Wolfburn Distillery Launches “Aurora” Sherry Oak Expression – Scotch Whisky News

Wolfburn Distillery Launches “Aurora” Sherry Oak Expression

Wolfburn Distillery is today delighted to announce the launch of its second permanent whisky expression, Aurora. The new release is made from a combination of whisky matured in first-fill Spanish sherry casks and American ex-Bourbon casks.

“Aurora is a truly splendid malt,” commented Shane Fraser, distillery manager. “The sherry casks have done an excellent job, producing a really sweet and flavourful whisky. Combined with spirit matured in the ex-Bourbon casks, it makes for a deeper flavour and an incredibly smooth finish. We’re very confident that customers worldwide are going to love it.”

Aurora has been planned by Shane and his team since the inception of the distillery in 2012. Approximately one third of Wolfburn’s laydown is maturing in a combination of first and second-fill sherry casks, with the remainder in American oak (mainly ex-Bourbon casks). “All the casks are hand-selected,” states Shane. “That’s one of the joys of Wolfburn – we’re relatively small in scale, which means our attention to detail and quality control is second to none.”

Wolfburn’s first release was launched in February, to wide acclaim. 2016 sales have significantly exceeded expectations, with distribution now taking place in 21 countries worldwide. “It has been an amazing experience, seeing the brand take off like this,” says Shane. “We always had high hopes for our whisky but the reaction globally has been better than anyone forecast. It’s a great starting point for the business.”

ABOUT WOLFURN:

The original Wolfburn Distillery was founded just to the west of Thurso by William Smith in 1821. In its day it was one of the largest distilleries in Scotland, producing, according to HMRC records, 28,056 “gallons of proof spirit” in a single year. Taking its name from the stream that provided the water – the Wolf Burn – the distillery operated until the 1860s. The reasons for its closure are lost in time, but by the 1870s the newly produced Ordnance Survey maps showed it being in ruins.

In 2011 plans were laid to resurrect the old distillery. Construction began in mid-2012 and in January 2013 the new Wolfburn Distillery commenced production, thereby becoming the most northerly distillery on the Scottish mainland. Situated 350m from the site of the original distillery, the new Wolfburn operates in much the same way as the old: craftsmen use traditional methods to produce fine spirit, which is laid down in best quality oak casks to await the day when it is bottled as single malt scotch whisky. Wolfburn’s inaugural whisky was launched globally in February 2016.

Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Engraved

The highest standard is maintained when crafting and selecting Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel. In fact, just one out of every 100 barrels is set aside to mature in the highest reaches of the barrelhouses, where dramatic temperature changes cause the colour and taste to deepen further. The Distillery says “It’s not easy making a whiskey like Single Barrel. But easy never interested us in the first place.”

Each barrel is hand-selected for its one-of-a-kind flavour, robust taste, and notes of toasted oak, vanilla, and caramel.

BOX WHISKY 2ND STEP 02 – Swedish Whisky News

box_2ndstep02_facebook-cover_2048x1045-980x500

The Box Distillery is about to release their second expression of their 2nd step series. A total of just over 5000 bottles were produced and only 2000 for the international market. We are lucky to have acquired some of these great whiskies

After the 2nd step 01, Smoke, the time has come to take a closer look at how Box sherry casks have matured. Ever since the initial months, Box have been busy on-stream filling both bourbon and sherry casks.

The main parts of the used casks are old Oloroso Sherry casks that have seen a lot of use. Most of them have been manufactured in Spain. The Casks are either 111, 200 or 250 litres. Age is essential in order for sherry casks to fully mature, therefore Box have chosen to balance the 02 with 48% bourbon stored whisky that’s been matured in casks that have previously contained Jack Daniels.

This acts to soften and produce a more balanced maturity that combined with the sherry casks, results in a complex and tasty flavour where both fruity sherry and the sweetness from whisky form part of the experience. There is also 8.5% peated whisky to add that little bit of character.

To help promote the 2nd Step 02, Box have managed to find us the last 12 bottles of the 2nd Step 01. If you would like to purchase the two bottles, the smokey 01, and the sherry 02, please send us an email to sigrunwhisky@icloud.com and we will give you 10% off your purchase of both bottles.

Rich and creamy vanilla, ripe fruits and marzipan on the nose, thick and oily in the mouth with mellow fruit notes giving way to sweet liquorice and aniseed before a long smoky tingle on the finish.

Milroys of Soho launches new brand and four exclusive whiskies under its own label

Milroys of Soho, London’s oldest whisky specialist has unveiled its new branding – its first rebrand in more than 50 years – and has launched four exclusive new whiskies under this new label.

The four whiskies comprise three single cask editions from well-known distilleries, and one eight year-old exclusive Milroys blend. The single cask expressions are available exclusively at Milroys and are an Ardmore 2008, Glentauchers 2007 and Blair Athol 1988.

The launch of the brand and own-label whiskies from Milroys of Soho represents the next step in Milroys’ dedication to the knowledge and craft that go into making and selling the very best whisky.

They are a result of the team tirelessly trying hundreds of cask samples and settling on four whiskies that they are proud to put their name to.

The eight year-old blend (£29.95 tbc), exclusive to Milroys, is suited to anyone from whisky experts to first time drammers, and is made from a blend of scotch specially chosen by the team.

Nose: Rich and powerful dark fruits with hint of vanilla.

Palate: Initial sweetness is dominant. Notes of clotted cream are then apparent, followed by rich sultanas with a touch of kiln embers to finish.

Finish: Smooth with a good balance of European oak spice and sweet barley notes.

The Ardmore 2010 (£42.95 tbc) was bottled this year aged in an ex-Bourbon cask. With only 272 bottles available, this whisky is for fans of the Ardmore distillery.

Nose: Expect gentle smoke and earthy undertones, coupled with a soft caramel base and ripe tropical fruits.

Palate: Soft hint of salinity, gentle smoke with overtones of honey, sweet, earthy barley notes and vanilla.

Finish: Intense malty notes interplay with peat reek. The finish is semi-sweet with floral and smoky richness.

The Glentauchers 2008 (£52.95 tbc) bottled this year, aged in an ex-Vendamina Sherry cask is a rich and complex whisky and yet perfect for any whisky drinker. Only 769 bottles of the Glentauchers 2008 will be available.

Nose: Powerful nose reminiscent of Christmas. Think dried fruits and chocolate, with soft cloves.

Palate: Intense and powerful, fruit forward.

Finish: The initial fruit sweetness evolves to the spicy, chocolate notes seen on the nose. Lingering cinnamon spice.

Finally the Blair Athol 1988 (£124.95 tbc) bottled this year was aged in an ex-Bourbon cask and is an exceptionally special and rare whisky given its age and cask finish. Only 208 bottles of this whisky will be available.

Nose: Sourdough bread interplays with vanilla richness, there is a small hint of thyme when left to open in the glass.

Palate: Buttery orchard fruits, combined with savoury notes.

Finish: Creaminess is dominant with hints of green apples and pears, followed by a soft lemongrass undertone.

Milroys CEO, simo, comments:

‘We’re really proud to put our names to these four brilliant whiskies which are all distinguished and special in their own way. It’s not been an easy task but we think we have four whiskies that would suit anyone from a total novice to whisky expert.’

The new Milroys brand was created by branding and design agency Good, and will be reflected across a new-look store and shopfront for Milroys iconic Soho location; the four new whiskies, a brand new website, and all Milroys marketing materials.

The four new whiskies will be available from September 29th exclusively from Milroys of Soho’s Greek Street Shop and http://shop.milroys.co.uk/.

Milroys of Soho features a shop and tasting bar on the ground floor and basement 55 seat cocktail bar, known as The Vault.

IRISH DISTILLERS UNVEILS REDBREAST SHERRY FINISH LUSTAU EDITION – Irish Whiskey News

AA Redbreast
– A new twist on the sherry influenced pot still whiskey, thanks to an old friendship –

Redbreast has introduced a new, permanent expression to its decorated Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey family; Redbreast Lustau Edition. Finished in hand selected, first-fill sherry butts that are seasoned with Oloroso sherry from the prestigious Bodegas Lustau in Jerez, Spain, this release celebrates the iconic sherry influence found throughout the Redbreast range.

Matured initially in a combination of exceptional ex-Bourbon and ex-Oloroso sherry casks, Redbreast Lustau Edition has been wholly finished for one year in prized sherry butts from Bodegas Lustau in Jerez, the sherry capital of the world.

The result is a new interpretation of the signature Redbreast character with a distinctive twist; Redbreast Lustau Edition offers a nose of dark fruits, prunes and marzipan, a luxuriously rich and creamy texture on the palate with iconic Redbreast spices, and a long, sweet finish complemented by notes of Spanish oak and Oloroso sherry.

With a shared history and kinship for excellence, Redbreast Lustau Edition has been born out of the longstanding relationship between the Midleton Distillery, County Cork, and the unrivalled sherry house, Bodegas Lustau. The unique bond between these two houses was established decades ago, built upon mutual respect for craft production processes, tradition and camaraderie.

Crafted to the exacting standards of Midleton Head Blender, Billy Leighton, Redbreast Lustau Edition is a permanent addition to the Redbreast range. Bottled at 46% ABV and without chill-filtration, Redbreast Lustau Edition is available from this month at the following RRPs; Canada, $90; France, €65; Ireland, €69; and UK, £55. It will also be available in the United States from October 1st 2016, at RRP $69.

On the launch of Redbreast Lustau Edition, Leighton comments: “With Redbreast Lustau Edition we seized the opportunity to celebrate the iconic sherry influence on the Redbreast range, and to do this we turned to our old friends at Bodegas Lustau to source the finest Oloroso sherry casks in the world. I am honoured to be able to finally reveal Redbreast Lustau Edition to the world as it represents the mutual bond, based on our commitment to excellence in craftsmanship, which we have built over time with Bodegas Lustau. Language is no barrier to this marriage of Spanish and Irish craft, and the result is an exceptional new Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey that champions the iconic sherry influence of the Redbreast range, and I hope that whiskey drinkers the world over enjoy it.”

Brendan Buckley, Global Innovation & Prestige Whiskey Portfolio Director at Irish Distillers, adds: “We are delighted to introduce a fifth, permanent expression to the Redbreast range as it demonstrates the appetite among whiskey connoisseurs and spirits aficionados alike for new, innovative and diverse Irish Whiskey offerings. Since we re-launched the brand in 2011, it has gone from strength to strength and we are committed to spreading word of Redbreast around the world as the Irish Whiskey renaissance continues.

“Our work on Redbreast is part of a wider commitment from Irish Distillers to lead the revival of the quintessential Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey style and Irish Whiskey in general, to educate whiskey fans about the breadth and quality that the category has to offer.”

The Whisky Exchange “20 independent whisky bottlers you need to know” – Scotch Whisky News

AA TWE1

20 independent whisky bottlers you need to know

As soon as you look beyond the whiskies released by distilleries, there’s a whole new world out there – the world of independent bottlers.

Distilleries don’t own every cask of whisky hidden in the warehouses of Scotland. They might make the spirit, but as soon as it leaves the still, all bets are off. Distillers swap and sell both new spirit and casks of mature whisky, and behind the scenes there is a network of brokers who keep the whole process running.

The end result is that there are lots of other whisky companies out there, independent of the distilleries who made the whisky. Whether it’s single casks and small-batch single malts, whiskies that don’t show a distillery’s usual character, boutique blends and blended malts, grain whisky, or something that falls between the cracks, indies have something for you.

As I type, we have whiskies from about 70 independent bottlers on The Whisky Exchange website. Some are big names, some are smaller and many have disappeared over the years. Here are a few of the ones you shouldn’t miss:

ADELPHI

An independent bottler with a long history, able to trace its beginnings to the building of the Loch Katrine Adelphi distillery in Glasgow in 1826. By 1932, the distillery had ceased production and by 1971, it had been demolished – the Central Glasgow Mosque now sits on the site. However, the name was revived in 1993 and since then Adelphi has been bottling excellent whiskies. In 2014, it opened Ardnamurchan distillery, starting a new chapter in the company’s story.

AA TWE2

BERRY BROS & RUDD

Berry Brothers and Rudd, suppliers of wine and spirits to the Royal Family since the reign of George III

Berry’s, as it is more commonly known (much to the annoyance of the Rudds in the company), is the world’s oldest family-owned wine and spirits merchant. Founded by The Widow Bourne (there are no other records of her name) in 1698 as a grocer’s shop, the past three centuries have seen Berry’s grow to be one of the most respected drinks companies in the world. Along with the Berry’s Own Selection of single-casks and small batch whiskies, the company also own the Glenrothes brand.

CADENHEAD’S

Not only Scotland’s oldest independent bottler, but also the owner of a pair of distilleries: Springbank (producer of Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn) and Glengyle (producer of Kilkerran). While the company’s distilleries are better known, the recent well-priced independent bottlings are excellent, with older releases changing hands for thousands of pounds at auction.

DOUGLAS LAING and HUNTER LAING

Two halves of the same family which were, until recently united under the name Douglas Laing. Brothers Fred and Stewart Laing split the company in two when their children came of age – Fred and daughter Cara now lead Douglas Laing, and Stewart has been joined by his sons Scott and Andrew at Hunter Laing. They divided the company’s ranges between them, with Douglas Laing initially focusing on blended malts, including Islay-favourite Big Peat, and Hunter Laing on single casks, continuing the Old Malt Cask range. Since then, both companies have expanded their ranges, and have a host of great whiskies.

AA TWE3

GORDON & MACPHAIL

The shop were it all started – 58 South Street, Elgin

Maybe the most well-known independent whisky bottler, Gordon & MacPhail started out as a grocer in Elgin in Speyside in 1895. Now, still run by the family of one of the original employees, it bottles a huge number of whiskies every year – including the Connoisseurs Choice range – and owns nearby Benromach distillery. With some of the most impressive whisky in Scotland maturing in the company’s warehouses and the oldest whiskies ever bottled under in its portfolio, it’s always worth keeping an eye on G&M.

HIDDEN SPIRITS

A new Italian bottler, showing that indie scene is still thriving and there’s still space for a newbie. The company has only released a few bottles so far, but they’ve impressed us and we look forward to seeing what comes next.

IAN MACLEOD

You may not know the name Ian Macleod, but if you’re a fan of indies, you will have heard of the Chieftan’s bottlings – an extensive range of great whiskies. The company also owns Glengoyne and Tamdhu and is the blender of Smokehead and Isle of Skye.

AA TWE4

INTERTRADE, MOON IMPORT, SAMAROLI and SESTANTE

Glen Mhor 1978, Dunglass “The Animals”, Longrow 1973 and Ardbeg 13 – incredible whiskies

Four of the most famous Italian whisky importers of yesteryear. While Samaroli still continues, albeit in a much quieter fashion that in the past, the other three companies have now fallen by the wayside. However, bottles of whisky selected by them for the Italian market have an incredible reputation.

MACKILLOP’S CHOICE

A range of whiskies selected by Lorne Mackillop, heir to the chief of the Mackillop clan. While the clan was almost wiped out by the English in the 18th century, Lorne’s line continued and after years in the wine trade – and qualification as a Master of Wine – he now works for Angus Dundee, owner of Tomintoul distillery, and selects his favourite whiskies to be bottled with his name on the label.

MALTS OF SCOTLAND

Not to be confused with Single Malts of Scotland, MoS is a German bottler well known in mainland Europe for bottling interesting whiskies. It has recently started doing interesting things with American whiskies – Islay-cask-matured Heaven Hill, anybody? – which has put it firmly on our radar.

OLD BOTHWELL

While they’re still bottling whisky, Old Bothwell are best known for a series of well-priced and great tasting drams from Port Ellen, released just at the time that the market for whisky from the cult closed distillery exploded. You can still find a few of the company’s bottles in shops and at auction, but don’t expect them to be as cheap as the once were.

REST & BE THANKFUL

A relatively new independent bottler, founded by a former Bruichladdich sales manager. Thanks to close ties with the distillery, the company was able to release some of the first independently bottled Octomores and Port Charlottes, and has followed them up with more great whiskies.

AA SMWS Vaults3

SCOTCH MALT WHISKY SOCIETY

Founded by a group of whisky-loving friends in 1983, the SMWS has grown to be a worldwide members club. It releases new whiskies every month, formerly exclusively available to its members and now available to everyone, although non-members pay a hefty premium. With members rooms and partner bars around the world, the Society combines excellent whiskies with great places to drink them.

SIGNATORY

One of Signatory Vintage’s Edradour warehouses

Founded in 1988 by Andrew Symington, former manager of the Prestonfield House hotel in Edinburgh and master of its whiskies since the late 1960s. Signatory has continued Andrew’s reputation for consistently selecting and releasing excellent drams. These days, the company also owns Edradour distillery in Pitlochry, and you’re equally likely to find Andrew running the stills as you are to see him stalking around the warehouses choosing the next whiskies to bottle.

SPECIALITY DRINKS LTD

Our sister company and bottler of Port Askaig, Elements of Islay and Single Malts of Scotland, among others. The whiskies are selected by TWE director Sukhinder Singh and the SDL team, and are available around the world, including – if we can get our hands on a few bottles – from The Whisky Exchange.

WILSON AND MORGAN

Despite a very English-sounding name, Wilson and Morgan is an Italian bottler with a history stretching back to the early 20th century and the Rossis, a family of Venetian traders. The company branched out from wine and oil in the 1960s, and spun off the whisky business as Wilson and Morgan in the 1980s. It continues to bottle some excellent whiskies, thanks to long links to distillers and brokers in the UK.
