Orphan Barrel Rhetoric 21 Year Old Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey at K&L California – American Whiskey News

kl_logo_trans

If you’re down to your last drop of 20 year old Bourbon, never fear! We’ve just received our latest shipment of 21 year old Kentucky Bourbon from the Orphan Barrel series. While most stores are selling it around the $150 mark, we’re going to get crazy and give it away for $99.99. Grab a bottle (or three) while they last!

AA K&L 1

Orphan Barrel Rhetoric 21 Year Old Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey 750ml (Elsewhere $150) ($99.99)

(ships like 1.5L due to bottle shape)

The sequel to one of the most-coveted and fastest-selling Bourbons in K&L history is now back for round two (albeit one year older this time around). The Rhetoric 21 year from Diageo’s Orphan Barrel series is bringing serious bang-for-the-buck, showcasing mature stocks of beautiful American whiskey (in a seller’s market, no less) in this rock release. Sweet vanilla on the entry rounds quickly into herbaceous notes of tobacco and cedar, before finishing in a flurry of pepper and spice. It’s completely in balance from front to back; never too woody, never tasting dried out or past its prime. The whiskey is in a fantastic place right now and, again, for the age alone they could have charged double. Grab your bottle while we still have inventory. A deal this good is never around for long.

David Driscoll | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 09, 2015It’s crazy to me that there can be a 21 year old American whiskey in 2015 that sells for the same price Pappy 20 did back in 2008. Buying extra mature Bourbon in this market is like buying an apartment in San Francisco–you’re in no position to squabble over price due to the incredible demand and incredibly-low supply. Yet, not only is the Rhetoric 21 a reasonable $99.99, it’s also delicious. The fear is that these older releases are just over-oaked leftovers from Bernheim distillery, but in fact this is bursting with sweetness and spice. Grab two and save one for later. You’ll be thankful you did.
Kyle Kurani | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 08, 2015Another seriously good offering in the Orphan Barrel series that is everything you could ask for to feed that old Bourbon. Incredibly balanced, this bring me back to the days when I tasted older expressions regularly- days long gone- when Bourbon had a beautiful mix of rich and savory characteristics. The Rhetoric strikes that beautiful balance. The nose leaps out with beautifully rich notes of baked apple and vanilla spice, quite inviting. The palate carries the apples but introduces the savory aspects that 21 years in a barrel gives you. Leather, sandalwood intertwined with baking spices galore. Simply the best and oldest hooch we can get our hands on. Enjoy while it lasts!

Paul McGinley takes over captaincy from Ian Poulter

Ballantine’s, the world’s No 2 Scotch whisky, has today announced the new Captain of its online Golf Club; Paul McGinley. McGinley will be taking over the reins from last year’s Captain Ian Poulter. As winning Ryder Cup captain in 2014, McGinley brings a wealth of expertise and skills to his new role as Captain of the unique virtual Golf Club. He exemplifies leadership, hard work and perseverance – traits that have been on display throughout his career and that he will bring to his captaincy, building on Poulter’s success as the Club continues to grow across the globe.

The Ballantine’s Golf Club is the first online global golf club of its kind and was officially launched last year at the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open. Membership to the Ballantine’s Golf Club is free and members receive unique access to exclusive content, invitational events, whisky tastings, VIP hospitality and a range of rewards, as well as the chance to meet and play with top players and participate in a member-only global tournament.

At this year’s launch event, which was hosted by leading sports presenter Di Dougherty, Ballantine’s also premiered McGinley’s ‘Moment of Truth’ (above) – a mini-documentary offering a unique insight into his golfing back story, the obstacles he has overcome and the strength of his character that laid the foundations for his Ryder Cup successes. The short video shows how McGinley overcame a serious knee injury at age 17 to have an outstanding career and become one of the greatest Ryder Cup Captains of his generation. It illustrates his leadership qualities and how he made team spirit such a key ingredient to Ryder Cup success.

Throughout the season, www.ballantinesgolfclub.com will be updated with further exclusive content including ‘Shot Makers’, which features swing and course management tips from McGinley and ‘Captain’s Diary’ updates from Paul, where he will give insights into various chapters of his career and his life on the tour.

Paul McGinley, Ballantine’s Golf Club Captain, commented: “It is an honour to take up the position of Captain of the Ballantine’s Golf Club; I’m really excited to be part of and lead this special online community. 2015-2016 is set to be a great year for the Club and I look forward to helping it grow from strength to strength.”

Peter Moore, Global Brand Director for Ballantine’s, added: “We have a rich, longstanding heritage in golf dating back to 1960 and the Ballantine’s Global Online Golf Club has marked a significant shift in our strategy within the sport. We have created a unique online experience for those with an appreciation of both whisky and the true spirit of golf. Our newly appointed Captain, Paul McGinley, will continue to drive the success of the Club and we believe his leadership on and off the course will inspire golf lovers to join the Club and unlock the exclusive member benefits.”

The launch of the Golf Club was inspired by Ballantine’s ‘Stay True’ positioning, which serves as an invitation to consumers to express themselves in a genuine and authentic way, applauding conviction and self-belief. The identity of the Golf Club reflects its members’ modern lifestyle and aspirational outlook, building on Ballantine’s strong heritage in golf in a contemporary and innovative way.

WE’RE HOGGING ALL OF THE WHISKY

WHISTLEPIG BOSS HOG NOW AVAILABLE!

We seem to have a queue of delivery trucks up Greek Street waiting to drop off their wares as we get in each morning, as new whisky just keeps on arriving! This week we have the indomitable WhistlePig Boss Hog with it’s quite frankly awesome flying pig stopper! A small allocation of the ever popular Old Pulteney 35 Year Old, the new Kilkerrans from Glengyle, and even some whisky from Taiwan!

AA 11
WhistlePig Boss Hog, 13 Year Old, Barrel 63, 75cl, 58.5%

The Boss Hog is the cream of the WhistlePig crop. This 13 year old has been bottled at barrel proof, and is a peppery rye with notes of candied orange peel, wild flowers and varnished oak. The flying pig stopper is a tribute to Mortimer, the WhistlePig boar who died defending his missus from a rival male! This rye is available in very limited quantities so get it while you can! £200

AA 2

Old Pulteney 35 Year Old, 42.5%

A superb aged Old Pulteney presented in a beautiful porthole box. Only a small quantity has been produced and is reminiscent of the excellent 40 year old bottling. Spiced orange, dried lemon peel and rancio notes form the backbone of this Highland malt, with undertones of sea salt, sultanas and greengages.  £450

AA 3

Kilkerran Work In Progress 7th Release Bourbon Wood, 54.1%

This outstanding, down-to-earth whisky reveals flavours ranging from coastal salinity to honey-coated almonds. We’re huge fans of this recent addtion to Campbeltown. In fact our boss used to buy us out of all of our stock of previous editions so he could keep his last bar stocked with his favourite whisky! This Bourbon cask matured single malt has been bottled at cask strength. £46.95

AA 4

Kavalan Soloist Single Malt, Sherry Cask, 57.8%

An insane Taiwanese single malt that has been very much matured in ex-sherry casks – where the sherry starts and the whisky stops we can’t decide! This is single malt made exactly as it would be in Scotland, and the King Car distillery that produces it has won a multitude of awards for their efforts!  £120

Highland Park Competition – win a bottle of Orcadian Vintage 1976 From The Whisky Exchange – Scotch Whisky News

hlpob_1976v1

With summer in the air here at TWE HQ, we think it’s time for a new competition. We’re big Highland Park fans and we’ve got a very special bottle to give away: Highland Park 1976 Orcadian Vintage.

The Highland Park Orcadian Vintages are an impressive range of whiskies, very limited releases that are increasingly hard to find. They range from the 1964, one of the oldest officially bottled Highland Parks ever released, through to the 1976, bottled at a comparatively sprightly 35 years old back at the end of 2011.

I was very fortunate enough to have a taste of the 1976 a couple of years back, and was very impressed.

HIGHLAND PARK 1976 ORCADIAN VINTAGE

Nose: Fruit skins, vanilla cream, milk chocolate, ground almonds and a hint of sea spray.

Palate: Soft to start, with a creamy mouthfeel. An initial burst of sweet apple turned slowly into mouth-puckering apple skins, with fruity caramel keeping things just sweet enough.

Finish: Long and lingering, with apples and custard, cinnamon fireball gobstoppers, nutmeg and a lingering hint of fruity Garibaldi biscuits.

Here’s what Gerry Tosh, then brand ambassador and now global marketing manager, had to say about the 1976:

It’s an impressive dram which sells for over £2,500 on the rare occasions that you can find it. We have a bottle, and we’re going to give it to one lucky Whisky Exchange customer.

All you need to do to be in with a chance of winning, is buy a bottle of Highland Park Dark Origins before 19 August 2015 and you will be automatically entered into the draw.

hlpob_non8

The Dark Origins appeared about a year ago and flew off the shelves, as you might expect a Highland Park fully matured in sherry casks to. About 80% of the whisky comes from first-fill casks and the majority of those are made from European oak, a combination that gives a huge sherried punch to the whisky. However, they then calm things down with a good dose of refill-sherry-cask-matured whisky, which adds a distinctly Highland Park character and lets their gently smoky spirit sing.

Nose: Sharp new leather and backbone of sweet raisins, with an Eccles-cake

richness, nutmeg, sharp clove notes, hints of charcoal and boot polish.

Palate: Bitter char at first, giving way to sweet raisins, wax polish and old armchairs. Orange and liquorice hints build behind damp bark, rich earth and gentle notes of green leaves.

Finish: Medium length, with dry raisins, anise and lingering salty liquorice.

Here’s what new global brand advocate, Daryl Haldane, reckons:

It’s a great dram in its own right, and the chance of winning a bottle of the 1976 makes it an even better prospect. For full details, head over to the competition page, but make sure to grab your bottle of Highland Park Dark Origins by 19 August 2015 to be in the draw.

You can find full details, including all of the competition rules, terms and conditions, on our Highland Park Orcadian Vintage prize draw page.
