Pikesville Straight Rye Named Number Two World Whiskey in 2016 Whisky Bible – American Whiskey News

AA Pikesville

Pikesville Straight Rye Named Number Two World Whiskey in 2016 Whisky Bible

BARDSTOWN, KY – Only five months after the introduction of the ultra-premium offering, Heaven Hill Distillery’s historic Pikesville Straight Rye Whiskey is rounding out the year on top as Jim Murray’s number two-rated whiskey in the world in the esteemed Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2016—a true honor, as the whiskeys included were drawn from all styles and regions.

Pikesville also walked away with “Rye of the Year” and previously earned spirits industry acclaim winning a Double Gold Medal at the 2015 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and 95 Points at F. Paul Pacult’s Ultimate Spirits Challenge. At 6 years old and 110 proof, this new expression of Pikesville Rye is produced at Heaven Hill’s historic Bernheim Distillery in Louisville, Ky. and aged in its premier rickhouses in Bardstown, Ky. The product is available with allocated national distribution.

Heaven Hill now produces four times as much rye than it did just a few years ago – a true testament to the revival of Rye Whiskey. Distilled from at least 51 percent rye, with corn and malted barley as the “small” grains, Pikeville Rye embraces the tradition of American Straight Rye Whiskey. On the palate, Pikesville Rye is dry and spicy, with hints of honeyed rye and cloves. Soft vanilla and baking spices round out the finish.

“Heaven Hill reclaimed the past with Pikesville Straight Rye Whiskey,” said Max L. Shapira, President, Heaven Hill Distillery, and second-generation family member. “Pikesville is a brand with a storied history and one that we are proud to revamp and offer as an ultra-premium offering. We are excited that Pikesville is recognized as one of the leading brands worldwide.”

Now in its thirteenth annual edition, Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible releases the top five world whiskeys among more than the 4,500 labels listed with detailed tasting notes in the book. Murray, an internationally recognized leading commentator on whiskeys, tasted more than 1,000 whiskeys before awarding his top five.

“Pikesville Rye embodies the history of American Straight Rye Whiskey and hones in on the traditional taste that consumers are embracing once again,” said Denny Potter, Heaven Hill Distillery Co-Master Distiller. “The hand-selected barrels showcase the best product out of over a million barrels aging in our inventory.”

With its Maryland roots dating back to 1895, Pikesville Rye returned after Prohibition, surviving ownership changes and the decline of the Maryland Rye whiskey industry. With Maryland production coming to a close in the 1980s, Pikesville Rye was kept alive by Heaven Hill Distillery, which has produced the spirit in Kentucky ever since.

About Pikesville Straight Rye Whiskey: Pikesville Straight Rye Whiskey is a 6-year-old, 110-proof super-premium spirit that salutes a historic Maryland mark dating back to 1895. It is distilled by Heaven Hill Distillery at the company’s historic Bernheim Distillery in Louisville and aged in its premier rickhouses in Bardstown, Ky. Co-Master Distiller Denny Potter carefully selected each extra-aged barrel and determined the spirit’s ideal proof level. With its mashbill of at least 51 percent rye, with corn and malted barley as the “small” grains, Pikesville Rye embraces the tradition of American Straight Rye Whiskey that set the stage for Rye’s current renaissance. Third, Diageo have partnered with David Beckham and Simon Fuller, creator of American Idol, manager of Beckham, and a legendary entrepreneur and philanthropist, to promote it.

The Whisky Exchange “Dalmore Blending Masterclass with Richard Paterson” – Scotch Whisky News

Whisky-Exchange-Vinopolis

Dalmore blending masterclass with Richard Paterson

‘Hello. How are you? Quite well. Thank you very much.’

If you’ve seen Whyte & Mackay’s Richard Paterson host a tasting before, you’ll be familiar with his repertoire of catchphrases, his penchant for throwing whisky around the room, his props, tricks and one-liners. But he is no magician, no illusionist – everything he does helps to educate people how to get the best from their whisky.

AA TWE1

Richard Paterson, aka The Nose, master blender at Whyte & Mackay

Richard visited The Whisky Exchange for a unique tasting of all six components of King Alexander III from Dalmore, as well as a few other goodies. Having issued a quick threat to kill anyone in the room who was holding their whisky glass the wrong way, we moved on to the King Alexander III samples.

In Their Own Words – Richard Paterson

‘This evening, we have an assemblage of wonderful whiskies and wonderful people!’
‘Next year, I will celebrate 50 years in the whisky industry’
‘When nosing whisky, you’ve got to be gentle – it’s like kissing a lady’s hand, although people don’t do that anymore! But nosing a whisky will tell you 96% of what you need to know about it. If you’re still unsure, take a taste’
‘If you want to add ice, Coca-Cola or even milk to whisky, that’s absolutely fine – but I will kill you…’
‘When tasting whisky, don’t do what they do in America: just knock back the glass and go “great”. And if you’re doing a tasting at home with a special whisky, turn the lights out! Make an effort!’
‘If you’re looking for muscle, structure and backbone in your whisky, come up to the Highlands’
‘When you visit Dalmore, you’ll see the mountains, you’ll see the Cromarty Firth, you’ll see our fat, bulbous stills and you’ll know that this is a place that makes complex whisky’
‘The classic note from Dalmore is chocolate orange’
‘When I ask people if they’ve been to Islay, they all say yes. When I ask them how many have been to Jura, they say no, they didn’t have time! The crossing takes five minutes!’

AA TWE2

Richard meets his adoring public – all staff from The Whisky Exchange!

We Tasted

Six Dalmore King Alexander III component samples:

 Marsala – honey-drenched fruit with ginger and clove
 Madeira – richly textured, with dates, figs and violets – lovely perfume
 Matusalem sherry – big, rich and nutty, with powerful dried fruits
 Small-batch bourbon – plenty of toffee and vanilla, with some toastiness from the oak
 Tawny port – clean red-berry fruit, plus milk chocolate and honey
 Cabernet Sauvignon – a swathe of dark-berry fruit, cherry menthol and oak

And then on to three finished whiskies:

Dalmore King Alexander III – a triumph of blending; rich, velvety and very fruity
Dalmore 21 Year Old – classic Dalmore chocolate and orange notes, along with honeycomb, ginger and roasted nuts
Dalmore 1969 – very different to the two previous whiskies – heady and aromatic, with aromas of tobacco, sandalwood and orange blossom, with plenty of tropical fruit and chocolate on the palate

Drooling! You’ve just gotta love Dalmore. Great distillery, great whisky….very jealous
Whisky of the Night
The tasting was all about King Alexander III, but for me, the whisky that absolutely summed up Dalmore was the 21 Year Old. Rich, sherried loveliness.

AA TWE3

DALMORE 21 YEAR OLD, 42% ABV

Nose: Rich and chocolatey, with tempting aromas of honeycomb and ginger, along with toasty oak and bitter-orange marmalade.
Palate: The rich, sweet notes continue on to the palate, with a big hit of chocolate-dipped oranges, roasted nuts and spice. Soft, silky mouthfeel.
Finish: The deep richness and fruitiness lingers.
Comment: This sums up Dalmore for me: rich, sherried whisky with bags of dried fruit and nuts, citrus notes and a plush, luxurious mouthfeel.

There aren’t many whisky tastings where the audience rush to the stage for a selfie with the host, but Richard Paterson commands that level of affection. We have a huge range of Dalmore whiskies on our website – why not get one in time for Christmas?  And if you want to see Richard in action, watch this great clip here

Talisker Storm at K&L California – Scotch Whisky News

kl_logo_trans

  • Talisker Storm Limited Edition Isle of Skye Single Malt Whisky 750ml (Previously $73.00) ( $59.99) Whisky Advocate: “Diageo has introduced this new no age statement variant of Talisker single malt. The name reflects the distiller’s aspiration to enhance the maritime notes in this expression. Refill and rejuvenated casks have both contributed to its maturation. The nose is youthful but rounded, with brine, burning wood embers, vanilla, and honey. Sweet and spicy on the palate, with cranberries and black currants, while peat smoke is always present, plus black pepper. The finish lingers, with walnuts and fruity peat. (Vol. 22, #2)” K&L Notes: Whisky Advocate’s “Highlands/Islands Single Malt Scotch Whisky of the Year” (2013) The new American release of Talisker Storm is finally here — a non-age statement expression featuring a marriage of both young and old Talisker whiskies. Still bottled at the trademark 45.8% ABV, the fruit of the Talisker is front and center, with soft vanilla and malty goodness, but the finish is much more peaty than the other Talisker malts. That’s not to say smokier, but rather peatier — earthier, saltier, and more briny. The finish is surprisingly un-storm-like, making this whisky one of the more ironic releases of 2013, but that’s not to say it isn’t delicious. Fans of the distillery will be pleased with the extra punch, but those looking for sheer power should stick to Islay. The Storm is a punchier version of Talisker, but it’s a mere blip on the weather radar for big peat fans. For fans of more integrated and balanced peat, this is a great choice. 5 out of 5 stars from F. Paul Pacult’s Spirits Journal. Double Gold Medal San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2014.
