Caribou Crossing Single Barrel Toasts The Holidays

Luxury Canadian Whisky Brand Is Turning Heads in the Whiskey World; Gift Box Makes It Ideal for the Gift Giving Season

New Orleans, LA (Nov., 2011) – Since launching in April 2010, Caribou Crossing, the world’s first single barrel Canadian whisky, has been turning heads. The whisky has received a 93 rating from John Hansell at The Whisky Advocate; was named “2010 Canadian Whisky of the Year” by canadianwhisky.org; won a double gold medal at the 2010 San Francisco World Spirits Competition; a gold medal and “90” rating meaning “exceptional” from Tastings.com (Beverage Testing Institute); a gold medal and “90” rating meaning “excellent, highly recommended” at the 2010 Ultimate Spirits Challenge; a silver medal and best in class at the 2010 International Wine and Spirits Competition; and a bronze medal at the 2010 Los Angeles International Wine and Spirits Competition.

Packaged in a rich, royal blue bag nestled inside an elegant gift box, Caribou Crossing makes the ideal holiday present for anyone desiring the uniqueness of a single barrel Canadian whisky coupled with a rich, smooth flavor that has whisky aficionados everywhere giving it high marks.

The barrels used for Caribou Crossing were hand-selected by Sazerac’s Master Blender Drew Mayville. He selected the most mature and flavor-rich samples available and oversaw the bottling of each individual barrel. Each bottle of Caribou Crossing has its own subtle uniqueness. Whisky buffs can expect to taste radiantly-hued nectar with a nod to the tantalizing silky texture provided by the barrel. The rye grain cuts through the wood flavors making its spicy presence known without risking the creamy vanilla custard smoothness. The finish is oak with an orangey tang.

Caribou Crossing Single Barrel Canadian Whisky is available at retail for $49.99 for a 750ml bottle.

Kensington Calgary Malt Messenger Bulletin – Fall 2011 Whisky Week – Scotch Whisky News

logo_kwm_sm

Dear Malt Messenger Subscribers,

Welcome to the Kensington Wine Market’s 2011 Fall Whisky Week(s). Things are getting busy at the market and there is a lot going on. The Scotch Malt Whisky Society Canadian branch had a tasting last Friday night to launch 7 new whiskies. A standing room only crowd of 34 individuals sampled their way through a new Laphroaig, Bladnoch, Linkwood and others, and sales were brisk. Three of the whiskies virtually sold out that night and all of them showed well. I will include the latest Canadian Outturn of SMWS whiskies below.

Tonight the Kensington Wine Market is playing host to Willie Tait, Brand Ambassador for the Isle of Jura Distillery who will lead us through a tasting of whiskies from Jura distillery including: 10 Year, 16 Year, 21 Year, Superstition, Prophecy and a special treat distilled in 1974 which is extremely rare. There are more details below on tonight’s Jura tasting and a few tickets to boot. The following night, Wednesday the 9th, Alistair Walker of BenRiach/Glendronach distilleries will be hosting a special whisky dinner for us at Buchanan’s Chop House to celebrate the release of our latest cask of whisky. While at the distillery in May of this year my tour participants and I stumbled upon a spectacular 39 year old cask of Glendronach distilled in 1972. It impressed us all so much we had bottled for the store. It is a fruit bomb and one of the Top 10 whiskies I’ve ever tasted… and this will be your first opportunity to taste it. We will also be sampling the Glendronach Grandeur and 5 other whiskies bottled by the Glendronach and BenRiach. The event will be held at Buchanan’s Chop House and will feature a sumptuous 3 course meal! There are still a few tickets left with more details following below.

Thursday night is the big show, our annual Fall Single Malt Festival. The event is open to 100 participants and features as many whiskies focusing on premium and rare bottlings. Both of our new casks for this fall will be open for sampling and available for sale: Glendronach 1972 KWM Cask 711 and Kilchoman KWM Sherry Cask; more on both of those in the next Malt Messenger. This event is getting more and more popular every year, and has been sold out for the last 6 weeks. But don’t despair; there are still tickets available for the two preceding events, as well as our Rare Malts Tasting a week today! Finally our Whisky Week(s) events conclude on Wednesday November 16th with a by invitation only Laphroaig tasting to be hosted at the store by Simon Brooking. It’s a busy couple of weeks to be sure, even more so when you consider all the new whiskies being released, but you’ll have to wait for the next full Malt Messenger for details on those!

I hope you enjoy this Malt Messenger Bulletin.

Slainté!

JURA DISTILLERY WITH WILLIE TAIT  Tonight (apologies – WI did not receive this in time to publish on the 8th) – $40

Tuesday November 8th at 7PM  KWM – $40 – The distillery is named for the isle from which it hails, just to the northwest of Islay. Only 180 residents call it home today alongside 5000 deer. The distillery produces both a heavily and lightly peated style, as well as a middle of the road expression which combines the two. This tasting will feature Jura 10, 16, 21, Superstition and Prophecy as well as a 1974 mystery bottling which will alone make the tasting worthwhile!

For more information on the Society visit www.smws.ca  Society Memberships (which include a welcome pack the first year) and Society whiskies are exclusively available in Canada through www.smws.ca and at Kensington Wine Market. Below are the 7 new whiskies the Society has launch in Canada for November:

aa4

1. 9.60: Jam Making and Harvested Fields Refill Hogshead/Ex Bourbon  57.6% – Colour: Burnished Brass with Beads 13 Years  Outturn: 328 Bottles  Panel’s Tasting Note: The nose was buttery (buttered toast, croissants, bread and butter pudding) with raisins, baked apples, custard, new-made jam and mixed spice. The unreduced palate was big and full-bodied with lasting heat – the flavours included intense fruit and vanilla, poached pears with soft cinnamon spice and syrup and slightly burnt pastries with currants. Water accentuated the jam tarts (with icing sugar) on the nose and introduced an earthy note. The reduced palate, still rich and substantial, evoked a jam maker’s kitchen, fresh sourdough bread and the comforting glow of autumn sunshine on harvested fields. From the first distillery established in Rothes. Drinking Tip: A kitchen dram – or to evoke childhood autumn days – $115.99  Only 1 Left!

2. 10.72: A Hawker Market in Singapore  Refill Sherry Butt  56.4% – Colour: Coppery Gold  12 Years Outturn 756 Bottles – Panel’s Tasting Note: The nose had buttery egg custard, vanilla, syrup, donuts, light smoke, struck matches and dried flowers, plus pork char siu, duck and hoisin sauce with rice wine. The unreduced palate had creamy vanilla, cooked meats, aromatic smoke, pepper and chilli – someone remembered prawns grilled on pans of salt; another panellist was transported to Singapore’s hawker market – a positive experience, apparently. The reduced nose managed to balance fruit (apple, cranberry, orange, melon, lychees) with smoked fish pie and brown sauce. The reduced palate – smoky, salty, woody, with brown sugar, banana, leather and tobacco. The distillery name means mouth of the river. Drinking Tip: After eating exotic food. – $111.49

3. 28.23: Attention Grabbing Spicy Refill Sherry Butt 57.5% – Colour: Yellow Gold 21 Years Outturn 607 Bottles  Panel’s Tasting Note: The nose gave us hay, grass, wood-sap, sawdust, some delicate floralnotes, peppery spice, blackcurrant, jam and lots of nuts (macadamia, almond, hazelnut). The palate had toffee, chocolate and treacle, but it was the spicy wood that grabbed our attention – chilli, Victory V’s, oak tannins – like licking an old cask, without the splinters someone said. The reduced nose had toffee and lots of scented wood – cedar, pine, grape stems, saunas. The reduced palate seemed sweeter – raisins and chocolate-coated Brazils – but still with the woodiness of long years in cask – chewing on sticks, resinous, spicy; a delicious dram from Blackford village. Drinking Tip: Share with someone who understands and appreciates good whisky – and give it time. – $150.49

4. 29.106: Old Lace and Lavender Hand Creme  Refill Hogshead  57.3% – Colour: Dirty Gold 13 Years  Outturn 188 Bottles  Panel’s Tasting Note: With coal dust, bacon flans, liquorice, tomato leaf, salty maple ham, fresh peat, charcoal bonfires and geranium leaf the Panel thought this inviting. Big and smoky to taste with white pepper, barbecued prawns, heather, chalky violets, sweet oysters and charcoal. Water brought out iodine, lavender hand cream, blackened pork, old lace, vanilla, mint sauce and salty oysters. Spicy, sweet, nutty, and salty on the palate with hot wood (saunas), heather, pine (likened to winter walks in the woods), and meaty notes, the smoke although dense was very much in the background. This distillery has a royal warrant from Prince Charles. Drinking Tip: Perfect for after a sauna, before jumping into the frozen loch in winter. – $121.99 Only a couple left!

5. 33.113: Sweet, Peaceful Dreams  First Fill Barrel 60.4% – Colour: American Dry GingerAle  8 Years Outturn 232 Bottles Panel’s Tasting Note: You’re in a fabulous pavilion – soaking in a bubble-bath – sweetly peaceful. Nearby, a platter of exotic fruits (pineapple, papaya, lychees) and a dram of this. Across the room there’s a fire of fragrant pine cones. Outside, the eighteenth green of the world-class golf course that you have just completed way under par. The door opens and another serving girl appears with poppy seed biscuits, Italian fennel-flavoured salami and a beaming smile. You are tired but still feeling strong and proud of your achievements. Everything is in balance and harmony – the dream, the feeling, and the evocative scents and flavours from this small headland dram. Drinking Tip: The perfect dram for unwinding after a hard day. – $103.49

6. 39.76: Delish Refill Hogshead/Ex-Bourbon  56.3% – Colour: Honey Gold 28 Years Outturn 260 Bottles  Panel’s Tasting Note: The unreduced nose suggested vanilla, raspberry ripple, candy floss and banana, but it mostly conveyed scents from a ladys dresser – citrus, floral perfumes (violet, lavender, lily of the valley), soft leather and sandalwood. This floral intensity continued with water and we also found caramelised onions and spices (white pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon). The unreduced palate was floral and woody (like chewing on charred heather stems, birch twigs or even hyacinth bulbs). We also detected toffee and caramelised orange. With water it became syrupy sweet, with cedarwood and cloves in the finish – Delish! The distillery was built by Peter Brown in 1825. Drinking Tip: A perfect first date dram (or just a sunny day if you can’t get a date). – $180.49  Only a few left!

7. 50.46: Eve’s Pudding in a Glass  Refill Hogshead  54.6% – Colour: Full Gold 21 Years Outturn 127 Bottles – Panel’s Tasting Note: The room was instantly filled with sweet fruity scents – bruised ap-ples, pineapple, set honey; mellow, rich and opulent: Eve’s Pudding (apple topped with soft sponge), or even tarte tatin. The taste at full strength was not so rich: sharp, after a sweet start – one panellist was reminded of strawberry flavoured cornflower. Water raised soft pastry, tinned pineapple and baked apple, with some dry straw and boiled sweets (travel sweets dusted with icing sugar), and the taste is now much improved: soft and smooth, with light sweetness, a spicy finish and an overall taste of fresh mandarins. Atypical of the make from our southern-most distillery. Drinking Tip: Chilled with Eve’s pudding. – $157.99 Only 1 left!

Angels Whisky Club “Whisky & Blues” Interview with Tim Hain – Whisky News

cdcoverbleggaeweb

TIM HAIN, master bluesman and whisky lover. The big whisky interview; Paul talking to Tim. Apart from this interview, I reall URGE you to check out his website, I love this music… http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=tim+hain&aq=f  listen/watch

How you doin Tim, lets get right into it…
When did you start a liking for the blues? When I was 16 at public school. Bluesbreakers “Beano” album, with Eric Clapton – an earthquake…then Peter Green, Freddie King, Canned Heat, Mike Bloomfield, Hendrix. Saw Cream at Woking Town Hall! (Paul; anyone else out there doin what I’m doin? in me head am agreeing all the way!!!)

And what was your first gig (however young?) At same school, by the river, at 16 singing and playing Red House, badly…

What or who, are the big influences in your music? As Mentioned, plus Albert King…followed by West Coast Rock, Byrds, Dead etc. Then big on reggae in The 80s,Marley, Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh, Black Uhuru, Sly and Robbie..and all great singer/songwrtiters – Beatles, Paul Simon, Jackson Browne, Peter Gabriel…then African township vibes – 4 Brothers, Thomas Mapfumo. Graceland was great.

At what point did you realise blues and whisky blended so well? – (see what I did there, och so clever eh!) OK don;t rub it in! I think when I met Colin Dunn. We…erm…blended well together. I match his taste in music, and true to his word ( rare these days) he got me some work at some wonderful whisky events – Whisky Lounge, The TWE Whisky Show (1 last 2 years )

There is also a wee tune or two with a Reggae beat, do you enjoy this breakaway also from blues? What d’you think Rasta? I am the masterblender! Blues and Reggae = Bleggae LOL!!

Who are or what is The Jamside Up Band? An evolving Bleggae party band with excellent members including some top reggae drummers like Barry Prince and Tapper who back the best in reggae…

Your love of motor racing is obvious to anyone browsing your website, when did this start? When I was 11…

You met a hero of yours, Sir Stirling Moss, what was that like? Both A dream come true and like meeting an old friend…

And how did the Glen Moray come into it? SM invited me to open a bottle in his drinks cabinet – he doesn;t like whisky BTW – “The Jim Clark Festival Malt.” And it’s rude to Refuse a legend!! Check out The song on my website www.timhain.com. It tells that story. Then I decided to resurrect it for the 40th anniversary of Jim’s sad death at Hockenheim. Glenmorangie put me In touch with Glen Moray, I designed a label, and GM send out a bottle, from whichever cask is In their visitor centre at The time, and I keep a percentage Of every order I give ’em. Iain is a lovely bloke and has sent me same mega samples…

There is an image stuck in my head of old blues singers wrapped around a bottle of Jack Daniels, the music of yours seems so joined up with lyin back sippin an excellent malt, have you heard noises like this before, or is it just me? No, not just you. It’s a bit of a stereotype image. Ask Keef Richards! (there I go, stereotyping!) Well Blues and Malt is very different from that trad. image, Frankly I can’t STAND Jack Daniels. But getting up with Colin Dunn and blues harp maestro Alan Glen after a Dunn Masterclass is the business!

Do you have a favourite dram? and why? As they say “The one I’m drinking right now!” Which happens to be a Laphroaig Triple Wood, part of my “wages” for performing at The Whisky Show. Like the QC but softer. Most memorable include Lagavulin 21, a Talisker 25 Colin forced me to taste last week ( he’s such a bully!) a 23 YO Bowmore – one Of 288 bottles, a 50 YO Macallan 1946, the Glen Moray “Mountain Oak”. a SMWS Yamazaki…and a £30 Irish Knappogue Castle 12, the most subtle and delicate Of Irish malts gifted me buy a fan, Martin Clarke who runs a great Internet Blues Station, Radio Wey, every Friday. Check him out. www.thebluessession.co.uk  Last time I was on his show it turned into a whisky tasting…he’d appreciate a Link! DONE!

What are the plans for the future? New album with Alan Glen for starters, almost finished…more work singing at whisky events. I have a song, “Cry For Love” included on a new documentary about Bob Marley “The making of a legend” by Esther Anderson, a former girlfriend and photographer of Bob’s. The Rest JAH KNOW! Official trailer for “Making Of A Legend.” www.youtube.com/watch?v=U12IclF0WeU

Do you have any plans for a gig inside a whisky distillery? (Maybe we can chat on that?) Maybe we can! Let’s do it…

Finally; do you have any track in your set that mentions “angels”? or an angel? or whisky for that matter? I have a 5 track CD – “One More Dram ” – of whisky songs I made for the Whisky Show…it includes “Jim Clark Festival Malt” song mentioned earlier…

Well, many thanks Tim, keep the music acomin. (och Iv’e been to the southern States too often!) Paul was chatting over a dram & background blues with Tim Hain, www.timhain.com

TALISKER SPONSORS WORLD’S TOUGHEST ROWING RACE – Scotch Whisky News

talisker_challenge_race_logocream

TALISKER SPONSORS WORLD’S TOUGHEST ROWING RACE

by Pat Roberts

TALISKER™, the only Single Malt Scotch Whisky made in the Isle of Skye, is now the title sponsor of the of the Woodvale Atlantic Challenge, it was announced today.

The Atlantic Challenge, which starts next month, is the world’s toughest rowing race. It will be known as The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. The race is biennial; the Talisker sponsorship will run for at least the 2011 and the 2013 races.

TALISKER IS THE HEADLINE SPONSOR FOR THE ATLANTIC CHALLENGE

The 2011 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge starts on 4 December in the Spanish port of San Sebastian de la Gomera in the Canary Islands and follows the ‘Columbus Route’, west-bound across the mid-Atlantic to Port St Charles in Barbados. A London launch and photocall is planned for 9 November.

The Challenge is international: crews are entering from Canada, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Great Britain Norway, Sweden and the USA.

The race is 2,549 nautical miles (2,933 regular miles); but when bad weather and adverse conditions are factored in, most teams will row well over 3,000 miles during their Atlantic crossing. Competitors are expected to arrive in the Caribbean from mid-January onwards. Not all teams succeed in finishing the crossing.

“Passion, confidence, challenge and achievement”

salamanca
ATLANTIC CHALLENGE 2009

For Talisker, Ben Booth, Western Europe Brand Manager for Talisker, said:

“For many of its adorers, Talisker, made by the sea in the Isle of Skye, represents passion, confidence, challenge and achievement – uncompromising emotions that will characterise the daring participants in this fierce and demanding endeavour.

“The smell and taste of Talisker instantly connect you with the rugged environment where it is made– like a warm welcome from a wild sea. So we are proud to be involved and wish all the competitors the best of luck.”

Woodvale Challenge organiser Gemma Campbell said:

“We are thrilled to be able to announce Talisker Whisky as title sponsor for the race. The philosophy and the values that Talisker embody are a great symbol for the race and we are proud to have their involvement. All the company staff and race entrants are excited to be part of this big adventure with Talisker at the helm!”

NOTES

The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge
The Atlantic Challenge Rowing Race is run by the specialist company Woodvale Challenge Ltd, founded in 2004. The first Atlantic Rowing Race was held in 1997, and thereafter every two years from 2001. It attracted huge publicity in 2005 when Ben Fogle and James Cracknell famously competed, and established ocean rowing as one of the world’s toughest athletic challenges. See www.woodvale-challenge.com

Talisker
Talisker, in its widely distributed 10 year old expression, is a powerhouse Single Malt Scotch Whisky with a formidable peat and sea-salt nose; smoky sweetness with malt flavours; and developing warmth with a huge, peppery finish. It is the only single malt whisky made on the dramatic Isle of Skye, where the distillery has been making this award-winning single malt whisky since 1830. See www.malts.com

Shelter Point Distillery Releases Inaugural Cask Offer – Canadian Whisky News

shelter-point-distillery-logo

Shelter Point Distillery Releases Inaugural Cask Offer

Vancouver Island (November 2011) Shelter Point Distillery is making history this month as it releases its inaugural Cask Offer to the public on November 1, 2011.

Shelter Point Distillery is extremely pleased to be offering a limited number of casks from its annual production to whisky connoisseurs who want to be part of this West Coast Whisky adventure from the very beginning.

Three years in the making, Shelter Point Distillery began its maiden voyage to sow, grow and distill barley when distilling commenced in June 2011. Under the guidance of well known Master Distiller, Mike Nicolson, the spirit is distilled batch by batch in traditional copper pot stills and will utilize waters drawn from our own aquifer, which is glacier fed by nearby snowcapped mountains.

Whisky is matured in the highest quality oak casks, each individually numbered and marked with the owner’s name. Cask Owners will be involved in a close relationship with their barrel through annual cask samples, opportunities to visit the Distillery as well as input into deciding at which stage in the maturation they would like to bottle the single malt and at what strength. Shelter Point will take care of the bottling and owners will
have the option to create personalized labels for their unique product.

“So far, Shelter Point’s new make character is developing between the ‘green’ and ‘fruity’ categories. The American oak will complement this with further layers of vanilla/coconut leading to what we hope will be a light but subtly complex mature spirit.” Says Master Distiller Mike Nicolson regarding the flavor profile of the new make spirit.
