The Macallan Rare Cask at K&L California – Scotch Whisky News

AAmacallan-rare

Macallan Rare Cask Single Malt Whisky 750ml (Elsewhere $300) ($269.99)

Macallan’s new Rare Cask uses handpicked first-fill sherry casks from the top 1% of barrels currently aging at the distillery. The result is a richer, darker, more chocolately version of Macallan with a thicker profile and a complex palate of raisins, sultana, orange peel, and ginger. With the current market craze for first-fill sherry whisky, a la Aberlour A’Bunadh and Glendronach, the Rare Cask represents an aggressive and more modern approach from the typically conservative Macallan. This is bold, chewy, full-bodied single malt that showcases the deep stocks and the immaculate wood management from Scotland’s most iconic distillery. It’s a whisky that provides a peek into the most choice sherry-aged whiskies currently available. (NOTE: The Macallan Rare Cask comes with a gift box which will ship as an additional bottle charge)

TWE Whisky Show Special Bottlings – Scotch Whisky News

twe_logo2

The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show is just a couple of days away. We’ve been preoccupied over the past few weeks getting things ready, but with one day to go, I’ve had a moment’s respite to write about the special whiskies we’ll be releasing at the show.

Stu’s already mentioned the new Elements of Islay that we showcased at Whisky Live Paris last week, along with the new Port Askaig 15yo that will be appearing online soon, but we have more new whiskies at the show.

On the show bottlings stand, we can now reveal that along with the seven new Single Malts of Scotland bottlings, we’ll also have four ‘Retro Label’ whiskies, celebrating the show – while we haven’t done specific show bottlings for the past few years, these are as close as we get.

Show Bottlings

We’re focusing on an Islay theme this year, with an 18 year old Laphroaig, a 25 year old Bowmore and a 16 year old smoky Bunnahabhain joined by an 18 year old Clynelish. Yet again, our lead designer has done a fantastic job on the labels, with the Clynelish and Laphroaig rivalling last year’s Ledaig for my favourite that we’ve done in the range.

Masterpiece

Along with those, I’ll also be pouring the latest in our Masterpieces series, as chosen by TWE Director Sukhinder Singh. This year it’s a Caol Ila 1996, bottled at a punchy 62.2%. I’ve not had a chance to try it yet (it’s going straight from the bottler to the show), but the boss’s comment was ‘boom’, which is encouraging.

Around the show we’ll have a few more TWE exclusives that will be appearing for the first time this weekend. Among them a range of Signatory Vintage bottlings that were selected during a trip to Edradour earlier this year, as well as the previously mentioned Karuizawas and Balblair 2000, and an Arran 1996 and a Glen Garioch 1973 that we are releasing in honour of our 15th anniversary – more about those on the blog soon…

The show’s dram list is now available (although still being tweaked as a few last-minute bottles are rumoured to be appearing) and there are some treats hidden in there. We might be working all weekend, but we’re looking forward to our breaks…

There are still a few tickets left for Sunday, so make sure you grab one asap.

50 YEARS OF CRAFT COMES TO LIFE WITH THE WINCHESTER COLLECTION – Scotch Whisky News

50 YEARS OF CRAFT COMES TO LIFE WITH THE WINCHESTER COLLECTION

Introducing the world’s first collection of rare 50 Year Old single malt Scotch whiskies from The Glenlivet, on sale at Harrods from October 2014

Today marks the inaugural release from The Winchester Collection: the world’s first series of rare and precious 50 year old single malt Scotch whiskies from the single malt that started it all. “Vintage 1964” is the first release from this exclusive collection, which is anticipated to become one of the most sought after and priceless whisky collections in the world.

Just 100 bottles of this remarkable Speyside single malt, priced at $25,000 each, will go on sale around the globe, with the very first bottle – Bottle No 1 – going on sale at one of the world’s most prestigious retailers, Harrods, this October. An undisclosed number of further releases from The Winchester Collection will then follow, with “Vintage 1966” confirmed to be next in line.

No expense or attention to craftsmanship has been spared in creating the perfect vessel to house the whisky, with each element handcrafted by artisans from the British Isles, featuring hand-blown glass and the inclusion of precious materials such as rose gold and ‘Cairngorm Stone’.

The spirit inside lays claim to 50 years of unrivalled knowledge, care and craft, which started when Captain Bill Smith-Grant – the last distilling descendent of The Glenlivet’s founder, George Smith – laid this whisky down to mature in April 1964.

It was soon after identified as a whisky of exceptional promise, and was cared for by no fewer than seven Master Distillers as it slowly and steadily developed the signature flavours that make The Glenlivet an enduring benchmark of quality. It is under the guidance of current Master Distiller, Alan Winchester – from whom the collection takes its name – that this precious Vintage has been deemed ready to be enjoyed by only the most ardent and discerning of single malt connoisseurs, bottled at cask strength (42.3%) in June 2014.

Winchester comments: “This release marks a milestone for The Glenlivet. Casks of this age and quality are such a rare thing these days that I’m immensely proud to introduce the first of these rare Vintages of preserved stocks from the distillery’s rich past. They’re a testament to our legacy of excellence and to those who have nurtured this whisky over the years, including Captain Bill Smith-Grant, who played such a pivotal role introducing our single malt to the world.”

Nikki Burgess, Global Brand Director for The Glenlivet, said: “The release of The Winchester Collection sets a new benchmark in single malt. We are excited to share this unparalleled spirit, the product of 50 years of craftsmanship, with whisky lovers and collectors alike. Vintage 1964 allows us to tell a new chapter in The Glenlivet’s rich history and is a fitting tribute to those who shaped Speyside’s original single malt whisky.”

About The Winchester Collection
The Winchester Collection is a series of 50 Year Old single malt Scotch whiskies, which will be released over the next few years, starting with Vintage 1964 in 2014. Taking its name from current Master Distiller Alan Winchester, this exquisite collection of rare whiskies represents the legacy of a generation of men whose unparalleled craft and skill created this, the rarest of whisky.

The Winchester Collection Vintage 1964 – tasting notes

Nose: The perfect marriage of spirit and cask releases a wonderfully rich aroma of fruity pear and peach nectar, which envelops the nose. Complemented by juicy, sweet raisins, dark chocolate and a fondant orange crème, intermingled with a tantalising honeycomb crunch sweetness that gives incredible depth.

Palate: Bursting with luscious fruit flavours of ripe pears and oranges, black cherries and smooth creamy toffee, resulting in a fantastically velvety texture. In the background, caramelised sugar and candy flavours elevate the richness of the taste.

Finish: Exceptionally smooth and luxurious, lingering on the palate and in memory for eternity.

The Winchester Collection Vintage 1964 – packaging
Bottle: Acclaimed Scottish glass artists Nichola Burns and Brodie Nairn (GLASSTORM) have created a decanter design, inspired by The Glenlivet’s glorious history.

Stopper: Completing the decanter is a jewel-like stopper, designed by internationally acclaimed silversmith Richard Fox, whose past commissions have included Formula One and Rolls Royce. The design combines precious materials such as rose gold, and is crowned with a ‘Cairngorm Stone’, often known as “The Whisky Stone” as a result of its unique colouring.

Cabinet: Designed by award-winning furniture maker, John Galvin, who has applied traditional cabinet-making techniques to a contemporary design, resulting in a beautiful, bespoke piece that will stand the test of time, just like the rare and precious liquid that is housed inside.

The Whisky Sessions

For those of you with an equal leaning towards music as whisky, we are going to be exhibiting and generally getting involved in this very exciting new project.

The emphasis is firmly on music – as you will see from the line-up, but the whisky element is equally important and as such there will be a smattering of fabulous whisky producers in the ‘Whisky Hotel’ which sits a little away from the main stages, for those who want to take it easy or ‘chill out’ I think they call it!

The event takes place on Friday and Saturday 21st & 22nd November and should definitely be worth your attention and attendance! Tickets start at £35. Click here to go to the Whisky Sessions website for more info and tickets.

McLean’s Artist Malts Launch with Multiplied Art Fair 2014, Christie’s London – Scotch Whisky News

AA Blue Arts

McLean’s Artist Malts are delighted to be launching our annual edition with Multiplied Art Fair 2014, Christie’s London, 85 Old Brompton Road.

Now in our third year, we will showcase new works by acclaimed artists Ben Rivers and Cornelia Parker RA OBE.

The whisky that we have selected for this year, is a beautiful Speysider, distilled at Benrinnes distillery in 1992 and aged for more than 17 years. Once again we have put the spirit into a second maturation process. This takes place in a smaller cask that has been finished in sherry, making every drop unique to the edition.

At M>A>M we want to push the boundaries of what an artist edition can be, by asking artists to work in conjunction with a fine whisky we take printing to a new level. Here the whisky itself, is a print that has taken years to produce. Through a process of maturation, whisky is constantly changing and evolving. Over many years the spirit interacts with the wood, the cask breaths in the atmosphere around it and exhales the impurities within. This will ultimately effect the nose, colour and flavour of the spirit. Unlike a wine, once bottled the spirit is fixed, like a time capsule the spirit will remain unchanged, secured in its age forever.

Cornelia Parker has been intrigued by this process and how time in particular effects the spirit. In a continuation of Parker’s lunar series, this latest work Blue Luna you do not get to see the spirit. Instead you are presented with an empty vessel. For Parker’s whisky remains in the cask in the highlands of Scotland. Blue Luna will be bottled upon a blue moon on the 31st of July 2015, a rare event of two full moons in one month. The total age of the whisky is stipulated on the label by full moon cycles rather than years – the final colour, nose, taste and alcohol volume of Parker’s whisky will be unknown until this special date.

As well as the final whisky filling the empty decanter, the piece will be accompanied by a photograph taken of the blue moon on the 31st July 2015, how this photograph looks is also dependent on many unknown particulars, location of the artist, weather and equipment used. What we do know is that the accompanying photograph is as mystifying as the whisky itself.

Ben Rivers widely acclaimed for his 16mm and 8mm films will be making a 16mm film as well as an etching to accompany his whisky, this will be the world’s first ‘video art whisky’ and presented together in a beautiful bespoke cherry wood box. The film, exclusive to this project features Jake William’s from Rivers award winning film Two Years at Sea, Jake who lives as a hermit in the highlands of Scotland, sings a whisky song – perhaps to be played while drinking Ben Rivers whisky.

Ben Rivers’ name uncannily resembles the name of the distillery ‘Benrinnes’, in which his spirit was created 17 years ago. Appropriating the original label of Benrinnes, Rivers has incorporated a drawing of a faceless walker, the Benrinnes label has been defaced with River’s own name and the whisky is called ‘One for the Road’.

As with each year at Multiplied we offer a very special introductory offer to the first five customers.

£1000 plus VAT includes the whisky and accompanying works. This edition is sure to be popular so please contact us to pre order.

BenRiach 17 Year Old Solstice 2nd Edition Single Malt Whisky 750ml ($99.99)
This peated, port-finished malt from Benriach is an absolute home run. It’s got rich, dark-fruited flavor and blast of campfire smoke on the finish. It’s straight-up challenge to Lagavulin 16 in style, with both the richness and the peat–and it’s better executed. Really good stuff.
