AA Glendronach

Glendronach 15 Year Old

Glendronach 15 year old Tawny Port finish continues the new distillery owner’s plans of taking the bourbon-matured whisky in line with their idea of the traditional taste of Glendronach. This bottling has spent the last few years aging in Tawny Port casks, picking up lovely red fruit flavors.  NOSE: Stewed plum, raisins/sultanas, and fine chocolate provide lovely depth and structure. PALATE: Fruit shortcake drenched in vanilla custard, with hints of dried figs, dates and wild strawberries. Smooth tannins and light acidity highlight a wonderfully long finish.

Glenfiddich 14 Year Old ~
Bourbon Barrel – U.S Exclusive:
$80/btl

Malt Master, Brian Kinsman patiently waits for 14 years as this whisky matures in ex-bourbon American Oak casks, then finishes the whisky in deep charred new American Oak barrels supplied by The Kelvin Cooperage in Louisville, KY. The result is a rich, sweet and vibrant single malt hat delivers beautifully complex flavors of woody spices combined with ripe summer fruit, resulting from the spirit’s interaction with the casks.  NOSE: Deep vibrant vanilla notes with hints of citrus, caramelized brown sugar and cinnamon. Baked apple and ripe summer fruits and balanced with the rich oaky aromas. PALATE: Beautifully rich and sweet with layers of creamy toffee, woody spices, candied orange peel and fresh toasted oak.

Stoll & Wolfe American Whiskey: $62/btl

Commemorating local distilling traditions dating back to 1753; this blend of American Whiskey represents collaboration across generations and traditions to preserve the history and future legacy of Pennsylvania Craft Whiskey. Casks were selected and blended by Dick Stoll, trained by C. Everett Beam, and recognized as the distiller of AH Hirsch bourbon in 1974. Batch 1 of Stoll & Wolfe is a blend of 2 1/2 year MGP* Bourbon (75% Corn, 21% Rye, 4% Malt) and 2 year Straight Rye Whiskey from Death’s Door Distillery.

Highland Park ‘Freya’ Valhalla Series Collection: $310/btl

For the third release in the acclaimed Valhalla Collection, Highland Park has turned its attention to the mesmerising Norse Goddess of Love, “Freya”.  Freya’s feisty personality has inspired a full, rich and complex single malt with a lingering beguiling finish.
Tasting Notes: NOSE = Almond and Madagascan vanilla. White chocolate followed by candied cherries makes way for a vibrant wave of mango and melon, riding upon a cloud of cream soda.  PALATE = Orange peel, butterscotch and rose petals provide the sweetness along with orange blossom and ginger. Lively popping candy, lemongrass and tropical fruits are lightly shrouded in peat smoke. FINISH = Complex and beautiful, the finish gives lingering spice and soft peat smoke intertwined with soft orchard fruits, toasted coconut and a light char.

Metze’s Select Limited Edition Straight Bourbon ~ 2015 Medley: $77/btl – Limited availability

Although the MGP Distillery in Lawrenceburg, IN is relatively unknown. Many whiskey circles recognize MGP as ‘the’ chief supplier of white label product for brands including Angel’s Envy, Bulleit, High West and Smooth Ambler. Greg Metze has been the master distiller at MGP Distillery and an employee of the Lawrenceburg, IN facility since 1978. His ‘Metze’s Select Indiana Straight Bourbon Whiskey 2015 Medley’ is crafted from a blend of three high-rye bourbons distilled at MGP (38% bourbon distilled in 2006 with 21% rye, 3% bourbon distilled in 2006 with 36% rye, and 59% bourbon distilled in 2008 with 21% rye).

As a result, this ‘Medley’ has a nose of both sweet and spicy notes, highlighting caramel, vanilla, cinnamon and hazelnut. The palate is creamy and smooth, with hints of apple pie and breakfast cereal. The finish is accented by amaretto and crumb cake.
Bottled at 93 proof and limited to just 6,000 bottles worldwide.

Old Potrero: 18th Century Rye: $90/btl ~ Limited availability

This spirit represents Anchor Brewing Company’s attempt to re-create the original whiskey of America. 18th Century is distilled in a small copper pot still at Anchor’s distillery on San Francisco’s Potrero Hill, from a mash of 100% rye malt. Aging in handmade oak barrels–lightly toasted in the traditional manner–imparts a wonderfully subtle flavor to this 18th-century-style American whiskey. (In the 18th century, barrels were made by heating the staves over a fire of oak chips, allowing them to be bent and formed into a barrel shape. During this process, the inside of the barrel would become toasted- not charred.) For aging, Anchor chose several uncharred oak barrels-both new and used to achieve the balanced complexity that complements this whiskey’s unique heritage.

Scapa ‘Skiren’: $100/btl

Scapa Skiren is a honey’d single malt which has been distilled in the whisky industry’s only remaining working Lomond Still. It was matured in first fill American oak casks, bringing plenty of vanilla and honey notes to the table. Its name comes from the Old Norse word for “glittering bright skies”. Nose = Raw honey and fresh cream. Hints of apple, a touch of anise and some crushed nuts.  Palate = More honey warmth and fruit salad  richness. Sparks of juicy pear and light vanilla. Touches of oak develop further on, bringing some balancing spice. Finish = Medium length and a bit sweet, with the oak carrying through.

Kavalan Sherry Oak:
$185/btl ~ Very limited availability

Kavalan Sherry Cask Taiwanese Single Malt Whisky is made entirely in Taiwan from malted barley that is imported from Scotland. Following fermentation, the wash is distilled through lantern-shaped copper-pot stills that were previously used at the Glenlivet Distillery. Due to the small size and shape of the stills, the whisky interacts with the copper, resulting in an incredibly pure and fruity flavor profile. After distillation, it is aged for approximately three years in ex-sherry casks and bottled at cask strength. The whisky has an aroma of red fruits, sherry and oak, along with notes of fresh tobacco, chewy leather and spice cake on the palate. The finish is thick and intense, bringing citrus, cloves and ginger flavors.

GLENMORANGIE MILSEAN SUMMONS SWEET SPLENDOUR 

The latest release in Glenmorangie’s Private Edition 

Glenmorangie Milsean is the first Glenmorangie expression to be extra-matured in heavily toasted Portuguese red wine casks. Milsean (Scots Gaelic for ‘sweet things’), the seventh release in the award-winning Private Edition collection, draws on the effect of charred wine casks, unlocking an unusual dimension in extra maturation.

Created from Glenmorangie first matured in ex-bourbon oak casks, Glenmorangie Milsean (pronounced ‘Meel-shawn’) then spent a number of years in casks which had contained Portuguese red wine.  Yet before they were used to create a Glenmorangie Private Edition, the casks were involved in a pioneering experiment by Dr Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie’s Director of Distilling and Whisky Creation.  Dr Bill arranged for the casks to be charred to enhance the sweeter notes of Glenmorangie, which created a whisky with such attractive hints of sweetness, that it has surpassed even his expectations.

Dr Bill Lumsden said: “A glass of Glenmorangie Milsean transports me straight to an old-fashioned sweet shop with its sweet and spicy bouquet, with hints of sugar cane, ripe fruits and fudge. Extra-maturing Glenmorangie in heavily toasted red wine casks for the first time, has allowed us to create a whisky recalling a bygone era.  I hope its deep tastes of cherries, angelica, candied orange peel and unusual intensity of caramelised fruits, will surprise and delight whisky aficionados and malt connoisseurs.”

Bottled at 46% ABV, and non-chill filtered for extra body and texture, Glenmorangie Milsean will be available from specialist whisky shops worldwide, including The Whisky Exchange, Soho’s Vintage House, Selfridges and Royal Mile Whiskies from 19th January 2016 at £75.99.

Milsean will also be available at Brown’s Hotel London, as part of the hotel’s 10-day whisky pop-up in the Library Bar. In partnership with Beretta, Brown’s Hotel will transform the Library Bar into a Gaelic haven. Open from 20th – 29th January (from 6pm every evening), the pop-up will feature a display of around 40 whiskies, including drams from Glenmorangie. There will also be a whisky sommelier on hand to help you choose the perfect tipple.

Glenmorangie Milsean is non chill-filtered and bottled at 46% ABV. Glenmorangie Milsean is a copper beech-coloured single malt, with a sweet and spicy bouquet containing hints of sugar cane, ripe fruits candy sweetness and buttery coconut. Its complex, sugar-coated tastes include tart plummy fruit, cherries and candied orange peel, while its finish features ginger, brown sugar and cake mix.

Extra-maturation:

Extra-maturation is a process pioneered by Glenmorangie.  Whisky is first matured in one type of cask (such as ex-bourbon), then is transferred into a different type of cask (such as ex-wine casks) where it spends additional years gaining further layers of flavour.  In the case of Glenmorangie Milsean, the wine casks were deeply toasted, to add a unique dimension to the whisky’s character.

Bowmore Distillery was established on the Isle of Islay off the west coast of Scotland by John Simpson in 1779. Situated in Bowmore by the shore of Loch Indaal it is the oldest working distillery on Islay and one of the oldest malt whisky distilleries in Scotland. Bowmore Distillery continues to produce a proportion of its malted barley on its own traditional malting floors and malt kilns. Visitors are welcomed in the Bowmore visitor centre where distillery tours are available in addition to Bowmore Distillery cottages to rent. An Ode to Laphroaig – Scotch Whisky News

With Burn’s Night just round the corner we wanted to share the latest in the Opinions Welcome series from Laphroaig, featuring poet Elvis McGonagall. The film is part of Laphroaig’s ongoing #OpinionsWelcome global campaign, gathering honest opinions about Laphroaig from friends and foe alike.

Entitled ‘An Ode Tae Laphroaig,’ the film features a poem written and performed by Elvis McGonagall, the award-winning Scottish poet, who is also a stand-up comedian and a poetry slam world champion. Rabbie Burns is famous for his odes to objects like haggis and mice, so an ode to Laphroaig seemed like an ideal accompaniment to any Burns Night celebration.

  • Four Roses K&L Exclusive OESK (9 years) Single Barrel Cask Strength Bourbon (750ml) ( $66.99) The second in a string of casks we purchased directly from Four Roses distillery in Kentucky this past Fall, this nine year old OESK formula Bourbon is one of the creamier whiskies we’ve tasted from the producer in some time. The nose is a continuous stream of pencil shavings, black pepper, and oak, but that spice turns into a warm and expansive wave of full-bodiedness with herbaceous flavors carrying through the undertow. This is an incredibly oaky Bourbon; “oak” in the sense of freshly cut wood and foresty notes, rather than toasted vanilla or creme brulee flavors we typically think off. It’s also quite peppery, but something about all that creaminess prevents the whiskey from ever drying out on the palate. It’s a whiskey that seem to glide over the tongue with weight, while simultaneously stimulating it with intense doses of pepperiness. In the wine world, we might call that the balance between fruit and acidity. In the case of this Bourbon, however, it’s a perfect yin and yang: texture combining with spice to create absolute pleasure. Only 140 bottles available.

Revamped website – DRINKiQ.com – to support consumers in making informed choices 

TUESDAY 19 JANUARY 2016: With the launch of its newly revised DRINKiQ.com, Diageo is advancing its commitment to give consumers greater transparency and help them to make more informed choices about alcohol. To this end, the company has significantly enhanced the nutrition, calorie and alcohol content information available about all its brands. This includes a breakdown of calories, carbohydrates and protein as well as, for the first time, detailing saturated fat, sugar, caffeine and sodium content.

Today’s announcement builds on Diageo’s global commitment in March 2015 to start voluntarily providing nutrition and alcohol content information per standardised serving on all its brands. In the first move to fulfil this commitment, the first shipment of Crown Royal labelled with macronutrient and calorie information was released in the US in October 2015.

This valuable new information is now available on its responsible drinking website DRINKiQ.com, offering information about low-calorie drinks at a time when more consumers are concerned with leading a balanced lifestyle following the festive period.

DRINKIQ.com includes useful new tools such as a simple to use ‘Drinks Calculator’, to help people calculate and track their alcohol and calorie intake. It also provides responsible drinking tips and advice on how food, age, size and gender affects how the body processes alcohol, alongside the enhanced ‘What’s in your Drink’ tool.

Carolyn Panzer, Alcohol in Society Director, Diageo said: “As people become more and more interested in their diet and lifestyle choices, we need to play our part. We know that consumers want nutritional information about what they drink – just as they do with the foods they eat; they also want a clear and easy way to know how much alcohol they are drinking. We believe passionately in helping people to understand what’s in their drink and to make informed choices about drinking or not drinking. Alcohol is alcohol. There is no drink of moderation – only a practice of moderation.”

Key features of the new site include:

  • An enhanced What’s In Your Drink section which details comprehensive nutritional, and alcohol content per serve information for all of Diageo’s brands, alongside ingredient information. This includes a breakdown of calories, carbohydrates and protein as well as, for the first time, detailing saturated fat, sugar, caffeine and sodium content.
  • A new, simple to use, Drinks Calculator to help consumers easily calculate and track the amount of alcohol they are drinking per serving and how many calories they have consumed for a range of common drinks, instead of expecting them to do the maths.
  • Tips on responsible drinking – including the chance to explore how food, age, size and gender affects how the body processes alcohol.                                                                                                          

The site also includes the truth behind common myths around alcohol consumption – such as:

  • “Spirits contain more alcohol than beer and wine”. In fact 25ml of distilled spirits (e.g. Smirnoff, Tanqueray) contains 1 unit of alcohol, versus over 2 units in a pint of lager. Spirits also have fewer calories than wine or beer – 25ml of distilled spirits has approximately 55 calories compared to 125 calories in an average 175ml  glass of wine or around 180 calories in a pint of lager.
    • “Eating food means I can drink more”. In fact eating food only slows down how quickly alcohol is absorbed – it does not prevent it from having an effect on the body.
    • “Drinking coffee sobers people up faster.” Coffee might make people feel more awake, but the alcohol still remains in the body and takes about one hour per one drink to process.

The new DRINKiQ.com is mobile-friendly and easy to use so that consumers can quickly access information about what’s in their favourite cocktail on their phone whenever they want.

The site is available in 24 countries and 12 languages, and has been designed to ensure content is tailored to the environment and regulation in the consumer’s location, particularly legal purchase age.

DRINKiQ.com was first introduced in 2008 when Diageo led the industry in launching a responsible drinking website.

Diageo’s decision to extend the nutritional information it provides is in response to consumer demand for more nutritional information about what they drink. For example:

  • Research from NewsCred in February 2015 demonstrates the consumer desire for information on balanced lifestyles.[1]
    • 47% of people in the UK have become more health conscious in the past 12 months
    • 76% of people in the UK say that brands now have a responsibility to provide consumers with health content
  •  27% of people in the UK say they feel informed regarding health issues
  • The Nielsen Global Health & Wellness Survey of 30,000 people in 60 countries found half (49%) of global respondents believe they are overweight, and half (50%) are trying to lose weight.[2]

It’s a new year and we’re excited to see what 2016 has in store not only for Whisky Auctioneer but also the wider world of whisky!

And the outlook does look bright with high global demand for single malts and premium blends looking set to continue in the coming months. Innovation and experimentation seem to be the buzz words for distilleries looking to set themselves apart from the competition and following their 2015 accolades, Irish and Canadian whiskies are primed for growth in 2016.

We have a host of bottles making their debut appearances in our first auction of the year, such as this Ardbeg 1815. Named in celebration of the year the distillery was founded, only 400 bottles were released in 2008. Taken from 1974 bourbon barrels and 1975 sherry butts this is one well aged and very rare whisky!

Awarded gold in the World Chocolate Awards in 2015, Iain Burnett the Highland Chocolatier has created a range of gourmet chocolates designed to be paired with Champagne and with whisky.

Created by hand to enhance the flavours of both the chocolate and the drinks, the range includes chocolates to accompany 46 whiskies and Champagnes.  It includes some developed in collaboration with some of Scotland’s best-known distilleries including Cardhu, Dalwhinnie, Dewars Aberfeldy, Glenfiddich, Knockando, Lagavulin, Talisker, Tobermory and Tullibardine.

Ideal for Valentine’s gifts for men and women, the chocolates are available from £14.95 for a box of nine chocolates with accompanying tasting notes.  The range includes:

  • White Lime and Chilli Velvet Truffle designed to accompany Laurent Perrier Demi-Sec or Ultra Brut
  • Strawberry and Star Anise Velvet Truffle to taste with Laurent Perrier Cuvée Rosé
  • Hand-dipped whole clementines candied over days to retain the fruit’s natural juices, dipped in 70% dark chocolate and expertly decorated by hand to complement Laurent Perrier Vintage 2004
  • Espresso Truffle (dark ganache infused with freshly ground espresso beans) to match Caol Ila 12 year old
  • Cinnamon Praline (Sweet hazelnut praline with a rich spice infusion of cinnamon with a hint of cloves) to pair Glenfiddich 18 year old
  • Lemongrass Praline (hazelnut praline infused with the fresh citrus of lemongrass enrobed in single origin 70% dark chocolate) to accompany Glenkinchie 12 year old

The chocolates contain no alcohol or preservatives but have been expertly paired in partnership with the Master Blenders of well-known Scottish distilleries and with Laurent Perrier. The result is a combination of carefully balanced flavours that complement the unique characteristics of each individual Scottish malt and Champagne; each really does enhance the other.

Based at Grandtully, Iain Burnett The Highland Chocolatier was founded in 2006 and is now Scotland’s most awarded chocolatier and one of the top three in the UK.  In 2015 it won worldwide acclaim at the International Chocolate Awards with their Velvet Truffle marked as The World’s Best Dark Chocolate Truffle.  It also won two further silvers for the Passion Fruit & Mango White Velvet Truffle and the Raspberry & Black Pepper Velvet Truffle.  The awards recognise the finest quality chocolate from around the world and reflect international tastes, offering a level playing field for chocolatiers worldwide.
