THE FAMOUS GROUSE SETS NEW WORLD RECORD – Scotch Whisky News

THE FAMOUS GROUSE SETS NEW WORLD RECORD

As countless world records have been broken in London this month a new one has been awarded north of the border as The Famous Grouse unveiled a 228 litre bottle of its blended whisky – the largest bottle of whisky in the world. Scotland’s favourite whisky was awarded the Guinness World Record by an official adjudicator in front of fans at the brand’s birthday celebrations yesterday (Sunday 12th August) – having exceeded its target of 200 litres comfortably. The bottle stands at an impressive five feet five inches tall and holds the equivalent of 9,120 drams of whisky. It took three hours to fill the enormous bottle with help from a number of VIP guests, Paul McLean of MCLEANSCOTLAND & ANGELS WHISKY CLUB, included. The bottle will now sit proudly on permanent display at The Famous Grouse Experience for visitors taking a tour at the distillery to see. The bottle has travelled over 1,200 miles from Svetla, a town near Prague, where it was handmade by Czech glass manufacturers BOMMA. The Czech company were commissioned by The Famous Grouse as the only people skilled enough to make a hand-blown bottle of this size.

Glen Gribbon, Director of The Famous Grouse, commented: “We have been gearing towards this momentous day for a long time and it’s been extremely nerve-wracking for all involved. We are so thrilled to bring this record to the home of Scotch whisky and are relieved that it’s now official – we have the biggest bottle of whisky in the world! “The bottle will now be displayed at The Famous Grouse Experience so fans can visit and see the bottle for themselves.”

The record was awarded by an official Guinness World Record adjudicator as the brand marked its 107th birthday and The Famous Grouse Experience celebrated 10 years since opening at Glenturret Distillery, Scotland’s oldest and most visited distillery.

As well as witnessing a new world record, guests enjoyed live entertainment, a new whisky tour around the distillery and highland games demonstrations from strongman Gregor Edmunds. Gregor was crowned Scotland’s Strongest Man in 2002 and has won a host of Strongman competitions including the Highlander Challenge World Championships last year.

The Famous Grouse takes the world record from Jack Daniel’s who entered into the Guinness World Record Book last year by producing a 184 litre bottle.

Please enjoy our whisky responsibly.

Longmorn 8yo 2003 (61.6%, SMWS, 1st fill barrel, 7.69) Scotch Whisky Tasting Note

Longmorn 8yo 2003 (61.6%, SMWS, 1st fill barrel, 7.69)

On the nose there are tree fruits, golden syrup and some very nice oak spice. Some further investigation reveals some good malt (as one would expect from Longmorn and of course some good notes from the ex-American cask (vanilla etc). With water there’s some good fragrance in with the malt and some creaminess. The undiluted taste is very active and strong but brings out a little green notes, more fruit, dried and uncured tobacco, malt and more of the syrup but now everything is concentrated. Very nice! With water it’s slightly more appealing (although the undiluted sample is very engaging too) with more of the tree fruits and tobacco and some really nice sweetness and (bonus) some really good dark chocolate moments. The finish is strong and has hints of heather and rose water but still the tobacco and malt moments are still there tying it all together. It’s a very big finish that is quite active and has some staying power. Malt, malt too.

A little goes a long way; very good from start to finish. Only 150 bottles imported into the USA (The total outturn is not specified).

The Cocktail Party with James Carville & Mary Matalin – American Whiskey News Sunday

As the Democratic (September 4th – September 6th) and Republican (August 27th – August 30th) National Conventions approach, it’s easy to believe politics are a taboo topic in polite company. At a cocktail party, one wrong comment by a Democrat to a Republican—or vice versa—could have hors d’ oeuvres and cocktails flying across the room!

But dynamic duo James Carville, a liberal Democrat, and Mary Matalin, a conservative Republican, debunk this belief as the faces of Maker’s Mark Bourbon’s newest platform, which is designed to poke fun at partisan rhetoric – all in good taste, of course. After all, their relationship is proof that people who disagree can get along!

The Cocktail Party, the tongue-in-cheek campaign rolling out just in time for election season, is designed to encourage Americans to put their political differences aside and rally for a round of bourbon; it’s amazing how good food and delicious cocktails can bring people together!

To lighten the mood over the coming months, you will love seeing your favorite pundits interject in a new light; take a peak Super-PAC-free videos featuring both Carville and Matalin here (Cocktail Party videos) for a preview.

Please find Maker’s Mark’s YouTube channel link below and the video “What’s Your Favorite” that was released August 2nd for your review.

Maker’s Mark Bourbon “Labor Day (FAST) Approaching – American Whiskey News Sunday

With Labor Day approaching, summer Fridays, long days and hot weather are nearly over, but why not go out with a bang? The below bourbon-based recipes all start with Maker’s Mark Bourbon, the Kentucky staple that has forever changed the inspiration of chefs and bartenders with its smooth and full character. The bourbon trend shows no sign of slowing down, so why not celebrate the American work force with an American classic?

Maker’s Mark® Bourbon Ice Cream topped with Poached Peaches and Hazelnut Crunch
Chef Johnny Iuzzini
Maker’s Mark® Ice Cream
Makes 1 1/2 pints

2 cups whole milk
1 vanilla bean split lengthwise and scraped
4 large yolks
½ cup sugar
1 pinch salt
¼ cup Maker’s Mark®

1. Combine the milk, salt, scraped vanilla bean and seeds in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil.  Remove from the heat, cover with plastic wrap, and infuse 10 minutes.

3. Strain the milk into a medium saucepan and bring back to a simmer.  Gradually pour half of the hot liquid over the yolks, whisking to combine.  Return the entire mixture to the pan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly with a rubber spatula.  When the mixture thickens slightly, lightly coat the back of the spatula, and when the slight foam on top is the same color as the liquid underneath strain into the prepared small bowl.  Cool completely and then stir in the bourbon.  Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.  (The ice cream may be prepared up to this point a day in advance and stored in the refrigerator overnight.)
4. Freeze in an ice cream machine according to the manufacturer’s instructions and reserve, covered in plastic wrap, in the freezer for 1-2 hours before serving.

Poached Peaches

Maker’s Mark® Bourbon BBQ Ribs
Chef Joey Campanaro, Owner, Little Owl

Prep Time: 24 hours/day beforehand. Cook Time: 5 hours. Level: Easy.
Serves 4-6

2 cups Makers Mark ®
1 bunch cilantro – cleaned and roughly chopped
4 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
¼ cup fresh ginger, peeled and chopped
1 tablespoon coriander seeds
1 tablespoon mustard seeds
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon cayenne
1 teaspoon curry powder
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
¼ cup dark brown sugar
2 tablespoons kosher salt
1 rack of peeled pork spare ribs
3 tablespoons butter
½ white onion, peeled and diced ½”
1 cup pineapple juice
1 cup tomato juice
1 cup ketchup
1 cup water
Fresh cilantro leaves, for garnish
Fresh red radish, for garnish

1. In a large bowl, mix the Maker’s Mark®, cilantro, garlic, ginger, garlic, cumin, cayenne, curry, mustard seeds, Dijon and brown sugar and salt until well combined. Pour into a shallow baking dish. Submerge the full rack of ribs in the marinade and refrigerate over night.
2. Preheat the oven to 400°F. After 24 hours, remove the ribs, brushing off any excess marinade and spices (reserve the marinade for the barbecue sauce), and place on baking sheet and roast in the oven for 45 minutes. Remove the rack from the oven, wrap the ribs tightly in foil and cool in the refrigerator for at least 3 hours.
3. Heat the butter in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the diced onion and cook for 10 minutes, stirring often. Add the marinade liquid and all of its components, the pineapple and tomato juice, ketchup, and water. Cook this mixture for 45 minutes on a medium simmer, stirring occasionally.
4. When the ribs have cooled down, slice them in between each bone to separate them from the rack and place in a large mixing bowl. Strain the barbecue sauce through a fine mesh sieve and pour over the ribs, tossing to thoroughly coat them.
5. Place the individual ribs in a single layer in an ample-sized baking dish, pouring the excess barbecue sauce over the ribs, and return to the oven. Lower the heat on the oven to 350°F and bake for an additional hour, turning the ribs occasionally to insure sauce coverage.
6. The ribs will be tender and the sauce should glaze the ribs during the baking process. Serve hot with picked cilantro leaves, thinly sliced radishes, and Maker’s Mark® “chilled neat”.
