A Fond Farewell to Monique of The Dundee Dell – Scotch Whisky News

1dell

Happy 2011 from the Dundee Dell
5007 Underwood Ave
Omaha, Nebraska 68132

Hi there Dellrods!

We’re busy welcoming in 2011 around here, and plenty of changes are afoot.

After ten incredible years, the Dell and I have decided to part ways. I have had many amazing experiences here, made lifelong friends, had too many laughs to count, overcome challenges and found my passion in life. Whisky! Who knew? Well, I get pretty excited about fish and chips too. I am off into the wild blue beyond, but will make sure to keep you posted on what’s new. You’ll still see my face around, can’t get rid of me that easily!

I want to encourage every Dellrod to take the time to stop in sometime soon and see how times they are a’changing. Come visit us this week for a Scotch Tasting, the ever-capable and brilliant (Cortney/Rachel) will wow you with great whiskies and fresh takes on their production and palates. The theme is “For Peat’s Sake,” we’re tasting peaty whiskies from the Highlands and Speyside (traditionally non-peated areas) and non-peated whiskies from the Islands. Tastings are this Thursday at 7:00PM and Sunday the 9th at 4:00PM. Although our Holiday bottle sale has ended, we’ve got plenty of of stock and some new whiskies to taste and buy. Casey and Cortney are in tonight, and as always, Tuesdays are “Tapped Out Tuesdays,” this means $3 pints and drams of Single Malt for the price of a peg. It’s the Scotchiest night of the week!

My old email address monique@dundeedell.com is no longer valid, so here’s the new one: whiskymonique@hotmail.com I would love to hear from you. I am still always available for conversation, recommendations and insight.

With all the shifts in schedule, you’ll start to see some new faces, and probably see more of the ones you love. Please help us continue to challenge eachother and grow as a team. Hope to see each and every one of you soon at the Dundee Dell!

A fond farewell with love and hugs… Monique

Glenlivet 16yo Nadurra (57.6%, OB, Batch# 0808F, +/-2008) – Scotch Whisky Tasting Note

Glenlivet 16yo Nadurra (57.6%, OB, Batch# 0808F, +/-2008)

Glenlivet has listened to its customers and brought out a non-chillfiltered batch series ‘restricted release’ 16 year old Glenlivet that ‘faithfully captures the Original distillery character’. Some lessons learned from the runaway success of the Aberlour a’bunadh batch series? Good for them. The nose is at first fragrant and mildly perfumed with roses, heather, mild juniper and pineapple (think fresh warm pineapple and not the sickly sweet stuff from a tin). The stronger aromas are of sweet vanilla, banana bread, oak, alcohol and malt. After a few minutes the aromas open up to reveal Demerara sugar and vanilla. With water the alcohol diminishes and is much more reminiscent of the Glenlivet 12yo along with some rich fruit, cold tea, oak and rich malt. The taste neat is quite strong and of fruit and mild tobacco at first but then quite sweet. Also malt, vanilla and something that resembles gentle smoke. Perhaps a mirage? Excellent. With water it’s much sweeter with a good mixture of the malt and the fruit with back from the mild leather/tobacco duo. The finish is sweet malt with a hint of aspartame and gentle oak, the fruit and oak are the dominant flavours. Very well balanced. Some later delivery of cocoa and coffee which is brilliant. Mildly dry and spicy.

What a great dram, well done!

Whiskybroker.co.uk Cask Update – Scotch Whisky News

whiskybroker-header

Happy New Year!

It has been a busy end to 2010, with a delivery of casks arriving on the 21st of December, some requiring re-gauging, some re-casking and some re-painting before stowing them safely in the warehouse. The recent bad weather during most of December has caused significant delays in the removal and transportation of casks. Some warehouses, particularly Diageo’s Broxburn complex, are quite difficult to get casks from and I sigh every time I discover that casks I’m purchasing are held there. The cost of transportation is increasing which requires me to try to collect as many casks as possible in one load and linking and timing pick-ups between various warehouses can prove difficult.

They included 10 hogsheads of very tasty 2008 Benriach. Most of you are budget conscious and I was asked to re-cask some into refill bourbon barrels (first filled with Scotch whisky 10 years ago). This has meant the price could be reduced. These have been re-gauged and contain between 185-192 bulk litres at a strength of around 63.6%. Priced to sell at £900 – much less than you can buy casks of new make spirit for! For those of you who prefer more whisky there are still 5 hogsheads left.

Also delivered were the 2010 hogsheads of Glenfarclas (sadly all sold) and Royal Brackla (1 remaining) as well as two delicious 12 year old Blair Athol hogsheads, again both sold but two more have still to be delivered.

Only 2 of the 10yo Caol Ila barrels remain, with a couple reserved. I have sold 14 of these and it seems unlikely that any more will become available in the near future so if you want one of them don’t end up disappointed!

For those traders among my customers, I hope to be bottling a couple of casks of the Grain Whisky. At 20 year old it should be good value.

There is something for every taste in the list below with all casks priced lower than you will find them elsewhere (if you find one cheaper let me know!).

Glenlivet 12yo (40%, OB, +/- 2008) George & J. G. Smith Ltd. – Scotch Whisky Tasting Note

lda-image

Glenlivet 12yo (40%, OB, +/- 2008) George & J. G. Smith Ltd.

Glenlivet; what can you say about it but it’s everywhere and thus suffers from its own success somewhat; malt enthusiasts frequently look for something new. A mistake because the standard 12 year old is a cracker and great value for the money (and would be even better at 43%…).

The nose is delicate, much more subtle as one would expect from an Speyside single malt, with fruit (think banana, apricots, fruitcake and cherries) along with some really fragrant oak spiciness, cedar and gentle pine resin. The aromas are not dominated by the wood but beautifully compliment the fruit. Hidden way back in the recesses of the aromas is the ever so slight hint of smoke and after a few minutes in the glass the malt jumps to the fore. A very enjoyable collection of aromas. The taste is a mirror image of the nose; fruit, spicy oak, mild smoke and malt, all very well intermingled. The fruity sweetness is complimented by some toffee and honey, the malt is excellent. The finish is at first hints of leather and pine followed by the fruit, bitter cocoa and malt. It is quite long and the malt, the fruit and the spicy oak all jostle for position. The oak and the malt succeed in the end and after a few minutes the malt is triumphant…..not a dram to ignore.
