Craigellachie 1991 21 Year Old (Chieftain’s) Cask Strength Single Malt 116.6 Proof – $196.99

Craigellachie was built in 1891 by Peter Mackie, the man behind the blended Scotch whisky, White Horse. The distillery changed hands a few times until it became a part of the John Dewar & Sons family now owned by Bacardi. This 21yo (Hogshead) has a sweet, pretty nose of walnuts, barley and citrus with a palate that matches those scents with taste. Very soft and round, this is an exotic Scotch bursting with tangerines and nuts.

Glen Keith 1995 17 Year Old (Chieftain’s) Single Malt 92 Proof – $109.99

Seagram’s built Glen Keith on the site of an old grain mill in 1957 to make a triple distilled whisky that would eventually go into Chivas Regal. They are best known for their mixture of grassy Speyside aromas and somewhat toffee sweetness. The distillery was mothballed in 2000 and just re-opened this year. The 17 year old Glen Keith aged in a single hogshead has a matured sweetness that borders on spice and herbs with flavors of ginger snaps, mint and flowers.

Caol Ila 1997 14 Year Old (Chieftain’s) St. Etienne Rum Finish 92 Proof – $99.99

Protected within the sound of Islay, close to Port Askaig, the principal port of the island, Caol Ila is the largest and most modern distillery on Islay producing arguably the most elegant, refined and well balanced single malt on the island. Bananas, calamine, sea breeze, TCP on the nose lead to seabomb of salt, lemon soft peat and light spice on the palate. Medium sweet finish with lingering iodine and lemon peel.

Ben Nevis 1999 13 Year Old (Chieftain’s) Single Malt 92 Proof – $88.99

Ben Nevis is the most northerly distillery on the west coast of Scotland and was founded in 1825. It’s had several closures during the 1970’s and 80’s, but is now owned by the Japanese company, Nikka. Since the mid-1990’s the core single malt has been the 10 year old, making this 13 year old Hogshead bottling very unique. A full-bodied, viscous Scotch, it’s loaded with ripe apples and oranges covered in baking spices dipped in chocolate.
