Jim Beam ® ‘Makes History’ as First Whiskey to Partner with Snapchat

Deerfield, Ill. – September 15, 2015 – Today, Jim Beam officially announces a new partnership with Snapchat, becoming the first whiskey brand to leverage the app for marketing efforts. Beginning immediately, branded Jim Beam video content, targeted exclusively at consumers of legal drinking age, will appear throughout various Snapchat Live Stories. The partnership and branded content will run in the U.S. through the end of October, coinciding with existing marketing efforts supporting new Jim Beam® Apple, Apple Liqueur with Bourbon – the latest flavored whiskey from the world’s No. 1 bourbon.

When Snapchat users watch select Live Stories – curated streams of user submitted Snaps from various locations and events – those 21 years and older will see vertical, video ads, viewable for 10 seconds, featuring the brand’s Signature Serve cocktail, “Jim Beam® Apple and Soda.” The crisp, refreshing new cocktail mixes Jim Beam® Apple and club soda over ice, with a wedge of lemon, for a delicious, refreshing cocktail all year round.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Snapchat who provides us an excellent opportunity to create buzzworthy awareness to our fans on a relevant age-gated platform with significant reach,” said Andrea Javor, Senior Director Media at Beam Suntory. “We take pride in staying at the forefront of innovation, not only with our product offerings but also through our marketing efforts, and we consider Snapchat an excellent strategic partner to bring our crisp, refreshing new product to market.”

From a brand marketing objective standpoint, Snapchat is currently the fastest growing platform for the Jim Beam® Apple target – legal drinking age Millennials – and aligns with the brand’s priority on mobile marketing to connect with Millennial consumers where they’re consuming information. Jim Beam is also able to strategically drive contextual relevancy for the new apple-flavored whiskey through the partnership by inserting the brand into specific Snapchat Live Stories that connect with refreshment occasions.

In addition to Snapchat, Jim Beam is taking another refreshing approach toward marketing with the execution of a three-dimensional (3D) sound program for on-premise sampling and trial in key markets across the country. The interactive experience features audio content, which walks fans through the experience of making and enjoying the new Jim Beam Apple and Soda cocktail through depth and dimensional effects. The immersive 3D-sound interaction is expected to reach nearly 85,000 consumers at bars through 650 sampling events in 13 markets nationwide this fall.

Both programs are currently in-market and the next proof-point that Jim Beam continues to Make History® not only with its rich, 220-year heritage of bourbon production, but also in being a leader by its marketing executions.

BENRIACH WHISKY TASTING – WEDNESDAY 2ND DECEMBER 2015

For our final tasting of the year we will be welcoming back the ebullient and extremely knowledgeable Stewart Buchanan, Brand Ambassador for BenRiach Distillery on Speyside.  Those of you who have met Stewart before will know of his passion for whisky which, along with the experience he has gained over the years on the production side, makes him an excellent guide through the varied range of excellent whiskies that BenRiach produce.

Since its takeover by an independent consortium in 2004 BenRiach has gone from strength to strength.   They manage to successfully produce a wide variety of styles that includes both unpeated and peated whiskies plus some very well balanced finishes in wine, sherry and port casks.  These diverse whiskies range from the smooth, fruity, honeyed and spicy core range through to the robust peated (yet still undeniably Speyside) expressions, meaning there is truly something for all tastes.

Tickets are £15 per person and will be available to buy from 12.15pm on Monday 9th November online or by ‘phone only.  Please note, no bookings will be taken before this time and the maximum number of tickets per booking is 6.

ABERLOUR UNVEILS ‘VOICE-O-GRAPH’ IN LONDON – Scotch Whisky News

ABERLOUR UNVEILS ‘VOICE-O-GRAPH’ IN LONDON

Aberlour, the award-winning single malt, has unveiled the next phase of its ‘Made From Experience’ marketing platform in London, ahead of a world tour that started in New York this summer. The Aberlour Voice-o-Graph is a rare vintage recording booth that offers fans of music and single malt Scotch whisky the chance to capture their own experiences on vinyl.

Built in the 1940s, and believed to be one of only two working examples in the world, the Aberlour Voice-o-Graph cuts directly on to a 6″ vinyl and represents one of the earliest forms of recording. From budding musicians to storytellers, to hopeless romantics recording messages of love, the Voice-o-Graph has been used to capture special moments, allowing a lifetime of experiences to be captured in 65 seconds.

Aberlour has partnered with iconic independent record store, Phonica Records in Soho, London, to offer the Voice-o-Graph to the public for two weeks in October, before moving on to Canada and  France before its final stop at the Aberlour Distillery. Whisky fans in London will also get the opportunity to sample Aberlour 12 Year Old Double Cask Matured, the rich, sweet and well balanced single malt Scotch whisky that demonstrates the distillery’s exceptional use of ex-Sherry casks.

Nikki Burgess, Global Brand Director for Aberlour, said: “Our ‘Made from Experience’ series reflects our philosophy of harnessing skill, passion and expertise to create uniquely crafted result. Whether it be a velvety smooth single malt or a single edition vinyl pressed in our Voice-o-Graph, we believe in celebrating and facilitating authentic and meaningful experiences.”

The Voice-o-Graph builds on Aberlour’s Global ‘Made from Experience’ series, which last year saw photographer and bassist from Mumford & Sons, Ted Dwane produce an exhibition of photographs – a curation of emotive portraits of people he had met and photographed during his experiences on the road with his band.

The Aberlour Voice-o-Graph will be available free of charge at Phonica Records, 51 Poland Street, London W1F 7LZ from Tuesday 20th October to Monday 2nd November between 11.30am and 7pm Monday – Saturday and from 12.30pm – 5.30pm on Sundays while daily vinyl stocks last.

For more information please visit www.aberlour.com/.

AA Kilchoman 2008

Kilchoman 2008 Vintage & PX Finish ImpEx Exclusive are now in!

Established in 2005, Kilchoman  is one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland. Based on a farm on the rugged west coast of Islay, Kilchoman was the first distillery to be built on the island for 125 years. Kilchoman displays all that is great about the grass-roots traditions of Scotch whisky distilling. As well as being one of only a handful of distilleries still practicing floor malting, barley is also grown on the farm, making Kilchoman the only distillery to complete all parts of the whisky making process on site. Kilchoman truly is Islay’s farm distillery – from barley to bottling.

AA Kilchoman Sherry Cask

Kilchoman 2008 Vintage 46% ABV

The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2015 – Generations Mortlach 75 Years Old by Gordon & MacPhail – Scotch Whisky News

The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2015 – Generations Mortlach 75 Years Old by Gordon & MacPhail

Gordon & MacPhail (G&M) have hit the headlines by releasing two exceptionally old and rare whiskies from Mortlach – a 70 Year Old launched at Edinburgh Castle in 2010, and a 75 Year Old that first appeared this autumn, billed by G&M as ‘the world’s most exclusive single malt whisky’.

AA TWE 1

The four G&M Mortlachs shown at the first Whisky Show Masterclass of 2015 (Image © Simon J Hanna)

The latter was the star attraction at the first Masterclass of the 2015 Whisky Exchange Whisky Show, hosted by G&M sales director Stephen Rankin and ably assisted by whisky writer Charlie MacLean. Four Mortlachs were shown at the tasting:

Charlie opened proceedings with a little white lie (‘I’ve no idea what we’re tasting this morning… oh, it’s the Mortlachs!’) as we started with the 12 Year Old:

AA TWE 2

MORTLACH 12 YEAR OLD (BOT. 1970S), 40% ABV

Nose: Haunting aromas of leather books, flowers and violets, sweet spice and wax jackets, along with orange, honey and pot pourri. Quite a nose for a relatively young dram.

Palate: Rich honeyed fruit, stewed peaches, then more savoury notes of leather and wood polish. Soft and faintly smoky, with a rich mouthfeel.

Finish: Soft and rich, with the stone fruit lingering.

Comment: What a delightful whisky. Intense and heady, with such character.

Stephen and Charlie shared some of the history of Mortlach, which was the first distillery to open in Dufftown, in 1823, and would remain the only one until William Grant, who worked at Mortlach for 20 years, founded Glenfiddich in 1886. Charlie then did his best to explain Mortlach’s fiendishly complicated distillation style, known as the ‘2.81 process’, which uses six stills, all of different sizes, with some wash distilled twice, some three times and some four times.

Charlie said: ‘It takes a stillman at Mortlach a whole year to understand the process. It makes for a very heavy-style spirit, and one that was known as “The Beast of Dufftown”.’

On to our second whisky, distilled in 1938 and matured in sherry casks for 47 years:

AA TWE 3

MORTLACH 1938 (BOT. 1980S), 40% ABV

Nose: Rich and sweet, with tempting aromas of cinder toffee, chocolate and nut brittle. Big and generous, again with a hint of smoke, and plenty of dried fruit. A touch vegetal.

Palate: Creamy and peppery with some candied orange, blue cheese and tingling spiciness. A whole-hearted dram, with raisins, currants, cinnamon and nutmeg contrasting beautifully with the edgier peppery notes.

Finish: Warm spices coats the mouth, with the sweetness gradually fading.

Comment: A fascinating dram. I’m not sure that water does this whisky any favours; it stands perfectly well on its own.

Charlie was certainly a fan: ‘I could easily drink a bottle of it.’

We jumped forward to the 1950s for the third dram of the day, a 58-year-old bottled in 2012 and matured in Spanish oak:

AA TWE 4

MORTLACH 1954 (BOT.2012), 43% ABV

Nose: A totally different beast from the previous whisky, this has big, hearty aromas of cured meat, leather books and coal fires. Savoury and sweet, this is gutsy and brave.

Palate: Softer and fruitier than on the nose, this has warm, heady notes of apricots, sweet spice and dried orange peel. Quite dry, with a touch of smoke (again). Then some dark chocolate arrives, enriching the mouthfeel.

Finish: Rich and full, with orange and apricot notes lingering.

Comment: So, so different to the first two whiskies, but none the worse for it. This is how I think of Mortlach: a big, full-throttle dram but with an extra dimension that softens the spirit and adds layers of complexity.

The three whiskies tasted so far all impressed, but the one everyone had been waiting for was ready. Seventy-five years in the making, this Mortlach was distilled on 17 November 1939, and finally bottled at 44.4% ABV in 2015:

AA TWE 5

GENERATIONS MORTLACH 75 YEARS OLD, 44.4% ABV

Nose: Where to start? Savoury and creamy at first, with Stilton and salami, then walnuts and stone fruit. There’s a refreshing flinty, wet-stone note lurking in the background, as well as some soft floral notes, and toffee sweetness.

Palate: Layer upon layer of flavour – honeyed fruit, orange oil, peaches, then rich notes of toffee and woody spice. Rich and mouthfilling, but clean, not overpowering.

Finish: Rich treacle toffee and malt is the main characteristic, with the spices providing an aromatic backdrop.

Comment: I was lucky enough to try the 70 Year Old in Edinburgh back in 2010, and I was struck at the time at how fresh and sprightly the whisky seemed. Well, this even older dram is no different, and it demonstrates perfectly how the right barrel can transform a spirit. There is plenty of wood influence in the whisky, but it’s not overdone, and the freshness is staggering for such a venerable bottle.

Charlie likened the 75 Year Old to ‘an actress’s dressing room’, describing the whisky as the ‘Ingrid Bergman of single malts’. And with that dramatic cinematic analogy, the opening Masterclass of this year’s Whisky Show came to a close. The Beast of Dufftown was well and truly tamed…
