Laphroaig Live 2012 – Scotch Whisky News

A message from John Cambell at Laphroaig Distillery;

Thank you for all of your interest in this year’s Laphroaig Live. I’ve received several emails asking when and where it will be held and I am excited to tell you that this year’s show will be broadcast live from Germany, during Oktoberfest – the World’s largest fair! This celebration of Bavarian beer dates back to 1810, making it just 5 years older than Laphroaig itself.

Despite the very different end results, those familiar with the whisky making process will know that prior to distillation, whisky is essentially beer. We’ll be exploring the similarities between them, and sampling some local beer that has been matured in a Laphroaig barrel. We have also collected wood chips from one of our barrels that will be used to smoke some German sausages for the event, the perfect accompaniment to Laphroaig beer.

You can join us live online on Thursday 27th September 2012 at www.laphroaig.com/live. The show will start at 9pm in Germany, you can check what time that is in your own country here, we look forward to seeing you and answering any questions you might have.

Of course beer and sausages are a fine combination, but I’m sure that what most of you are really interested in is the whisky! Known as the most richly flavoured of all scotch whiskies, Laphroaig’s smoky profile comes from the peat that we use to smoke our malt. We’ll be examining the influence that this special smoky peat has on some of your favourite expressions, the Laphroaig 10 year old, the beloved Laphroaig Quarter Cask and this year’s Cáirdeas.

In comparison with our Laphroaig Islay peated malts, we’ll also be tasting a Highland peated malt from our sister distillery, Ardmore, and an Irish peated malt, Connemara, from our sister distillery in Ireland. These three peated malts all have their own very different but distinct qualities and we’ll be exploring those with our whisky experts during the show.

As always, we will be joined by Laphroaig Distillery Manager, John Campbell. He will be accompanied by master blender Robert Hicks, the revered Bernhard Schäfer, whisky writer and Master of the Quaich and Pierre Thiebaut, founder of whisky fan site Connosr.com.

I’ll send another email nearer the time, but for now please put September 27th in your diaries and bookmark www.laphroaig.com/live.

Slàinte,

Kensington Calgary Malt Messenger Bulletin – Fall Tasting Schedule Now Open for Registration! – Whisky News

Malt Messenger Bulletin – Fall Tasting Schedule Now Open for Registration!

Malt Messenger Bulletin

Dear Malt Messenger Subscribers,

I hope you’ve had a wonderful summer and an excellent Labour Day long weekend. Kensington Wine Market’s fall tasting schedule is now online and open for registration, in store, by phone (403-968-1056) and online https://www.kensingtonwinemarket.com/tastings/register.php . A lot of time, thought and planning goes into putting this schedule together, and every year I feel we’ve outdone the last. This year’s schedule is no exception, and by far the most interesting we’ve ever put on.

We have a number of special guests who will be stopping by the Kensington Wine Market to conduct tastings for us. First up is Willie Tait, the travelling brand ambassador from Jura distillery is a great story teller and has a wonderful way with words. Next up we’ll be giving the floor to Davin de Kergommeaux, Canadian whisky expert, magazine contributor and author to take us through a lineup of Canadian whiskies he feels are second to none. Later in October Alistair Walker will be in town to help us launch 3 casks of whisky, two for the KWM and another for the Companions of the Quaich. The next night Michael Urquhart from Gordon & MacPhail will be in store to launch the Gordon & MacPhail Glen Grant 60 Year Diamond Jubilee bottling. This special tasting will feature a 60 year old whisky as the star of an otherwise impressive lineup with proceeds going to charity. And last but certainly not least George Grant will be back in late November to launch the new Glenfarclas 105 Cask Strength 20 Year at a special family casks tasting which will also include vintages going back to 1962!

There are plenty of Society events too, including the usual First Friday tastings, but also an Anniversary celebration which is already half sold out-members get a forewarning about Society events www.smws.ca -and a Society launch in Edmonton. This is to say nothing of our Fall Single Malt Festival, Closed Distilleries Dinner, Rum and even an Armagnac v Cognac tasting. There is something for everyone this year, and a little more besides. All of these events will fill on a first come first serve basis, so don’t hesitate, and hopefully we’ll see you at one or more of our tastings this fall!

Slainté!

Forty Creek (40%, OB, ‘Small Batch Reserve’, Lot 105, 2008) – Canadian Whisky Tasting Note

Forty Creek (40%, OB, ‘Small Batch Reserve’, Lot 105, 2008)

On the nose is slightly closed, actually quite closed, however there are some hints of rye, some tobacco (unlit) and juniper (lots from the cask). The taste is ever so gentle and then the rye notes rise up (gently, gently) and become very honeyed and very, very enjoyable. Quite sensational actually; a gentle riot of rye notes and honey. The finish is a good reflection of the taste with some hints of oiliness and lots of grain notes. Very chewy and smackingly good.

Yup, another winner from John Hall.

New Arrivals at K&L California – Scotch Whisky News

1999 Ardbeg Galileo Single Malt Whisky 750ml ($94.99)
A new 12 year old single malt from Ardbeg bottled at 49% ABV and comprised of whisky aged in marsala casks and first-fill Bourbon barrels. Soft red fruits from the wine marry with creamy vanilla from the Bourbon, both intertwining with the big peat smoke of Ardbeg to create a rich and exotic experience.

1981 Glenmorangie Pride 28 Year Old Single Malt 1L ($3,499.99)
Malt Advocate: “Glenmorangie Pride employs the use of Sauternes barriques to give a 10 year period of secondary maturation to a batch of spirit distilled in 1981. The result is a whisky with an intense, pungent, earthy nose; very complex, with polished old furniture notes, spices, oak tannins, and licorice. The palate is ‘full on’ for a Glenmorangie; waxy, with sherbet, honey, and baked apple, then orange marmalade, sultana, and a hint of smoke in the lengthy finish.” K&L Notes: Limited release of 1000 bottles, we’ll be getting no more than 5. Talk about cask finishing, this bad boy, which was distilled in ’81, spent 10 years in Chateau d’Yquem barrique before being bottled in this futuristic and alluring bottle. Catering to the ultra-premium consumer is not easy and M&H have done strikingly well to create a bottling that feels authentically unobtainable!

Fettercairn is one of the oldest licensed distilleries in Scotland. The name Fettercairn means ‘foot of the mountain’ and on visiting this peaceful place you can understand the foresight of the person that named the town. Shrouded by verdant glens, the village of Fettercairn lies in one of Scotland’s most fertile regions. This is perfect whisky country. Natural ingredients abound: from ice-clear water springs from the Grampian mountains to barley grown in the fertile soil. Since 1823, when Sir Alexander Ramsay converted the corn mill on his land the Fasque estate to Fettercairn Distillery, these ingredients have been married together to produce a truly distinctive single malt whisky. In 1861 Queen Victoria and Prince Alfred stopped at Fettercairn en route to their Scottish palace at Balmoral. It is said they wandered the streets unrecognised enjoying the picturesque village known as the Jewel of the Mearns. A commemorative arch was later constructed to mark the occasion and it is this arch you see on our bottle.

FETTERCAIRN FIOR

Released in 2010 the Fettercairn Fior is single malt Scottish whisky with no age statement. Fettercairn Fior has been receiving good reviews since its launch and the scotch benefits from new packaging and a competitive pricing too. This Scottish whiskey might signal a new beginning for the Fettercairn range.

Tasting Notes:
Nose: Crushed pear, toffee apple and hints of cinnamon and vanilla. Peat smoke with hazelnuts, orange rind, ginger and coriander.
Palate: Dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans, peat smoke, nutmeg, mint, citrus fruits and truffle.
Finish: Sherry trifle, marzipan and pineapple
