Whisky Ramblings Via Video #71

Mark Dermul, Belgian Whiskyblogger, is also a huge Star Wars fan. He recently came back from a project in Tunisia in which his team restored the Lars Homestead, the iconic movie set location from Star Wars. To celebrate, they bottled a Save Lars Whisky, a 20 Year Old Laddie. But all good things come in three. The second release of the Save Lars Whisky is a single cask of Auchentoshan 24 Year Old 1989. Knowing that Mark is in fact the Toshan Man, you can imagine this release has special significance for him.

ABERLOUR PUTS ITS CRAFTED QUALITY UNDER THE LENS WITH TED DWANE’S PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION – Scotch Whisky News

AA Aberlour A'bunadh - Shot by Ted Dwane

ABERLOUR PUTS ITS CRAFTED QUALITY UNDER THE LENS WITH

TED DWANE’S PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

Aberlour, the award-winning single malt whisky, has brought its artisanship and craft to life by linking up with up-and-coming photographer and bassist for the world-famous band, Mumford & Sons, Ted Dwane, as the exclusive partner for his inaugural solo photography exhibition, ‘A Show of Faces’, that featured in Shoreditch, London earlier this month.

Dwane, who already has a keen interest in single malt, takes a unique and intricately crafted approach to photography using hand-developed single edition prints that provide layers of contrast, and remain the unique and only result of the photo. This approach strongly mirrors Aberlour’s reputation for crafting a malt of superlative quality and careful curation of ex-sherry casks to provide the rich and intense sherry-cask influence to its range of single malts. When Dwane was planning his first show, ‘A Show of Faces’, it provided the perfect platform for the two to join together.

Dwane’s exhibition is a curation of emotive portraits of people he has met and photographed during his time on the road with his band, Mumford & Sons, alongside enigmatic and intriguing faces of visitors shot live during the exhibition, using a unique, hand-built, large-scale camera and darkroom. Dwane then interviews his subject in a specially-created lounge in the studio, over a glass of Aberlour, and collects a few sentences from their conversation in a book that correlates to the grid of faces.

The partnership celebrates an appreciation for authenticity, craft and enigmatic quality. The attention to detail required by both the photographer and the master distiller, in their mutual quest for a product of depth and intrigue, culminates in a multi-layered result, whether it be a velvety smooth single malt or a single edition hand-developed printed portrait.

The exhibition opened on 16th November with a launch party where Aberlour was served to over 100 guests from London’s creative community.

Nikki Burgess, International Brand Director for Aberlour, comments: “Aberlour has long been held in exceptional regard amongst malt whisky enthusiasts. Partnering with such a passionate photographer as Ted is a great way for us to celebrate skill, precision and dedication that we believe has always been employed at the Aberlour distillery to make the range a favourite amongst connoisseurs of the finest Scotch whisky.”

AA Sinatra

Jack Daniel’s: Sinatra Select

Jack Daniel’s Sinatra Select is bottled at 90 proof and gains its rich character from specially crafted “Sinatra Barrels” mingled with the classic Tennessee Whiskey. The Sinatra Barrels are handcrafted with the addition of deep grooves on the inside of the barrel staves. This exposes the whiskey to extra layers of oak which imparts a rich amber color, bold character and a pleasant smokiness, followed by an incredibly smooth vanilla finish. The smooth, bold character of the whiskey embodies the smooth, bold character of the man himself, Frank Sinatra.
Our Price: $220/btl (Liter bottle)

Whistlepig: The Boss Hog
(12 plus years old)

The good ‘ole boys at WhistlePig bring us “The Boss Hog,” which is a limited-edition, Single Cask, Barrel Strength Straight Rye Whiskey crafted from 100% rye grains. After the rye is distilled, WhistlePig Boss Hog is aged in a combination of new American oak and second-use bourbon casks for over twelve years. The maturation process tames the intense notes of the rye with soft hints of vanilla, caramel and butterscotch. After maturation, each bottle of WhistlePig The Boss Hog is bottled from a single barrel at barrel strength (the whisky is not diluted with water). WhistlePig The Boss Hog Straight Rye Whiskey is the product of a single barrel, and only 24, unique barrels of this whiskey have ever been bottled.

Our Price: $175/btl

Johnnie Walker: Gold Label Reserve

Previously only available in select global markets, Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve is a new step in the Johnnie Walker flavor journey. The company calls this special bottling, ‘an unexpected yet stunning profile for a Scotch whisky’. Gold Label Reserve offers a smooth balance of sweet fruits and creaminess with a light smoke. “Gold Label Reserve features some of my favorite whiskies, including casks of Clynelish single-malt Scotch whisky, whose water source flows from the Kildonan Hills – where gold was discovered in 1868,” said Master Blender Jim Beveridge. “It’s an exciting blend that offers a distinct new flavor for current Johnnie Walker fans and an appealing taste for people newer to Scotch whisky.” The flavors of Gold Label Reserve work well when the whisky is served over ice or served as a tall drink with premium soda water with twists of grapefruit or lemon.

Our Price: $90/btl

Bottle with Gold overlay available while supplies last.

AA Nikka Coffey

Nikka: Coffey Grain

The Nikka Coffey Grain is an original single grain whisky, distilled mainly from corn in a ‘Coffey’ still. Exotic, fruity and unique, it is meant for the whisky fan in search of something different. The Nikka Coffey Grain is unique in that it is based on corn, as was traditionally the case, while most modern grain whiskies rely on wheat. The corn imparts the whisky with a round and generous texture, and intense aromatics.

The Coffey still is named after its inventor Aeneas Coffey. The distillation process is continuous, whereas the pot stills which are used in single malt production require two separate distillations. Nikka runs two Coffey stills within the Miyagikyo distillery for the elaboration of its grain whiskies. Imported from Scotland in 1963, these old stills yield a very round distillate, with a distinct character that defines Nikka’s signature blends.

NOSE: Notes of tropical fruits, coconut and banana.
PALATE: A rich, soft, sweet flavor with a hint of vanilla wafer.
FINISH:A delicate finish with a touch of honeyed citrus.

Our Price: $70/btl

Thank you for looking. Due to ever-changing inventory, we cannot guarantee bottle availability. Prices are subject to change. Not responsible for typographical errors. Contact the store with any questions. Cheers.

FLAVOURS, AROMAS & GIFTS GALORE

Where to start? With single casks, you can’t always predict the character of the bottling by its age, region or even cask type. So let flavour be your guide. Have a look at our flavour profiles and follow your nose. If you’re buying for someone else and you don’t know their preferred palate, browse our list and perhaps a name will jump out at you – it’s a perfectly reasonable way to choose.
