Kilchoman Distillery Tasting & Bottle Signing September 28th, 2016 Federal Boston – Scotch Whisky News

Kilchoman Distillery

Tasting and Bottle Signing

Wednesday, September 28th.  2:30 P.M.  –  3:45 P.M.

This Wednesday will be a very special single malt tasting with the owner of Islay’s small farm distillery, Kilchoman, and his two sons. Anthony Wills and sons James and Peter will be in the store pouring some of Kilchoman’s wonderful smoky malts and signing bottles. Kilchoman is a farm distillery that produces whisky truly from grain to glass — they grow barley; malt their own barley; ferment, distill, and mature all at the farm on Islay; and even reduce the whisky from cask-strength down to bottling-proof with water from a spring right there on the farm-land. This is old school distilling and it’s being done so well; everything they bottle is always splendid. We would like to have a good turn-out and give the Wills Family a nice welcome to Boston and show them the support they deserve.

Unique sea journey recalls bravery of single malt’s earliest distillers – Scotch Whisky News

Unique sea journey recalls bravery of single malt’s earliest distillers

Atlantic row marks finale of the world’s most daring whisky challenge

Competitors in the world’s most daring whisky challenge yesterday recalled the bravery of Ardbeg’s earliest distillers. With casks of Ardbeg’s award-winning single malt nestled in traditional wooden skiffs (boats), they set off into the Atlantic from the whisky’s remote Scottish island home of Islay, just as the original distillers might have done. The gruelling row, in driving wind and rain, was the finale of the Ultimate Ardbeg ARDventurer Challenge, which brings to life the untamed spirit of Ardbeg, the world’s smokiest, peatiest Islay malt whisky.

The Ultimate Ardbeg ARDventurer Challenge has taken ten contestants from around the globe on an odyssey into essential Islay, as they vied to become the Ultimate ARDventurer. A triumphant winner was declared at the end of their three-day quest over the rugged coastline, wild peat bogs, mist-capped hills and brooding lochs, which inspire Ardbeg’s whisky.

Throughout its 200-year history, the Ardbeg Distillery has depended on the sea to transport its renowned single malt beyond the island’s shores. In bygone days, distillers are thought to have rowed casks to sea to meet small ships, which would spirit the whisky away to the mainland. Yesterday, as the contestants’ odyssey came to the end, they followed in the wake of the original Ardbeggians, by transporting a cask of Ardbeg through the perilous waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Last night, Keishi Iwata, of GQ Japan, was named the Ultimate Ardbeg ARDventurer, chosen for the title from ten ARDventurers from countries including Canada, Germany, the UK, U.S. and Sweden. He had been ranked alongside his fellow contestants for Ardbeggian qualities such as survival spirit, endurance and resourcefulness, by the ARDventurer hosts, including Mickey Heads – Ardbeg’s Distillery Manager – and survival expert Monty Halls. The ARDventurers’ challenge had begun with an apprenticeship at the Distillery and an arduous trek to Ardbeg’s water source Loch Uigeadail. They camped at the loch, then spent a day cutting the peat which lends The Ultimate Islay Malt its smoky character, before camping again and then embarking on their challenging row.

Mickey Heads said: “Keishi really is our Ultimate Ardbeg ARDventurer. He went about things in his own quiet way, but he has really embodied Ardbeg’s spirit. Keishi was more than a match for Islay’s untamed landscape. He never complained and one night cooked singlehandedly for 16 in camp. Even more impressive, he must have been the only ARDventurer not to have fallen in a bog…”

Nicknamed ‘The Nose’ for his exceptional ability to assess and understand the structure of whiskies through smell alone, Richard’s charismatic and energetic approach to illuminating the art of whisky making has earned him a legion of fans and a celebrity status amongst whisky lovers the world over.

At the 2013 World Whisky Awards, he was recognised by Whisky Magazine with an Icons of Whisky Lifetime Achievement Award and entered into the magazine’s Hall of Fame – a permanent tribute honouring those noteworthy individuals who have made a lasting contribution to the world of whisky.

Notes:

The Dalmore is the definitive luxury malt, since 1839.

Founded by Sir Alexander Matheson, a restless entrepreneur and international businessman, The Dalmore was born with a different purpose, to go above and beyond to create luxurious single malt whisky unlike any other.

An unbroken chain of exceptional whisky makers have been fulfilling Sir Alexander’s vision ever since, pioneering both aged single malt, and also multi cask maturation over 100 years before this was commonly adopted by others in the industry.

Richard Paterson has been Master Distiller at The Dalmore for nearly 50 years.  The whiskies he has created during his tenure have help Richard to achieve global celebrity status.  He is the man who, with The Dalmore, created the category of super luxury single malt, a category he continues to define to this very day.

Premium Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky, anCnoc has announced it is set to release its first ever single cask bottling to mark 60 years of French whisky specialists La Maison du Whisky.

The exclusive liquid will officially become available at Whisky Live Paris on 24th-26th September to celebrate the role of the country’s largest rare whisky retailer in the evolution of the French market for premium whiskies.

Matured for over 11 years in first-fill American oak ex-bourbon barrel number 427, anCnoc 2005 is rose gold in appearance and has a unique and complex character. To taste, flavour notes include thick smoke on grated lemon peel and summer fruit salad. Honey and vanilla balance this out, eventually revealing spicy ginger. The finish is a combination of fruit and smoke; powerful and long-lasting.

anCnoc Brand Manager Stephanie Allison said: There are only a few hundred bottles available of this single cask which our distillery manager Gordon has carefully selected for its exceptional flavour. This is the first time anCnoc has released a single cask – and what better reason than to commemorate this landmark anniversary for La Maison du Whisky.”
