Glenfarclas 1966 Fino Casks at The Whisky Exchange – Scotch Whisky News

Glenfarclas 1966 Fino Casks, not your average sherry cask

The folks at Glenfarclas are best known for producing whisky of a very specific style: sherry matured. They’ve done many releases with a nod to other styles, but the core of what they do is rich and heavy whisky, showing the classic sherry-matured style. However, every now and again, they find some interesting casks and release something that shows another side of the distillery’s character. The most recent of these special releases is the Glenfarclas 1966 Fino Casks.

The type of sherry usually associated with the classic sherry-cask-matured style is oloroso, a rich and dark wine, packed with dark-fruit flavours. This character usually comes through in whiskies aged in oloroso casks, but oloroso is far from being the only kind of sherry.

AA WE 1

There’s a lot of casks in the Glenfarclas warehouse…

The three casks that were vatted to produce this release were purchased in 1966 by George S Grant, father of current distillery chairman John LS Grant, from an Edinburgh-based cask broker. They were simply classified as ‘sherry casks’, filled and then left in the warehouse to mature. Almost five decades passed before someone in the warehouse was tasting cask samples and noticed there was something different about them – they definitely weren’t oloroso casks. Research was done, and George S Grant’s extensive records pointed to a pair of sister casks, which when tasted showed the same character. The difference? The casks had previously contained fino sherry.

Fino is much lighter and typically drier than oloroso, with a zesty bite. It’s not usually matured for long, and does so without contact with the air, helping to maintain its pale colour and fresh flavour. As such, its time in a cask seasons the wood in a very different way to the heavier oloroso, giving quite a different character to whisky later matured in the cask. It’s rare to see fino casks used for whisky these days, since the Spanish export regulations changed in 1981 and forbade the use of wooden casks to transport sherry – it was these transport casks that were commonly used to mature whisky once the sherry had been emptied. The lack of detailed records before that change also means that distillers often don’t know the style of sherry that was in a cask – many fino casks have almost certainly been vatted away without anyone realising.

Fortunately someone at Glenfarclas caught these, giving us a chance to try something very different from what you might expect in a traditional, old, sherry-cask matured whisky.

AA WE 2

Glenfarclas 1966 Fino Casks, 50.5%

Nose: Almonds, vanilla toffee and honeysuckle to start, almost like a young and sweet bourbon-cask dram. Darker flavours then start to make themselves known, with nutmeg, cinder toffee and milk chocolate. Nutty and yeasty notes develop, along with citrus oil and dry toast. Sweetness builds as it sits in the glass, with maple syrup, subtle nail varnish, toffee, sweet grape skin and white pepper.

Palate: Sharper and fresher than expected from the comparatively soft and gentle nose, with old oak, leafy ferns and barrel char balanced by peach, ripe pear, boiled sweets, citrusy honey and lemon zest. More depth of flavour comes from dark liquorice and sweet woody spice.

Finish: Old oak, sharp woody spice, nutmeg and sweet butter. It hangs around for a while, with toffee and zesty citrus notes lingering.

Comment: Further demonstration that guessing what a whisky will taste like simply from the previous occupant of a cask is hard. There is some fino-sherry character to the whisky, but it’s run through with honey, toffee and fruit, with a sweetness not often found in a dry sherry. Fortunately, the wine left lots of character in the wood, which we can now taste in the whisky.

The 1966 Fino Casks is the first in a new series from Glenfarclas, celebrating the family’s history. There will be six bottlings, one for each of the six generations that have been involved with the distillery, from founder John Grant to current brand ambassador George S Grant. They’re keeping quiet on what the rest of the series will involve, but for now, this first edition is available on The Whisky Exchange website.

Marcel Siem Shows Skill and Nerve to Win the Ballantine’s Sponsored BMW Masters 2014

Marcel Siem left a huge impression on the crowd at Lake Malaren Golf Club in Shanghai yesterday [2nd November], winning the world-class BMW Masters golf tournament – a prestigious European Tour event also sponsored by Ballantine’s, the world No. 2 Scotch whisky – with true flair and style after a thrilling play-off.

The final day saw an enthralling climax to the competition as four players battled it out in the final few holes. The Tournament went to a play-off between France’s Alexander Levy, England’s Ross Fisher and the ultimate winner, Germany’s Marcel Siem.

Siem held his nerve to stay true to his game in the play-off, chipping in beautifully from 20 yards to Birdie the play-off hole. He then watched on in a dramatic ending, seeing Levy and Fisher unable to hole their Birdie attempts to take the match to another play-off hole.  Siem was victorious after an incredible four day’s golf at the challenging Lake Malaren golf course.

Siem commented: “This is a great tournament to win and I had an amazing day today. I did feel very nervous in the play-off but kept believing and managed to pull it off. So many people have supported me in my career but I would like to thank my family most for helping me become the golfer I am today.”

The dramatic tournament ended after an exciting week for Ballantine’s, following the brand’s earlier announcement of the official launch of the Ballantine’s Golf Club; a new online member’s golf club captained by world-leading golfer and Ryder Cup hero, Ian Poulter.

The Ballantine’s Golf Club is an online Members’ Club that is inspired by golf and its lifestyle, and is open to people around the world who share an appreciation of golf and a love of great whisky. By joining the Ballantine’s Golf Club, members are given free access to a range of exclusive content including golf tips from Captain Ian Poulter and other professionals, and behind-the-scenes footage from some of the unsung heroes of the sport, as well as opportunities to win VIP prizes and attend top events around the world.

Members can also watch an inspiring film that tells Ian Poulter’s own ‘Moment of Truth’ story, detailing how he stayed true to his ambitions of becoming a professional golfer after numerous failed attempts. ‘Moment of Truth’ stories were further recreated by Ballantine’s at the BMW Masters earlier in the week, when some of the world’s best golfers, including Jamie Donaldson, Liang Wen-Chong and Richie Ramsay, signed a camera with their own personal ‘Moment of Truth’ – the defining moment in their golfing career to date – with these poignant messages captured as iconic images.

Peter Moore, Global Brand Director of Ballantine’s, commented: “The BMW Masters is always a fantastic tournament, attracting the world’s greatest golfers, so it has been an honour for Ballantine’s to be part of such a first-class event for the last three years. It has also been a great opportunity for us to tell our fans in China and across Asia about the Ballantine’s Golf Club, inviting them to join us in in a place where they can share in the exclusive content that we’ve created especially for our members.” To find out more about the Ballantine’s Golf Club and become a member, please go to: www.ballantinesgolfclub.com

Andy Watts Business Man of the Year – South African Whisky News

Andy Watts Business Man 02

Making history yet again, Andy Watts, master distiller and a resident of Wellington, has been named Wellington’s Business Man of the Year, only two weeks after receiving the town’s recognition and being named Wellingtonian of the Year. It is the first time in the 30-year history of the two awards that the same person has received both in the same year.

Watts received the award from the Wellington Business Chamber who recognises and rewards individuals who have made a significant contribution to the Wellington business community.

As master distiller of the foremost whisky distillery in Africa, Watts has pioneered whisky-making in this country and in doing so has promoted the town throughout the world with the many awards and accolades the distillery and the whiskies made there (Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky and Three Ships) have garnered over the years.

“When I came to Wellington as a 21-year-old, I couldn’t have dreamt that I would make this town my home and build a career here. But for the past 30 years I have been fortunate to play a part in promoting the prosperity of the town. It certainly isn’t the same town nor is the distillery the same as it was back then. Since 1994 I have shared the vision of architect Chris de Hart to turn the distillery into the beautiful landmark it is today. We have also introduced technology that allows us to compete against the very best in the world and increased our capacity to meet the growing demand for the whiskies we produce.

“Our successes certainly didn’t come easily or without challenges. But we never compromised on our vision for the distillery nor the important role it plays in the town and to its people. Being involved in and marketing our town through our whisky is something I do with pride.”

Born in Barnsley in England, Watts came to South Africa as a professional cricketer in 1982 and while playing cricket for Boland and coaching the Hugenote Primary and High School teams, he met his future wife and decided to make Wellington his home. He not only had to get to know a new country and culture but quickly had to learn to speak Afrikaans. He found a position at the then Stellenbosch Farmers’ Winery in Paarl and in 1991 was transferred to The James Sedgwick Distillery as manager. An intensive sixth-month training programme at Morrison Bowmore Distillers in Scotland  led to Watts returning to South Africa and becoming the country’s first master distiller.

Ardbeg Supernova 55% NAS Committee Release 2014 – Scotch Whisky Tasting Note

Ardbeg logo Color Round

Ardbeg Supernova 55% NAS Committee Release 2014

Buzz Lightyear’s dram. Heavily peated. On the nose there’s lots of juniper, peat smoke and butter or perhaps more accurately fair ground soft fudge or tablet as they call it in some places. It’s a heady combination. Perhaps some slightly burnt embers from a fragrant twig? The taste is of apples (briefly), surprisingly muted peat smoke, perhaps tempered by some sweet chocolate and some of the tablet, not crystal grainy but very smooth and quite lovely. A hint of salted peanut butter (creamy not crunchy). The finish is amazingly creamy and then the peat smoke arrives to assert command (Caine Mutiny style). It’s very, very long and very, very good.

Lovely stuff and a reputation well deserved. No need for water.
