Hat-trick of award nominations for William Grant and Sons as Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival Whisky Awards first round judging takes place

William Grant and Sons has impressed an expert panel gathered to shortlist entries in the 2016 Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival Whisky Awards. The Glenfiddich 12, 18 and 21 year old expressions were shortlisted in all three of the award’s categories following a blind taste test on Speyside this week.

The judges – made up from a panel of eight industry experts – also put single malts from Glen Grant, Glen Moray and Cragganmore distilleries through to the final round.

The winner of each category is determined by visitors to annual five-day Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, which takes place in venues across the drink’s spiritual home from April 28 to May 2. It’s the only awards scheme in the world where winners are determined by members of the public.

The six finalists were selected by judges out of 34 entries from distilleries across the Speyside region. The Glenfiddich 12 year old and Glen Grant’s 10 year old were selected for the malts under 12 – or no age statement – category. The finalists chosen for the 13 to 20 years section are the Glen Moray 16 year old and Glenfiddich 18 year old, while the category for malts over 21 is a head to head between Glenfiddich’s 21 year old and the Cragganmore 25 year old 2014 Special Release.

The awards are sponsored by Forsyths of Rothes – the coppersmiths responsible for building many of the pot stills in which the shortlisted single malts were distilled. The panel included a range of specialist whisky writers, connoisseurs and retailers.

Becky Paskin, editor of whisky website scotchwhisky.com, joined the panel for the first time. She says, “The traditional perception of Speyside whiskies is that they are all light and fruity in style, but this notion is outdated. If there’s one thing the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival Whisky Awards demonstrates, it’s that as well as owning the greatest concentration of whisky distilleries in Scotland, Speyside is also home the broadest palette of flavours.

“Among the entrants in this year’s awards were heavily Sherried and spicy beauties, sweet yet peaty malts and even some intriguing wine cask finishes, all of which challenge the opinion of how a typical Speyside whisky should taste. If ever there was a whisky category offering something for everyone, this would be it.”

Renowned whisky aficionado and writer Martine Nouet has served on the panel many times in the past, but says she always comes away surprised at the range of malts on offer. “I have taken part in the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival Whisky Awards judging since its beginning and every year, I am amazed at the growing diversity of aromatic profiles expressed by the whiskies in competition.

“This year, I found that the category 12 and under was the most challenging, with many younger whiskies than previously presented and more cask finishes. It is interesting to note that the finalist this year is the longest established single malt in Speyside. Tradition rubs shoulders with innovation, which results in offering whisky lovers a larger choice of styles and aromatic profiles. Wonders never cease,” she says.

Chairman of the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, James Campbell, adds, “The judging process resulted in a lot of different opinions; the general consensus of the group wasn’t uniform across the board, which I think reflects the personal preferences and tastes of whisky drinkers everywhere. There was a lot of conversation happening throughout and many of the judges surprised themselves when scoring the malts, which is a testament to the blind tasting session.”

The final judging session and awards prize-giving will take place at a ceilidh on Sunday, May 1.

Hunter Laing & Co. FAMILY to build new distillery on Islay 

Island’s whisky-making prowess to strengthen with £8m investment 

Whisky entrepreneurs Andrew and Scott Laing, along with their father, Stewart, today reveal plans for Islay’s first new distillery in a decade. An application has been submitted with Argyll and Bute Council to build the new malt whisky distillery at Ardnahoe, on the North East coast of the island. Should permission be granted for the £8m project, land currently owned by Islay Estates will be transferred to the whisky company.

Since Hunter Laing & Co. began operating in May 2013, the highly successful independent bottler and blender has been investigating the opportunities for owning its own distillery. After extensive work, the family pinpointed the four-acre site near Port Askaig as the only viable option to meet the needs for their expanding business. Subject to approvals, the new distillery is expected to see the first drop flow from their stills by the end of 2017.

Commenting on the plans, Andrew Laing, Director, said: “We have shown formidable growth in the last two years and the time is now right for us to invest for the future. While this is our family’s first foray into distilling, my father’s 50 year record of blending quality products of high demand and our three generations of expertise in the whisky industry ensures we enter this venture with strong confidence.”

Adding his thoughts, Scott Laing, Director, said: “Our family has had a long affiliation with Islay and my father spent time in the early part of his career at Bruichladdich Distillery. The opportunity to bring fresh investment to the island, create jobs and provide a new chapter in Islay’s illustrious whisky-making history is tremendously exciting for all of us.”

The building of the distillery is planned in two phases, with the first seeing the establishment of distilling operations, warehousing and a visitor centre comprising of a café, tasting room and shop. The second will see an expansion of distilling operations and further warehousing. Contractors for the build have been identified and will begin cutting turf in May 2016, pending approval. The distillery will create several full-time positions on the island, as well as a number of seasonal roles.  Lord Margadale, Chairman of Islay Estates, said: “We are thrilled to be working with Hunter Laing in the development of a new distillery on Islay. This project will contribute considerably to the island’s economy through the direct provision of jobs, it will also increase the demand for barley from Islay farmers and add to the attraction of Islay as a destination for the increasing number of followers of Scotch whisky around the world. Islay is a beautiful, tranquil and fertile island that is famed for its distinctive whisky; this is an exciting opportunity to build on this reputation and to help secure a strong economic future for the Island.”

Remarking on the opportunity, Stewart Laing, Managing Director, said: “The surge in demand for single malt Scotch whisky from Islay in recent years has been extraordinary. While the established distilleries on the island have been increasing production, there is obvious room for yet further expansion in output as discerning drinkers the world over are charmed by the rich, smoke-filled flavours that have become such an integral part of the island’s style of whisky. The new facility is being designed to create a particular style of spirit that we know from our experience of selling whisky in 65 countries around the world will appeal to the Islay whisky lover. By building this distillery, we are fulfilling a long held dream. ”

Now the application has been submitted to the council, a 21-day public consultation period will begin.

Macallan Robert Burns Semiquincentenary Speyside single malt Scotch whiskey.

A very highly prized Macallan decanter released to coincide with Homecoming Scotland 2009 marking the 250th anniversary of Robert Burn’s birth. The whisky is a mix of two casks one each from 1997 and 1998 with identical cask numbers #1759 (the year of Burn’s birth).

The presentation box is made from Scottish red pine and includes a Burns poem unique to the individual bottle.

Limited release of 250 bottles which were only available to visitors at the distillery shop.

No tasting notes at present.

The Macallan

The Macallan Distillery was established by Alexander Reid in 1824 near Easter Elchies House on the Easter Elchies estate. Easter Elchies House dates back to 1700. Macallan Distillery is a malt whisky distillery situated in Scotland’s Speyside whisky region. The old still house was re-commissioned in 2008 and now Macallan Distillery operates with two still houses sheltering twenty-one copper stills. On-site maturation is carried out in traditional dunnage warehouses and by racking in large new warehouses on the estate. The Macallan visitor centre welcomes visitors throughout the year and offers distillery tours. The Macallan Distillery also participates in the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival.

It’s a hugely exciting moment for Wolfburn and for all our followers around the world – and we would like to say a heartfelt thank you for all the compliments and words of encouragement over the past 36 months; at times we have been almost overwhelmed with support and comradeship. Tawny Port Finish: $105/btl

Glendronach 15 year old Tawny Port finish continues the new distillery owner’s plans of taking the bourbon-matured whisky in line with their idea of the traditional taste of Glendronach. This bottling has spent the last few years aging in Tawny Port casks, picking up lovely red fruit flavors.  NOSE: Stewed plum, raisins/sultanas, and fine chocolate provide lovely depth and structure. PALATE: Fruit shortcake drenched in vanilla custard, with hints of dried figs, dates and wild strawberries. Smooth tannins and light acidity highlight a wonderfully long finish.

Glenfiddich 14 Year Old ~
Bourbon Barrel – U.S Exclusive:
$80/btl

Malt Master, Brian Kinsman patiently waits for 14 years as this whisky matures in ex-bourbon American Oak casks, then finishes the whisky in deep charred new American Oak barrels supplied by The Kelvin Cooperage in Louisville, KY. The result is a rich, sweet and vibrant single malt hat delivers beautifully complex flavors of woody spices combined with ripe summer fruit, resulting from the spirit’s interaction with the casks.  NOSE: Deep vibrant vanilla notes with hints of citrus, caramelized brown sugar and cinnamon. Baked apple and ripe summer fruits and balanced with the rich oaky aromas. PALATE: Beautifully rich and sweet with layers of creamy toffee, woody spices, candied orange peel and fresh toasted oak.

Stoll & Wolfe American Whiskey: $62/btl

Commemorating local distilling traditions dating back to 1753; this blend of American Whiskey represents collaboration across generations and traditions to preserve the history and future legacy of Pennsylvania Craft Whiskey. Casks were selected and blended by Dick Stoll, trained by C. Everett Beam, and recognized as the distiller of AH Hirsch bourbon in 1974. Batch 1 of Stoll & Wolfe is a blend of 2 1/2 year MGP* Bourbon (75% Corn, 21% Rye, 4% Malt) and 2 year Straight Rye Whiskey from Death’s Door Distillery.

Highland Park ‘Freya’ Valhalla Series Collection: $310/btl

For the third release in the acclaimed Valhalla Collection, Highland Park has turned its attention to the mesmerising Norse Goddess of Love, “Freya”.  Freya’s feisty personality has inspired a full, rich and complex single malt with a lingering beguiling finish.
Tasting Notes: NOSE = Almond and Madagascan vanilla. White chocolate followed by candied cherries makes way for a vibrant wave of mango and melon, riding upon a cloud of cream soda.  PALATE = Orange peel, butterscotch and rose petals provide the sweetness along with orange blossom and ginger. Lively popping candy, lemongrass and tropical fruits are lightly shrouded in peat smoke. FINISH = Complex and beautiful, the finish gives lingering spice and soft peat smoke intertwined with soft orchard fruits, toasted coconut and a light char.

Metze’s Select Limited Edition Straight Bourbon ~ 2015 Medley: $77/btl – Limited availability

Although the MGP Distillery in Lawrenceburg, IN is relatively unknown. Many whiskey circles recognize MGP as ‘the’ chief supplier of white label product for brands including Angel’s Envy, Bulleit, High West and Smooth Ambler. Greg Metze has been the master distiller at MGP Distillery and an employee of the Lawrenceburg, IN facility since 1978. His ‘Metze’s Select Indiana Straight Bourbon Whiskey 2015 Medley’ is crafted from a blend of three high-rye bourbons distilled at MGP (38% bourbon distilled in 2006 with 21% rye, 3% bourbon distilled in 2006 with 36% rye, and 59% bourbon distilled in 2008 with 21% rye).

As a result, this ‘Medley’ has a nose of both sweet and spicy notes, highlighting caramel, vanilla, cinnamon and hazelnut. The palate is creamy and smooth, with hints of apple pie and breakfast cereal. The finish is accented by amaretto and crumb cake.
Bottled at 93 proof and limited to just 6,000 bottles worldwide.

Old Potrero: 18th Century Rye: $90/btl ~ Limited availability

This spirit represents Anchor Brewing Company’s attempt to re-create the original whiskey of America. 18th Century is distilled in a small copper pot still at Anchor’s distillery on San Francisco’s Potrero Hill, from a mash of 100% rye malt. Aging in handmade oak barrels–lightly toasted in the traditional manner–imparts a wonderfully subtle flavor to this 18th-century-style American whiskey. (In the 18th century, barrels were made by heating the staves over a fire of oak chips, allowing them to be bent and formed into a barrel shape. During this process, the inside of the barrel would become toasted- not charred.) For aging, Anchor chose several uncharred oak barrels-both new and used to achieve the balanced complexity that complements this whiskey’s unique heritage.

Scapa ‘Skiren’: $100/btl

Scapa Skiren is a honey’d single malt which has been distilled in the whisky industry’s only remaining working Lomond Still. It was matured in first fill American oak casks, bringing plenty of vanilla and honey notes to the table. Its name comes from the Old Norse word for “glittering bright skies”. Nose = Raw honey and fresh cream. Hints of apple, a touch of anise and some crushed nuts.  Palate = More honey warmth and fruit salad  richness. Sparks of juicy pear and light vanilla. Touches of oak develop further on, bringing some balancing spice. Finish = Medium length and a bit sweet, with the oak carrying through.

Kavalan Sherry Oak:
$185/btl ~ Very limited availability

Kavalan Sherry Cask Taiwanese Single Malt Whisky is made entirely in Taiwan from malted barley that is imported from Scotland. Following fermentation, the wash is distilled through lantern-shaped copper-pot stills that were previously used at the Glenlivet Distillery. Due to the small size and shape of the stills, the whisky interacts with the copper, resulting in an incredibly pure and fruity flavor profile. After distillation, it is aged for approximately three years in ex-sherry casks and bottled at cask strength. The whisky has an aroma of red fruits, sherry and oak, along with notes of fresh tobacco, chewy leather and spice cake on the palate. The finish is thick and intense, bringing citrus, cloves and ginger flavors.
