THE LAKES DISTILLERY THROWS OPEN ITS DESIGNER GATES – English Whisky News

THE LAKES DISTILLERY THROWS OPEN ITS DESIGNER GATES

The highly anticipated Lakes Distillery will open on its idyllic rural site near Bassenthwaite Lake in Cumbria, with the unveiling of a pair of bespoke entrance gates designed by internationally renowned Workington-based metal work artist Alan Dawson.

The spectacular gates were thrown open on Monday the 15th of December to reveal the fruits of the distillery’s £6m investment – a world class Visitor Centre, artisan bar and bistro – The Bistro at the Distillery, and a shop selling distillery products as well as locally produced fare.

The state of the art Visitor Centre will take guests on an atmospheric tour of how the Lakes Malt, Lakes Gin and Lakes Vodka are made as well as including a visit to the distillery’s warehouse where the whisky matures. Visitors will be taken on a high definition cinematic journey following the water used within the spirits from the River Derwent as it flows down from Sprinkling Tarn through Keswick into Bassenthwaite Lake and on to the Irish Sea.  It will also tell the story of Cumbria’s most notorious distiller and smuggler Lanty Sleek, who plays a key role in the unique tour. Tours conclude in the Tasting Room where guests can raise a glass and be taken on a concluding journey of the palate.

The Bistro at the Distillery will offer delicious honest food served in relaxed but chic surroundings. Overseen by nationally renowned chef and restaurateur Terry Laybourne, the casual bar and bistro will be a vibrant eatery seating a total of 130 guests both inside and out. The bistro will also house the distillery’s Board Room, a stylish private dining area for 30 people where the casks of maturing whisky can be viewed.

The Lakes Distillery has evolved throughout an amazing three year journey and Managing Director Paul Currie can’t wait to unveil what’s behind its designer gates. Paul said:

“The Lakes Distillery is set to be a key attraction for the Lake District and we estimate that we will accommodate approximately 55,000 visitors each year.  It is wonderful to see everything come together, from the sympathetic renovation of our stunning Victorian farm and the formation of our highly skilled team, to the start of production of our spirits and the development of the menu and style of our bistro. We are so excited to open and can’t wait to see the response of our visitors.”

The Lakes Distillery will be England’s largest and is set to produce up to one million bottles of The Lakes Single Malt each year making it a veritable challenger on Scotland’s doorstep and the closest English whisky distillery to the border.

Perfectly dressed for the festive season with a 20ft Christmas tree, the Lakes Distillery will be open every day except Christmas Day. Standard tours will be priced at £12.50 for adults and £5 for 13-17 year olds accompanied by an adult.  Bespoke tours hosted by the management team are available on request.

To find out more about the Visitor Centre, The Bistro at the Distillery and all the Lakes Distillery’s products, please visit www.lakesdistillery.com.

The ONE, the Lakes Gin, The Lakes Vodka and both the Connoisseurs’ Club and Founders’ Club are available to buy online at www.lakesdistillery.com/shop

The Lakes Distillery

Close to Bassenthwaite Lake, in an area of unimaginable beauty encircled by Cumbrian fells, is the perfect home for the first-ever Lakes Distillery.

The experienced team behind the Lakes Distillery, which includes managing director Paul Currie who co founded the Arran Distillery, Master Distiller Chris Anderson with over 30 years’ experience and Alan Rutherford a former Production Director of Diageo, are renovating the historic buildings of an old Victorian Model Farm next to the famous river Derwent and close to Bassenthwaite Lake, with the aim to produce a new world-class single malt whisky.

The water from the famous River Derwent, with its source high up in the fells, a team steeped in whisky experience, and perfect conditions for distilling are set to create a very special malt.

The Lakes Distillery opened to the public in December 2014. The Lakes Single Malt began production November 2014 and will be available late 2017, and its blended whisky from the British Isles, called The ONE, the Lakes Gin and the Lakes Vodka are available to buy now.

The Whisky Exchange “Balvenie – #24×24” – Scotch Whisky News

Whisky-Exchange-Vinopolis

Balvenie – #24×24

It’s scary how many product launches happen around the festive season. Even though we expect to see lots of new bottlings appearing ready for the Christmas rush, this year has seen a surprisingly large number. However, nestled among the various launch parties last month was one event that was a little different – an evening with The Balvenie that was all about the whiskies they already have out. No new releases, no bells and whistles, just a table covered with some of the whiskies they’ve released over the past few years, almost as a quiet boast.

AA TWE 1

Quite a line-up…

Over the past couple of years, Balvenie have been having a clear-up, rearranging their whisky range. Not everything has come out the other side – with my own favourite, Signature, a casualty – but it’s now a sleeker and more consistent line-up, focused around three core pillars: single barrels, cask finishes and triple-matured drams. The latter range is exclusive to Global Travel Retail, but the first two are joined by special editions and Balvenie’s oldest regular expressions: the 30, 40 and 50 Year Old releases.

For the evening of celebration, they had put together 24 whiskies to showcase their range and how it has changed in recent times. The number of whiskies was chosen in honour of Warehouse 24, both the name of their fan club and the warehouse that hosts the famed Tun 1401, the source of some of their most lauded and best-selling drams of the past few years. Along with the core range they’d also managed to find a few older bottles, including the last two UK releases of Tun 1401 (batch 5 and batch 8), the newly released (and immediately sold out) Tun 1509, and an old bottle of Founder’s Reserve from the 1980s.

I’ve been fortunate enough to try my way through most of the Balvenie line-up, but there have been a few gaps, which I had the opportunity to fill. The first on that list is the 14 Year Old Caribbean Cask, which appeared a couple of years ago as the most recent incarnation of the rum-finished entry in the Balvenie range.

AA TWE 2

Balvenie 14 Year Old Caribbean Cask

Nose: Brown sugar, butter and nutmeg – buttered rum mix, before you add the rum. With that, there’s shortbread, golden syrup and sweet Muscat grapes.

Palate: Apples, lemons, icing sugar and brown toast, with syrup, caramel and toffee popcorn.

Finish: White toast with golden syrup, freshly sawn oak and a touch of stewed apple.

Comment: Lots of rum influence, but still run through with the classic Balvenie honey-and-malt character.

While the evening wasn’t focused on any particular new release, they did have their most recent release on the table – 25 Year Old Single Barrel. Over the past few years, Balvenie have been reorganising their whiskies into distinct groups and this 25 year old sits at the top of the single barrel range.

While the younger 12 and 15 Year Old expressions are matured in first-fill bourbon and sherry casks respectively, 25 years is a long time to sit in an active barrel. The oak influence can easily become too much, and as such the 25 year old is matured in refill casks, to allow the spirit to age without becoming swamped with wood. I’m a devotee of refill-cask-matured whisky (young and old), so made sure I grabbed a dram of this:

AA TWE 3

Balvenie 25 Year Old Single Barrel

Nose: Apple crumble, polished oak, crystallised honey, barley sugar, anise, chocolate cornflake treats and a hint of anise.

Palate: Very soft and initially sweet and buttery. Popcorn and cornflakes give way to sharp apple, rye bread and tart, stewed berries. Oaky spice grows, with some dark burnt-sugar notes.

Finish: Long, with lots of freshly milled grain, cinnamon spice and a touch of cardboard.

Comment: Exactly what I expected from a refill-matured Balvenie, which is a good thing. The distillery character is intact and propped up with balanced spice and a few darker, oaky notes.

As a final dram of the night, brand ambassador Sam Simmons rolled out something special: the latest batch of Balvenie 40 Year Old. I went to the launch of the second batch three years ago and in the meantime they’ve sold enough batches – at least seven by our count – that they’ve added it as an ongoing entry in their range. The batch number may have gone from the label, but each release is still a vatting of a small number of casks. The one we tried was put together from just nine casks, with about half of them once holding sherry.

AA TWE 4

Balvenie 40 Year Old

Nose: Buttery, full-strength rum, pine needles, bananas (both real and foam sweets), pear drops, marzipan and warm raisins. Old, waxed oak sat behind all of that, along with one of the most specific nosing notes I’ve got for a long time: buttered white toast with Vruchtenhagel (fruit-flavoured Dutch sugar sprinkles – one of my favourite things).

Palate: Toffee popcorn, cinnamon toast and raisins up front, with old oak, gingerbread, molasses, spiced cake batter and honey providing structure. Leathery notes roll in, but don’t overpower the sweeter notes. A drop of water brings out more dried fruit and turns up the spice.

Finish: Long and warming, with spicy cinnamon, bread pudding and lemon zest. As that fades, polished oak makes itself known, along with lingering sweet butter.

Comment: Balvenie can take some ageing, but as with any older whisky they need to be careful not to pick up too much influence from the oak – they’ve fallen on the right side of the line, with the oak providing gravitas without hiding the spirit’s core character.

Now that Balvenie seem to have finished rejigging their whisky line-up, it all makes sense. Not many distillers could have rolled out a tasting line-up as impressive as this, and I look forward to seeing what they do next.

Merry Christmas To All Whisky Lovers From The Malt Maniacs!

The Urban Stillhouse also expands the bourbon experience down Fourth Street, creating a density of spirits tourism locations downtown.”

Springbank Society Newsletter December 2014 – Scotch Whisky News

Springbank Society

Springbank Society Newsletter
December 2014

Greetings Society Members!

The Springbank Distillers office is filled with festive cheer as today marks the penultimate working day of 2014. To add to our excitement, the Springbank Christmas fairy dropped by earlier this morning, delivering each employee a special Springbank Organic Barley Christmas bottling – yum! All distillery and office staff will finish work tomorrow (Friday 19th December) and will return on Monday 5th January after some well deserved resting time!

We are all very much looking forward to the Christmas break after a very busy and successful year. This week, we have been doing our maths and have worked out that during 2014, the Sales Team:
• Visited 38 countries around the world
• Attended 52 festivals and shows
• Hosted 67 tastings

Tour figures have continued to rise during 2014 with over 3,800 visitors to the distillery, an increase of around 200 people from 2013. It’s wonderful to see so many people coming all the way down to Campbeltown to visit our distillery. We realise that Campbeltown is not the easiest place in the world to get to and we really do appreciate each and every one of our visitors who travel the long and winding road to see us!

During 2014, we welcomed an impressive 81 new members into the Springbank Society bringing the total number of members up to 1132. I’m delighted that there is still so much interest in our Society and look forward to getting to know all of our new members in the coming months.

I would personally like to thank all of our new and existing members for your support over the past year. It’s been a pleasure getting to know you all a little more during 2014 and also meeting some of you during distillery visits and the Campbeltown Malts Festival. I am very much looking forward to building on these relationships during 2015.

News from the Distillery

The Tun Room at Springbank received an early Christmas present last week as a newwashback was installed. Washback number 3, which has been out of operation for a few months, was completely ripped out and replaced with a brand new model. Sticking with tradition and in keeping with our other 5 washbacks, the new one is also made of boatskin larch and can hold up to 25,000 litres of liquid.

We will begin production at Springbank when we return to work in January. The first mash will be taking place on Tuesday 13th January and we’re looking forward to seeing the newwashback in operation shortly after!

Glengyle Production 2014

Our still men have been distilling up at Glengyle Distillery for the past 6 weeks. During the production this year, we did some experimenting and used Longrow style barley instead of the usual Springbank style when making the Kilkerran spirit. We were lucky enough to have a wee taste of the new make spirit and it was very tasty with the heavier peat flavours complementing the strong fruitiness. Now it’s just a waiting game to see how it matures over the next few years!

New Springbank Distillers website now LIVE!

We are so excited that the new Springbank website is now LIVE!! The super talented guys over at Glasgow-based Graphic Design Agency, MadeBrave, are the people behind the new, fresh design. If you haven’t had the chance to check out the new site yet then you can view it at www.springbankwhisky.com.

We started working with MadeBrave in the Summer of 2014 as we were looking to bring our website into the 21st century and have a site which is much more user friendly, informative and engaging. Ranald and I worked closely with the designers to make sure the story of Springbank was truly captured and we are so happy with the results. It’s great to have a website which is modern but still reflects the tradition behind Springbank and also have a site that we are not embarrassed to show our customers!

The website is responsive meaning that it can be easily viewed on all sizes of computer, tablet and mobile – cleverly shrinking to the size of screen you are using.

There are lots of great new features on the website and some of our personal favourites are:

– The ‘Events’ section – This gives details of all events and tastings that the team will be attending around the world. This should make it easier to find out if we are visiting your country or if we will be at a certain event you plan on attending.

– The ‘Where to Buy’ section – This feature is located at the foot of the home page. It is set out as a map, listing all our UK stockists as well as our distributors in around 40 countries with links to their own website or contact email address. This should make it easier for our customers to find our whisky in their country.

– The Photos – The website features some stunning shots from around the distillery which will be useful for the Sales Team to use when traveling around the world.

As well as keeping the general news section up to date with news from the distillery and new releases as they happen, we also have a dedicated news section for our special Society Members.

In this section you will be able to keep up to date with the latest special Society bottlings and be the first to find out news on upcoming releases etc. I plan to update this section quite regularly and perhaps over time, begin to use this as the main method of communication for members. It’s a much quicker way of getting news to you as it happens rather than wait until the next newsletter or newsflash is ready to be sent. Of course, when we have super important information to give you such as a new Society bottling or any new release from the distillery then this information will continue to be emailed but other day-to-day news will be added to the website.

I would urge all members to register for an online account to keep up to date with the news as it happens. Any log in details you had for the previous website are no longer in use so you will have to create a new account to do this. To create an account please follow these simple instructions:

• Go to www.springbankwhisky.com

• Click on the ‘Society’ tab along the top of the page

• Click on the ‘Confirm Log-In Details’ orange tab

• Please enter all the information that is required

• Once you have submitted this information, a notification should be displayed to tell you that an email has been sent to your given email address and it will ask you to verify this email address

• Please open this email in your email account and click the link to verify your email

• Once you have done this, I will receive a notification informing me that a new member has signed up to the website so I will then activate your account for online use

• When your account has been activated, you will be able to read all news stories in the Society section. To log in, just click the ‘Log-In to Society News’ tab where you will just be asked to enter your username and password for access.

We have had some teething problems with this section since the website went live but it should all be fixed now and you should be able to create an account quite easily by following the above instructions.

I know some members already tried to sign up while we had some problems but unfortunately the account was not able to be fully created. Please create a new account following the instructions above and it should work perfectly now.

Can I ask you to please be patient when waiting for your account to be activated. I will not be able to do this before we finish up for the Christmas holidays but have made it top priority when we return in January. There will not be any new stories on between now and then so don’t worry – you will no be missing out on anything!

Campbeltown Christmas Weekend 2014

Campbeltown recently held it’s first official ‘Christmas Weekend’ which took place from Friday 28th-Sunday 30th November.

As some of you will be aware, Springbank were one of the main motivators behind the Explore Campbeltown project (www.explorecampbeltown.com) and as well as taking care of you lovely Society Members, I’m also responsible for the administration and event organisation for Explore Campbeltown.

In 2013, we held the first, very successful Explore Campbeltown Christmas Market in the Malt Barns at Springbank Distillery and on Sunday 30th November this year, we did the same event – only on a much bigger scale! This year, both floors of the Malt Barns were used – the ground floor played host to over 50 local businesses, crafters and charity stalls while the first floor was split in two halves. Half of the floor was used as a food court with various local food producers selling hot food and we also had a dedicated seating area for people to eat and rest while they shopped. The other half was transformed into a kids winter haven with Santa’s Grotto, face painting, a nativity scene and also a very special appearance from some of the characters from the popular Disney film, Frozen. Outside we had a bouncy castle and pony trekking for the kiddies so there was plenty to keep them occupied while the parents shopped!

This year, the Christmas Market tied in with various other Christmas related events to create the first ‘Campbeltown Christmas Weekend’. Other events included the annual Campbeltown Christmas Lights Switch-On, the very first ice skating rink which was built in Burnside Square, a fantastic Firework Display which was jointly funded by the Ardshiel Hotel and Explore Campbeltown and various other smaller events taking place throughout the 3 days.

There has been great feedback on the weekend as a whole and I am looking forward to working with the various other organisers to make 2015’s Christmas Weekend even bigger and even more successful!

2015 Releases

There are three new releases due out within the first couple of months in 2015. As usual, we do not have exact release dates (you will know by now that we don’t tend to stick to time scales very well!) but as soon as I have a date then I will let you know!

The first is a brand new release – our Springbank 17 year old Sherry Wood. This whisky is bottled at cask strength of 52.3%, matured in 100% sherry casks (as the name suggests) and there are 9,120 bottles available for worldwide distribution. The price of this will be £85.00 and Society Members will not receive any discount unfortunately. The Sales Team have taken this whisky to a few shows recently and it was received very well by all who tasted it. Our tasting notes for the Springbank 17 year old Sherry Wood are:

Nose: A sherry explosion with winter fruits, spicy gingerbread and a hint of peat.

Palate: A winter warmer. Dark orange chocolate, Christmas cake and brandy snaps. Honey and spices develop over time.

Finish: The finish is long and smooth. Espresso coffee, liquorice, marzipan and sherry conclude the tickling of the taste buds.

The other two releases will be the 2015 edition of the popular Springbank 21 year old and also the new release of our Springbank 12 year old cask strength, this time bottled at 53.2%. As mentioned, I will be in touch closer to the date of release.

I think that should be you fully up to date with the news here in Campbeltown which means the only thing left for me say is that I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and New Year, filled with lots of good whisky!

Look forward to speaking to you all in 2015!

Slainte,

Mairi

Announcing The Launch of Two 50-year-olds From Balvenie – Scotch Whisky News

AA Blavenie

Identical origins. Remarkably different characters.

On 28th May 1963, one year after our Malt Master David Stewart joined the distillery, we filled two European oak hogsheads with Balvenie new make spirit.

Fifty years on, the whisky in Cask 4567 has matured into a beautiful single malt with a deep reddish hue and exceptionally full taste, characterised by dark fruits and spice. It’s a wonderfully complex and elegant single malt; a perfect example of Balvenie aged for many years in European oak.

Having sat in the same type of wood in the very same warehouse for the same 50 years, the whisky from Cask 4570 is surprisingly different. Unlike its counterpart, this lovely, complex expression has a distinctly golden hue and and a taste characterised by toffee sweetness, honey and vanilla oak.

It’s rare for any whisky to mature so beautifully over such a long period of time, but for two to do so in their own distinctive and mysterious ways, is something truly special. This extraordinary outcome is testament to both the mysterious alchemy of maturation and the traditional rare crafts that are still employed at the distillery today.

You can read the tasting notes for these two exceptional expressions here.

Slainte Mhath,

David Mair
The Balvenie Distillery Ambassador
