National Museums Scotland to expand the Glenmorangie Research Project

AHRC awards major grant to National Museums Scotland to expand on the ambitious Glenmorangie Research Project

The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) has awarded National Museums Scotland funding to investigate the vital role silver played in Early Medieval Europe (AD 300–900). The AHRC is a public body which funds world-leading research on the arts and humanities at UK universities and research organisations.

The grant will facilitate the creation of an international network of scholars who will examine how different strategies towards silver shaped the development of early medieval kingdoms in Europe. This will complement the existing Glenmorangie Research Project’s work on the importance of silver within Early Medieval Scotland, which the AHRC has credited as being of the ‘highest level’.

In addition, the funding will support two expert symposia in the UK and Germany, and the publication of an academic book of the resulting research. There will also be an opportunity to come to a public day conference at the National Museum of Scotland in 2017 to hear about the network’s findings.

The Glenmorangie Research Project is a pioneering multi award-winning cultural partnership between The Glenmorangie Company and National Museums Scotland, supporting the study and understanding of Early Medieval Scotland.

Alice Blackwell, Glenmorangie Research Fellow, National Museums Scotland, said: “Thanks to this AHRC award and the long-term support of The Glenmorangie Company we have a fantastic opportunity to forge new connections with academics and museum professionals across Europe and to situate our research on the significance of silver in the development of Early Medieval Scotland in its international context.

We are very excited to be collaborating with the network’s co-investigator Dr Andreas Rau, from the Centre for Baltic and Scandinavian Archaeology at the Stiftung Schleswig-Holsteinische Landesmuseen in Germany.

The network will enable us for the first time to compare strategies towards the supply, circulation and use of silver following the collapse of the Roman Empire and to explore the role of this precious metal in the emergence of the Early Medieval kingdoms of Europe.”

Hamish Torrie, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility, The Glenmorangie Company, said: “Glenmorangie places huge importance on its roots and through our long-standing partnership with National Museums Scotland we are learning more and more about Early Medieval Scotland.

Since our partnership began in 2008 there have been a number of remarkable discoveries. We want to congratulate National Museums Scotland on receiving this grant, which will situate their ground-breaking research on the crucial role silver played in Scotland within its wider, European context.

We are delighted that this grant will help National Museums to forge new relationships with researchers and archaeologists across Europe.”

Russell’s Reserve “K&L Exclusive” Single Barrels – American Whiskey News

kl_logo_trans

Fresh off our late Summer visit to Kentucky, we’ve got two new K&L single barrel selections ready to go just in time for the holiday season. It’s no secret we’re big fans of the Kickin’ Chicken and getting the chance to go around with the legendary Jimmy Russell and pick barrels out of the Wild Turkey warehouse is an opportunity we’ll never pass on.

Russell’s Reserve “K&L Exclusive” Single Barrel #246 Kentucky Bourbon (750ml)$64.99 View

Barrel #246 is one of the more spicy and concentrated whiskies we’ve ever bottled from the Russells. Whereas most Wild Turkey whiskies have a mellow, toasted corn creaminess in their profile, this particular barrel showcases more of the wood. It’s full of pepper on the nose and palate, followed by an intense oakiness and more spice on the finish. Tasting it blind, I would have said this was from Heaven Hill rather than Wild Turkey. It has a rugged power and explosive spice from front the back and that’s something I associate more with Elijah Craig cask strength, but this is indeed a 55% ABV barrel of Russell’s Reserve. A damn good one, too. (David Driscoll, K&L Spirits Buyer)

Russell’s Reserve “K&L Exclusive” Single Barrel #3181 Kentucky Bourbon (750ml)$64.99 View

Barrel #3181 is a dialed up version of everything you love about the Russell’s Reserve whiskies: big Red Hot cinnamon spice, sweet oak up front, leaner on the palate, with a finish that brings more of that clove and baking spice we love so much in the Wild Turkey whiskies. Whereas barrel #246 was almost un-Turkey-like, this is quintessential Russell’s Reserve at 55% ABV. The finish is full of bold oaky notes that meld seamlessly with the spice and continue to increase in intensity for a good twenty seconds. For holiday drinking, this is quite the festive whiskey! (David Driscoll. K&L Spirits Buyer).

Students selected for first Chivas Brothers development bursary – Scotch Whisky News

Students selected for first Chivas Brothers development bursary

Three students have been awarded a total of £5,000 in funding towards further and higher education as part of a new national bursary scheme from Chivas Brothers, the Scotch whisky and premium gin business of Pernod Ricard.

Launched earlier this year, the Chivas Brothers Bursary has been developed to encourage further study and training amongst the company’s 1,600 employees in Scotland and England, as well as their families. Announced today, the successful recipients of the 2016 bursary are Laura Caban, an aspiring actor from Glasgow, Adam Donnelly, an aircraft engineering student from Paisley, and Mia Forbes, a classicist from Surrey.

Laura, whose grandfather works in engineering at Chivas Brothers’ Strathclyde distillery, has been awarded £2,000 towards a two-year BA Acting for Stage & Screen course in Edinburgh – delivered jointly by Edinburgh Napier and Queen Margaret universities. Adam, whose mother is a payroll analyst for Chivas Brothers in Paisley, has received a £1,000 grant to help cover the costs of studying Aircraft Engineering at Ayrshire College. Mia, whose father works in Chivas Brothers’ Hammersmith office, will be putting her £2,000 of funding towards the cost of an undergraduate degree in Classics at the University of Cambridge.

Anthony Schofield, Public Affairs Director at Chivas Brothers, says: “On behalf of everyone here at Chivas Brothers, I’d like to congratulate Laura, Adam and Mia on their bursary success. The standard of entries for the scheme’s opening year have set the bar incredibly high, which has served to make the final recipients’ achievement even more impressive. All three showed real drive and passion for their subjects in their applications, and we couldn’t be more proud to be supporting them as they take the next step in their studies.”

Introduced for the first time this year, the Chivas Brothers Bursary has been developed in partnership with the Scottish International Education Trust (SIET). The SIET was set up in 1971 to help talented men and women fulfil their personal and professional goals by providing them with grants to complete further study. The launch of the new bursary scheme makes it easier for employees and their families to apply for support from the SIET, with up to £5,000 a year on offer over the next three years.

The scheme’s introduction follows a £100,000 donation by Chivas Brothers to the SIET last year, and complements an ongoing employee development programme that has seen the company invest in professional training for its staff. Quality Analyst Stephen O’Neill, for example, has been able to take the next step in his career by studying for a Level 2 course in Packaging Technology, supported by the Chivas Brothers Employee Development team.

Anthony Schofield continues: “After seeing such compelling results with our internal staff development programme, we launched the Chivas Brothers Bursary to further engage and inspire our people, and to give back to the communities where we work. For us, this means continuing to foster a culture of empowerment, encouraging employees and their families to realise their ambitions and reach their full potential. We hope the bursary goes some way to doing just that for this year’s three recipients, and that it will continue to do so for the next two years of the scheme – and beyond.”

Chivas Brothers counts some of the world’s leading whisky and gin brands as part of its portfolio – including Chivas Regal, Ballantine’s, The Glenlivet, Royal Salute and Beefeater gin. It has opened the new bursary scheme to employees at all of its 32 sites, which span Orkney, Speyside, Central Scotland, Ayrshire, London and Plymouth.

Single Malts – Back In Stock/New Arrivals at K&L California – Scotch Whisky News

Single Malts – Back In Stock/New Arrivals

We’re gearing up for the big Thanksgiving push this week, but we didn’t want to leave you empty-handed without a few last minute selections for your holiday table. While I’ve exhausted our NorCal allocations, David OG grabbed a bit more Caol Ila and Clynelish to satisfy those of you who missed out last time around. We’ve also got a few new things from Macallan and Bunnahabhain to show you:

Caol Ila 12 Year Old Islay Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (3 bottle limit) $59.99 A very balanced Islay, with a flowery sweetness on the nose that gives as good as it gets against the insistent peat and salt. The peat increases on the palate, but once again the whisky counters with honey and bread dough to maintain equilibrium. Then come sweet spices that get more vibrant on the finish as they’re joined by smoked salmon. Blend drinkers should note that this is where Johnnie Walker gets much of its peat.

Clynelish 14 Year Old Single Malt Whisky (3 bottle limit) $52.99 A very balanced Islay, with a flowery sweetness on the nose that gives as good as it gets against the insistent peat and salt. The peat increases on the palate, but once again the whisky counters with honey and bread dough to maintain equilibrium. Then come sweet spices that get more vibrant on the finish as they’re joined by smoked salmon. Blend drinkers should note that this is where Johnnie Walker gets much of its peat.

Bunnahabhain 13 Year Old “Marsala Finish” Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) $79.99 This surprisingly supple new whisky from Bunnahabhain takes a standard distillery ten year old whisky and sees it another three years in used Marsala casks, the sweet and savory Italian wine from Italy. The result is a perfectly balanced single malt that offers equal parts honeyed, resinous, and fruity Bunnahabhain flavors with subtle accents of red berries, Port-like oxidized wine notes, and a salty finish. This is one of the best new Islay releases we’ve tasted this year for those who shy away from peat smoke.

Macallan “Edition No. 2” Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) $99.99 Edition No. is a collaboration between The Macallan Master Whisky Maker, Bob Dalgamo, and three cofounders of El Celler de Can Roca (Spain), twice voted best restaurant in the world. Drawn from European and American oak casks, this limited-edition expression combines flavors chosen by these four masters to reflect their distinctive personalities in the resulting whisky. Each of the four co-creators selected four different cask suppliers in Spain to materialize these flavors. By bringing together the art of whisky making with the creative culinary genius of the Roca brothers, this single malt surpasses the conventional norm and challenges expectations. The specific cask types selected are as follows: 1st-fill American oak Vasyma butts, 2nd-fill American oak Vasyma puncheons, 1st-fill European oak Tevasa butts, 1st-fill European oak José Miguel Martin puncheons, 1st-fill European oak Jose Miguel Martin hogsheads, 1st-fill European oak Diego Martin butts, 2nd-fill American oak Diego Martin hogsheads.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving! We’ll see you soon after.
