Gordon & MacPhail Glen Grant 1948 launched in Poland

Gordon & MacPhail has launched a limited edition 66-year old whisky from the Glen Grant Distillery. Only 160 numbered decanters have been released for sale.

Distilled in 1948, cask number 1369 was bottled 66 years later in 2014 at cask strength (46.6%), at natural colour and is non-chillfiltered. This unique Single Malt is presented in stunning packaging. Each decanter is numbered and comes with a special mahogany box. The box contains a book by Charles MacLean, especially written and produced for the occasion. It provides information on the project, the whisky bottled and on the history of Gordon & MacPhail.

Renowned whisky expert and Master of the Quaich, Charles Maclean describes the Single Malt: “Such scents and flavours can only be achieved by long maturation in the right cask, yet neither the aroma nor the taste has been adversely influenced by wood. The best single descriptor that comes to mind is exquisite.”

The limited edition of the 66-year old Glen Grant whisky was bottled by Gordon & MacPhail for the Polish based Wealth Solutions, a company that specialises in delivering unique spirits, collectibles and works of art to demanding connoisseurs and collectors. The whisky was officially launched on 13 May 2014 in Polonia Palace Hotel in Warsaw. The event was graced with the presence of Michael Urquhart, Managing Director at Gordon & MacPhail and Charles MacLean.

The launch of this unique whisky was preceded by a tasting of Single Malts bottled by Gordon & MacPhail, led by Charles MacLean. Participants sampled whiskies from various regions of Scotland, including five created at the now silent distilleries of Brora, Port Ellen, St Magdalene, Rosebank and Caperdonich.

The demand for Gordon & MacPhail Glen Grant 1948 has been such that all but one of the decanters was sold ahead of the official launch event. The owner of the last decanter will be selected among individuals who watched the event on-line and took part in a special contest.

Michael Urquhart, Managing Director at Gordon & MacPhail said: “The pioneering approach adopted by my father and grandfather has today provided Gordon & MacPhail with an unprecedented portfolio of greatly aged Single Malt Scotch Whiskies. As custodians of this liquid history the third and fourth generations of the Urquhart family are honoured to release this exceptional example of whisky distilled at Glen Grant Distillery in 1948.”

“I am very happy to be able to offer this unique, very rare, greatly aged Single Malt Scotch Whisky to Polish connoisseurs and collectors. It was created before man went into space and landed on the Moon, before he climbed Mount Everest. This is not only whisky, it’s a living witness to the second half of 20th century”, says Michał Kowalski, Vice-President of Wealth Solutions.

Gordon & MacPhail

Gordon & MacPhail is an independent, family-owned Scotch whisky specialist which has been based in Elgin, Moray, since 1895. Four generations of the Urquhart family have continued the tradition of seeking out the best and rarest Scotch whiskies.

Since its foundation, Gordon & MacPhail’s policy has been to send casks to distilleries throughout Scotland, fill them with ‘new make’ spirit and mature them either at the distillery of origin or in the firm’s own bonded warehouses in Elgin.

Now one of the world’s leading malt whisky specialists, Gordon & MacPhail exports to more than 60 countries. It offers more than 300 presentations of own-bottled single malts.  In 2009, Gordon & MacPhail was awarded the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade; an honour that was bestowed on the business again in 2013 with a visit from HRH The Princess Royal.

In 1993 Gordon & MacPhail purchased Benromach Distillery and re-equipped it before it was officially opened by HRH Prince Charles in 1998. A four star visitor centre is open to the public throughout the year for tours and tastings. Benromach distillery is a member of the world famous malt whisky trail.

In 2010 Gordon & MacPhail made history by bottling the oldest cask ever released – a 70 Year Old Mortlach, distilled in 1938. They followed this up by releasing 100 70cl and 175 20cl decanters of 70 Year Old Glenlivet in 2011. They have now released the remaining 100 70cl decanters from this cask.

Gordon & MacPhail is proud of its Moray roots and the company, its directors and its staff play an active role in their local community by supporting local charities and sponsoring local events.

Silent Distillery Profile; Tamnavulin – Scotch Whisky History

Tamnavulin Distillery

Silent Distillery Profile; Tamnavulin

By Lawrence Graham

Operational: 1966

Mothballed: in 1995

Region: Speyside (Livet)

Operational Owner: Tamnavulin-Glenlivet Distillery Company Limited

Current Owner: Whyte & MacKay Ltd

Address: Tomnavulin, Ballindalloch, Morayshire, AB37 9JA

If you turn to your Barnard and eagerly look up Tamnavulin Distillery, you’ll be disappointed not to find an entry and this is explained by the fact that the distillery was built in 1965/6 long after Barnard had toured the distilleries of Scotland in the late 1880’s. The name means Mill on the Hill and the Gaelic version is “Tom a’Mhulinn”.

The water source is two fold; underground springs at Easterhorn in the local hills for production providing soft water and cooling water from the nearby river Livet. Tamnavulin is the only distillery to be situated close to the river Livet.[1] Speyside distilleries generally source their water from the contorted and folded Dalradian rocks and granites of Ben Rinnes and Glenlivet. Dalradian rocks include the Grampian group made up of Psammite (impure quartzite) and Quartzite and the Appin group made up of Limestone, Quartzite and Schists & phyllites.[2]

Tamnavulin Distillery is situated close by the Tomintoul and Braeval Distilleries and the more famous Glenlivet Distillery and shares the famous Glenlivet prefix. The distillery was built between 1965 and 1966 and a short 30 years later was mothballed by the owners, Whyte & MacKay Ltd. Tamnavulin-Glenlivet Distillery was originally built by Invergordon Distillers Ltd using the same contractors, Logicon, as had built Tomintoul Distillery.[3]

The distillery was originally equipped with three wash stills and three spirit stills both fitted with normal necks. The wash stills have a capacity of 75,500 liters and the spirit stills have a capacity of 69,600 liters. The peaked canopy full-lauter mash tun is manufactured of stainless steel with a capacity of 10.52 tonnes of grist and there are eight stainless steel washbacks that hold a total of 552,000 liters of wash. The distillery can produce up to 4,000,000 liters of whisky per year.[4]

From the start of its life Tamnavulin had several ‘stable mates’ including the Invergordon Grain Distillery, the Ben Wyvis Distillery (located within the Invergordon Grain Distillery complex), Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay, the Tullibardine Distillery in Blackford, Perthshire, the remnants and warehouses of the Glenfoyle Distillery at Dasherhead near Stirling, the Deanston Distillery near Doune, the fellow Speysider Glenallachie Distillery and the nearby Tomintoul Distillery.

The current owners of Tamnavulin, Whyte & Mackay Ltd also own Fettercairn Distillery, Isle of Jura Distillery and Dalmore Distillery. In 1994 Tamnavulin was sold by Invergordon the Whyte & Mackay Ltd and the in the next year, 1995, they mothballed the distillery.

Interestingly Tamnavulin did operate briefly in 2000 for a short period. To quote Gavin Smith’s article in the fourth quarter edition of the Malt Advocate Robert Fleming, the current Manager of Tomintoul speaks of his experience at Tamnavulin Distillery;

“I’d learnt lessons from Tamnavulin,” he said. “I was there in 1994 when it was closed down. I was in charge of both Tomintoul and nearby Tamnavulin. JBB, as the company then was, took Tamnavulin out of mothballs for six weeks to make spirit in May 2000, knowing that they were selling Tomintoul and the wouldn’t have access to me and the experienced distillery staff there for much longer.

“When we shut Tamnavulin down again,” he said, “our remit was to shut it down as though it was just for a silent season. You empty all the pipe work and the storage vessels. You have it in a state that all you need to do is connect up all the equipment and go-whether it’s closed for two weeks or two years.”

There is yet hope for Tamnavulin………(subsequent to this article the distillery resumed production in 2007).

PERTH WHISKY FESTIVAL; 3 MAY 2014 – Scotch Whisky News

AA AWC 1

PERTH WHISKY FESTIVAL; 3 MAY 2014.

The first whisky festival held in Perth – as far as I know, was in my humble view, very successful. From the organisation, staff on hand, method of obtaining drams, to the people behind the whisky tables, all really well done. To be honest I had been apprehensive before going that is would be small, poorly attended due to the Speyside festival at the same time. But – how wrong I was and openly admit that, it seemed as if it had been running for years, it was that good. Organised and promoted by ExcelWines of Perth (who stock a good amount of whisky by the way!), supported by Scotland food & drink and HomecomingScotland – a good addition to “whisky month”, I will support this event anytime, via website, facebook and whisky newsletter.

Some of the names you will know; Mortlach, BenRiach, Glenglassuagh, GlenDronach, Weymss, Dalmore, Diageo, Jura, Hunter Laing, Arran, Bruichladdie, Berry Bros, Bowmore, G&M, Strathearn, and more, too many to list, sorry. A good few people I knew of course including a few who have interviews on http://www.angelswhiskyclub.com/ website. Just enough people to be busy and chatty, not too many that you could not chat to the whisky people of obtain a dram. Apart from whisky, a table with snippets of food, water aplenty, Innis & Gunn, Eden Brewery and a fair amount of gin. If I have the one moan (I am good at moaning) it was maybe; another masterclass or three would have been good. Admitted on my press ticket I did not wish to gatecrash a masterclass, so cannee tell you how they went. So, to end, many thanks Diane and Russell and all the staff from excel for a great afternoon of whisky education.

Oh, a ps; favourite drams of the day; Mortlach 15 yo. 1998 Carn Mor Strictly Limited. The Dalmore King Alexander III. GlenDronach 18 YO. Berry Brothers & Rudd 1993 Glen Keith. Glenturret 26 YO. Best blend; Lord Elcho 15 YO.

Ardbeg Day 2014

Festivities Kick Off Saturday May 31

As Canada’s first Ardbeg Embassy, Kensington Wine Market is playing host to Ardbeg Day Festivities in Calgary May 31. The distillery’s Ardbeg Day release this year is the Auriverdes, or Green and Gold. This is a nod to the World Cup of Soccer in Brazil, but also to Ardbeg’s iconic green bottle and golden nectar. The theme this year is soccer, and that will be no different here in Calgary. We’re organizing a match of Ardbeg Green vs. Gold soccer at a field near Kensington Wine Market. Participation costs $20, but will include a special t-shirt, some swag and a dram or two. Two teams of 15 will be assembled in the school yard fashion from those who register. Limited to 28 participants. It’s been a wild spring here, and in the Scottish tradition the game will go ahead come bad or worse weather!

Later in the day festivities will to the Kensington Wine Market where we’ll be hosting fun activities between 2 and 5. There Ardbeg range will be available for tasting, along with new Auriverdes and some Ardbeg cocktails. Braizen Meats will be on hand serving up BBQ and there will be fun games. Registration costs $40 and is limited to around 60 participants. You need not register for one to participate in the other. The Kensington event registration includes a cocktail and appetizers at Buchanan’s Chophouse which is hosting the after party, from 5PM on.
