This time it’s subtlety and smoke… But still peaty.
“Comus” is 2012’s release of Bruichladdich’s giga-peaty brand, limited to 18,000 bottles yet probably likely to be gone quickly. Compared with previous Octomores this one is more delightful yet satisfyingly peaty still. Finished in a Chateau Y’Quem cask, Comus was the son of Bacchus (by-the-way).
The colour of golden white wine with a smoky and hot aroma, suggesting hot brakes. Earthy and not too peaty at first, fish-boxes, cooked fruit (raspberry jam) and banana rum come out once you are numb to the peat that also strengthens with time. On returning to the aroma I later got punnets of exotic fruits, well exotic to Scotland anyway.
Tasted, there is a big swoosh of peat on the tongue, it’s subtle yet powerful and initially it’s all there is; time reveals salt activity, coal-tar, scorched sand paper and surgical spirits. It buzzes peat-smoke and has a persistent peaty finish.
With water the aroma gains oily rags and the fruitiness gives the peat a good bashing, while I don’t get much wine influence as grapes there is definitely a lot of desert wine to it as tropical fruits.
Here is a more subdued Octomore and at this stage in the release schedule, better for that. If you like peaty whisky then this will be an absolute delight for you, different but delivering.
Square G9 smoky and just a bit rich.
