Whisky Ramblings Via Video #111

Mark Dermul, Belgian Whiskyblogger, tries the Glenmorangie Quita Ruban. Glenmorangie has the tallest stills in the industry, over 5 meters high, creating a very fine spirit indeed. And they allow quite a bit of their whisky to be finished on all types of casks, creating a nice range. Mark tries their Quinta Ruban, matured on bourbon casks for 12 years before receiving a finish in port pipes.

Green Award for Dalmunach – Scotch Whisky News

Green Award for Dalmunach

Chivas Brothers is delighted to have won The Sustainability Award at The Drinks Business Green Awards last week.

The awards are the world’s largest programme to raise awareness of green issues in the drinks trade.

The Sustainability Award recognises the efforts made by one company to employ the most efficient and effective sustainable practices in their business, whether in the production facilities or in their agricultural practices.

The Judges took into account all aspects of production where waste management, recycling and sustainable practices have been improved in the last three years and more particularly in the last 12 months.

Chivas Brothers impressed the judging panel with its comprehensive analysis of its own sustainable practices, which the judges were able to see have been gaining momentum in recent years and in the last 12 months in particular.

The company was commended for increasing its material recovery levels at the organisation’s two bottling locations, rising from 86% in 2011-12 to 97% in 2013-14, and for achieving a 90% business recycling level.

The judges further commended Chivas Brothers for commissioning the replacement of heating, vacuum and air-conditioning controls in the drain and fill area to improve operational efficiency at their Kilmalid facility, and for replacing their fleet of Toyota hybrid vehicles with 10 Vauxhall Ampera electric cars in 2013.

The new Dalmunach Distillery also particularly impressed the judges for its design efficiency of 19MJ per litre, compared with the industry benchmark (Scotch Whisky Association) of 28MJ per litre for a distillery with a similar number of stills!

Huge congratulations to Ronald Daalmans, Environmental & Sustainability Manager and his team at Chivas Brothers for all their expertise and hard work!

Robbie’s Whisky Merchants – Whisky An’A’That GLENCADAM Masterclass 2015

With less than two weeks to go until this years festival is launched we are releasing the last few Masterclass tickets.

Full details below.

A Masterclass Presented by

◦David Wilson Production Manager at Glencadam Distillery
◦On Sat 6th June at 12.30pm
◦Tickets £30.00 per person

We have decided this year to do only one Festival Masterclass and to this end we have chosen an excellent Distillery that is not always recognised as being mainstream, not every malt has to come from Islay or Speyside to be a brilliant dram.

Our guest presenting this wonderful Masterclass today is David Wilson, Glencadam Distillery Production Manager with 26 years’ experience in the whisky industry. David’s life in the whisky industry began at Loch Lomond distillers 20th February 1989. Working in all aspects of distillery life, filling, stowing, and movement of casks. In 1994 Loch Lomond built their own Grain Distillery making Loch Lomond the only unique distillery with a Grain and Malt Distillery on one site, a great place for David to develop further skills. In 2004 he joined Glencadam as Production Supervisor, during his first year at Glencadam he gained his I.B.D. (institute of brewing and distilling) qualification.

This is truly a unique chance to be tutored through the full range of ages and styles from this classic east coast Distillery. Also at this Masterclass we will have the world wide release of Glencadam 17 Year Old Ltd Edition Portwood, one not to be missed! Numbers are restricted and tickets will be sold on a first come basis.

Springbank 12 Year Old Port Pipe Matured at Milroy’s of Soho – Scotch Whisky News

SPRINGBANK 12 YEAR OLD PORT PIPE

We’ll let you in on a little secret we’ve got quite a few exciting Boubons to announce next week, however, so as not to show bias, we thought it best that we announce some of our recent Scotch arrivals too. Of particular note is the stunning Springbank 12 year old, matured exclusively in a port pipe. Bizarrely it doesn’t have that classic red berry flavour profile you’d expect from a port cask, rather this is a light, estery Springbank bottled at cask strength. If this isn’t your thing then we’ve found a few other bits that have been hidden away!

AA Springbank Port

SPRINGBANK 12 YEAR OLD

2003 – PORT PIPE MATURED – 58.3% – £64.95

Premier family-owned Campbeltown distillers Springbank, have just released this single cask port pipe matured single malt. Only 696 bottles were yielded from the cask which has rested for 12 years until this April just gone. Expect estery notes of plum, rhubarb and gooseberry on the nose, with full bodied fruit on the palate with additional notes of spice and boiled sweets, finishing with that idiosyncratic smoky, oily Springbankness. This is one for those who enjoy the 15 year old but want it with a cask strength punch!

Whisky L! Taiwan Kicks off Asia’s Whisky Festival Season! – Whisky News

Whisky L! Taiwan kicks off Asia’s Whisky Festival season!

On the 15 & 16 August, Taipei will be kicking off what has now become Asia’s whisky festival season with Whisky L! Shanghai & Beijing following in quick pursuit. Hosted at Taipei’s Grand Hyatt, the inaugural Whisky L! Taiwan promises to be in line with sister shows Shanghai & Beijing set to attract leading whisky celebrities with a clear objective to deliver a fun, festive and educational experience.

With over five years of executing whisky festivals in Taiwan, show director Stephen Notman acknowledges the changes in market dynamics and the important action that needs to be taken by the industry to sustain continued growth for a further 3 – 5 years. “Taiwan is a remarkable market. Her growth and influence throughout Asia drinking trends is phenomenal. We are however entering an era where we as an industry requires to focus second phase whisky drinker recruitment into the category.” Notman continues “The Taiwan whisky market looks completely different to that of five years ago. New whisky drinkers entering into the category are now greeted with a greater variety but also a lot more releases that opt not to share an age indicator on the label. As an industry, we should be focusing on what is the distillers, blenders or independent bottlers philosophy towards each and every release.”

To assist the direction, positioning and evolution of the whisky conversations in Taiwan, The Whisky L! Committee consisting of Taiwan’s leading whisky authorities have been instrumental in the development of the show. To celebrate the inaugural show, the committee have selected the 2015 Limited Edition.

Fresh innovation to the whisky festival scene will see the establishment of the distillation zone headed up by leading international experts Neil Ridley and Joel Harrison. Such area will be focused on distillers new make spirit. With guided tours, master classes and live entertainment, Whisky L! promises to be an exciting experience for new to establish drinkers alike.

ROAD SHOW DATES:

WHISKY L! TAIWAN  – 15 & 16 August

Whisky L! BEIJING     – 21 & 22 August
