Park Ave New York “There’s a ‘Miscreant’ among us” – American Whisey News

Park Ave 2

Introducing Park Ave’s newest exclusive bottling, “Miscreant” by FEW Spirits.
The most ill-behaved whiskey we know.

“The Mashbill is a beast!”
– Paul Hletko, Master Distiller FEW Spirits

When we approached FEW Spirits about doing a private bottle, we were sure to tell them that we wanted something different. So when Paul told us he had just the barrel and used those words – he had our attention. As it turned out, this “beast” was more like a chameleon. Allow us to explain. “Miscreant” is the result of six different elements colliding to become a whiskey that seemingly changes one moment to the next. Just what is the mashbill for “Miscreant”? Rye, Corn, Wheat, Smoked Malt, Chocolate Malt & Pilsner.

But being different doesn’t always translate to being good. However, when Jonathan tasted the original barrel sample – He looked at his glass and said, “I think we can make some friends with this.” With so many parts – this whiskey was difficult to pin down as being ‘like’ something else. So we decided to call it, “Miscreant”

We hope you like it as much as we do.

Cheers!

AA Few

“Miscreant” by Few Spirits ~
Exclusive to Park Avenue Liquor Shop
Limited to 264 bottles.
$70/btl

We recently spoke to Paul again to get his take on ‘Miscreant’ as well as his personal tasting notes:

“The Nose is malt, malt, and more malt with a bit of malt in the back;)
There are sweet bits of sea salt caramel along with a touch of nuttiness. On the palate
entry is chocolate powder as well as creamy caramel spread on a leather spoon. (I know – but really!)
Then malt comes front and center in the mid palate with a long finish of delicious ganache backed up with some tobacco.

Btw: We don’t have anymore left in the barrel and it cannot be replicated. We didn’t save any – sooooo I’d like to buy a bottle.”

‘Miscreant’ is limited to 264 bottles. We cannot fill orders for more than that. Heck, the guy who made the stuff doesn’t even have a bottle yet. Basically, get it while you can. We are not responsible for any typographical errors in this email or the hoopla surrounding Starbucks new cups. Please contact the store with any questions.

Isle of Arran Distillery Visitor Centre celebrates award success

AA Arran Visitor

The visitor centre of the award-winning Isle of Arran Distillery has been recognised for the second year running in the Scottish Field Whisky Challenge.

Chosen over ten other well-renowned distilleries, including runners-up Glendronach and Ben Nevis, The Isle of Arran Distillery Visitor centre retained its title as the Best Distillery Visitor Experience.

Opened by Her Majesty The Queen in 1997, the visitor centre is located right next to the distillery itself overlooking the breath-taking landscape of Lochranza.  A popular destination for whisky fans, this centre offers several packages ranging in time and cost from a smaller scale tours to more in-depth whisky experiences, all lead by friendly and professionally trained guides who are fast gaining the reputation of being the best in the business. It also boasts a thriving café selling local produce and a gift shop well-stocked with core-range and limited edition Arran Single Malts.

Visitor centre manager, Faye Waterlow, said: “We’re incredibly proud of what we do at the visitor centre. The distillery produces whisky of an exceptional quality and our aim is always to match that with our warmth, knowledge and dedication.

“The feedback from visitors is always our marker but to be recognised by Scottish Field for the second year running is a wonderful affirmation of our efforts.”

As the distillery approaches its 21st birthday, the visitor centre is expanding to include a new Blending and Tasting room which will open in March 2016. Two new stills are also being installed to meet increasing demand for the Isle of Arran Single Malts.

Euan Mitchell, managing director of the distillery commented: “Welcoming people to the distillery is very important to us. The quality and provenance of our whisky naturally attracts some very passionate visitors, including Roman Abramovich this summer, so it’s essential that our visitor experience lives up to expectations.

“With the distillery turning 21 next year, we’re looking forward to expanding and hope to welcome many more whisky fans to Lochranza.”

Port Ellen 33 Year Old 1982 Magnum Old & Rare at The Whisky Barrel – Scotch Whisky News

AA Port Ellen

Port Ellen 33 Year Old 1982 Magnum Old & Rare

Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Port Ellen 33 Year Old 1982 vintage Islay single malt Scotch whiskey. Single sherry butt bottled September 2015 by Hunter Laing & Co. for the Old & Rare Platinum Selection. Presented in a giant 1.5 litre Magnum bottle. Just 30 numbered bottles produced.

Port Ellen Distillery was established by Alexander K. Mackay on the southern coast of the Isle of Islay at Port Ellen in 1825. Port Ellen was a malt whisky distillery but closed in 1983 and whilst the distillery buildings remain Port Ellen drum maltings occupy part of the site and participates in Feis Ile, the annual Islay Festival of Malt and Music. Most recent official bottling of Port Ellen single malt whisky was the Port Ellen 11thRelease. During the winter of 1823-24 James Fox tested his newly designed spirit safe at Port Ellen Distillery prior to its introduction in all Scottish licenced distilleries by 1825 in order to comply with enactment of the Excise Act of 1823. Thus Port Ellen Distillery was the first Scottish distillery to install a spirit safe and James Fox was paid £428 for his work.

The Whisky Exchange “Dalmore prize draw – win whisky worth more than £1,750!” – Scotch Whisky News

twe_logo2

Dalmore prize draw – win whisky worth more than £1,750!

It’s the season of prize draws at The Whisky Exchange, and the next on the list of great whiskies to win is an impressive set from Dalmore.

With legendary master blender Richard Paterson travelling the world extolling the virtues of the distillery’s whisky, it’s unsurprising that Dalmore has the reputation that it does. Roll in their impressive stocks of old whisky and a history stretching back 1839, and you have a distillery that’s been turning heads for a long while.

We’ve put together a set of three incredible whiskies to give away to one lucky customer:

AA DAlmore

Dalmore 18 – the top of Dalmore’s regular range. With lots of fruit and spice, this is the perfect upgrade for those looking for a great, easy-drinking sherried dram.
Dalmore 21 – a limited edition bottling released this year. Matured first in American white oak before being ‘finished’ for 10 years in first-fill oloroso sherry casks.
Dalmore 30 – limited to only 888 bottles, this is the latest release of Dalmore’s impressive 30 year old. A masterpiece of sherry maturation.

In total, the three bottles come to just over £1,800 – an excellent prize, even if we do say ourselves.

To be in with a chance of winning the set, just buy a Dalmore 15 Year Old glass pack before 11.59pm on 10 January 2016 – we’ll automatically enter you into the prize draw.

While the entry-level Dalmore 12 Year Old is probably their best known whisky, the dram that we turn to as the perfect example of what the distillery does best is Dalmore 15 Year Old. It’s soft and spicy, but with the depth of flavour and richness that you get from well selected sherry casks – something that Dalmore pride themselves on.

AA Dalmore Glass

DALMORE 15 YEAR OLD GLASS PACK

Nose: Soft and very approachable, with tempting notes of dried fruit, hazelnuts, cinnamon and nutmeg. Smells like Christmas!
Palate: Rich, classic Christmas-cake notes of raisins, currants, cherries, cinnamon and nutmeg.
Finish: Sweet and raisiny, this rich-tasting dram lingers for a long time – save this one until after dinner…
Comment: An excellent dram for this time of year and the glass pack is a great gift – either for a whisky fan or for yourself.
