Whisky Tasting Events at Milroy’s of Soho

London’s oldest whisky shop is excited to announce a series of Scotch whisky, Bourbon and rye whiskey tastings to be held downstairs in The Vault at Milroy’s of Soho.

All events can hold up to 30 people and will be hosted by Lee Tomlinson or Angus Martin both experienced Milroy’s of Soho staff.

Lee frequently visits distilleries in Scotland and for the last year he has been hitting the whisky auctions in search of old bottlings in a grand experiment to understand the differences between whisky made now, and that made twenty, thirty years or more ago. Angus’ love of whisky began at home and developed as he spent his time at university visiting distilleries across Scotland. He started his career at Scotch restaurant Boisdale of Belgravia as a whisky and cigar sommelier and then he jumped ship to Milroy’s in 2011. Angus runs all of the specialist tasting events at Milroy’s of Soho.

Milroy’s of Soho has three priorities when running a tasting. Firstly, never patronise – their tastings cover everything from the basics up to the molecular science of whisky, you can attend any of Milroy’s tastings no matter what your experience of whisky is. Secondly – they don’t believe in reciting the myths that some marketers like to propagate, there’s enough scandalous whisky stories out there without inventing more! Thirdly, have fun – their tastings are informal, the important thing is to sit back and enjoy the whisky.

See below a list of upcoming events.

AD Rattray Ambassador Night (A family business that specialises in selecting single casks of whisky to bottle, founded in 1868)

Milroy’s of Soho have long been fans of the AD Rattray single cask bottlings and eagerly await each release with bated breath. On this evening Milroy’s will be joined by their brand ambassador who will take through their various single cask bottlings – expect the hard-to-find and unusual!

Date: Tuesday 23rd June 2015

Timings: 18:30 until 20:00

Price: £15. The ticket price is redeemable against a bottle of AD Rattray whisky on the evening.

Introduction to Whisky

This will be a journey into the world of whisky (and whiskey). From the shores of Scotland to the heartland of Bourbon. Milroy’s of Soho expert staff will take you from the grain which produces the amber nectar, through to the oak trees that become the casks. Furthermore, you will be regaled with the myths and legends that surround iconic distilleries and be introduced to the science employed to create this the most complex of spirits. This tasting is perfect for newcomers and connoisseurs alike. They only open whisky that they want to drink too, so expect the very best!

Date: Monday 13th July 2015 with a second date on the 24th of August.

Timings: 18:30 until 20:00

Price: £35

Glenfiddich Premium Ambassador Night

Glenfiddich is the best-selling single malt in the world. Milroy’s of Soho will host a tasting to sample the best of this plane’ss most awarded whisky under the expert tutelage of Mark Thomson UK brand ambassador for Glenfiddich. To cap it all off every attendee will be presented with a complimentary bottle of the Glenfiddich 21 Year Old.

Date: Monday 20th July, 2015

Timings: 18:30 until 20:00

Price: £125

Feis Ile 2015 Masterclass (Festival of Music & Malt)

Milroy’s of Soho sent an intrepid member of staff up to Islay. His task was to fill the shop and bar shelves with a host of limited edition bottles from the festival and the famous Islay distilleries. Naturally, as they took stock of his impressive haul, Milroy’s of Soho thought it would only be fair to give everyone the chance to try some of these (largely) smoky drams. As such, they have set up their very first Feis Ile masterclass where you can sample six of the festival releases from: Bunnahbhain, Caol Ila, Bowmore, Laphroiag, Kilchoman, and even a very special 24 year old Lagvulin!

Date: Monday 3rd August 2015

Timings: 18:30 until 20:00

Price: £35

Bootleggers & Bourbon Masterclass

Milroy’s of Soho resurrected their popular American whisky evening. Since they’ve reopened they’ve been bowled over by the growth in popularity of Bourbon and rye whisky, and now, more than ever, is a tasting dedicated to Scotch’s transatlantic cousins more appropriate. Milroy’s of Soho resident American whisky enthusiast Angus Martin will be taking guest through his favourite whisky’s and the honourable and illicit tales that surround them, from the Civil War to Mad Men!

Date: Monday 21st September 2015

Timings: 18:30 until 20:00

Price: £35

As well as these events Milroy’s of Soho has a 12 seater whisky bar called the Milroy’s Bar, serving a selection of over 250 whiskies, all poured at 35ml rather than 25ml to enjoy the taste in a more traditional manner.

Notes

Lee Tomlinson (purchasing & general manager)

Lee began his whisky career in 2010 when he joined the ‘two Phillips’ at Milroy’s after training as an electrician and then dabbling with architecture. He swiftly rose through the ranks and has been managing the store since 2011. Lee can often be found in Scotland visiting distilleries or, if you’re lucky, mixing the best daiquiris this side of the West Indies. For the last year lee has been hitting the whisky auctions in search of old bottlings in a grand experiment to understand the differences between whisky made now, and that made twenty, thirty years or more ago. Lee is responsible for keeping our shelves packed with whisky from Scotland and around the world.

Angus Martin (retail manager & online coordinator)

Angus’ love of whisky began at home and developed as he spent his time at university visiting distilleries across Scotland rather than reading tomes about. Starting his career at Scotch restaurant Boisdale of Belgravia as a whisky and cigar sommelier he jumped ship to Milroy’s in 2011. After a brief sabbatical working in the marketing department for an online whisky retailer, Angus returned to Milroy’s to run our website and tasting events in 2012. Angus has always had the intention to collect whisky but is still trying to get to grips with the bit where you don’t open the bottles! As well as keeping our website up-to-date, Angus runs all of our specialist tasting events.

Simo (Executive Director)

Twenty Eight year old Simo is the Executive Director of Milroy’s of Soho and has already three successful ventures under his belt. Most recently he launched Coal Vaults, a basement bar on Wardour Street with a paired dining concept. Simo is also the CEO of building company Griffin Construction, and started Space No9, a 1930s location house located on the Shoreditch triangle. Simo has been hands on in every project he has undertaken since he first entered the business world, taking an idea and making it grow into something incredible.

Milroy’s History and Brothers

Milroy’s of Soho was established in 1964 by John and Wallace Milroy. The Milroy brothers are credited with bringing single malt whisky from Scotland and establishing it in London. The first of its kind, it is the oldest whisky specialist and shop in London. Even before Milroy brothers took over in 1964 the space had been used as a liquor shop.

The Milroy Brothers gave advice and wisdom to the world from their shop in Soho. Hugely respected for their plain speaking and great knowledge of whisky, they are admired internationally for their simplicity, clarity and plain speaking. They are credited with bringing single malt whiskey from Scotland and establishing it in London. Even before the Milroy brothers took over, the space had been used as a liquor shop since the 1930s. The shop originally had a basement bar and was used as a whisky heaven for people to enjoy a glass surrounded by the good company of other whisky lovers. The brothers loved their shop so much they even built a bedroom upstairs. It was a place built on community with people travelling from all over London.

The Milroy’s brothers became ambassadors of whisky for London and to this day are regarded as royalty amongst whisky lovers and the alcohol industry.

Crown Royal’s High-Proof Single Barrel Whisky
Connoisseurs Laud New Approach to Making Whisky

Growing interest in high-end Canadian whisky is prompting big changes in the styles of whisky going into the newest bottlings. Until recently, Canadian whisky has been considered a light mixer by many drinkers, and not the stuff to inspire connoisseurs.

However, that image is changing as richly flavourful bottlings, until now available only in Canada, join the better-known mixing whiskies and gain broader distribution outside their homeland.

More than that, on the prodding of hard-core whisky lovers, producers have begun to introduce new, robust bottlings that cater specifically to aficionados and connoisseurs. The latest, and one of the most innovative, comes from Crown Royal.

Yes, whisky lovers spoke and the makers of Canada’s best-selling whisky listened. A new version of Crown Royal currently rolling out across the US has two qualities rarely seen in Canadian whisky, and unheard of from a major distiller.

AA CWN 3

Crown Royal Hand Selected Barrel – photo by Mark Gillespie, WhiskyCast.com.

Not only is Crown Royal Hand Selected Barrel genuine single barrel whisky, it is bottled at high proof – a full 51.5% abv. Until now such a thing was just a connoisseur’s dream. Of course single barrel bourbons and Scotches have been around for some time. However, Canadian producers have just dabbled in this area.

A few years ago, Sazerac demonstrated a demand for single barrel Canadian whisky with their successful Caribou Crossing. Pernod Ricard found they could barely keep up with sales of Lot 40, a powerful Canadian whisky they make using just rye grain, at their distillery in Windsor, Ontario.

With Alberta Premium Dark Batch (it’s called Dark Horse in Canada) Beam Suntory demonstrated that the massive rye flavours bartenders covet abound in Canadian whisky.

When they released the value-priced Canadian Club 100% Rye, Beam Suntory scored a bullseye with the much-courted Millennial generation. CC 100% Rye has put Canadian Club and Canadian whisky front and centre on the upscale younger drinker’s radar.

Crown Royal Hand Selected Barrel is clearly the next giant step forward in the 21st-century evolution of Canadian whisky.

Initially, release was limited to Texas where Crown Royal is a perennial best seller. The team at Diageo, which owns the brand, wanted to reward top individual retailers with bottlings specific to their own store. Enthusiasm for the new whisky spread quickly though, and now it is being rolled out barrel by barrel to retailers right across America.

AA CWN 4

Diageo’s Gimli, Manitoba distillery where Crown Royal is made.

I’m tickled to be able to say I had a hand in introducing this new concept to Diageo. In May 2014, I visited Diageo’s distillery in Gimli, Manitoba, with whisky guru, Dave Broom. Gimli is where Crown Royal is made.

Among the many samples we tasted, a rye whisky made in North America’s last operating Coffey still stood out. We were blown away by its hearty well-balanced flavours and told plant manager, Pauline Rooney she needed to get this to market.

Rooney has since moved to the US Diageo organization and is chairwoman of the Kentucky Distillers’ Association. However, before she left she passed our enthusiasm on to Crown Royal’s brand managers. Low and behold, by Christmas the first barrels were bottled and on store shelves.

AA CWN 5

Inside the GImli distillery discovering the joys of Coffey Rye along with Dave Broom and Dwayne Kozlowski.

Normally, this “Coffey Rye” is one of the 50 whiskies that are blended together to make the various versions of Crown Royal. It is also one of the very few Canadian whiskies made using a mash bill.

In a process found only in Canada, a fermented mash of 64% corn, 31.5% rye, and 4.5% malted barley is distilled in a Coffey still, then matured in brand new, charred, American white oak barrels.

During distillation, the still house is overwhelmed with the fragrances of milk chocolate and ripe bananas. When mature, the whisky shows remarkably robust baking spices, dark fruits, butterscotch, milk chocolate, clean crisp oak, simmering white pepper and citrus zest. It’s a conoisseur’s delight.

It is a pretty good feeling to have helped come up with the idea. Then, to top things off, by way of a thank you, Diageo invited me to help them celebrate the success of Hand Selected Barrel by giving me a barrel of my own.

On a cold winter’s day I sat down at the Gimli distillery with manager, Dwayne Kozlowski to taste samples from various barrels in three of their warehouses. After much to-ing and fro-ing Crown Royal has bottled my selection for distribution to key spirits media across the US. And, as the picture above attests, along with a few bottles just for me, they sent the empty barrel.

Thank you Dwayne. It was a very cool ending to a great learning experience.

Will you be in New Orleans for Tales of the Cocktail this July 15 to 19? If so you’ll join more than 20,000 bartenders and spirits professionals. They’ll be there to share their knowledge and learn what’s new in the world of spirits and cocktails.

I expect to be in New Orleans for the week, talking about Canadian whisky. If you are one of their 80 apprentices, I’ll be joining you for lunch to tell you about Canada’s newest whisky, Alberta Rye Dark Batch.

For those not in the apprentice program, why not join Shawn Soole, Dave Mitton and me at 10:00 on Friday, July 17 for our seminar Canadian Whisky: The Giant Awakens? Learn all about the great Canadian whiskies from Pernod Ricard and Campari – that’s Wiser’s, Lot 40, Pike Creek and the full Forty Creek range.

As well, I’ll be signing books at the Octavia book shop in the lobby of Hotel Monteleone. We’re bound to run into one another, and when we do, I hope you’ll stop me and say ‘Hi.”

Ontario Whisky = Ontario Grain = Ontario Jobs

Canada is a large country with a small population. Nearly 40% of Canada’s 36 million residents live in the province of Ontario. From the beginning, Ontario’s economy has been strongly supported by its distilling industry. Until just before Canada’s Confederation, the largest source of government revenue was Toronto’s Gooderham and Worts, a distillery.

AA CWN 7

Spirits Canada CEO, Jan Westcott explains the benefits of selling whisky in convenience stores to Christine McMillan and Yvan Baker, Ontario Liberal MPP for the riding of Etobicoke Centre. Centre: Ontario Agriculture Minister, the Hon. Jeff Leal dons a Canadian whisky tee-shirt. Right: Westcott purchases Canadian whisky in an LCBO agency store located in Comber Food Market, a small grocery store in the Village of Comber near Windsor, Ontario. Windsor, incidentally is the home of Hiram Walker distillery, the largest beverage alcohol distiller in North America.

Today, the spirits industry supports some 6,000 good, full-time jobs in Ontario and, in so doing, contributes about $1.5 billion to Ontario’s gross domestic product annually. Even in today’s burgeoning global economy that’s far from chump change.

Remarkably, there is only one source of beverage alcohol in Ontario and that is a government agency called the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO).

Through the LCBO, beverage alcohol continues to make a significant economic contribution to the province. According to their website, “… in 2013-14, LCBO sales exceeded $4.997 billion and delivered a $1.74 billion dividend to the Ontario government, not including taxes. This revenue helped pay for health care, education, infrastructure and other important government services.”

The LCBO tells us it is “one of the world’s largest buyers and retailers of beverage alcohol. Through 639 retail stores, catalogues, special order services and over 217 agency stores, the LCBO offers nearly 24,000 products annually, from more than 80 countries.” Today, according to their website, these 24,000 products include just 67 Canadian whiskies.

For decades whisky drinkers have lamented the limited selection of whiskies available in Ontario. While a single private store “out west” in Alberta, where the private sector handles retail sales, stocks over 300 whiskies, the LCBO, among all its 639 stores, carries just 438. That includes, Scotch, Irish, bourbon and everything else.

Some cynics believe that the token regard LCBO gives to whisky is a deliberate attempt to move Ontario drinkers away from spirits to wine. A walk through any LCBO store confirms what these numbers suggest: LCBO is a wine store that tolerates whisky. Today, LCBO stocks more than 7,300 wines.

The Government of Ontario is proposing to expand sales of wine and beer, but not spirits, to private retailers. Research has shown that in Ontario, most beverage alcohol is purchased for immediate consumption. People pop by the LCBO on their way to a party or event.

Thus, when convenience stores begin selling wine and beer, this can’t help but boost sales of these products, at the expense of spirits. Once again, this could be seen as a next step in weaning the public off spirits. Moreover, the economic benefit of favouring largely foreign beverages over those made in Ontario is questionable.

According to Statistics Canada, in Ontario whisky exports alone were worth $45 million to the province in the first 3 months of 2015. Adding in all the other spirits distilled in Ontario brings the value of first quarter exports to almost $100 million. All of these spirits are made from Ontario grain.

Export revenues do a lot of good in Ontario. Farmers especially, benefit from reliable long-term markets for their grain. Fears that their farm businesses could be destabilized by the proposed changes are real.

Despite LCBO disinterest, Ontario remains one of the largest markets in the world for Canadian whisky. If the government chooses to make it more convenient for consumers to buy wine and beer than spirits, the market for grain is bound to shrink.

Every day politicians are faced with tough choices. They have many competing interests to consider. But as they ponder the welcome extension of beverage alcohol sales into convenience stores, it is important that they remember that Ontario spirits and particularly Canadian whisky are made right here in Ontario, by Ontario workers, using Ontario-sourced grains.

Already, the LCBO operates 217 agency stores, most of which are located in convenience stores in areas too remote for the LCBO to service directly. There is a precedent: selling spirits in convenience stores can work. Rather than hamstring Ontario’s spirits industry, when the government extends sales of wine and beer to the private sector, they need also include spirits. It just makes good economic sense.

Let’s hope Spirits Canada’s efforts to educate decision makers about the economic benefits of Ontario’s spirits industry succeeds.

NH Liquor Commission Purchases Record Quantity of Exclusive Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel

Limited amount of Jack Daniel’s coveted whiskey available exclusively at select NH Liquor & Wine Outlets; Assistant Master Distiller Chris Fletcher to visit New Hampshire for bottle signings

Concord, NH – Only one in 100 barrels of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey is hand-selected to mature and attain the highest designation of Single Barrel quality. The New Hampshire Liquor Commission (NHLC) recently purchased a record 15 barrels – or the equivalent of 3,750 bottles – of Single Barrel, which will be available exclusively at select NH Liquor & Wine Outlets starting this week. In commemoration of the record-setting purchase, Jack Daniel’s Assistant Master Distiller Chris Fletcher will make a special appearance in the Granite State June 19th and 20th to meet with customers and autograph bottles.

“Thanks to our record sales, which reached $626 million in FY 14, including $345 million in spirits alone, the New Hampshire Liquor Commission has tremendous buying power and industry awareness and is afforded unique opportunities to acquire and deliver exclusive products for our consumers,” said NHLC Chairman Joseph W. Mollica. “This record purchase of Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel is but one example of the many exceptional spirits and wines available only at our 78 NH Liquor & Wine Outlets statewide. Bringing opportunities like this to customers strengthens our brand, differentiates us from the competition and helps drive critical state revenue.”

Dramatic temperature changes and placement in the highest reaches of Jack Daniel’s Lynchburg, Tennessee barrelhouses results in a distinct flavor profile from each and every barrel of Single Barrel. One constant is Single Barrel’s one-of-a-kind flavor, robust taste, and notes of toasted oak, vanilla and caramel.

In late April, NHLC spirits marketing specialist Mark Roy traveled to the small town of Lynchburg, home to the Jack Daniel’s Distillery, to obtain first-hand knowledge of the Jack Daniel’s whiskey-making process and to hand-select the 15 barrels of Single Barrel with the assistance of Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller Jeff Arnett, Assistant Master Distiller Chris Fletcher and representatives from Brown-Forman and Horizon Beverage Company. For an inside look at the barrel selection process and history of the Jack Daniel’s Distillery, visit the NH Liquor & Wine Outlets on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/nhliquorwine and YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/user/nhliquorandwine.

“Today’s whiskey consumers are interested in discovering nuanced flavors and that is exactly what these 15 barrels of Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel provide,” said Jack Daniel’s Assistant Master Distiller Chris Fletcher. “Once the 250 or so bottles from each barrel are gone, there will never be another whiskey that will be exactly the same, making this truly a once-in-a-lifetime purchase. To have the commitment of the state of New Hampshire to come to Lynchburg, experience the entire whiskey making process, understand what affects the flavor of the whiskey and actually hand-select their 15 favorite barrels to bring back to New Hampshire, illustrates to me that the New Hampshire Liquor Commission wants nothing but the best of the best for its customers.”

On Friday, June 19th, Fletcher will make a special appearance and bottle signing at the Hooksett 93 North NH Liquor & Wine Outlet from 3-6pm and participate in a Jack Daniel’s Family of Brands tasting and meet and greet at Makris Lobster and Steak House in Concord from 7-9pm. On Saturday, June 20th, Fletcher will participate in bottle signings and tastings at the Meredith NH Liquor & Wine Outlet from 11am-1pm, the Gilford NH Liquor & Wine Outlet from 2-4pm and conclude at the Laconia Roadhouse at the Weirs Beach Lobster Pound from 5-7pm.

The 15 varieties of Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel will be distributed throughout select NH Liquor & Wine Outlets and available for a limited time sale price of $44.99. Each bottle is adorned with a personalized medallion of authenticity inscribed with “Granite State Collection Record Setting 15 Barrels in 2015.”

“In addition to celebrating the record-setting purchase, the NH Liquor Commission is proud to have made its 15th consecutive Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel acquisition. We have come a long way since securing a lone barrel in 2001,” said Mark Roy, NHLC spirits marketing specialist. “Nowhere else in the world will these specific flavor profiles of Single Barrel be available. Each was selected to account for a variety of customer tastes. Every bottle selected features specific tasting notes from Master Distiller Jeff Arnett and we anticipate many customers will choose to purchase bottles from multiple barrels so they can experience the range of tasting experiences.”

Bowmore Feis Ile 1988, Sherry Cask Matured, 48.3%

The 2015 Feis Ile bottle from Bowmore, one of just 248 bottles drawn from the hand selected Sherry cask. Is there anything better than a big sherried peaty whisky? If there is we’ve still to find it.  Just ONE bottle available!

Nose: Rich spicy peat, dark bitter chocolate a hint of dried fruit and embers of a dying bonfire.
Palate: There’s certainly nothing gentle about this dram, the rich chocolate turns into ashy smoke, like a grown up Devil’s Cask.
Finish: Stunning…is that enough? Truly wonderful the age of the malt comes through on the finish, old bookcase and raisin.

AA Bruich

Bruichladdich High Noon 134, Feis Ile 2015, 48.7% – Signed by Jim McEwan

With just 1881 bottles produced, and a combined age of the casks that make up this stellar dram at 134 years, it’s fair to assume this is seriously old Bruichladdich! These bottles have even been signed by Jim McEwan!

Nose: Obviously the sibling of the Black Arts whiskies, the complexity is astounding, fruits of all different shapes and sizes, oak, almost tannic, leather, spice, the list could go on.
Palate: Salt, later honey, cashews and a touch of bitterness (still salty with water), a marvelous dram, one to open straight away!
Finish: Medium length, but thoroughly enjoyable nonetheless.

Scotch Whisky Auctions “PayPal and Credit Card Payments” – Scotch Whisky News

SWA B&W Logo

Hi folks. For the last four years we have delivered one of the best whisky auction experiences in the country and we are committed to continuing that. Unfortunately costs are rising all the time, and although we have held prices at our original levels, we are having to look at our cost base.

Consequently, from the 51st auction, all PayPal transactions will attract a premium of 2%. Other online auction sites have either dropped PayPal or impose a surcharge of 3.4% because its charges can be high. To counterbalance that, online credit card payments will be free of charge through WorldPay. Telephone or personal payments will also now become free of charges. In addition to accepting all the major debit and credit cards, we also accept Amex, which again, is free for online payment.

We hope you agree these charges are fair and we can continue to count on your support.

As you know we have had a few issues with our servers recently and have been talking steps to ensure it doesn’t happen again. We are moving to a UK-based dedicated server with full support. We will be investing heavily in this to make sure we deliver the best and most robust system for our auctions. We will, of course, keep you fully informed about the switch and when it will take place.

Kind regards from Glasgow

A whisky of power, smoothness, and signature smokiness is the result.
