The Whisky Lounge “Indie is back! Whisky that is…” – Whisky News

AA Indie Whisky

With our sold-out Japan Vs Scotland now finished (look out for a post soon with the results), we are quickly onto our next series.

Some of you may remember the last time we looked at independently bottled whiskies and the fantastic tastings that ensued. Well we’re at it again.

6 whiskies assembled from 6 of the finest ‘Indie’ bottlers in the land, for your delectation.

For those of you not in the know, Independent bottlers are those that take it upon themselves to buy casks from distillers, either already having reached maturity or not, warehouse and bottle it under their own name and label. These bottlings can give a fascinating incite into the distilleries in question as they are more often not unadulterated by the likes of chill-filtration or caramel colouring.

Whisky Ramblings Via Video #107 – Scotch Whisky News

Whisky Ramblings Via Video #107

Mark Dermul, Belgian Whiskyblogger, tries a bottling from the little-know but quite large Loch Lomond Distillery. Due to the fact that they have different types of stills, they produce lots of different styles of whisky, both malt and grain. Mark tried the Inchmurrin 12 Year Old, which is not the worst offering from this Highlander he has tried so far, but is still a far cry from a good whisky, he feels.

AA WA Photo Header

Our March auction is now live and ends on Monday 6th April 2015!

View March Auction

This is an incredible auction with almost 1,200 bottles available. We have a few highlights for you this month, starting with this highly collectible Macallan 1949 Millenium Decanter, matured for an impressive 50 years.

AA WA 1

This month’s curious rarity is this Dalmore 1939 Gallie & Co, bottled most likely during the late 1940s or early 1950s, this is without a doubt a piece of liquid history from a bottler which has ceased to exist from 1975.

AA WA 2

Pappy Van Winkle has become the beacon of American whisky collecting. This month we have a great selection of the highly sought after range!

AA WA 3 PVW

For our first time we are bringing to the market a Port Ellen Feis Ile 2008, arguably the most sought after bottle of Port Ellen. This is the only official single cask Port Ellen, which yielded a mere 220 bottles! This exceptional collectible will no doubt be one to watch this month!

Littlemill 26 Year Old 1988 Old & Rare Platinum Exclusive

Specialist online whisky shop, TheWhiskyBarrel.com, today releases a new addition to the outlet’s range of exclusive bottlings.

Distilled at the lost Littlemill Distillery in the Scottish Lowlands in November 1988, we selected a 26 year old expression matured in a refill sherry hogshead cask and bottled in March 2015 by Hunter Laing & Co. of Glasgow under the company’s Old & Rare Platinum Selection label.

Littlemill Distillery was located in Bowling, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland. Established in 1772, it was one of the oldest working distilleries in Scotland, indeed one of the oldest in the world, when it closed in 1994 and was subsequently demolished in 2004.

Today, well-aged Littlemill Scotch whisky stocks are gaining a prized reputation and, of course, are becoming increasingly rare. Fittingly, just 150 bottles of this delicious golden nectar are available exclusively to customers of TheWhiskyBarrel.com. Shipping to customers worldwide including; the United States, Canada and Japan.

Tasting Notes

Nose: A light gold whisky with a nose of vanilla custard powder giving way to apples, pears and slightly leafy notes of butterscotch coming through late.

Taste: On the palate it has a creamy mouthfeel with butter shortbread at the start, followed by apple skins and a cinnamon note.

Finish: The finish is long, dry and slightly fruity, with a hint of oak.

Westland Single Malt at K&L California – Whisky News

kl_logo_trans

  • Westland Peated Single Malt Whisky 750ml ($69.99) By distilling a highly-peated single malt whisky and marrying that with an entirely unpeated single malt whisky, Seattle’s Westland Distillery has created something magically delicious, more akin to Talisker or Springbank, rather than Ardbeg or Lagavulin. The smoke and phenolic elements are definitely present, but never detract from the soft, oily fruit and the inherent creaminess of the spirit, which are definitely the stars of the show. Imagine everything you love about Longrow or Bunnahabhain, but in a different package distilled in the Pacific Northwest and that’s the Westland Peated in a nutshell. A major accomplishment for North American distilling.
  • Westland Sherry Wood Single Malt Whisky 750ml ($69.99) Seattle’s single malt sensation Westland Distillery is back with a new expression aged in sherry that mimics some of the finest and most beloved Speyside malts from Scotland’s Highland region. In the style of Macallan or Glenfarclas, the supple, soft, fudgy, cocoa flavors are more pronounced from the sherry maturation and the richness of the palate is enhanced beyond what we’ve seen in the standard Westland expression. It’s a more decadent version of what we already love about America’s top single malt distillery and an exciting glimpse into what’s promising to be a very bright future.

Cadenhead’s News – Scotch Whisky News

AA Cadenheads

Dailuaine Distillery Founded 1852 by William Mackenzie

Located in the stunning speyside region, the founder was a part owner of a much more remote distillery you might know called Talisker, William had a partner in his new venture in the form of a banker James Fleming who was also setting up Aberlour distillery around the same time.

Dailuaine is one of those malts that so many mistake for another distillery when they see it on our shop board they think it’s Dalwhinnie? (Perfect example of seeing what you want rather than what is)

The distillery was seen as a modern state of the art distillery back in 1852 it was also the first distillery in Scotland to have a pagoda roof built in 188/9 during a rebuilding period between 1884 and 1889 making it the largest in the region at that time. Sadly the original pagoda roof was totally destroyed by a fire in 1917, after rebuilding the distillery opens again in 1920.

If you like rich smooth yet complex drams then this is a malt for you.

Over the last few decades I recall anyway, we have bottled several amazing vintages from this fantastic distillery. This season sees a rather stunning wine cask matured hitting our taste buds. (Stephen at Cadenhead’s)

Creations Grey Stripe Smokey Robust 23 years old 54.3 Vol. 1991

This is a great Blended scotch from our creations range. Made with 1 Cask of Caal ila and 1 Cask of Invergordon

Grey stripe (Robust smoky embers) (Composition: Cao Ila, Invergordon)

This dram is a deep dark colour with more taste than most blends on the market if I could give it 5 stars I would. Worth mentioning this is a cask strength blend and its quite unique.

Nose: Smoke is present , fairly mellow and not attacking. Invergordon provides lots of vanilla and custard cream notes. This nose makes you want to dive in.

The Teeling Whiskey Company (TWC) has continued to build on its reputation as one of the world’s finest producers of Irish whiskey by receiving a number of significant awards from two of the world’s top spirits competitions; the World Whiskies Awards and the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

First held in 2007, the World Whiskies Awards search for the very best whiskies in the world. Teeling Whiskey Irish Single Malt was honoured with the accolade of ‘World’s Best’ and founder and MD of TWC, Jack Teeling, was awarded the prestigious title of ‘World’s Best Global Whisky Ambassador.’ Held in London, this year’s competition saw more than 300 whiskies put through their paces with three rounds of rigorous tastings, to win the coveted title of the ‘World’s Best’.

Further to this, Teeling Whiskey Small Batch has been honoured the coveted ‘Best Blended Irish Whiskey’ at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and four gold medals were awarded for the Teeling Small Batch, Single Grain and Single Malt whiskeys. As the first comprehensive, International judging competition ever to be held in the USA on an annual basis, the San Francisco World Spirits Competition is one of the most respected in the industry.

Commenting on the wins, Jack Teeling said “I am humbled to be named ‘World’s Best Global Whisky Ambassador’ but more importantly the reputation for our whiskeys continues to increase. Over the past three years, Teeling Whiskey has been embraced both in Ireland and across the world in over 35 export markets. We are extremely proud of the whiskeys we have produced to date and it is an honour for our whiskeys to be recognised as the world’s best in these two competitions. With construction of our new distillery in Dublin almost complete, we are excited to continue to provide high quality and unique expressions to Irish whiskey drinkers around the world.”

The Teeling Whiskey Company was founded by Jack Teeling in 2012 to revive his family-old trademark of Irish whiskey and bring distilling back to Dublin, where Walter Teeling had a distillery in the Liberties in the 18th century.  In January 2014, The Teeling Whiskey Company announced a €10 million investment in a new distillery and visitor centre at Newmarket in The Liberties. Work started on site in August 2014 and is on schedule to open to the public in May 2015. This will be the first new distillery in Dublin city in 125 years.
