7 months, and on Robbie Burns Day 2013 (January 25th) spirit began to flow off the stills for the first time.

Although the original Wolfburn was in its heyday one of the largest distilleries in the Highlands, all of the whisky it produced would have been consumed in the surrounding area, and there are no surviving bottles or traces of its whisky. The owners of the new Wolfburn distillery have a blank slate from which to craft the new whisky. At the moment they are primarily producing unpeated malt.

Tasting Note by Serge at whiskyfun.org 85pts: “The very first official whisky by Thurso’s Wolfburn Distillery! Some trustworthy sources say they’ve bottled no less than 62.000 bottles of this new baby, that’ll be out a little later this month. It’s a 3 years old, obviously. We already tried a 20 month old last year, and found it good. Colour: white wine. Nose: Very fresh, with white asparagus and green apples (not the other way ’round), then a welcome touch of ink, ‘new magazine’, a smidgen of curry and caraway, and damp chalk. That’s all very nice, it seems that there’s some texture. That was the case with the 20 mo, but that one was ex-Islay cask. No roughness in this genuine whisky. Mouth: there’s an unexpected smokiness in the arrival, some branches and grass, a touch of blond tobacco, a little pepper, traces of soot, and again, maybe, some sweet white asparagus (which I simply adore). At the fruit department, rather plums than pears. Ripe greengages, I’d say. Very nice texture, slightly oily. Finish: medium, fresh, with fresh almonds and more greengages. Rather pink grapefruits in the aftertaste. Comments: thank you Alexander aus Aarau in der Schweiz! I find this little baby extremely good, and am so pleased that they didn’t decide to bury it under various heavy oaks and wines. The natural ones will win! Worth a very high score in my book, despite its very young age. SGP:551 – 85 points.”

Whisky Advocate Tasting Note 83pts: “The first release from Wolfburn distillery is 3 years old. Matured in a mix of Spanish and American oak quarter casks previously used by an Islay distillery. The nose is soft and belies its youth, offering vanilla, lemon, ginger, and light smoke. The early palate is grassy. Sweeter fruit notes soon develop with more vanilla and ginger, plus white pepper. The finish is quite long and slightly smoky. Much to look forward to as this ages!” (Summer 2016) Reviewed by: Gavin Smith

Introducing Glengoyne 25 Year

The best new 25 year old on the market, and amazing value!

From the Distillery: “Matured exclusively in hand-selected sherry casks for a quarter of a century, this unique malt is an important addition to the Glengoyne collection. This bright amber beauty has red fruits, leather and brown sugar on the nose and soft oak, cinnamon, stewed fruits and a Seville marmalade tang on the palate. The finish is very long with spicy liquorice.

“The malt is presented in a new heavy bespoke bottle and outer box. The bottle features a fine metal stopper, crafted cartouche and delicately branded neck tag and is attractively displayed in an oak box interior which includes an engraved plinth. The elegant exterior has a refined feather pattern subtly varnished on the pack.”

Glengoyne 25 Year – 48% – Matured in Ex-Sherry – Andrew’s Tasting Note: “Nose: muscular but restrained sherry tones, Christmas cake, baker’s chocolate, dark fruits and spices with soft leather and tobacco; as you settle into it some hints of more tropical fruits emerge with cloves, a faint whiff of smoke and Dutch licorice. Palate: big, round and fruity, loads more Christmas cake and dark fruits, bakers chocolate and dark-chocolate caramel sea salt tarts (the kind Rebecca of the old Nectar Desert bar in Inglewood used to make); layers of fruit flavoured Jelly Bellies and Jujubes, soft new leather tobacco pouches, cedar shavings and firm toaste oak; bright Seville oranges and Pedro Ximenez sherry. Finish: medium-long, rich, fruity and coating with caramels and chocolate; the leather, tobacco and spices linger longest. Comment: wow, best whisky I’ve tasted this week, can’t wait to get more (ETA October), this does not disappoint! – $409.99

91pts Serge at whiskyfun.org : “All ex-sherry, so we may expect something bold. Colour: deep amber. Nose: old style, old quality, this is good oldness. It is a rather smoky sherry, with some burnt matches and quite some used gunpowder, and I firmly believe those noses are assets to this style. Then our famous Christmas cakes, dried figs and raisins, the slightest touch of ginger and caraway, certainly cloves and oranges, tobacco, some black nougat, some chocolate, whiffs of mint… So yes, this is super-classic sherried malt whisky. Some Macallans of old spring to my mind. Mouth: 48% is a strength that works very well. It’s less smooth and rounded than expected – but I wouldn’t say it’s brutal of course – and rather on dark chocolate, coffee, and bitter oranges. A touch of Schweppes as well, quinine, then not-too-sweet black raisins and our beloved Christmas cake yet again. The ginger and nutmeg in the background hint at some pretty active oak. Finish: long and very chocolaty. More spicy marmalade in the aftertaste. Comments: a rich yet balanced baby, impeccable. Not many distilleries are still making this style in relatively  large batches (I’m looking at you, M.!) SGP:562 – 91 points.”

Ardbeg Coming & Going

As Dark Cove sells out, Perpetuum makes a surprising but limited return!

We are down to just a handful of bottles the new Ardbeg Dark Cove, but we’ve also just received some Ardbeg Perpetuum… Last year’s 200th Anniversary bottling. Get em while you can!

  1. Ardbeg Dark Cove – 46.5% – Distiller’s Tasting Note: “Nose:  At first meaty, earthy and spicy. Bold notes of dark chocolate emerge against orange, rich treacle toffee, coffee and oak. Wafts of a distant, smoky bonfire in the background, along with a mysterious floral note, like flowering blackcurrant bushes. And lashings of linseed oil. Taste: The mouthfeel is almost tart, or zesty lime. Raisins, dates, ginger and pepper spice surge forward, then retreat. Waves of smouldering charcoal, wood polish and huge, tarry creosote notes follow. Finally a more savoury note escapes; cured smoked ham and squid ink noodles. Finish: Long, spicy and rich with lingering notes of toffee, coffee and tar.” – $134.99
  2. Ardbeg Perpetuum 200th Anniversary – 47.4% – My Tasting Note: “Nose:  decadent and creamy, floral peat, slightly burnt bacon and saline solution with creme brule and tangerines; a curious balance of vanilla, licorice and smoldering cedar shavings. Palate: very honeyed and creamy, some gentle oily-earthy peat, bacon dipped in maple syrup, barley sugars and more creme brule; the licorice note is still there with some darker fruits and spices; I still find the tangerine but with Five Alive fruit punch and a building salty maritime tarryness. Finish: long, coating and very soft for such a peaty maritime dram; the final flourish is oily and sweet with heathery floral overtones.” – $134.99
