PERTH WHISKY FESTIVAL; 3 MAY 2014 – Scotch Whisky News

AA AWC 1

PERTH WHISKY FESTIVAL; 3 MAY 2014.

The first whisky festival held in Perth – as far as I know, was in my humble view, very successful. From the organisation, staff on hand, method of obtaining drams, to the people behind the whisky tables, all really well done. To be honest I had been apprehensive before going that is would be small, poorly attended due to the Speyside festival at the same time. But – how wrong I was and openly admit that, it seemed as if it had been running for years, it was that good. Organised and promoted by ExcelWines of Perth (who stock a good amount of whisky by the way!), supported by Scotland food & drink and HomecomingScotland – a good addition to “whisky month”, I will support this event anytime, via website, facebook and whisky newsletter.

Some of the names you will know; Mortlach, BenRiach, Glenglassuagh, GlenDronach, Weymss, Dalmore, Diageo, Jura, Hunter Laing, Arran, Bruichladdie, Berry Bros, Bowmore, G&M, Strathearn, and more, too many to list, sorry. A good few people I knew of course including a few who have interviews on http://www.angelswhiskyclub.com/ website. Just enough people to be busy and chatty, not too many that you could not chat to the whisky people of obtain a dram. Apart from whisky, a table with snippets of food, water aplenty, Innis & Gunn, Eden Brewery and a fair amount of gin. If I have the one moan (I am good at moaning) it was maybe; another masterclass or three would have been good. Admitted on my press ticket I did not wish to gatecrash a masterclass, so cannee tell you how they went. So, to end, many thanks Diane and Russell and all the staff from excel for a great afternoon of whisky education.

Oh, a ps; favourite drams of the day; Mortlach 15 yo. 1998 Carn Mor Strictly Limited. The Dalmore King Alexander III. GlenDronach 18 YO. Berry Brothers & Rudd 1993 Glen Keith. Glenturret 26 YO. Best blend; Lord Elcho 15 YO.

SUNTORY HOLDINGS COMPLETES ACQUISITION OF BEAM INC – Whisky News

New Company To Be Called Beam Suntory
Combination Creates World’s #3 Premium Spirits Company

Beam Suntory

Osaka, Japan and Deerfield, Illinois – Suntory Holdings Limited (Suntory) and Beam Inc. (NYSE: BEAM) today announced that Suntory completed the acquisition of all outstanding shares of Beam for $83.50 per share on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 (U.S. Central Daylight Time).

As a result of the transaction, Beam has today been renamed Beam Suntory Inc. (Beam Suntory). The new company intends to integrate the Spirits business of Suntory Liquors Limited before the end of this year. The transaction creates a company with the strong #3 position in the global premium spirits market. Beam Suntory will be headquartered in Deerfield, Illinois and led by Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Matt Shattock, who has been CEO of Beam since 2009.

Looking ahead, Beam Suntory aims to achieve growth in markets worldwide, including the United States, the world’s largest spirits market, by leveraging its combined portfolio of leading brands, and its strengthened global distribution network.

“By combining the world leader in Bourbon and Japan’s leading spirits company, we have created a stronger global business with an even better premium portfolio,” said Matt Shattock, Chairman & CEO of Beam Suntory. The company’s portfolio is led by its flagship brands Jim Beam and Yamazaki, as well as world renown premium brands including Maker’s Mark, Knob Creek, Hakushu, Hibiki, Kakubin, Teacher’s, Laphroaig, Bowmore, Canadian Club, Courvoisier, Sauza, Pinnacle and Midori.

“We believe the new Beam Suntory will grow by pursuing the global strategy that made Beam so successful,” Shattock said. “We will be focused on continuing our momentum, growing in developed and emerging markets, and building on our combined strengths. Those strengths include a dynamic portfolio across key categories, powerful routes to market and passionate people. I’m particularly excited about what brings us together – a strong cultural fit based on the entrepreneurial and innovative spirit of two companies with common values and proud heritages rooted in multi-generational family businesses. We look forward to learning from each other and to creating a future of exciting growth for our business and opportunities for our people.”

“I am very delighted with the launch of Beam Suntory, which unites Beam and Suntory’s spirits businesses, and I truly believe Beam Suntory will continue to grow strongly in the global spirits industry,” said Nobutada Saji, President and Chairman of Suntory Holdings. “Since its founding, Suntory Group has always shared the spirit of ‘Yatte Minahare – Go for it!’ in taking on new challenges, creating new opportunities, and living our corporate values. Beam’s heritage of over 200 years is also characterized by a spirit of entrepreneurialism, creativity and courageous decisions that exemplify the same ‘Yatte Minahare’ spirit. I believe this common spirit and our combined strengths will be a powerful driving force as the new Beam Suntory excites consumers around the world with our portfolio of premium brands. At the same time, Beam Suntory will remain true to Suntory’s corporate philosophy, ‘In Harmony with People and Nature,’ in developing a rich experience of life based on real needs in the communities in which we do business, coexisting with people and their nature surroundings.”

KWM Calgary- SALE, SALE, SALE… Ardbeg Day & More! – Whisky News

KWM-Header

Greeting from Scotland! I am nine days into a trip through Scotch Land! Today is Day Six of a Speyside and Highlands tour I’m guiding. At present I am writing you from beautiful Inverness, overlooking the River Ness. Before the formal tour I spent three busy days on the west coast in Campbeltown and on Islay. I haven’t had time to blog about it, though I have plenty of notes and pictures to share over the weeks ahead. You can get a taste of my travels by checking out my twitter feed: @scotch_guy. You can get a sense of some of what we’ve been doing, seeing and most importantly, tasting!

Our birthday sale is this weekend, today through Sunday. The sale is in store an on-line only. NO PHONE ORDERS! All of our wines are at least 15% off, all non-SMWS whiskies are at least 10% off, and all of our beers are 5% off. Please note this applies only to in-stock items and not special orders. Details on the whiskies discounted above 10% can be seen below along with sale rules.

Next week is a busy week for tastings. We have an exceptional Tomintoul and Glencadam tasting coming up on Tuesday for the very reasonable price of $55. We will be sampling 7 whiskies including the stunning new Glencadam 21 Year (which I sampled at the distillery Monday) and a stunning Tomintoul 1977 vintage, which retails for $809.99. We sold three bottles of it a few months ago, and we’ve just brought in the last three in the market!

On Friday night the Companions of the Quaich are hosting a special tasting with Beth Havers, brand ambassador for Glenfiddich and Balvenie. The event will feature a very cool deconstruction tasting of the Glenfiddich 15 year Solera, including 4 cask strength barrel samples of Glenfiddich. It will also include a pair of very rare Glenffiddichs including the 1987 Anniversary Vintage, $1,600.00, a couple of other expressions. Please email: scotchguy@kensingtonwinemarket.comfor more details.

Finally, Ardbeg Day is coming up in just over 2 weeks. We have some great events, prizes and whiskies on tap to celebrate the big day. Late morning there will be a friendly Ardbeg Soccer match, registration is $20 and includes a limited t-shirt, swag, and a dram or two. At 2PM, the main show, Ardbeg Day, starts at KWM. We’ll be holding festivities, games a BBQ and tasting in the back parking lot and store. This will be your first opportunity to taste the Ardbeg Auriverdes… Registration is $40, is limited to around 60 participants, and also includes a cocktail and appetizers at the Buchanan’s Chop House after-party. More details below.

I’m home Monday, and will have lots to catch up on. Please note all replies to this email will go to our web manager Christine Lunder. I hope you have a great long weekend, and be sure to check out the sale, it only happens a couple of times a year. And I hope to see you at one of the 3 great events mentioned above over the next two weeks.

Ardbeg Day 2014

Festivities Kick Off Saturday May 31

As Canada’s first Ardbeg Embassy, Kensington Wine Market is playing host to Ardbeg Day Festivities in Calgary May 31. The distillery’s Ardbeg Day release this year is the Auriverdes, or Green and Gold. This is a nod to the World Cup of Soccer in Brazil, but also to Ardbeg’s iconic green bottle and golden nectar. The theme this year is soccer, and that will be no different here in Calgary. We’re organizing a match of Ardbeg Green vs. Gold soccer at a field near Kensington Wine Market. Participation costs $20, but will include a special t-shirt, some swag and a dram or two. Two teams of 15 will be assembled in the school yard fashion from those who register. Limited to 28 participants. It’s been a wild spring here, and in the Scottish tradition the game will go ahead come bad or worse weather!

Later in the day festivities will to the Kensington Wine Market where we’ll be hosting fun activities between 2 and 5. There Ardbeg range will be available for tasting, along with new Auriverdes and some Ardbeg cocktails. Braizen Meats will be on hand serving up BBQ and there will be fun games. Registration costs $40 and is limited to around 60 participants. You need not register for one to participate in the other. The Kensington event registration includes a cocktail and appetizers at Buchanan’s Chophouse which is hosting the after party, from 5PM on.

Don’t hesitate in purchasing your Ardbeg Day tickets. Events are expected to fill quickly.

1. Ardbeg Day Soccer Match – 11:30-1:30 Saturday May 31 – Limited to 28 Participants – $20
2. Ardbeg Day at KWM – 2:00-5:00 Saturday May 31 – Limited to 60-80 Participants – $40

Whisky Sale – Independent Bottlers at Milroy’s of Soho – Scotch Whisky News

 milroysheader

This month we are celebrating Independent Bottlers here at Milroy’s of Soho. These guys go out and purchase casks of whisky from many different distilleries and bottle them under their own label. The great thing about Indie Bottlers is that they tend to bottle single cask releases which by their very nature are as unique as the oak they are matured in. Furthermore, the whiskies tend to be bottled without chill-filtration or the addition of caramel colouring, meaning you’re getting a much purer expression of the whisky in the bottle. What better way to explore Scotch whisky beyond the confines of distillery core ranges? To help you on your quest to discover the delights of Indie Bottlers we are putting on a special offer on all of our independently bottled whisky. Take a look at the highlights below or check out the full offer here.

Ardbeg 1992, 21 Year Old, Old Malt Cask

50.2%abv
was £423.95 now £350

It’s not very often we see an Ardbeg of this age on the shelves, as such we’re pretty excited about this offering from Hunter Laing & Co. To celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of the Old Malt Cask range, they have bottled this astounding Islay Single Malt. Expect all of the classic Ardbeg peatiness offset with pleasant vanilla and citrus notes. A truly phenomenal whisky!

Bladnoch 1993, Connoisseurs Choice
43%abv
was £75 now £66.95

This bottling from Gordon and Macphail represents one of the final distillations prior to Bladnoch’s temporary closure in 1993. The distillery was reopened in 2000 under new ownership who succeeded in wrestling the right to distill from the previous owners, Diageo, and produced a range of single malts. Sadly Bladnoch closed again in March 2014 and are now seeking potential buyers. This is a great opportunity to try the 1993 distillate. A mint and tropical fruit forward style of whisky with additional notes of peach and hay.

Clynelish 1993, Montgomerie’s
46%abv
was £89.95 now £72.95

Clynelish remains an enthusiast’s favourite, with its distinct flavour profile of waxy fruit and vanilla. This particular Clynelish has been bottled by Mongomerie’s – an independent bottling wing of Angus Dundee Distillers who are better known for producing the Glencadam and Tomintoul single malts. Clynelish was once known as Clynelish No.2 until the original distillery was renamed Brora in 1969. This bottling from Montgomerie’s packs all the classic Clynelish style in, with additional notes of grapefruit and green apples.

Highland Park 8 Year Old, Macphail’s Collection
43%abv
was £31 now £25.95

Unlike many of the independent bottlings we stock, this whisky is a vatting of multiple casks of Highland Park the youngest of which is 8 years old, rather than being a bottling of a single cask of whisky. Highland Park was founded by smuggler and priest Magnus Eunson, who used to hide his whisky in the church pulpit. This Highland Park boasts notes of mulled fruits, gentle smoke and stone fruit.

Inchmurrin 15 Year Old 1996, Signatory

43%abv
was £32.50 now £27.50

Inchmurrin is one of a number of whiskies produced at the Loch Lomond Distillery. At the distillery they have a number of different types of still, including Coffey Stills to produce grain whisky, traditional copper pot stills and also Lomond Stills which are essentially a copper pot still with a steel rectifying head rather than a swan neck. Signatory have bottled this 15 year old at 43%abv

BUFFALO TRACE DISTILLERY UPDATES BOURBON INVENTORY SHORTAGES – American Whiskey News

BT LOGO II

BUFFALO TRACE DISTILLERY UPDATES BOURBON INVENTORY SHORTAGES

FRANKFORT, Franklin County, Ky (May, 2014) The bourbon boom shows no signs of letting up.  At Buffalo Trace, the 228-year-old Distillery continues to take steps to mitigate the problem, but shortages still remain. About a year ago, Buffalo Trace Distillery warned consumers a shortage was looming, but many markets across the nation are just now feeling the full effects.

“We’re making more bourbon every day. In fact, we’re distilling more than we have in last 40 years,” said Harlen Wheatley, master distiller. “Still, it’s hard to keep up. Although we have more bourbon than last year when we first announced the rolling blackouts, we’re still short and there is no way to predict when supply will catch up with demand.”

Along with increased production, adding more bottling lines and hiring more people, Buffalo Trace has also hired a full-time barrel allocation manager, just as the company intended last year. The new allocation manager will balance bourbon inventory with sales volume. Monthly allocations will ensure all markets get some Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, and Blanton’s every month, preventing long periods of time when these brands are unavailable.

“We taste, approve and bottle what barrels we have available each month. There are shortages, because Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, and Blanton’s sell out quickly, but no shortage should last more than one month before reinforcements arrive,” said Kris Comstock, bourbon marketing director. “We’re asking for continued patience from our fans. The recent surge in demand is quite flattering, but we just need to keep in mind these bourbons were put into the barrel many years ago.”

Comstock added that other highly allocated whiskeys such as Pappy Van Winkle and the Antique Collection will continue to be released annually every fall.

Despite the increase in distillation over the past few years, bourbon demand still outpaces supply. The overall bourbon category is experiencing 5% growth, but premium brands are up nearly 20% from last year. Bourbon must be matured in new oak barrels and Buffalo Trace ages many of its barrels for eight to ten years, and some over two decades. That’s a long time to wait for a bottle of bourbon. Not to mention, with the amount of bourbon lost to evaporation over time, barrels are half empty after ten years. The increase in sales, coupled with the aging process and evaporation loss, leads to a shortage with no end in sight.

About Buffalo Trace Distillery

Buffalo Trace Distillery is an American family-owned company based in Frankfort, Franklin County, Kentucky. The Distillery’s rich tradition dates back to 1786 and includes such legends as E.H. Taylor, Jr., George T. Stagg, Albert B. Blanton, Orville Schupp, and Elmer T. Lee.  Buffalo Trace Distillery is a fully operational Distillery producing bourbon, rye and vodka on site and is a National Historic Landmark as well as is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
