Highland Park Competition – win a bottle of Orcadian Vintage 1976 From The Whisky Exchange – Scotch Whisky News

hlpob_1976v1

With summer in the air here at TWE HQ, we think it’s time for a new competition. We’re big Highland Park fans and we’ve got a very special bottle to give away: Highland Park 1976 Orcadian Vintage.

The Highland Park Orcadian Vintages are an impressive range of whiskies, very limited releases that are increasingly hard to find. They range from the 1964, one of the oldest officially bottled Highland Parks ever released, through to the 1976, bottled at a comparatively sprightly 35 years old back at the end of 2011.

I was very fortunate enough to have a taste of the 1976 a couple of years back, and was very impressed.

HIGHLAND PARK 1976 ORCADIAN VINTAGE

Nose: Fruit skins, vanilla cream, milk chocolate, ground almonds and a hint of sea spray.

Palate: Soft to start, with a creamy mouthfeel. An initial burst of sweet apple turned slowly into mouth-puckering apple skins, with fruity caramel keeping things just sweet enough.

Finish: Long and lingering, with apples and custard, cinnamon fireball gobstoppers, nutmeg and a lingering hint of fruity Garibaldi biscuits.

Here’s what Gerry Tosh, then brand ambassador and now global marketing manager, had to say about the 1976:

It’s an impressive dram which sells for over £2,500 on the rare occasions that you can find it. We have a bottle, and we’re going to give it to one lucky Whisky Exchange customer.

All you need to do to be in with a chance of winning, is buy a bottle of Highland Park Dark Origins before 19 August 2015 and you will be automatically entered into the draw.

hlpob_non8

The Dark Origins appeared about a year ago and flew off the shelves, as you might expect a Highland Park fully matured in sherry casks to. About 80% of the whisky comes from first-fill casks and the majority of those are made from European oak, a combination that gives a huge sherried punch to the whisky. However, they then calm things down with a good dose of refill-sherry-cask-matured whisky, which adds a distinctly Highland Park character and lets their gently smoky spirit sing.

Nose: Sharp new leather and backbone of sweet raisins, with an Eccles-cake

richness, nutmeg, sharp clove notes, hints of charcoal and boot polish.

Palate: Bitter char at first, giving way to sweet raisins, wax polish and old armchairs. Orange and liquorice hints build behind damp bark, rich earth and gentle notes of green leaves.

Finish: Medium length, with dry raisins, anise and lingering salty liquorice.

Here’s what new global brand advocate, Daryl Haldane, reckons:

It’s a great dram in its own right, and the chance of winning a bottle of the 1976 makes it an even better prospect. For full details, head over to the competition page, but make sure to grab your bottle of Highland Park Dark Origins by 19 August 2015 to be in the draw.

You can find full details, including all of the competition rules, terms and conditions, on our Highland Park Orcadian Vintage prize draw page.

Officially Amazing – The Glenrothes Sets World Record Burns Supper – Scotch Whisky News

Officially Amazing – The Glenrothes sets world record Burns Supper

Lord Provost Sadie Docherty hosted a record-breaking Burns Supper this year at the city’s Thistle Hotel on Friday 23 January.

The annual charity fund raiser smashed the million pound mark and goes down in the record books with its own Guinness World Records title for the largest Burns Supper. The Glenrothes Single Malt sponsored the event and guests were given the opportunity to sample it’s latest expression, Vintage Reserve.

All monies raised on the night go to the Lord Provost’s Malawi Fund, the Lord Provost’s Charity Funds and Bobath Scotland, a Scottish charity devoted to improving the quality of life for children and adults with cerebral palsy.

Prior to the event, the Lord Provost said: “This event has raised more than £955,000 for charities since the council took it over from the former Strathclyde Region in 2003. I’m confident we’ll smash the million pound mark. I’m also delighted to reveal that a Guinness World Records adjudicator will be there as we bid to set the record for the largest Burns Supper.”

The Lord Provost was joined by broadcaster Paul Cooney, Former Managing Director of Capital FM who was the Master of Ceremonies for the evening and Natasha Raskin of McTears auctioneers who was helping  to ensure the evening went smoothly.

645 attended the supper where they were met by World Championship piper Jim Semple, a retired police officer and six time winner in Grade 1 with Strathclyde Police Pipe Band.

Headlining this year’s event was former River City actress Libby McArthur who played Gina in the popular BBC soap. She replied to the Toast to the Lassies.

Libby’s appearance follows her performance in ‘Mrs Barbour’s Daughter’ at Oran Mor as part of its series of A Play A Pie and A Pint runs.

The versatile actress, writer, columnist and director has a career that spans more than three decades. Roles include playing wife to Ford Kiernan and Andy Cameron, daughter to Miriam Margolyes, Annie Ross and Johnny Beattie; and sister to Andy Gray, Forbes Masson and Robert Carlyle.

The Toast to the Lassies was given by retired Glasgow lawyer Bill Copeland, renowned for his after dinner speaking.

Acclaimed singer and clarsach player Gillian Fleetwood made a return visit to the Burns Supper and there was also music and songs from up and coming Ayrshire teenager Laurie Withers.

Additional entertainment was provided by Musical Theatre students attending the Dance School of Scotland. Kathryn Ronney gave the address to the Haggis and Matthew Wilson recited two Burns poems.

The Whisky Exchange “Malt of the Month – Laphroaig 10 Year Old”

Malt of the Month – Laphroaig 10 Year Old

The Islay Festival may have finished weeks ago, but July’s Malt of the Month has been chosen to help those of us who went relive the visit and to give those who couldn’t go a slice of Islay.

It’s Laphroaig’s 200th anniversary in 2015 and they’re celebrating throughout the year with events and special releases. We’ve decided to join in for July, knocking £5 off bottles of their flagship whisky: Laphroaig 10 Year Old.

I’m not very good at hiding my obsession with whisky from the distillery, and I love the fruity, briny, smoky, medicinal flavour combination that they get into their spirit. The way they make their whisky has changed gradually over time, but the 10 Year Old has always been their core release, showing the key flavour profile they are producing.

AA TWE Laphroaig 1

Laphroaig 10 Year Old, 40%

Nose: Singed lemons, cresosote-painted fences and pink shrimp sweets. There’s wood smoke and sea spray, as well as sweetness – toffee and candied citrus peel.

Palate: Oily on the palate, with charcoal and coal stoves to start. It’s not as sweet as on the nose, with layers of smoke, brine and hints of smoked fish. The initial dryness gives way to some gently fruity notes, with waxy apples joined by candied lemon and bitter Seville orange.

Finish: Barrel char, cinnamon spice and hints of fruit. A bonfire sits on the tongue, slowly fading to sweet anise.

Comment: Not as fruity as some of the older bottles, focusing on the core Laphroaig medicinal character with wood smoke as backup. Intense, distinctive and definitely Laphroaig.

To invoke the cliché, it is a Marmite dram – some people love it, some hate it. However, as an entrance into the peatier end of Scotch single malt, it’s second to none, and has converted many to the delights of sweet, smoky whisky. If you’ve not tried it before, then this is the perfect opportunity. If you have, then it’s time to stock up.
