Ballantine’s Renews Sponsorship of Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open – Scotch Whisky News

Ballantine’s Renews Sponsorship of Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open

Ballantine’s, the No.1 whisky in Europe and the No.2 ultra-premium and prestige Scotch whisky range in Asia-Pacific, has reinforced its association with golf by renewing its sponsorship of the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open for a further two years.

Recognised as of one Scotland’s most iconic golfing events, this year’s Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open will take place from 11-14 July 2013 at Castle Stuart Golf Links in Inverness – close to Ballantine’s spiritual home, the Glenburgie Distillery – for the third year in a row.

The news of the brand’s extended golf sponsorship follows the hugely successful 2013 Ballantine’s Championship, which took place in South Korea last month and was won in style by Australian Brett Rumford after an exciting three-way playoff. Rumford went on to win the Volvo China Open the following week, becoming the first Australian in 41 years to win back-to-back European Tour titles.

The global reach of the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open was a significant factor in Ballantine’s decision to renew its sponsorship, with the key objective of building brand awareness in key markets worldwide while also strengthening the brand’s golfing association. Ballantine’s presence at this year’s tournament will include branded bars for spectators, prominent on-course signage and player awards, including a bottle of Ballantine’s 12 Year Old for an eagle on the 12th hole and a bottle of Ballantine’s 17 Year Old for the lowest daily round.

Ballantine’s Global Brand Director, Peter Moore, comments; “Ballantine’s and golf share a strong historical and geographical heritage that continues to leave a lasting impression on the world, so we’re delighted to be extending our support of the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open for another two years. This prestigious tournament highlights to the world the connection between Scotland and golf and, with our sponsorship, we aim to celebrate the core values that Ballantine’s shares with this great sport; integrity, originality, inner strength and tradition.”

Last year’s Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open winner, India’s Jeev Milkha Singh, clinched the title in a closely-fought final round against Italy’s Francesco Molinari. He was rewarded for his outstanding performance with a coveted bottle of Ballantine’s 30 Year Old in the tournament’s landmark 30th year. The 2013 tournament is expected to attract a world-class field once again, following the participation of golf stars such as Padraig Harrington, Luke Donald, Phil Mickelson and José María Olazábal in the 2012 Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open.

Ballantine’s association with golf started in 1960 when the first Ballantine’s Tournament took place at Wentworth Club. More than fifty years later, Ballantine’s is the title sponsor of the high-profile Ballantine’s Championship, one of Asia’s leading golf tournaments and part of the prestigious European Tour, and has been an official sponsor of the Scottish Open since 2007.

Sentebale Royal Salute Polo Cup Celebrated with Royal Flair – Scotch Whisky News

Sentebale Royal Salute Polo Cup Celebrated with Royal Flair

Today marked the conclusion of Prince Harry’s tour of the United States, culminating with the Sentebale Royal Salute Polo Cup in Greenwich, Connecticut. There was Royal jubilation as The Sentebale Land Rover team was victorious in a close match, which saw Prince Harry scoring the winning goal. The Sentebale Land Rover team took home the trophy, which was presented by Christian Porta, Chairman and CEO of Chivas Brothers and top model Karolina Kurkova, with a victory of 4-3 over the St Regis Team. As the final amounts are being tallied at the end of the event, Sentebale have already reached a record breaking target of over 1 million U.S. dollars.

This year’s Polo Cup, the third consecutive partnership for Sentebale and Royal Salute, again drew a high profile crowd who travelled from all over the world to gather at the renowned Greenwich Polo Club, owned by businessman, art collector and polo patron, Peter Brant. Distinguished guests included His Grace Torquhil Ian Campbell, the 13th Duke of Argyll.

Greenwich and New York’s most influential figures also attended the Cup, including Karolina Kurkova and her husband Archie Dury, Olivia Palermo and boyfriend Johannes Hueble, Fashion designers Valentino and Jason Wu and TV host Gayle King who eagerly watched the Royal, and Argentine polo great, Nacho Figueras, battle it out on the field. Royal Salute Polo Ambassador and Captain of the Sentebale Land Rover team Malcolm Borwick scored lead the team to an impressive victory.

Speaking of his work for Sentebale, Prince Harry commented: “It is wonderful to be here at Greenwich Polo Club in Connecticut for the Sentebale Royal Salute Polo Cup 2013. The success of our three previous polo events has helped Sentebale make a real difference to the lives of vulnerable children in Lesotho, the Mountain Kingdom of southern Africa.”

Malcolm Borwick, Captain of The Sentebale Land Rover Team and Royal Salute Ambassador commented: “I feel very privileged to be playing polo in support of Sentebale; I admire what the charity is doing for the children of Lesotho. It is a great honour to play alongside my friends here in the USA. The Royal Salute World Polo Series has an ever increasing presence globally and events like this showcase what the brand is doing to raise the international profile of the sport, alongside great causes like Sentebale”.

Christian Porta, Chairman and CEO, Chivas Brothers commented: “Royal Salute is honoured to be partnering with Sentebale for the third year, and to see The Sentebale Land Rover team take the title. Royal Salute has a fantastic presence in the USA, with the Royal Salute Jubilee Cup also played at Greenwich Polo Club in September. The exhibition of skill and craftsmanship we have seen today is a testament to the support and success of polo on the East Coast. We are delighted to extend Royal Salute’s commitment to international polo here in America”.

The tournament is the fifth fixture in the Royal Salute World Polo Series for 2013, showcasing the brand’s commitment to the most prestigious international polo events across the Americas, Asia Pacific, Europe and the Middle East.Notes

Longest Serving Female Employee Celebrates 45 Years – Scotch Whisky News

Chivas Brothers’ longest serving female employee has celebrated 45 years working for the company in Dumbarton. Jacqui Farquhar (60) joined the company in 1968, after a summer holiday turned into a permanent move.

Jacqui, who is originally from the Isle of Mull, explained: “My sister and her husband lived in Dumbarton, and when I left school at the age of 15 I went to stay with them for the summer. My brother-in-law asked what I wanted to do with my life and I admitted I didn’t know, so he suggested I go to the local distillery and enquire about vacancies. I filled in an application and by the time I arrived back on Mull there was a letter waiting for me, inviting me to an interview with Hiram Walker, as the company was then known.”

Jacqui began working in the mail room at the company’s High Street offices. Three months later a job came up as a Lab Technician, and Jacqui jumped at the chance for a change of scenery. She has worked in Quality Control ever since, nosing and testing samples of spirit before it is bottled, and checking all labels and packaging are correct.

She said: “I enjoy my work – that’s why I’ve stayed all these years. Even now every day is different. One of my fondest memories is the time I went to South Korea to help test samples out there. I also remember when we won the Queen’s Award for Industry in 1968 and were each given two half-bottles of whisky as a present!”

“I’ve seen a lot of changes over the years, but they’ve all been for the better. I’m a whisky drinker myself – Scapa 16 Year Old is my favourite – so it’s amazing to see how whisky has grown and how many countries our products are shipped to now.”

As well as being a member of the Chivas Brothers sailing club, Jacqui has been a Scout leader for 40 years, is a Church Elder at the West Kirk in Dumbarton, an RNLI volunteer and Christian Aid fundraiser. She also enjoys helping out on her brother Iain’s farm on Mull, particularly during the lambing season and at harvest – when she drives tractors.

This and That at K&L California – Scotch Whisky News

1990 Mortlach 22 Year Old K&L Exclusive Chieftain’s Single Sherry Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky 750ml ($169.99)
If you’ve ever taken a sip of Johnnie Walker Black then you’ve tasted Mortlach whisky. The Speyside distillery is one of Diageo’s most-prized institutions, creating richly-textured whiskies that provide the backbone to many of its legendary blends. Yet because the whisky isn’t sold as a single malt in the United States, the name Mortlach doesn’t necessarily stir the emotions of the whisky-loving faithful. But there’s another reason Mortlach hasn’t achieved stardom abroad: most of what does make it to the States, under the guise of an independent label, is unsherried. To drink Mortlach out of an unsherried hogshead barrel is like drinking Laphroaig without peat or Macallan without richness. It’s not at all representative of what the distillery does best. Nevertheless, the occasional hogshead makes its way over every now and again, devoid of the toffee, the cake, the spice, and the power. It’s no wonder that these oddballs have done little to boost the distille ry’s rep. On our last visit to Scotland, however, we finally found a prize worthy of purchasing: an ancient, first-fill sherry cask of delicious, traditional, full-throttle Mortlach. Think Macallan 18 on steroids: big, opulent, dense, chewy, meaty, caramel, fudge, baking spices, herbaceous notes, and cakebread. Considering that Macallan 18 just took another price increase, this Mortlach looks like a super value. We’ve never found a cask of Mortlach this good, and we don’t expect to again. Just make sure to add water!

 • Glengoyne 21-year-old Single Malt Whisky 750ml ($99.99)
What a steal…

1991 Cambus 21 Year Old K&L Exclusive Signatory Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Grain Whisky 750ml (Pre-Arrival) ($99.99)
Here we go! After two years of hunting for a replacement to our wildly successful single grain Girvan, we’ve finally found a cask of grain worthy of our discerning customers. Cambus is among the most difficult-to-find grain distilleries, for a couple of reasons: it’s been closed since 1993, and it’s rumored to be at the heart of the Johnnie Walker Blue bottlings. No surprise that it’s difficult to find–if Diageo is relying on this whisky to produce one of its most sought-after blends, it will certainly be controlling as much stock as possible. Occasionally, small lots slip out of the blender’s grasp and into our glass! Here we have a super-high quality grain in all its awkward splendor. This nose is all oak spice and vibrant fresh fruit. Clove, coriander, freshly grated nutmeg, apple skins, under-ripe mango. On the palate, the fruit takes over, plus vanilla cake frosting, and the baking spices remain subdued, with a bit of coconut and some fresh oak notes. A perfect example of why sometimes, we must not blend all of the grain. (David Othenin-Girard, K&L Spirits Buyer)

• 1997 Laphroaig 16 Year Old K&L Exclusive Signatory Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky 750ml (Pre-Arrival) ($99.99)
We love Laphroaig. Everybody loves Laphroaig (if they don’t hate it). Not a lot of people on the fence regarding Laphroaig. That’s why it’s really hard to get. It’s really expensive as well; this is both cause and effect. We’ve seen prices go up, while quality has remained consistent. We took on a middle-aged Laphroaig last year and sold it for what seemed like a reasonable $140. Now we have another cask of Laphroaig and it’s difficult not to oversell it. If we’re always so effusive about every whisky we taste, people start to question our judgment. So, I’m just going to say that this is top-tier Laphroaig. It’s in that prime moment between the intensity of a young Laphroaig and that depth of the older offerings from this legendary distillery. This was the whisky that we spent time wringing our hands about because we were expecting to be paying the same price as our 18 year from 2012, but somehow we were able to get the price down to something far more reason able. It won’t last, and it will go up significantly after the pre-arrival campaign is finished. Don’t miss it! (David Othenin-Girard, K&L Spirits Buyer)
