Whisky Design Awards “To vote, or not to vote, that is the question” – Whisky News

To vote, or not to vote, that is the question.

A couple of times I got to hear something like: “I don’t want to spend money on bottles, for me it is only about the whisky”. Or, “will an initiative like WW Whisky Design Awards not result in even more … Continue reading →

FWL Whisky Selection: Dewar’s Signature Blended Whisky – Scotch Whisky News

Hello Fellow WhiskeyLovers –

Greetings from the Green Mountains of Vermont, where I am on holiday with my family, sliding down the mountains over what little snow they have managed to manufacture, and trying to keep myself from breaking anything as I chase my kids down the slopes.

This weeks email is about a second and final chance on exceptional blended whisky, Dewar’s Signature Blended Scotch Whisky.

Dewar’s Signature is the result of over 160 years of blending experience. The whisky’s secret lies in combining an Aberfeldy Single Malt of great age, with other distinct and mature whiskies, each carefully selected for its exceptional character and balance. The final marrying process brings the whiskies together to create a mellow, silky blend with notes of rich fruit and dark honey.

The whisky is a limited edition blend, with each individually numbered bottle marked with the signature of founder John Dewar. World renown whisky critic Jim Murray called Dewars Signature “an outstanding addition to the highest echelons of blended Scotch whisky”.

We usually sell a bottle of Dewars Signature for around $230, but thanks to some great “negotiating” by our man Nicky The Neck, the price for a bottle of Dewars Signature is just $189.95.

That’s a savings of over $40 on a bottle!

I hope you will take advantage of this exceptional opportunity, and do it it fast….because as always, once our limited supply is gone, its gone.

Until next Week….

Doug Stone

TASTING NOTES – Courtesy of our friend Dr. Whisky

Fresh and fruity off the start, soft and sweet with lots of honey and berries. Chocolate and cream.

Some aged grain whisky, corn and some sweet smoke. Earl Grey tea. Satsuma tangerine Body Shop soap.

Like with the Dewars 18, one can sense the growth of the malt flavours in the glass.

Gentle, but active. Christmas-y spices and apricots. A bit of baby powder. French toast/eggy bread. Burst of dry sherry that comes and then goes, firesmoke, and then some pine or sappy oak. Flavours linger through the finish, but in a subdued manner, with the more aged malts making their presence known.

Tom Swift, Global Marketing Manager, Dewar’s, said: “‘We are very proud to have formed this partnership. DEWAR’S shares TED’s commitment to the spread of great ideas and their positive outcome. It fits perfectly with DEWAR’S own view of life that some things are just Worth Doing.”

About DEWAR’S Blended Scotch Whisky

Founded in 1846 by John Dewar, DEWAR’S has grown from a small wine and spirits merchant shop in Scotland, to one of the largest Scotch whisky brands in the world. Best known for its iconic DEWAR’S White Label, the top selling Blended Scotch Whisky in the USA, it has expanded its family to create a portfolio of premium and super premium whiskies including DEWAR’S 12 Years Old, DEWAR’S 18 Years Old & the exclusive DEWAR’S Signature. These whiskies are crafted using the DEWAR’S double-ageing process. Pioneered by DEWAR’S in 1899, it involves returning the hand-crafted blend to vintage oak casks for further maturation. The result is a smoother taste with a long, lingering finish; an extra step that is simply worth doing. A taste that wins medals and applause, making DEWAR’S one of Scotland’s most awarded whiskies.

Introducing… the A to Z of the World’s Best Bars “D” (Picked by The Master Blender) – Scotch Whisky News

A-Z of World’s Best Bars

So, are there many decent bars in the world serving whisky that start with D? We’ve already found a few good pubs with A, B and C so there probably are – but is your favourite amongst them?

D

Dalmore Inn, Rosemount, Scotland

We needed to give this Inn a mention as after all it shares the same name as the very special Dalmore Whisky!  The owners and staff always give you a warm welcome and it serves up a tantalising menu featuring local produce and delicacies.  It’s also hardly surprising to learn it stocks a large range of Dalmore, including the limited edition Rivers Collection

Dickens Malt Bar, Perth, Scotland

This is a traditional city pub which proudly displays whisky memorabilia all over its decor.  Added to this it has over 120 malt whiskies available to try, making it a must visit for any whisky fan.

Denver Chop House and Pub, Denver

Located downtown adjacent to the Coors Baseball field, this pub is famous for classic American loggers and a wide array of single malt scotches.  Next time you are finished watching the game, drop in and enjoy a Dalmore expression matched with one of their delicious steaks.

Del Monico’s Steak House,  Venetian Resort, Las Vegas:

What can we say?  We like to enjoy our Dalmore with a good bit of steak and much like the Denver Chop House,  Del Monico’s does not disappoint.   If you’re in Vegas, then we insist that you take a break from the ‘slots’ and dine at Emeril Lagasse’s steak house to sample his amazing New Orleans’s style cuisine.

The Davenport, Houston, Texas

Low-key, hip and casual are the testaments to The Davenport lounge in Houston.   With bottles behind the Davenport bar extending almost to the ceiling, this bar knows how to treat imbibers. Their single malt scotch collection is unrivalled in Houston.

Other D’s worth a look

Dirty Martini, California

Located in the historic Cannery Building it is one of North Beach’s live music hotspots.  A great place to chill out after work, preferably with a glass of Dalmore in hand.

Del Frisco’s of Denver, Denver

Located in the Denver Tech center, this restaurant and bar chain started in Dallas Texas 20 years ago.

Dublin’s Square, San Diago

You would expect an Irish pub to have a good showing of Ireland’s best whiskies, however Dublin’s Square goes one better and has a vast range of Scotches on offer too.

Dubliner, Dallas, Texas, USA

As one of the best Irish pubs in Dallas, the Dubliner offers 32 Scotch and Irish whiskeys, ale and cider on tap and numerous beers by the bottle from around the world. They also offer authentic Irish pub fare like the Welsh rarebit and typical American pub grub like the club sandwich.

Downing Street, Houston, Texas

Sip and savour a whisky from their well-stocked bar and if the mood takes you match it to one of the cigars available in their walk in humidor.

Dundee Dell, Oklahoma

Houses one of the most comprehensive list of single scotches anywhere in the United States.  You can enjoy up to 12 different expression of Dalmore scotch while you sit in amazement.

Dirty Dicks, Edinburgh

A traditional looking pub at the West end of Rose Street, Edinburgh with over 200 malts to choose from.

Diggers’ (Athletic Arms), Edinburgh

Technically this bar should come under ‘A’ but this pub is known to most locals by its nickname ‘Diggers’.  Named because it sits between two graveyards, this bar has a friendly atmosphere and a vast selection of whiskies.

What other good pubs are there with D?

No doubt there’s a few bars we’ve missed out, so feel free to tell us below or on our Facebook page about any other great bars or pubs that start with a D – and remember to tell us what it is that makes them so special…

Ed Clark, Virginia Wildlife Activist, Wins Rare Life Award – American Whiskey News

Ed Clark, Virginia Wildlife Activist, Wins Rare Life Award

Eagle Rare Bourbon donates $32,000 to seven charities around the country

RICHMOND, VA (February, 2012) — Eagle Rare Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey has named Edward E. Clark, Jr. of Waynesboro, Virginia, as the grand prize winner of the 2012 Rare Life Award. Eagle Rare will donate $20,000 to the Wildlife Center of Virginia, where Clark is president and co-founder, in his honor.

The Wildlife Center of Virginia, founded in an empty barn in 1982, was originally established to care for local wildlife. In just 30 years, the Center has grown into one of the world’s leading teaching and research hospitals for wildlife and conservation medicine. Over the years, the Center has cared for more than 60,000 injured or orphaned animals, reached millions of people with its educational programs, and trained students and professionals from veterinary schools in the United States, Canada, and more than 40 other countries.

During the Gulf oil spill, Clark was part of an interdisciplinary damage assessment team assembled by the Humane Society of the United States that was asked to view the area affected by the spill and make recommendations.

Additionally, Clark and his team have spent more than seven years developing and deploying a sophisticated online database, called WILD-ONe, which links care centers across North America and helps them collect, compile, and analyze patient records to detect and report health issues as they emerge.

Throughout his life, Clark has inspired and enabled millions of people to become involved in protecting wildlife around the world. It is because of his courage, leadership, survival, devotion, character and heroism that Ed Clark is the grand prize winner of the 2012 Rare Life Award.

Eagle Rare will also donate $2,000 to the charities of choice of the six runners up, making the company’s total contribution to this contest $32,000.

The six 2012 runners up are:

• Dick Hoyt, Character Award: Holland, MA (The Hoyt Foundation)

• Dr. Peter Sharpe, Devotion Award: Avalon CA (Institute for Wildlife Studies)

• Sarah Yourman, Leadership Award: Fairlawn, NJ (Boomer Esiason Foundation)

• Rachel Reynolds, Courage Award: Ashland, VA (CJ’s Thumbs Up Foundation)

• Eric Johnson, Heroism Award: Louisville, KY (Supporting Heroes)

• John Ulsh, Survival Award: Carlisle, PA (Carlisle Area YMCA)

The Rare Life Award is an annual recognition program created to honor individuals who exhibit courage, leadership, survival, devotion, character and heroism.
