Kensington Calgary “Malt Messenger 2013 Christmas Gift Guide” – Whisky News

Can you believe there is just five days until Christmas? Where has the year gone? 2013 is winding down and yet in some ways things are just gearing up. Our exclusive Glendronach and Kilchoman single casks have just arrived in Alberta. The first bottles of our very tasty Glendronach 2002 KWM Cask 708, $104.99, matured in a PX Sherry Puncheon landed in store last week and 120 bottles sold in just 36 hours. More of our Glendronach arrived in the shop on yesterday, along with the first traunche of our very peaty new Kilchoman 2008 KWM Cask 326, $119.99, matured in a First Fill Bourbon. With the mercury having plunged again both of these cask strength drams will be sure to keep you warm and your spirits high over the Holidays. Both whiskies are currently in stock and open for sampling at KWM.   

Lots of exciting new whiskies have come through our doors since the Fall Single Malt Festival in Mid-November. There is of course the “That Boutique-y Whisky Company” range of Malts from Master of Malt. We selected seven whiskies from the range to be offered exclusively for sale in our store from the Bowmore, Caol Ila, Clynelish, Glenfarclas, Highland Park, Macallan and Springbank distilleries. Master of Malt has taken a different approach with these whiskies, bottling them in 500ml bottles without age statements and with quirky labels that poke fun at the industry. Over the last few weeks we’ve also been phasing into our stock a range of whiskies from independent bottler Wilson & Morgan. We’ve had some really interesting whiskies from Wilson & Morgan over the last year including a Port Ellen 30 Year and a North British 50 Year grain whisky. We rolled the dice on the current batch of Wilson & Morgan, buying without sampling them first, and we were handsomely rewarded. Three of the new releases are stunning: the Caol Ila 30 Year, $457.99, is the closest thing to Port Ellen I’ve ever tasted that wasn’t Port Ellen; the MacDuff 32 Year, $409.99, is a brilliant older dram with layers of tropical fruit; and the Bowmore 22 Year, $214.99, finished in a PX Sherry Puncheon is one of the sweetest, richest, and most fruity Bowmores I’ve ever had. It is litterally flying off the shelf, we sold 15 bottles at a tasting in November. Last week we held a tasting with 7 whiskies from the range, and they all showed very well. Our Winter 2014 tasting schedule is also out, with another tantalizing line up of events. Beginning January 16 with the 3rd Annual MS Calgary Whisky Festival, and winding up with Ancient Malts in March, where we will sample the Glendronach Recherche 1968, $4799.99. January 25th is our 9th Annual Scots Wha Hae: Robbie Burns Supper at Fort Calgary. Our special guest this year is Peter Currie of Duncan Taylor. Other notable events include the Compass Box Whisky Dinner at Buchanans Chop House February 4, where we will sample some new releases including The General and Peat Monster 10th Anniversary. Later in the month we are putting on The Great Macallan Vertical Featruing Macallan ‘M’ on the 13th. The Macallan ‘M’ is a limited edition releases of Macallan bottled in a Lalique crystal decanter, retailing for $3,799.99. Our Latest Kilchoman Cask

In store on Wednesday our Kilchoman 2008 Cask 326, 1st Fill Bourbon Barrel

Our third Kilchoman cask made its debut at our Happy Hour Kilchoman Tasting during whisky week in November. Selected by myself, Hunter and an unable customer of Irish origin this is our oldest Kilchoman cask to date, from a First Fill Ex-Bourbon barrel. Our previous casks sold out in no time flat, don’t delay in popping by to give it a sample and maybe pickup a bottle or two.

Kilchoman 2008 KWM Cask 326 – 60.1% – 5 Year – First Fill Ex-Bourbon – Andrew’s Tasting Note: “Nose: creamy and toasty, vanilla bean, some agave-like floral notes and barley sugars; Werther’s Caramels, briny smoke, green grasses, lemon drops and heather honey; Palate: a surge of smoke, salt and earthy peat: as the palate adjusts heather honey, dark spices and peat oils emerge; barley sugars, green grasses and barbecued fish; Finish: long and chewy with dark peat and salt lingering the longest as the barley sugars and citrus fade. – $119.99

That Boutique-y Whisky Company

An exciting range of whiskies exclusive to Kensington Wine Market in Canada from Master of Malt

Each of these exciting new whiskies is bottled with a label unique to the whisky’s batch. All of them are playful jabs and Scotch whisky industry inside jokes. The range is exclusive to Kensington Wine Market in Canada. Only 24 bottles of each whisky came into the market. The tasting notes below are courtesy of Curt Robinson at www.allthingswhisky.com. I didn’t have time to write up my own notes with the Holiday Season in full swing, so Curt let me steal his:

1. Master of Malt Bowmore Batch 2 – 49% – 292 Bottles – Inside Joke on the Label: Bowmore had converted one of its warehouses into the first and only swimming pool on Islay. – Curt Robinson’s Tasting Note: “Nose: Sweet nose with a great composition. Tangy jam note. Peach, orange and lemon. Warm leather and a very inviting salty note (makes the mouth water just inhaling it). A touch of oil. Palate: Smoke and earthy notes. Hay. A mix of green and purple grapes. Walnut. Old school heft and some moderately subtle sherry-like tang. Tart marmalade. – $144.99
2. Master of Malt Caol Ila Batch 1 – 45.8% – 732 Bottles – Inside Joke on the Label: The 6,000 deer of the Island of Jura are invading Islay for its peat across the Sound of Islay as seen from the still room at Caol Ila. Curt Robinson’s Tasting Note: “Nose: Prickly and briny. Peat and smoke. Sweet and citric at the same time. Orange oil. Olives. Candy sweetness. A dusting of salt and pepper. Palate: Very Caol Ila. Some melon with citrus. Toffee and smoke. Oyster with salt, pepper and lemon. Wet rock. Ocean shoreline. oil. There are some notes that make me think of Kilchoman (if that distillery’s malt were a little more mature).” – $151.99
3. Master of Malt Clynelish Batch 2 – 50.6% – 319 Bottles – Inside Joke on the Label: The young cat represents the new distillery and the black cat the old which was renamed Brora for the few short years it remained open. – Curt Robinson’s Tasting Note: “Nose: Lavender and perfume. Some pepper. Nougat and honey. Lemon poppyseed muffins. A little orange juice. Palate: Wow!! Old wax and dunnage warehouse. Just extinguished candle. Oil lamp. Charred oak. Some smoke. Sooooo old school. Cinnamon. Apple juice and skins at the back end. One of the all time great palates. Loved it.” – $152.99
4.Master of Malt Highland Park Batch 1 – 44.7% – 241 Bottles – Inside Joke on the Label: The depiction is of a group that took part in a tasting at Maltstock near Nijmegen. The legend of all the participants can be found on the back. Charlemagne, who had connections to the area is also on the label presiding over the tasting. – Curt Robinson’s Tasting Note: “Nose: Sweet nose with a great composition. Tangy jam note. Peach, orange and lemon. Warm leather and a very inviting salty note (makes the mouth water just inhaling it). A touch of oil. Palate: Smoke and earthy notes. Hay. A mix of green and purple grapes. Walnut. Old school heft and some moderately subtle sherry-like tang. Tart marmalade.” – $170.99
5. Master of Malt Macallan Batch 3 – 43.4% – 245 Bottles – Inside Joke on the Label: Macallan has the smallest stills in Scotland. – Curt Robinson’s Tasting Note: “Nose: Bread dough. Nice spices..and lots of ’em. Some apple pie, heavy on the cinnamon. Some old library notes. Buttery sauce. A little atypical of Macallan. Palate: Creamy and spicy. A fair bit of dry oak. Over-toasted marshmallow. Grape skins. Bitter chocolate. Fairly tannic. Zippy with spice and very pleasing apple notes.” – $175.49
6. Master of Malt Secret Distillery 1 Batch 1 – 55.4% – 486 Bottles – Inside Joke on the Label: The warehouse depicted can only be Glenfarlcas. The red warehouse door and tracks on the floor as well as the distinct ceiling give it away. – Curt Robinson’s Tasting Note: “Nose: Tobacco and raisins. Cinnamon and fresh scones. Some floral notes. Baking spices. Fudge and caramel macchiato. Honey. Creamy caramel with fruit. Rich, rich, rich. Palate: Surprisingly tart up front. Followed by big, dark intimidating fruitcake notes. Then some apple. Think a’bunadh meets amaretto with a wee splash of Southern comfort. – $151.99
7. Master of Malt Springbank Batch 2 – 53.1% – 450 Bottles – Inside Joke on the Label: Neil and Joel from www.caskstrength.net are opperating Springbank’s antique milling equipment. – Curt Robinson’s Tasting Note: “Nose: Pickle. Dust and pine. A bit of peat, yeah. Flinty. Winter wood fire. Clove and pepper. Pine sap. So odd…so unique…so intriguing. Palate: Now there’s the smoke. Kinda oily. Notes that should only be found in older whisky (wonder how old this actually is). Some great sweetness meets the machine smoke. Some figgy notes with honey. Smoked fruit skins. Pear, apple and currant. – $159.99 

New Whiskies from Wilson & Morgan

We have a great new range of whiskies from Wilson & Morgan including a pair of Bowmores, a stunning tropical MacDuff and a Port Ellenesque Caol Ila 30 Year

These whiskies all showed really well at a tasting last week. I’d love to get some tasting notes out on these, but the season being what it is timing did not permit. The Bowmore 22 Year has been a huge hit, and is already half sold out. 10/12 bottles of MacDuff have sold, it is a stunning, creamy, tropical dram. And the Caol Ila is a real curiosity, the most Port Ellenesque single malt I’ve ever sampled, that is not in itself a Port Ellen. Caol Ila’s of this age aren’t particularly common either, making this a rare malt in its own right.

1. Bunnahabhain 2001 Sherry Wood 2nd Edition – 46% – From the Distillery: “In the same style of the previous release, which was as creamy, honeyed and fruity as a single malt can be, this new release of unpeated Bunnahabhain is a treat for whisky lovers with a sweet tooth. Twelve years in fresh oloroso butts have imparted huge character and body to the malt, which is now rich, intense and mouth coating, with a sweetness that would be considered extreme if it weren’t so well balanced by spicy notes of mustard and pepper, and just a touch of winey character. At the nose it has a fragrant profile, rich in aromatic herbs like chamomile and genepy, a trait which is also found in the endless and increasingly peppery aftertaste. A very classically-styled sherry matured malt!” – $78.49
2. Clynelish 1997 Marsala Finish 2nd Edition – 46% – Finished in Marsala Casks – From the Distillery: “Every year our customers seem to enjoy our Marsala finished Clynelish so much, that we run out of stock with every new release in so little time! So, following on the tracks of last years’ edition, we are happy to offer you more of the same delicious specialty that Wilson & Morgan is so proud of. What more can be said about the effect of Marsala casks on Clynelish, other than it’s a brilliant match? At the same time sweet and dry, creamy and nutty, it’s a robust yet delicate malt. The array of contrasting aromas (chestnut honey, wax, mustard, red apples, pears, dried hay) will win your heart at the first sip: have a taste for yourself, and discover why everybody loves our Marsala finish!” – $78.49
3. Bowmore 15 Year Cask 800040 – 61.3% – Distilled 1998 – Finished in a Sherry Butt – From the Distillery: “Quite an extreme Bowmore, and not only for the alcohol level! Compared to the sherry finished Bowmores we bottled in the past two years, this expression is not as influenced by the wine and stays truer to the style of the distillate: sharp as a blade, very citrusy and dry. At the nose, it starts with only a hint of peat, then it strikes with two completely different souls: it’s alternately buttery/biscuity and lemony! On the palate the lemony side dominates, for a pleasantly sour and very salty note: margaritas? Water may make it more gentle, but even so it remains almost tingling in its metallic dryness. The finale is dry and slightly astringent, with the smoke and a touch of leather becoming more evident.” – $139.99
4. Glen Keith 21 Year Cask 89650 – 50% – Matured in a Sherry Butt – Distilled: 1991 – From the Distillery: “As delicate as a single malt whisky can be, a velvety caress… Few whiskies are so rounded, soft and creamy: a rare example of flavour intensity without aggressiveness, with an alcohol content which is almost not perceivable. At the nose it’s characterized by heather and orange blossom honey, a malty fragrance and a hint of smoke. But it’s the mouthfeel that conquers: absolutely delicate, buttery and smooth… and yet with a robust body and an almost syrupy thickness. This is not a lightweight whisky: on the contrary it’s quite flavourful, but it never bites. Extremely long finish on cereals, honey, sugar coated ripe bananas and apples. Very elegant, juicy, biscuity… without ever becoming too overwhelming. A rich and silky malt.”- $182.49
5. Bowmore 22 Year Cask – 46.8% – Distilled: 1990 – Finished in PX Sherry Puncheons – From the Distillery: “While our recent Bowmore 2001 had only a hint of PX, this older expression goes the whole way thanks to a longer period of finishing. It’s obvious from the nose: rhubarb and quina liqueur, cola nut, dried raisins, sweet tea dominate at first… and only after a while organic notes of leather and moderate peat start to emerge. At the palate it shows loads of sugarcane, coffee and once again cola. Then it gradually becomes more balsamic, with restrained medicinal notes of peat and camphor. Its sweetness is huge but never cloying, thanks to a fresh and piquant character. The sweet and spicy character lingers persistently in the mouth, and the finale is reminiscent of aged juicy Demerara rum.” – $215.99
6. MacDuff 32 Year Cask 3609 – 46.9% – Distilled: 1980 – Matured in a Sherry Cask – From the Distillery: “Our Macduff bottled last year from the same vintage (cask #6886) sold out fast, but luckily we had a sister cask in store! Once again, it’s a very rich, deep, intense old malt… only, this time it’s much more wood-driven: the impressive array of tropical fruits (banana, mango, passion fruit, and this time even grapefruit and a hint of green apple at the attack) is still at the forefront, but it’s immediately obvious both at nose and palate that it has to fight hard with equally intense oak, liquorice, strongly brewed black and red tea… and even a hint of unflavoured pipe tobacco. The final result is still very fruity but not as sweet as expected, and particularly spicy, balsamic and very herbal, too. Powerful!” – $409.99
7. Caol Ila 30 Year Cask 1096 – 57.5% – Distilled:1983 – Matured in a Sherry Butt – From the Distillery: “It’s rare to find old an Caol Ila, since most of them are usually appreciated in their teens, when the Islay aromas are bold and fiery and the clean and maritime strikes the palate as smoky yet refreshing. And yet, at times it pays to wait longer… Slowly savour its elegant aromas: mineral, with a slightly citrusy note and just a touch of beeswax and medicinal herbs. So clean after all these years! If at the nose it’s fragrant but comparatively delicate, in the mouth it explodes with vibrant smokiness, and yet it’s not brutal. After 30 years in a refill cask, if you close your eyes it almost reminds of a Port Ellen: so rich and intense, but enveloped in a creamy and velvety caress.” – $457.99

2. MS Calgary Whisky Festival – Tickets are now on sale for the 2014 MS Calgary Whisky Festival at the Epcor Center on Thursday January 16, 2014 at 6pm. 100% of the proceeds raised are going to the MS Society of Calgary and Southern Alberta. Tickets for this event are only available through the MS Society of Calgary and Kensington Wine Market. Last year’s event featured 25 different exhibitors and more than 150 different whiskies. This year’s event will be even bigger and better! Three Master Classes, to be announced at a later date will be offered before and during the event at an additional cost of $20/each. Master Class tickets will go on sale in December. Physical tickets for the Festival and the Master Classes will be mailed out, or made available for pickup in December. Please note these tickets are NON-REFUNDABLE, and NO Store Credit will be issued on cancellations. If you find you cannot attend, you can give your ticket (s) to someone else. 8. The Great Macallan Vertical Featuring Macallan ‘M’ – The Macallan 1824 “M” is about to be launched in Alberta. This ultra-premium Macallan has been bottled in a specially designed Lalique Crystal Decanter inspired by the six pillars of the Macallan brand. As soon as we heard about it, we had to open one, so we’ve booked the Southern Alberta Pioneers Hall for a special tasting. 9. Lost In Translation – For nearly 100 years the Japanese have been making whisky in the Scottish style, albeit with their own twist. Their reputation is soaring, as some of their whiskies are among the finest in the world. Tue Feb 18 7:00pm – $40

2. Master of Malt Macallan Batch 3 – Independent bottlings of Macallan are rare, rarer still are ones such as this with a quirky label highlighting the distillery’s short statured stills. – $175.49
3. Cadenhead Dalmore 1988 – Unlike any Dalmore you will have ever tried this pale looking malt is very creamy and tropical with a long delicate finish. You won’t find any Matusalem Oloroso Finessing in this tasty treat, nor will you find any caramel. It is bottled without colourin g or chill filtering. – $169.99
4. Kavalan Solist Vinho – I poured this blind at a tasting about 6 months ago that was attended by four older Scotsmen. It was by far the most popular whisky, including with said Scotsmen. When I revealed what it was they weren’t surprised, they were angry. This four year old American wine cask matured whisky is like a 20+ year old first fill sherried malt from the Speyside. This massively fruity whisky with big tropical fruit notes is bloody close to the Black Bowmore in quality, but at a quarter the price if you could even find a bottle of the latter. – $1169.99

  • 1997 Bowmore 15 Year Old Faultline “Palm Tree” Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky 750ml ($99.99)
    This cask, from one of the true historical gems on the Queen of the Hebrides, is the perfect example of why I believe Bowmore should still be considered one of Scotland’s best distilleries. The distillery itself is a working museum and the distillery bottlings are usually very safe and well crafted. After some “difficulty” at the distillery during the 80s and early 90s, speculation is that they were pushing the distillery to hard. Since then the Bowmore distillery has come roaring back producing some of the most consistently delicious juice we’ve tasted over the last several years. It’s not in their nature to take risks or challenge the market place, but it’s certainly in ours. Part of the reason we haven’t been able to sell a Bowmore under the Faultline label yet is that when it’s good, it’s obvious. The bottlers are coveting their stocks and that means that highend product from the 70’s which cost $300 two years ago , is going for $900+ today. We’re not buying that stuff because there’s just no way we could sell it all. Suppliers see those numbers, look at their young Bowmore stocks and salivate. We were incredibly lucky to find this medium aged Bowmore at this fabulous price. This is full force Bowmore in all its beautiful intensity. It’s powerfully smoky and exotic. The label pays homage to a famous independently bottled Bowmore from the 1960s.
  • 2002 Royal Lochnagar 10 Year Old Faultline Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky 750ml ($59.99)
    This delicate little Lochnagar is basically one of the few independently bottled around Lochnagar and one of the only cask strength version on the market in the US, we’ve seen released recently. We managed to get a great price on this cask from the little distillery deep in the Cairngorm mountains. After ten years in a hogshead this whisky already has a lot going on. The wonderful fresh character of this miniscule distillery is at the forefront. Grass and fresh apples, with whiffs of something tannic in the background, maybe it’s a bit of black tea. Texturally rather rich for the age, but it’s not a massive malt. Slightly waxiness as it finishes on the pepper and grass. Fun stuff and it should be around for a little cause this cask contained just over 300 bottles.
  • Glenrothes Select Reserve Single Malt Whisky 750ml ($39.99)
    The standard release from Glenrothes is a supple, rich, and textural marriage of various vintages from the Speyside distillery. A combination of textural sherry notes with fruit, nuttiness, and toffee on the finish. Always one of the best beginner malts for the budding Scotch fan and a time-tested favorite of many long-time drinkers.
  • Kilchoman K&L Exclusive Single Bourbon Barrel #172 Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky 750ml (Pre-Arrival) ($99.99)
    If there is one battle we’re not willing to fight in the spirits world, it’s the idea that “craft” whisky is better whisky. We don’t think using quarter casks to mature whisky faster makes for better whisky. We don’t think using organic grains or designer barrels make for better whisky either. What makes whisky better? Time. If you’re not willing to let your whisky come around naturally, then you’re not going to convince guys like David and me to support your stuff. Kilchoman, in my mind, is the one “craft” distillery that does it right. Their whisky is still young, but it’s already light years beyond what we’re seeing from standard Islay releases these days. There are reasons for this. They operate their still at a slow drip -that takes TIME. They only use standard size Bourbon and Sherry casks, which take TIME to mature. And, they hired John MacLellan, the former distiller for Bunnahabhain who has decades of experience from putting in TIME! And they keep getting better. This Bourbon cask #172 is so delicate in mouthfeel, yet bursting with white pepper, smoke, and fresh peat that it almost seems unreal. At 60% it tastes like 45% because it’s in complete harmony with a small dose of butterscotch on the finish and then a lingering floral note. At only five years of age it’s more flavorful, satisfying, and exciting than anything I’ve tasted from any Islay distillery over the past year. Wolfburn Distillery Beats First Year Production Target

Thurso, Caithness, 17th December 2013.

The new Wolfburn Distillery has completed its first year of production and has beaten its annual target, producing 190,000 litres of bulk spirit – 7,000 more than initially forecast.

Construction of the new Wolfburn Distillery was completed in early 2013 and full production began on 25th January. Since that time, 811 casks have been filled – the equivalent, if it was all to be bottled, of 375,000 bottles of whisky.

“It has been a truly fantastic first year, with production levels far ahead of expectations,” remarks Shane Fraser, Wolfburn production manager. “Right from the start the distillery equipment performed beautifully – we have had very little downtime, which has allowed us not only to maximize yields but also to implement a rolling maintenance plan to ensure the plant continues to operate as efficiently as possible.”

Shane and his team have laid down spirit in a variety of casks throughout 2013. These include small (120 litre) “quarter casks”, ex-bourbon hogsheads (250 litres), and Spanish sherry butts (500 litres). Only the finest oak casks have been used, with the sole aim of making the best possible single malt scotch whisky.

“Those people lucky enough to have tried the new spirit have given it tremendously good reviews,” says Iain Kerr, assistant manager. “We’re aiming to make Wolfburn a very smooth, aromatic and pleasing whisky to drink. So far the results have been absolutely excellent.”

As a result of the huge interest shown by journalists and public alike, Wolfburn distillery has released a small number of casks of whisky to private investors and collectors. “The interest from serious enthusiasts has been very impressive,” comments Shane Fraser. “We plan to release a few more next year, particularly to overseas collectors.”

Malted barley and casks have already been delivered to Wolfburn’s premises in Thurso in preparation for the start of 2014 production in early January.

ABOUT WOLFBURN:

The original Wolfburn Distillery was founded just to the west of Thurso by William Smith in 1821. In its day it was one of the largest distilleries in Scotland, producing, according to HMRC records, 28,056 “gallons of proof spirit” in a single year. Taking its name from the stream that provided the water – the Wolf Burn – the distillery operated until the 1860s. The reasons for its closure are lost in time, but by the 1870s the newly produced Ordnance Survey maps showed it being in ruins.

In 2011, plans were laid to resurrect the old distillery. Construction began in mid-2012 and in January 2013 the new Wolfburn Distillery commenced production. Situated 350m from the site of the original distillery, the new Wolfburn operates in much the same way as the old: craftsmen use traditional methods to produce fine spirit, which is laid down in best quality oak casks to await the day when it is bottled as whisky.

THE GLENFIDDICH 50 YEAR OLD IS TOP SELLER AT BONHAMS WHISKY SALE IN EDINBURGH  

A bottle of The Glenfiddich 50 year old was sold for £13,750 at Bonhams Whisky sale in Edinburgh last week making it the most expensive lot of the day. 

It was bottled on 26th July 1991, carried the number 416 and came in its own wooden presentation case. 

A bottle of the Macallan Select Reserve-51 year old-1948, which had been estimated at £4,000-6,000, made £7,500 and The Macallan-1938 also exceeded its estimate of £3,000-3,500 selling for £4,375. 

There was fierce bidding on a bottle of Ardberg 15 year old (est £250-300) which eventually sold for £3,500 and also on a bottle of Bowmore 1955 which went for £3,125 against its estimate of £900-1,000. 

Bonhams whisky specialist, Martin Green, commented:” Interest in whisky auctions remains high not just in the UK but across the world. This year we’ve seen a particular increase in bidders and buyers from Europe and the Far East.”

DIAGEO WELCOMES GEORGIE BELL AS NEW GLOBAL BRAND AMBASSADOR FOR MORTLACH

Diageo is pleased to announce that Georgie Bell, currently Global Ambassador for the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, will join Diageo in January 2014 as a global brand ambassador focusing on the promotion of its new range of Mortlach Single Malt Scotch Whiskies (@mortlachwhiskies #mortlach), which will be launched next year (2014).

Ewan Gunn, Global Scotch Whisky Ambassador at Diageo, said: “We are all delighted that Georgie, with her extensive knowledge of the production, marketing and communications sides of the Scotch whisky industry, has agreed to join us and support our significant new initiative for Mortlach. In her short time as roving brand ambassador at the SMWS, Georgie has made a huge impact on the whisky world, engaging influencers and consumers in many key global markets, and deploying her knowledge, energy, passion and experience of the luxury spirits sector to promote Scotch whisky. She will have a key role to play, alongside our other Global Brand Ambassadors, in the promotion of Mortlach.”

Diageo announced in November that it planned to make four new  expressions of the highly complex and richly flavoured Mortlach™ Single Malt Scotch Whisky, distilled in Dufftown since 1823, available in the global travel and luxury connoisseur markets from mid-2014. The doubling of capacity at Mortlach Distillery, involving the exact replication of the existing stillhouse, was announced in April 2013.

Georgie Bell studied at the University of Edinburgh. In 2012 the Worshipful Company of Distillers granted her their International Award for the Fundamentals in Distilling Course, and she was granted Freedom of the Company in 2013. Georgie also holds a Diploma in Distillation from the Institute of Brewing & Distilling.
