BUSINESS WORLD ENJOYS A TASTE OF THE MACALLAN – Scotch Whisky News

the-macallan

BUSINESS WORLD ENJOYS A TASTE OF THE MACALLAN

The Macallan single malt whisky, distributed by Maxxium UK, is investing in a business sampling programme at some of the UK’s most prestigious events on the business calendar, engaging with over 2,850 people.

The aim of the programme is to engage and educate consumers.  The brand will sample The Macallan Fine Oak at a host of events including the prestigious National Business Awards, attracting some of UK’s leading entrepreneurs and business heavyweights.

Kicking off at the Restaurant and Bar Design Awards next month, The Macallan will showcase its pioneering Ice Ball Serve at this contemporary event.  Guests will be able to enjoy the theatre of this innovative serve, with a perfectly formed sphere of ice in each glass.

Other national events will include the Law Awards of Scotland in Glasgow on 8 September, and the National Chamber of Commerce Awards in London on 24 November, which is considered to be one of the UK’s most prestigious business awards on the calendar.

In addition to business events, The Macallan Lounge will also tour some of the UK’s top lifestyle events, heading to London in November for the Top Gear Live Show.  The theme will be motor racing masters with one of Nigel Mansell’s Formula 1 racing cars showcased in The Lounge.

The Macallan Lounge will also be visiting The Holiday and Travel Show, January 2012, as well as appearing in The Photographic Masterclass area of The Gadget Show Live, April 2012, showcasing the latest innovations in the world of photography.   The Macallan Masters of Photography will be showcased at both of these events.

The Macallan Lounge, a travelling ‘lounge bar’, offers an elevated sampling experience where consumers are invited to meet with friends, relax and enjoy a complimentary dram of The Macallan Fine Oak 10 year old. The Macallan Lounge aims to achieve over 28,000 brand interactions and gain exposure to 230,000 consumers during the programme.

Peter Sandstrom, Marketing Director at Maxxium UK ltd, commented: “We have a tailored marketing strategy for The Macallan and sampling is a key part of the brand’s investment plan.  These events offer strong platforms to further build our brand, reaching both existing Macallan fans and introducing the brand to new consumers.  We are confident that the awareness of The Macallan is high and the best way to introduce whisky is getting it into people’s hands and allowing them to try it out for themselves. The Macallan tends to have a high trial to conversion rate so when people taste it they tend to like it.”

The timeless reputation of The Macallan is founded upon Six Pillars:

The Spiritual Home

Easter Elchies House proudly watches over The Macallan distillery in Speyside, Scotland. Built in 1700, this Jacobean manor house is The Macallan’s spiritual home.

Curiously Small Stills

The Macallan’s curiously small and uniquely shaped copper stills help to concentrate the flavour of the ‘new make’ spirit.

The Finest Cut

The ‘cut’ is the amount of distilled spirit collected from the stills as ‘new make’ spirit. The Macallan takes one of the finest ‘cuts’ of any distillery in Scotland; typically just 16% goes forward to fill or our casks.

Exceptional Oak Casks

The Macallan’s unfaltering obsession with selecting exceptional oak casks brings an unsurpassed, timeless quality to The Macallan.

Natural Colour

The Macallan insists upon Natural Colour. It is the interaction of spirit and wood alone which delivers the rich variety of colour, aroma and taste evident throughout the range.

Peerless Spirit

The Macallan remains the single malt against which all others must be judged. It is celebrated far and wide by experts and discerning drinkers as the world’s most precious whisky.

Tennants June 18th, 2011 Whisky Auction Results – Scotch Whisky News

tennants-logo-350-master1

Tennants inaugural Rare Whisky and Wine sale on 18th June featured hundreds of bottles of malt whisky, vintage port and fine wine.  All but two of the lots found new owners and the sale totalled almost £20,000, a sure sign that the commodities market is resilient to the toughest financial conditions.

Iconic bottles of whisky from closed distilleries continued to generate huge interest.  Top results included a 1970’s bottle of Bowmore selling for £660 and a 22 year old Springbank selling for £450.  The old stock from a retired off-licence owner, who closed shop in the 1980’s, also proved popular, with a bottle of Macallan 25 year old, distilled in 1957, making £720!  Vintage wine and port continued to be popular, and amongst the top sellers was a case of 1985 Taylors vintage port at £440.

Tennants are now planning a specialist wine sale in September, with magnums of 1970 Chateau Lafite, Latour and Mouton Rothschild already consigned alongside cases of 1985 Chateau Calon Segur and a bottle of Chateau Lafite from 1945!  The wine market is increasingly buoyant and the keen interest shown from Chinese bidders helps to make the current climate one of the best times to sell vintage wine and port.

The next Whisky sale is scheduled for November, and entries are coming in fast.  If you would like to consign any items for either sale, or would like further information or a valuation of your own cellar please contact Mark Littler on 01969 623780 or email mark.littler@tennants-ltd.co.uk. We have very competitive sellers rates, 15%+vat of the hammer price, and reach the world with our sales.  As proven with the last sale, the commoditites market is very strong, and resilient to the toughest financial conditions, so there really has never been a better time to sell!

Behind the scenes narrative;

Before the sale had even begun every lot was well covered with commission bids, and a packed room coupled with very active phone bidders mean that the sale was a success, totalling almost £20,000.  There was a phenomenal amount of interest pre sale, the majority from North of the border, although there was a large number of trade buyers, including several notable whisky bars!

Recent Bottles
The sale included several good recent bottlings.  Amongst the top sellers included a 1976 Laphroaig, £380, a 1975 Ardbeg, £250, and a 1957 Glen Grant, £150.  There was lots of private interest in these bottles, and needless to say many will now have been opened and sampled!  Other good performers included a litre of Loch Dhu, £120, and the four Flora and Forna series bottles also achieved a bullish £300, the latter being bid strongly by two parties in the room.  The sale highlight however came from a 25 year old Macallan, distilled in 1957, which sold for £720.

Vintage Bottles
Undoubtedly the main attraction at the sale was the vintage bottles.  The majority came from two collectors; one started buying when his grandchild was born as a 21st present (the grandchild did not end up liking whisky so after several years of debate, the decision was made to sell), and a retired off-liscence owner who retired in the early 1980’s.

Two of the best sellers of the sale fall into the vintage category, a ships label bottle of Bowmore, £660, and a 1970’s 22 year old bottle of Springbank, £450.  Sticking with the Springbank a recent bottle of cask strength made £130.  Other 1970’s bottles that did well was a 10 year old Laphroaig, £410, and a Rosebank, £300.

There were two bottles of Balvenie over 8 year old, a 70cl and a Litre.  Surprising the 70cl sold better at £160, compared to the £130 for the litre (despite that 70cl not having a box).  There were also two bottles of Glen Flagler.  The first, an 8 year old with its original red velvet bag, made £280, the other, in original cellophane wrapper made £170.

Cask Strength
For those who like it a little stronger, there were some nice cask strength bottles on offer.  Highlights included the two Rare Malts Selections, the 35 year Millburn making £250 and the 21 year Banff selling for £190.

Specials
There were a few more unusual  lots on offer. The first, a bottle of Old Suntory, is the subject of a whole online debate (http://nonjatta.blogspot.com/2010/02/dating-suntory-old-bottles.html).  And to solve the age old question for the topic viewers, it made £160.  Another unusual lot was the complete Beneagles Thistle and Rose chess set.  This was not the normal set of miniatures that often crop up, but a full chess set, complete with board and a 70cl full bottle of Beneagles (presumably for the winner?!).

The next Whisky sale is planned for November.

Kind regards,

Mark Littler

Scotch Malt Whisky Society of America July Sale 2011 Outturn Offerings

Garden in the Glen

Cask No. 9.59
Highlands, Speyside (Rothes)

The unexpected nose said ‘surprise!’ with the rich weighty sweetness of Sauternes fruits (honey, banana, peachy and sugar), brioche and marzipan. Millionaire shortbread brought a traditional bakery alongside custard doughnuts, cookie dough and runny honey. The neat palate revealed a subtle explosion; “malty gold dust” said the Leither. Sweet and sour, the taste was feisty with rhubarb and custard, candy floss, dried raspberries and Edinburgh rock – “all the fun of the fair”. Also Manzanilla sherry and schezuan. The reduced nose became fruitier and floral with elderflower and cherry blossom. The reduced palate was warm with hot chestnuts and German pan fried roasted almonds coated with sugar. Pistachio ice cream and cherry sauce lingered. This distillery is renowned for its beautiful Victorian garden.

Drinking tip: Outdoors in a blossoming garden

Colour: Blonde-gold
Cask: Refill hogshead
Age: 13 years
Date distilled: April 1997
Alcohol: 58.2%

$110

Barley sugars rolled in ash

Cask No. 16.30
Highlands, Eastern Highlands

The nose delivered dried fruits, treacle, dandelion and burdock, belly pork roasted with brown sugar and much later salt and hot stones; one panellist got a hint of soap. The unreduced palate had sweet tobacco, slightly burnt buttered toast and dark barley sugars rolled in ash; the after-taste was fairly spicy. The reduced nose had crème caramel, Hessian and dark honey. The reduced palate was very sweet but with a darker, drier, tannic edge – lavender, fruity jam, sherry, sweet onion chutney – eventually going back to an echo of the roast pork. The old distillery cat could easily match Mighty Mouse.

Drinking tip: After dinner with coffee

Colour: Deep honey gold
Cask: Second-fill hogshead
Age: 22 years
Date distilled: November 1988
Alcohol: 51.6%

Islay twinned with Algarve

Cask No. 23.67
Islay, Loch Indaal

The nose whispered delicate perfumes (buttercups, snowdrops, spring flower meadows above sea cliffs); also coconut, cream soda and McVitie’s Gold Bars. Even in reduction we found this nose sexily seductive, with sweet tobacco, sherbet straws, vanilla and mimosa flowers nodding in the warm breeze – like a twinning of the Islay and Algarve landscapes! The unreduced palate had delicious sweet heat – Berwick Cockles and white chocolate with pink peppercorns – we also found heather flowers, bog myrtle, seaweed and white peach. With water it developed Parma ham and leather, salt, smoke, wood sap and Chablis. This distillery’s name means ‘the brae on the shore’ in Gaelic.

Drinking tip: Ideally on a hill, overlooking a beach at sunset

Colour: Platinum gold
Cask: Refill barrel
Age: 8 years
Date distilled: July 2002
Alcohol: 62.5%

$85

Honeyed fruits

Cask No. 125.44
Highlands, Northern Highlands

Orange blossom, ginger, almonds, and vanilla pods were the Panels first impressions but also notes of leather, coconuts, lily-of-the-valley, fresh herbs – thyme, rosemary and oregano, freshly baked shortbread and white balsamic vinegar. To taste the Panel found a wonderful mix of hot, syrupy lemons, oranges and peaches combined with black pepper, tobacco and nutmeg. The addition of water released the fruits – peaches, apricots, lychees, kiwis (a Del Monte fruit pot someone suggested) all covered in honey; to taste it was sweet, creamy, mouth coating with a lovely nutmeg, root ginger and cinnamon spice. This distillery’s water is drawn from the Tarlogie Springs.

Drinking tip: An anywhere anytime type of dram

Colour: Champagne gold
Cask: First-fill barrel
Age: 10 years
Date distilled: February 2000
Alcohol: 55.9%

WhiskyCast Publishes Episode #322 – Scotch Whisky News

whiskycast-ii3

Since 1869, Wild Turkey bourbon has been made on Wild Turkey Hill, just east of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. Jimmy and Eddie Russell saw a need to expand production to meet growing global demand for bourbon, but no room to grow on the Hill. Now, they’re making Wild Turkey at a new $50 million distillery just up the road, and the dedication ceremony for the new distillery was held this week. The Russells tell us how they’ve gotten the new plant to make spirit that tastes just like the old place, and we’ll hear Jimmy’s entire speech during the ceremony.

Kensington Spring Single Malt Whisky Festival REVIEW – Thursday June 9th, 2011 – Scotch Whisky News

wi-travel-icons

The Travels of Whisky Intelligence – Kensington Spring Single Malt Whisky Festival – Thursday June 9th, 2011

Kensington Wine Mart (KWM) in Calgary, Alberta hosts a Single Malt Festival twice yearly in the Spring (Spring is usually tardy in Alberta and quite frankly it can snow at any second no matter what time of the year) and Fall; due to space constraints the Festival is limited to 100 participants. The extensive wine racks  are pushed back to make space, the beer is ignored,  the tables for the various brands & distilleries are shoe horned in as best they can and an extensive array of whiskies is offered to the lucky few whom are able to attend. Whisky Intelligence was one of the lucky attendees this Spring, our attempt to attend in the Fall of 2010 ended before it began due to extremely poor flying weather and aircraft problems (better to experience aircraft problems on the ground rather than half way there). This time the flying weather was perfect and the flight time was mercifully short at just over an hour in duration.

In many ways Alberta is the Canadian version of Texas with lots of income from the oil & gas sector, lots of cowboy hats and boots, big pick up trucks; no provincial sales tax (except for the federal tax, the GST) and basically a free liquor market not burdened by a government monopoly as in other Canadian provinces. The net result is a very vibrant whisky community with very decent prices and loads of selection.

andrew

The Festival is organized by Andrew Ferguson (who was recently inducted into the Keepers of the Quaich) and he’s the resident ‘scotch guy’ at Kensington. Customers are kept in the loop by his emailed Malt Messengers newsletter which affords them the inside track on new products, tasting notes, sales, monthly dinners & tastings featuring various single malts and details of distillery trips to Scotland, also led by Andrew.

For such a physically small location crammed with 100 people the line up of whiskies was impressive indeed; Authentic Wine & Spirits with three BenRiach, two Isle of Jura, four GlenDronach (including the Glendronach 1995 KWM PX, a KWM exclusive) and a Dalmore, Purple Valley Imports with Stronachie 18, two Amrut, four different Roughstock, the English Whisky Company, Sullivan’s Cove and a very nice 26yo Glenglassaugh. Diageo Canada had Port Ellen 8th Release, Lagavulin DE, Oban, Talisker, Caol Ila, the Singleton and Bulleit Bourbon. Charton-Hobbs had EIGHT different Glenmorangie, several Ardbeg and a few Glenrothes. Not to be out done the table featuring Edradour and Signatory featured eight bottlings ranging from Edradour Caledonia to Glen Mhor 1982.

United Distributors offered seven bottlings from Bunnahabhain, Tobermory, Ledaig and Deanston while Harvest Vintage Imports offered six Isle of Arran (including two Kensington exclusive casks, one sherry and one bourbon) as well as two Finlaggan. Saverio Schiralli poured a couple of Auchentoshan, four Bowmore and two Glen Garioch.

PMA Canada was pouring three Glenfiddich and five Balvenie. Beam Global had a great selection of three Macallan and four Highland Park (including the recently arrived St. Magnus) as well as the brand new to the market Alberta Premium 30 year old. Gold Medal Marketing featured and impressive line of thirteen Duthies, three G&M Connoisseurs’ Choice, a couple of both Mackmyra and Kilchoman.

The Kensington Wine Mart Table (actually an up ended barrel) featured Tullibardine 1987,   G&M Connoisseurs’ Choice Glen Keith 1968, Kilchoman KWM Fresh Bourbon, G&M KWM Glen Grant 1966, Mackinlay’s Shackleton, Compass Box Hedonism Maxximus and a Signatory Bowmore 1970 40 Year Old. Stellar use of an up ended barrel!

The Curiosities Table was happily controlled by Dr. Jane Cameron who poured Lagavulin Feis Ile 2010, Yamazaki Sherry Cask, Yamazaki Puncheon, Port Charlotte An Tura Mor, Whistle Pig Rye Whiskey and Nikka From the Barrel. Later in the evening Whisky Intelligence earned a wry glance from Andrew Ferguson for blending the Yamazaki Puncheon and the Port Charlotte An Tura Mor together but his look changed to one of pleasant surprise at the result!

Despite the size of the location and the number of people there is no trouble in navgating between tables and everybody is very friendly. Alas, is short order the Festival was over at 9PM sharp however there’s no room for complaint since the selection of whiskies on offer is simply more than you can appreciate in a single evening. Since the selection is so extensive there is something for everybody. Most, if not all of the whiskies were on sale at between 5% and 20% off during the evening and Whisky Intelligence took the opportunity to buy a G&M single cask 1995 Old Pulteney 60.5% from a First Fill Sherry Butt Cask #1505 and a Bruichladdich Classic Sherry 46%, neither of which had been sampled by WI prior to the Festival.

Post Festival WI had the distinct pleasure to have a dram or two with Glenn Todd & Stan Willow, members of the Companions of the Quaich and directors of the Victoria Whisky Festival who were also in Calgary for the Kensington Spring Single Malt Whisky Festival.

Indian Hunter, c. 1855 Collection of Glenbow Museum

As with past festivals (as WI readers well know) the opportunity was taken to visit a local museum and in Calgary the one to visit is the Glenbow Museum which was just a two minute walk from the Fairmont Palliser in the down town area. The selection of historical oil paintings really was first rate and depicted the West extremely well. A nice way to finish the trip and they even have a few paintings by Cornelius Krieghoff, remember him from the Spirit of Toronto trip?

Glenbow Museum’s holding of nineteenth century art is strong in works on paper featuring topographical and illustrative images, which were created by itinerant artists. They were not professional artists but explorers, engineers, surveyors, and military officers documenting the opening up of the West. Another significant part of the art collection relates to the exploration of the Arctic.

Glenbow also has a large body of works by artists, most members of the newly created Royal Canadian Academy, whose trips to the West were promoted and sponsored by the Canadian Pacific Railway. Large oil paintings by these artists were typically done in Ontario, based directly on sketches, photographs, and watercolours executed on western trips. Over the years, through purchase and donation, Glenbow has acquired many important works of art by artists from eastern Canada and the United States.

The Glenbow Museum even had an exhibition of Karsh photographs which was very interesting (but of a lot of deceased people).

Traditions must be maintained so later in the day at the airport on the home ward leg of the trip in the comfort of the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge a pre flight ‘blend’ of one ounce of Glenlivet 12yo mixed with one ounce of Johnnie Walker Black was enjoyed, an opportunity was had to reflect on the Kensington Spring Single Malt Whisky Festival and what an enjoyable event it is. If you have the opportunity (or if you don’t have the opportunity make one) then you really must attend one of Kensington’s Festivals, they have a great selection of whiskeis and it’s a very good whisky shopping opportunity.

Whisky Intelligence would like to thank Andrew Ferguson and Kensington Wine Mart for the ticket to the Festival. Visit Kensington Wine Mart at www.kensingtonwinemarket.com
